Introduction A warm welcome to the 2022 School of Design degree show. This is my first year as the Head of Design and I am delighted to have joined the Glasgow School of Art and to be leading a world class school of talented students and inspiring staff. This year we are delighted to fully return to a public exhibition in the Reid Building for all our graduating students work after a two-year hiatus. We hope you will have the opportunity to experience the work in person and in-situ as you move between rich sensory experiences across our stunning building. Our school is one of design and making, equally committed to what is an affirmative creative process of production and consideration of all media, objects and artefacts across a range of locations and/or scales. The process of designing, discussing, and making work in our studios engages our senses and is a rich tactile material experience for all our disciplines.
Professor Stephen Bottomley Head of the School of Design
The work is a celebration of each student’s individual achievement, the show a reflection of our creative community. Sharing these very human and social dimensions of our practices is a great pleasure, especially after a time of social distancing when many of these types of natural engagement were not possible or simply not permissible. This year, for the first time, the School of Design is creating matching printed handouts for all our departments, that collectively document a snapshot of the class of ’22. Our parallel on-line digital showcase, each has a page individually curated by our students, that contains further opportunities for exploration into the work of each of our graduate’s portfolios. I wish all our graduates every success and congratulate them on the culmination of their studies over what have been such recent challenging times for all.
MDes Communication Design I am delighted to invite you to view the work of the students of the Masters in Communication Design programme at the Glasgow School of Art and once more to be able to celebrate their achievements in a physical Degree Show in the School of Designs’ Reid Building. The students have produced some truly fantastic work across various disciplines, including Graphic Design, Illustration, Photography, and interdisciplinary spaces. They explore how we communicate our ideas and thoughts in an ethically aware and sustainable manner in society. Projects range from exploring cultural heritage through food to constructed photographic works challenging our preconceptions and complex relationship with food through irreverent imagery. Identity is a theme running through the exhibition, including cultural, gender, and third culture identities, explored through various media and approaches. A celebration of the mundane and a deep connection to everyday life expressed through acute observation is evident in several projects. The works take us on journeys from imagined worlds to South America and beyond, exploring Chinese folklore, contemporary feminism in China, and the personal memories of childhood. Chenxin Li In this project, I imagine a future in which the development of humanity continues to speed up. To ensure everyone spends as much time as possible in the Metaverse, various corporate psychological service companies emerge. In reaction to this threat on personal freedoms and the demand on a person’s time, I created the Anxiety Control Corporation. The ACC can eliminate negative emotions in the brain through advanced means, in order to allow users to stay in the Metaverse for prolonged time periods and reduce the risk of associated emotional problems—thus ensuring the continuous development of the entire metaverse ecology. ↘ lichenxin9888@qq.com ↘ @xiaguanhai
Chuqiao Liu Through my photographic practice, my master’s degree project, ‘Miss’ explores themes and issues associated with historic and contemporary feminism in China. Asking my models to wear the ubiquitous Chinese garment, the Cheongsam as a symbol of emancipation, whilst simultaneously being contained in a restrictive wooden box-like structure, symbolic of the patriarchy, my photographs aim to initiate a dialogue on the current state and tortuously slow development of women’s rights and gender equality in China today. ↘ chuqiaoliu.com ↘ cho_liu02@163.com ↘ @chuqiao_liuuu

Esther Omez Originally from France and educated in a multicultural environment, I am a passionate, open minded and ethically aware multidisciplinary designer. I work primarily with publishing and digital media to create socially engaged narratives. My work this year has been focussed on developing a critical view of social and cultural issues, by exploring the relationship between food and cultural heritage. Much of my time has been spent at community workshop conducted by social enterprises uncovering and highlighting the power of food that grants us attention, compassion and love through the act of caring and sharing. ↘ eraomez.myportfolio.com/work ↘ eraomez@gmail.com ↘ @esthrdesign
Giulia Saporito I am a Sicilian graphic designer with a strong interest in printed matter and typography. I find the act of observing is always fun and this is what draws me to graphic design: its deep connection with our everyday life. This year I founded Brioche, a small design studio and publishing house. The primary focus of Brioche is to create books and editions in close collaboration with artists, photographers, and other cultural protagonists with Sicily at their core as one of its recurring themes. ↘ giuliasaporito.com ↘ hello@giuliasaporito.com ↘ @giulia.saporito

