About us The Glass Racking Company is a design and metal fabrication company with Australian head office in Melbourne Vic, a supply and service branch in Brisbane Qld, and service branches in Sydney NSW and both Perth and Bunbary WA. The company’s main product line focuses on the fabrication of flat glass handling and transportation equipment for the glass, glazing and window fabrication industries. The products include glass carrying trucks, vans and utes, glass handling trolleys, glass lifting equipment, and glass storage systems. These products are unique and highly proprietary and with the systems and processes designed and promoted by The Glass Racking Company create an end to end glass handling solution. The Glass Racking Company owns over 17 aluminium dies, 8 polymer dies, and 11 plastic injection moulding dies. These assist with creating unique components, intellectual property, and product differentiation for The Glass Racking Company solutions. “Innovation by design” has led The Glass Racking Company’s development since 1991, with the strong engineering and design base being fundamental to the philosophy and direction of the business. Manufacturing systems using 3D CAD design and CNC machining have aided production quality and reduced production costs. The Glass Racking Company has branches in Christchurch, Auckland, Seattle, Los Angeles, Kansas, Vancouver, Bunbury (south of Perth), Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and St Helens in the UK. Feedback from the “global” industry now feeds product development. Formerly known as “Metalcraft Engineering” in Australia and New Zealand,“The Glass Racking Company” is the global name.
Bryn Thompson Bryn Thompson founded Metalcraft Engineering with his wife Samantha in 1991. Bryn’s background as a trained fitter/welder combined with Samantha’s organisational and financial skills allowed the business to establish. As CEO Bryn continues to lead the company and is actively involved in sales, marketing and product development. Customers appreciate Bryn spending time with them on their sites developing solutions specific for their business, and helping with installations as and where required. Bryn is in his late-forties, and with Samantha has two daughters Cass and Emily.

Kosta’s natural desire for customer sevice and helping out clients who are experiencing problems that he knows The Glass Racking Company can solve is what drives Kosta’s motivation and commitment to the role. Mark is the Queensland sales and service branch manager, based in Brisbane, and has a strong work history in the glass industry. This includes over 30 years experience with large glass companies such as Pilkington predominantly in sales and marketing roles. Warwick is Director of Design and Product Development. Innovative designs combined with Warwicks 3D Computer Aided Drawing (CAD) division drives the development of new products and tailor-made solutions. The Glass Racking Company internal van racks are available for most makes and models of vans, with an extensive range of options available to allow the rack solution to be tailored to the individual needs of the customer.
1.2M x 1.5M internal rack with standard 200mm foot
The Glass Racking Company simple leaner racks provide a polymer bearing surface for the glass load to be secured against to reduce damage. The glass sits on the floor of the van (usually on a plywood base), and is secured using traditional ropes and strops. This solution for glass transportation has the lowest capital cost but requires the most labour. The Glass Racking Company internal rack is a complete external rack mounted inside a van. The glass sits on raised base blocks with polymer bearing surfaces on both the base blocks and also on the rack structure. The glass load is secured using strap poles and blue polymer sliding blocks. This is a very safe and secure means for glass transportation, with the added benefit of being quick to load and unload. The timber based internal rack with inlayed slotted base allows for wide loads and often suits the needs of window fabricators and installers. The space between the vans side walls and the internal racks can be used for shelving storage. This design often suits Euro styled vans which can require floor to ceiling bracing to support the roofbars and external rack loading.

Pullout racks on sliders are becoming more popular. The Glass Racking Company supplies pullout racks as both an A-frame design (with two useable racks) and as an L-frame design (with a single rack). Depending on weight and size the racks typically extend from 2/3 to 3/4 of the length of the rack out the back of the vehicle for ease of loading and unloading. Being T6 aluminium, the racks are lightweight and allow for maximum glass load. Installation involves securing the leaner or rack to the floor and roof of the van . Sliding pullout L-frame rack

Optional 500mm height extension and scissor clamps add to the versality of the rack for accommodating non-standard glass loads. Some modern Euro styled van designs don’t have traditional gutters for mounting the roofbars, but have fixing points on the flat of the roof, often in channels. These points can have low weight loadings. We provide bracing solutions combining internal and external racks which work well with this style of van including VW Transporter, Ford Transit Custom, LDV, Hyundai iload, and others.

