AIMS Develop a schematic design on a large scale site. Gain experience of hospitality design with industry focus. Develop proposals through a dialogue with hospitality industry experts, acknowledging existing conventions and expanding on the typology of Hotel
Project:
HOTEL
Create a proposal for a new urban hotel via a clearly articulated concept. Position your hotel within the market, from high end luxury hotel to budget hostel and align your design decisions with this position. As an exercise, suggest a price per room per night, based on research of similar accommodation types in Glasgow. There may be a particular commercial or ethical emphasis that you wish to highlight. We ask you to explore and expand on this typology. How might you approach the key ‘moments’ in the residents journey eg checking in and checking out, sleeping, bathrooms, leisure experiences, social experiences, places to work, food and beverage, lounging etc Use a hierarchy of information, so for example if your design ethos is weighted toward the unique approach of the checking in experience, give this more detail and attention than the other areas. The ID Studio will be receiving valuable input on this project from CitizenM. The brief is not to design for the CitizenM brand, rather it urges you to consider the thinking behind the hotel–as a case study– and what you might learn from this example. There will be an opportunity to present your ideas to CitizenM and receive feedback from their representatives directly.

LOCALITY There is a wide range of hotels in Glasgow city centre, these range from budget friendly 2 star hotels to the more luxurious 5 star hotel offerings. The closest of these hotels is the 3.5 stars Raddison Red at Finnieston Quay, 25 Tunnel Street, Glasgow, G3 8HL. The second closest is an upmarket B&B - the 4.5 star 15 Glasgow at 15 Woodside Place, Glasgow, G3 7QS.

PA L A I S D E J U S T I C E
During my initial reseach I looked into Mannerism. This led me to the Parco Dei Mostri, the Appennino statue & the Palais De Justice. These places all brought one thing to my mind - the 1999 remake of the movie The Haunting. An interior with an unnerving atmosphre even before anything actually happens, I began to wonder how to create this creepy & haunting space. To find out how to set this scene I looked to the fantasy horror video game Resident Evil, with its unsettling environment - the use of lighting played a big deal here as did weathered looking materials. I then looked for unnearving real life spaces and found this image of a corridor, it had everything I wanted to explore.

HOTEL
I had great visions of a haunted style hotel, completely unsettling and so sound proofed you could hear a pin drop. Flickering lights, only single rooms and illusions created by mirrors to give the space an unescapable feeling. I was totally sold on this idea but realised before actually taking this to the concetp stage that it may be to unsettling to sleep in, would it have needed to become a Disney-like theme hotel to allow people to feel comfortable? Looking back now the project is over I would have liked to have explored this idea much more & this would most likely be my number one choice to take forward to the end of the project if I had it to do over.

After rejecting my first idea I then moved on to looking at capsule hotels. Most of the capsule hotels I came across seemed to me to have a sort of space age, futuristic asthetic & I wondered if this could be a way to incorporate a completely seperate from outside atmosphere. At this stage I started to look at fururistic shapes & unusual interiors, I stumbled into some vases by Zaha Hadid which really set me off looking for organic like forms in strange ways.

HOTEL
I really loved the way the Zhongshuge bookstore had these space age forms mixed in with other materials, the curved shapes really gave the space a unique feel. I also looked to what other spaces can be incorporated into a hotel, this led me to a gym designed by Karim Rashid. This, as is most of his work, unusally shaped and quite suited to the scifi theme I seemed to be heading towards. Lastly I started researching how the sites old use - a bank, could be incorporated into the lobby.
