The exact nature of the colours we see is the result of a complicated i nteraction between t he physics o f light, the physiology of the human eye, environmental c onditions a t the time o f viewing, t he physical properties of the object being viewed and the way in which our brains receive and interpret all this information. In other words, for each viewing, there is a huge number of possible combinations i nvolving phenomena such a s illumination, reflectivity, s urface texture and many more…With admirable boldness, t he human b rain a dopts a ‘no nonsense ’ approach to the flood of information it receives from the eye, and it simplifies and classifies, so humans can cope with the complexity of their world.” “What Is Colour?” The Semantics of Colour: A Historical Approach, by C. P. Biggam, Cambridge University Press, 2012, pp. 1–8.

“To say t hat colour p lays multiple r oles i n human society is a gross understatement. It is everywhere in our lives, sometimes boringly dull and at other times brilliantly eye-catching. It is often taken for granted, yet it also conveys vital messages, as in traffic lights or electrical wiring. It can even signify and engender loyalties and hatreds that i nfluence human h istory , as in heraldry, uniforms and flags. Since it pervades every aspect of human life, it might be considered essential f or our languages to express c olour c oncepts clearly, accurately and in a way that is easily communicable.

The study of material culture has a long history as a discipline, especially i n the fields of a nthropology and art history. In fashion studies, some scholars do not a ppreciate t he v alue of e xamining actual garments, dismissing such work as no more than a cataloguing e xercise. I n 1998, c urator Valeria S teele wrote: ‘Because intellectuals live by the word, many scholars tend to i gnore the important role t hat objects can play in the creation of knowledge’.” The D ress D etective: a p ractical guide t o object-based research i n fashion, b y Ingrid M ida. Makers a s well a s users mingle with t he artefacts they produce. Hand-makers, such as crafts-persons, seamstresses o r shoemakers, w ho h ave repetitive tactile engagement w ith the object’s m ateriality through i ts p roduction, i ncorporate some aspect o f that artefact i nto themselves. S imultaneously, t he maker is i ncorporated i nto the garment, t he t wo becoming entangled or enmeshed. Before t he g arment exists a s a material f orm, i t exists as an idea, image or intention. It is a fantasy or desire held in the mind of the maker. It is through the projection of t his intention onto material, a nd through negotiation with agency of materials themselves, t hat the realization o f the garment takes place.’- Ellen Sampson, The Cleaved Garment, the maker, t he w earer a nd t he ‘ me not m e’ o f fashion practice.
