School of Fine Art Programme Talk

STOW

Staff across all undergraduate programmes in the School of Fine Art – Sculpture and Environmental Art, Painting and Printmaking, Fine Art Photography – will be available across floors of The Stow Building to talk to you about the programmes they teach and answer any questions you have about studying here. You will also get the chance to meet members of our Fine Art Critical Studies department who teach across all programmes.

Our Student Ambassador team along with members of staff from our technical support departments will be giving tours of The Stow Building. You will get a chance to see studio spaces along with the technical facilities available for students who study here.

Each tour will take about 45 minutes, and the meeting point for all tours will be the main first floor landing.

BOURDON

This talk will introduce you to the things you can expect whilst studying in first year at the Mackintosh School of Architecture (MSA). You will hear from staff about our approach to teaching future architects in the Anthropocene, and we will also discuss the importance of history, theory and technology, as well as making and drawing, in architectural education.

This talk will provide prospective applicants with details of how and when to apply to Mackintosh School of Architecture, along with advice on how to put together a strong portfolio and application to study here.

Take a tour of the MSA facilities within the Bourdon Building, including our studio spaces and specialist workshop facilities. The meeting point for studio tours is the ground floor of the Bourdon Building.

Join our Portfolio Preparation team to find out more about how to build a strong portfolio which represents you and your work for your application to art school. The team will also talk to you about how to submit your portfolio, and answer any questions you have about making a strong portfolio submission for your programme of study.

CAT Studio

The Marketplace is the central hub to meet other prospective students along with staff from Admissions, International Exchange, GSA Careers, Student Support Services, Student Societies, Sustainability, Portfolio Preparation, Widening Participation and more.

At the hub you will be able to chat to staff from departments across the School; ask the questions you have about living in Glasgow, studying here and making your application; and get an understanding of the wide range of support and facilities available to students at The Glasgow School of Art.

Join the Centre for Advanced Textiles (CAT) team for a technical demonstration and sample sale. Digital textile printing technology allows designs and images to be printed straight from the computer screen onto fabric. CAT are a specialist team based at The GSA specialising in digital textile print. Their clients include students, commercial businesses, and the public, and they produce fabrics for fashion, interior furnishing through to wall hangings and artworks.

Drop in to their studio throughout the day to meet the staff and see the printing process in action. Fabric samples will also be on sale.

Join the GSA Archives and Collections team in the Reid Building to find out about the special collections we hold and how students use these collections in their study at the GSA.

Drop in to the Fashion Design studios on the third floor of The Reid Building throughout the day. Here you will be shown around the studios as well as our specialist workshop facilities. You will have the chance to ask staff and students any questions you have about the course.

Drop into Interaction Design's large-scale projected interactive installation where you can playfully interact with information about the programme and talk to our staff team.

Join us for an exhibition of student projects in the Interior Design studio. The exhibition features work from across all years of the course to give you an insight into the range of projects undertaken on the Programme.

Drop in to the Silversmithing and Jewellery Studio where we will have a presentation of work generated by students in the GSA Silversmithing and Jewellery department.

The Glasgow School of Art Exhibitions Department curates an innovative year-round public programme that links into GSA staff research, teaching and learning, student experience, creative network, our communities, contemporary practice and heritage.

Join us for our current exhibition,  Undercurrents: Art and Ocean in Africa and the Pacific  which brings together the creative outputs of eight community-based art projects that surface human relationships and emotional connections with the ocean. Indigenous knowledge, practices and worldviews are showcased in diverse media, ranging from film and song to tapestry and wearable art, created by makers based in Ghana, South Africa, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea.

Join Programme Leader, Anna Gordon, for a talk about studying Silversmithing and Jewellery at The Glasgow School of Art. You will hear more about the course and studying here and have the chance to ask any questions you have.

Join our Year 3 students for a student crit session. They will be undertaking a Battenburg Review for their current project Manifesto. Pop by and see a live crit session and get a feel for studying at the GSA. Students will be available in the afternoon to share more about their work.

Take a tour of the Silversmithing and Jewellery studio with programme staff and technicians. See the studio spaces and the specialist workshop facilities that students on the programme use.

The meeting point for the tours is the Silversmithing and Jewellery studios on the 4th floor of the Reid Building.

Join us to find out more about studying Interaction Design at the Glasgow School of Art. Interaction Design combines technology with visual thinking and creative problem solving, bridging the creative and technological worlds.