Isabella Dalliston I characterise my practice through my role as a hybrid practitioner. In Good Faith explores my unusual childhood, growing up with parents who are both priests in the Church of England. Through a series of original interviews, the book is a personally curated investigation into the concepts of faith, family, and doubt that frame my childhood memories and inform my present-day. In Good Faith is a hand-bound book inspired by the visual language of Bibles and the New English Hymnal. A personal reflection on my nuanced relationship with faith that sits within my cross-disciplinary practice. ↘ behance.net/dallistondesigns ↘ Isabella.dalliston@gmail.com ↘ @dalliston_designs
Jessica Harle I am a Scottish multi-disciplinary creative, working primarily with the mediums of photography, moving image and editorial design. My current practice, influenced by my previous UG studies in Fashion Management and Fashion & Textile Design from the Robert Gordon University, explores topics concerned with identity, fashion and sustainability. My final master’s work, ‘The New North - Sustainable Fashion and Scottish Identity’ is a collaborative docu-fashion photography project with five Scottish contemporary fashion designers, which I have made into a photobook. ↘ jessicajaneharle.myportfolio.com ↘ jessicajaneharle@gmail.com ↘ @jessicajanephotographs

Jingchun Hu The inspiration for my work comes from contemporary life and culture. I discovered emotional responses and new perspectives in response to environments through observational drawing. My work explores these perspectives and themes through a range of traditional media. My children’s picture book ‘Eno’ follows a journey of discovery for the main character, a dog called ‘Eno’, finding his place and value in the world. ↘ katiefu.cargo.site ↘ jingchunhu718@gmail.com ↘ @K9T1E
Jingyi Zeng I’m a visual artist from China, currently working with image, film, and installation, passionate about exploring emotional experience. Throughout my study at GSA, I have been experimenting with the mediums of sound and text to explore the visualisation of senses and develop narratives. I’m attempting to create a dialogue with the outside world through a creative practice of responding to various widespread phenomenon which draw on my personal situation. I’m interested in a range of subjects including time and memory, emotion and intimacy, trauma and recovery and sense and nature. ↘ zengjingyi.me ↘ iriszzjy96@gmail.com ↘ @iris_zengjingyi

Marie Foulquié My stories originate in my imagination and are realised online and in print through comics. Illustration provides the vehicle to communicate entire worlds. A range of characters, witches, cowboys, musicians and time-travellers fill my sketchbooks, all with something to say. In my practice, I have stopped hiding behind these invented characters and started documenting my transformation in gender and spirituality through a series of self-portraits in my project ‘Aquarius’. Whatever tale I tell, colour is the thread that unites all my worlds. Broad brushstrokes and pencil marks trace the journey. ↘ marie.foulquie@hotmail.fr ↘ @ffoulkes_
Kokea Kwok Through my work as a photographer and graphic designer, my master’s degree projects explore our complex relationship with food in a three-part publication. Often employing an irreverent visual language, my constructed photographic images, aim to challenge conventions and assumptions associated with food production and consumption to inform my audience of the wider societal issues and environmental impact our food choices have on humanity and the health of our planet. ↘ kokea.cargo.site ↘ kokeass@yeah.net ↘ @kokeass

Peter Clark As a Glasgow-based photographer, my work often depicts the connection I have with my urban surroundings and the communities that live in it. I have always had a keen interest in street and observational environment photography. Over time this has developed with my interest in portraiture and currently both of my projects combine the two. ‘Los Otros’ inspired by my Bolivian/multicultural identity, aims to highlight the visibility of an under-represented Latin American community within Glasgow and wider Scotland. Through ‘Insomnus’ I explore the ethereal nature of the city and its inhabitants at night. ↘ peterclarkphotography.co.uk ↘ Peterkclark96@gmail.com ↘ @pekyclark
Pranay Dilawari I am a designer and illustrator from India, with an academic background in Architecture. I have previously worked as an art director at several advertising and branding agencies. My work over the last five years has involved a multidisciplinary approach and is spurred on by the notion that designers must solve problems for others through responsible design practices. I hold a keen interest in type design (especially of the Indic variety) and have spent my time at Glasgow School of Art carefully studying and experimenting with the medium, in an attempt to make the type design process accessible to a wider audience. ↘ issuu.com/pranaydilawari/docs/portfolio_2021_pranay_dilawari ↘ pranaydilawari@gmail.com ↘ Instagram @pranay_dilawari