The Glass Racking Company lightweight open truck range has been developed for glass companies who require the convenience of open body trucks, with capacity for significant glass load, usually more than a van or ute. Many lightweight trucks are purchased with an existing body, either a flat deck or a flat deck with sides. Provided the body is strong enough (some imported bodies are only timber framed underneath and not ideal for the weights of glass and window transportation) racks can be fitted to the existing body for a very cost effective glass delivery vehicle. Options are for internal racks, external racks, and roofbars. The external racks are similar to a van or ute rack.
4.5M Delivery
The Glass Racking Company has manufactured many 3.5M and 4.5M open delivery vehicles. The 3.5M Delivery is a 3.5M open body with large full length and full width internal and external glass racks. The 4.5M Delivery is a larger version of the same design, providing for greater volume of glass. Both have glass rack height adjustment which allows good site access plus the ability to extend the racks for the occassional oversize job. Both the 3.5M Delivery and the 4.5M delivery can be fitted with The Glass Racking Company Window Transportation System, a series of components that work together to quickly and safely secure window frames in transit. This solution is very quick to load and unload and dramatically reduces rework resulting from transit damage.

The Glass Racking Company manufactures specialist site glazing trucks and trailers as either open vehicles or closed with curtainsides.
4.5M Contractor site truck
The 3.5M Glazier is a 3.5M open body with a lockable workshop with large internal and external glass racks. The 4.5M Contractor is a larger version of the same design, providing greater volume of glass and greater storage capacity. Both have glass rack height adjustment which allows good site access plus the ability to extend the racks for the occassional oversize job. The 3.5M Glazier has similar overall dimensions to an extra long wheelbase van with double racks but offers significant advantages. Being a truck it has a truck chassis, suspension, engine, transmission, and other parts that are designed for carrying the significant load required of a glass transporter. Additionally this vehicle has a van sized lockable storage area plus the internal racks, and roof racks for cartage of ladders and extrusions. This vehicle will still be working sites and transporting heavy glass loads long after most vans have been retired.

Both the 3.5M Glazier and the 4.5M Contractor can be fitted with The Glass Racking Company Window Transportation System, a series of components that work together to quickly and safely secure window frames in transit. This solution is very quick to load and unload and dramatically reduces rework resulting from transit damage. The 6.5M crane truck combines glass transportation, glass site lifting trolley transportation, a crane and ramp, and tools and equipment. The 3M glass trailer has a 3M long external glass rack on each side, and is designed with a fold down ramp at the rear. The ramp is used for pulling a glass transport trolley into the trailer using a winch which is mounted in the front of the trailer. The sides are curtained to protect the load and allow for advertising. Options are internal racks and container style doors and internl racks rather than the trolley.

The Glass Racking Company has an extensive range of covered glass carriers spanning from 3M bodies to 10.7M bodies. The cab chassis configurations vary from 4x2 to 8x4. The majority of covered glass transporters are curtainsided to protect the load and provide advertising space. 5.2 x 2.9M Glass Truck
Bodies under 5M are typically designed with glass carrying outside the wheels, with larger bodies having glass carrying racks stepped in between the front and rear wheels. 7.5M x 2.7M Glass Truck
The Glass Racking Company often lengthens the chassis of trucks and adds extra rear axles and wheels to meet the required size and weight carrying requirements of our customers. By providing additional wheels, road user charges are often reduced which can provide a very quick payback. The glide top roof system for The Glass Racking Company trucks allows the full length of the roof to be pulled forward to the cab, allowing easy access to the internal racks from above. The internal space is often loaded with crates of glass via cranes, while the external racks are usually hand loaded with individual items.

We source the cab chassis (or you can buy it direct), we manufacture and fit the body, supply the curtains, and signwrite the curtains and cab. The Glass Racking Company transport trolley system has been developed to allow users to reduce double handling of glass products within the factory and when delivering to their customers. The system comprises transport trolleys, purpose built trucks, and proven process and procedure. This system is available on new purpose built transporters, and also as a retrofit upgrade to exising trucks where much of the investment in the glass body can be re-used. The trolleys are loaded within the glass factory, with the glass secured using safety arms. Prior to transportation strap poles are used to secure the glass to the trolleys for added safety while in transit. The trolleys are then loaded onto the truck using either forklifts or an overhead crane, and secured onto the truck with container lockdowns for safety and ease of securing.