Students who study the programme learn to work with creative code to generate engaging interactive digital media for a wide range of platforms.

Join a staff and student-led demonstration using Oculus Headsets to experience the digital interior featuring models of current student projects.

Join Textile Design staff for an introductory workshop on observing, analysis and exploring colour for textiles. You will be introduced to some key concepts about the use of colour in textiles and have the chance to meet and chat to the staff who teach on our course as well as other prospective students.

Booking for the workshop is recommended as spaces will be limited.

Take a tour of the Communication Design studio spaces and specialist workshop facilities that students on the programme have access to.

The meeting point for studio tours is on Level 1 of the Reid Building at the food of the staircase to Level 2.

Join GSA Alumni and Artist in Residence, Caius Bearder, who will give a technical engraving demonstration on the Silversmithing and Jewellery mezzanine 12.30-13.00

Take a tour of the Product Design Engineering (PDE) studio space and specialist workshop facilities in the Reid Building that students on our PDE programme use.

Join Programme Leader, Julia MacLean-Evans, for a talk about studying Fashion at the Glasgow School of Art. You will hear more about the course and studying here and have the chance to ask any questions you have.

Not all students start their undergraduate studies in first year, and the GSA has different options for some students to enter study in second or third year.

In this talk our Progression Manager, Elizabeth Beidler, will explore the qualifications, knowledge and skills required to join the GSA in second or third year with particular focus on applying from further education college.

THE HUB

& Visualisation at The Hub Tours and Demonstration

School of Simulation and Visualisation, The Hub Taxis depart from Reid Building to The Hub at 12:15

Following the talk at the Centre for Contemporary Art, you are invited to take a trip to The Hub at Glasgow’s quayside for a tour of the SimVis studios and facilities.

Alongside the studio tour, we will have technical demonstrations across our different programmes including Games and Virtual Reality, 3D Modelling and Sound for the Moving image.

The Hub is based in Glasgow Digital Media Quarter at Pacific Quay. Free taxis will be available to transport visitors to and from the Garnethill campus and The Hub at 12.15pm outside the entrance to The Reid Building on Scott Street.

CENTRE FOR CONTEMPORARY ART (CCA)

Join us in the Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA) Theatre on Sauchiehall Street to hear more about our two undergraduate programmes based in the Innovation School – Product Design and Design for Health and Wellbeing. You will meet Programme Leader, Irene Bell, who will provide an insight into the programmes and the unique and holistic role that design has in our society now and in the future.

After the talk you will have a chance to visit the department.

Join us at the Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA) to find out more about undergraduate study within the School of Simulation and Visualisation.

The School of Simulation and Visualisation (SimVis) is a technically oriented school within The Glasgow School of Art and offers students a creative outlook on the potential and concrete practice of art and design in the areas of Games, Virtual Reality, Sound Design and 3D Modelling.

On SimVis courses, students learn to develop and practice their technical skills in their chosen discipline within the creative environment of an Art School. SimVis courses offer students the opportunity to critically explore their discipline in relation to current debates and issues at the GSA and the wider world.

Come along to hear from Head of Undergraduate Programmes at SimVis, Dr Sandy Louchart, who will talk about the programmes we offer and answer any questions you have about studying here.

Staff from SimVis will be available in the Reid Marketplace throughout the day.

The Glasgow School of Art has over 75 international exchange partners worldwide, meaning we can offer a wide range of opportunities to our students for international travel and study during their degree.

HALDANE BUILDING

Haldane Building

Drop into the Haldane Building to meet staff and students from the Innovation School throughout the day. You will get the chance to see students’ project work including film work and publications and meet our student reps who can chat to you about what it is like to study in the Innovation School and in Glasgow.

Staff from the Innovation School will also be available throughout the day in the Reid Marketplace.

Tours start at Margaret Macdonald House, 89 Buccleuch Street Information Hall at Blythswood House, 200 West Regent Street

At The Glasgow School of Art, we have two Halls of Residence which incoming students can apply to – Margaret Macdonald House and Blythswood House. Join us for a tour of our accommodation. The tours will start at the entrance to Margaret Macdonald House in Garnethill and together you will walk through Garnethill to Blythswood House, finishing with a visit to a student flat and a question-and-answer session with our Accommodation Team.

House 200 West Regent Street

The Team at Blythswood House will be running a pop-up café for Open House. There will also be an Information stand based in Blythswood House throughout the day with members of our ResLife team who can answer your questions and chat to you more about life in Halls. Drop by for a cup of tea and a chat.