Qinxin Pan Having studied shoe design for my undergraduate study back home in China, I wanted to shift my practice more towards image-making and use the opportunity presented through my master’s degree to focus on fashion photography. Based on my interests in science-fiction and space, my project ‘Interstellar’ is a fictional series of fashion-based images about two cosmic travellers visiting different planets in our solar system in search of a new future. My work involves making sets within the lighting studio and an important part of my process is collaborating with my models and make-up artist to transform my visions into images. ↘ 1950377907@qq.com ↘ @fatpan_p
Ruijia Zou During our lives, we are inevitably asking “what is love”. In the process we may gain a lot of fond memories or experience a lot of sadness, but we are love itself. This project is a story of love exploration, based on my own experience and that of my friends, which I hope will help people who are hurting on the road to love to find their way, or for those who are still stuck on the question of “what is love”. ↘ tofuzou.cargo.site ↘ r.zou.tofu@gmail.com ↘ @tofunakka

Runxuan Bai I am a graphic designer working primarily with digital media, publication, and brand identity. Over the past two years I have explored how I can use my skills as a graphic designer to highlight various social issues. The phrase “the curse of lovely” was first coined by psychologist, Jacqui Marson to describe a growing trend – where many people’s lives and relationships are blighted by the *misplaced* belief that they must always be liked by those around them. The Curse of the Lovely imagines a charitable organisation, BUILD, dedicated to raising awareness about this issue; and to helping young adults and children build confidence and so avoid becoming people-pleasers. ↘ bairunxuan2022@outlook.com ↘ Instagram: @runxuan70
Ruorong Ni I’m a Chinese visual artist/photographer working primarily with digital platforms to create still photography, moving image and animation. My work is inspired by traditional Chinese folk stories which are combined with my reflections on my own experiences, mental health and emotions to make constructed portraits of imagined characters. Working collaboratively with makeup artists and fashion designers my work aims to provide the audience with a glimpse into a near dystopian future. ↘ niruorong.com ↘ nnnnm7m@gmail.com ↘ @ginryesh

Seher Roychowdhury I am a photographer from Philadelphia and my master’s degree project, COMEBACK consists of a series of documentary analogue photographs, which were made in between and after various pandemic lockdowns. The images aim to tell stories from various live music events or ‘gigs,’ in order to showcase the importance and joy live dance music can bring to people and in so doing highlight themes of euphoria, intimacy and togetherness fostered within the realm of club culture in the UK. ↘ seher-roy.com ↘ seher1017@gmail.com ↘ @s.roy__
Sheng Cheng Over the last two years I have sought to develop a practice that centres around the experimental use of typography and image-making. Inspired by the intricate typographic work of artist and designer Sam Winston, my current project MOON seeks to explore the physical impact of stress behaviours on the body. By layering photographic, typographic and textural elements, I hope to engage the viewers tactile – as well as visual – senses, and so encourage a deeper connection with the work. ↘ cs19970928@sina.com ↘ Instagram: @s_cheng123

Simone Zhang Memories and the mundane inspire my work. Observational drawing is key to my practice, celebrating and documenting the subtle details of everyday life. My children’s book ‘Alina and the Gorgeous Daisy’ reflects these daily observations. My work explores a range of materials, including paint and collage. My love of drawing details of objects involves varying their scale to develop unique graphic works on paper, exploring how to make the familiar unfamiliar. I hope you share my sense of discovery when viewing my work. ↘ simonezhang.cargo.site ↘ simonezhax@outlook.com ↘ @simone_z_illo
Su Ying Wu My proposed Third Culture Museum imagines an institution dedicated to sharing the knowledge and unique collective experience of Third Culture Kids (TCKs). The term Third Culture Kids, coined by US sociologist Ruth Hill, describes individuals who’s developmental years were spent outside the parents culture. As a TCK myself I want to promote an awareness of this group—often considered as constantly in transition—and celebrate our cross-cultural experience. Taking inspiration from linguistic brackets, I developed a playful identity system and promotional materials for the museum inviting viewers to consider their own connections or disconnections. ↘ ssuyingww.cargo.site ↘ suying180299@gmail.com ↘

Wenhao Lan Using material experimentation and lettering as a basis has led me to typographic outcomes which are unconventional and balance a conforming of legibility. I have used publishing and book design to attempt to present project work which seeks to break the rules, deviate from the expected execution, and oppose the norm. The work is divided into three sections: an investigation of the traces of past growth, documentation of the process of ongoing growth, and an exploration of future growth. ↘ georginalwh@gmail.com ↘ @georgina.lannn
Xiao Liu I am a graphic designer who for the past year has focused on editorial design. ONLY FOR HER is a magazine presenting my investigation into the unfair treatment faced by female athletes and their over-sexualization in the media. The magazine is a celebration of present-day successes and the historic achievement of female athletes. Taking a critical position on the media’s presentation of female athletic icons and commodification of female success. I have contextualized these ideas through a personal curation of academic papers, contemporary interviews, and news stories—connecting them to the wider issue of contemporary gender politics and gender equality. ↘ xiao_liu0705@163.com ↘ @liuxiao_design

Xinyu Huang I am a Chinese artist specializing in photography and I am currently based in Glasgow. Beginning with a strong sense of the complexity and fragility of the world where I live, my practice explores self-awareness in a dramatically changing world in combination with the irresistible passage of time, and the evolution of humanity. Through an experimental and research-based approach, I exploring the vulnerability of physical existence and my current work focuses on my perception of the inner-self integrated in the external world and involves the exploration of personal memory, mental health, emotions, and the deconstruction of space and time. ↘ xinyuh98@gmail.com ↘ @xinyu.hh
Xuejie Zhou As a graphic designer, I deeply enjoy learning new skills and techniques and I am passionate when exploring various modes of presenting visual outputs. I find inspiration from life around me, expanding my perception and understanding of realistic images with/alongside abstract shapes— translating observations into practice. In Time, Memory and Outlines I use graphic metaphors to communicate themes and reflections on life that could easily go unnoticed. The remnants of bill posters and stickers are traces back to the past. The effects of time on a cut flower, losing its petals one-by-one, connects to fleeting nature of memory. ↘ xuejiedesign.cargo.site ↘ xuejie.zhou@outlook.com ↘ @vickyzzzhou

Xueqi Kong In recent years the rise of mental health issues associated to social media use has been well documented, and a number of studies suggest that increased use of such platforms can lead to lower self-esteem, and higher levels of anxiety and depression. My current project, Shame-sta-gram, seeks to critically reflect – through expressive typography and editorial image-making – the role of social media platforms in promoting an unachievable beauty standard. ↘ 497792532@qq.com ↘ Instagram: @rxueqiu
Yiwen Hao I am a graphic designer whose practice is predominantly informed by my interest in the relationships between human behaviour and visual communication. Exploring how various modes of graphic communication—and our interactions with them—can affect both individual and communal decision-making. My project originated as a personal investigation into the label/identifier, Corporate Slave. Inspired by my own experiences and informed by stories I have collected from workers in various business contexts, this project aims to bring renewed attention to the issues effecting the day-to-day life of corporate slaves. Yue Hu I am a graphic designer who embraces the physical and hands-on processes of making. My practice takes in everything related to printed matter: editorial design, typography and printmaking. I use my practice to reflect upon and process the world as I experience it— digging into ideas behind the mundane, the commonplace and presenting them anew. In my project—inspired by the surface abrasions that have indelibly marked my belongings over time and use—I examine my interpretation of being in a culture as defined in Debord’s, The Society of The Spectacle, as moving from being to having and having to appearing. ↘ huyue.cargo.site ↘ Yue.Hu5@outlook.com ↘ @moon_space_no5
Yufei Qin I am a graphic designer specialising in editorial and packaging design. My work this year has been focused on educational and cultural issues—explored through playful, interactive forms and a broad multidisciplinary approach. This work illustrates how, in my opinion, young people in China are restricted by the utilitarian education system. The work is presented in the form of a Correction Book, critically investigates the current focus and deficiencies in the Chinese education system—using the transformation metaphor of a butterfly the book encourages young people to recognise their restrictions, develop independent thought and break free. ↘ fayeqin.myportfolio.com ↘ qinyufeiqyf926@163.com ↘ @fayeqyb_design

Zedong Liu I am a graphic designer, committed to using my practice to helping those less fortunate than myself. My current project (in)visible aims to explore the relationship between the homeless, homeless charities and the general public. Zhengping Shao My practice focuses on narratives explored through mundane experiences at an emotional level. My comic, “When I Start to Draw”, focuses on the blank page and the associated anxiety that every artist experiences when facing the challenge and potential it presents. My narrative employs the surreal fantasies of my imagination, colliding with reality with self-effacing humour. My story rides the wave of self-doubt as a shared experience of rising to face the challenge as an essential stage in realizing the potential in any creative practice. ↘ shawno0.cargo.site ↘ shawno_0@outlook.com ↘ @shawno.0