At the customer site the trolleys are unloaded, with the empty trolleys from the previous day loaded onto the truck for return to the glass factory. Many window fabricators find these trolleys useful for positioning the glass next to their sash tables and assembly rigs, and the loaded trolleys are often crane lifted into building sites for site glazing. The transport trolley trucks have trolleys loaded from one side, with a full length glass rack on the opposite side for oversize glass, allowing a complete delivery to be made with one vehicle. The trucks come in various sizes and configurations to suit both long haul and local deliveries of trolleys and glass.

The trucks carry a full set of retention poles for the maximum number of transport trolleys loaded onto the vehicle at any one time. It is the truck drivers responsibility to manage this stock of poles. This means that for example a 5 bay trolley truck would have enough poles for 5 trolleys, but the truck would manage at least 15 trolleys (5 onboard, 5 in the glass factory being loaded and 5 at the customer site being unloaded). While the trolleys are being loaded in the glass factory and at the customer site the glass can be retained using our optional safety arms. These are a simple low cost slide in / slide out system for glass retention which retains the glass for movement around the factory. They are not a certified transport retention system (as with the poles) and hence should only be used while in factories. This is the same safety arm as used in our factory trolleys - they are very popular for transport trolleys as the lean of the glass is 5 degrees as opposed to 10 degrees for factory trolleys, and hence there is a greater need for retention within the factory.

The Glass Racking Company provides crane forks to assist with the overhead crane loading and unloading onto the deck of a covered truck. The staple shaped design means that the crane fork can easily work around a hard roofed truck body. Some vehicles are designed with a Moffett forklift mounted to the rear of the vehicle. The Moffett is able to lift itself onto the rear of the vehicle for transportation and electronically connects to the truck to display all truck lights including braking and indicators. Having a Moffett allows the truck driver to be independent when unloading and loading the transport trolleys at the customer site. This minimises disruption to the customer (often a window fabricator) and also allows the glass company to provide the transport trolley system to customers who don’t have an overhead crane or forklift. The Glass Racking Company provides a range of windscreen racks for installation either at the business or in a vehicle such as a van. The racks come in various lengths to allow for configuration specific to your vehicle and needs. Contact points for the windscreen are protected with polymers and foam to reduce damage to the windscreens. Construction is aluminium for lightweight, long life and durability. The rack easily disassembles into a small flat unit for easy storage. The retention system for the windscreens uses polymer cams which are offset so that they can be rotated to tighten against the windscreens to secure them, and loosened for windscreen removal. This provides the best windscreen retention available which reduces the likelihood of rub damage while in transit, and assists with health and safety of staff in the vehicles in the event of a collision.

The Glass Racking Company has developed a totally unique system for retaining windows on a transportation vehicle. The system secures the windows using a very quick and effective pole based system, and ensures that no hard surface touches the window frames while in transit. This dramatically reduces transit rub damage to the window frames and glass, in addition to the time savings over securing the window frames using traditional ropes, straps and carpet. The users load the window frames onto the structure placing the Profoams between each frame. Poles are inserted into the bottom slotted base, hooked on the cleat at the top, and the strap tightened to pull the foam sheathed pole against the outside window frame, compressing the Profoams through the width of the load. The load is now secure. A safety strop is then placed around the entire load.

This retention method is perpendicular to the direction of travel, and there is no forward/ backwards pressure on the window frames as you get with ropes and straps. The window load does not “settle” into place while in transit which is where transit rub damage often occurs. Fixed structures are typically either A-frames, T-frames or U-frames which are connected directly to the vehicle. Some customers choose to have the upright frame removeable so that the truck can be used as a flat bed general purpose truck as required for other duties.The Glass Racking Company designs and fabricates the frame and clads all the bearing surfaces in our non-marking polymer which reduces transit rub on the windows. The deck is usually hardwood ply with our slotted base for positioning the window retention pole, with the option of raised hardwood blocks. External Sprung Glass Retaining Pole The external sprung glass retaining pole is used to secure glass loads to the external racks and racks of vans, utes, trucks and trailers manufactured by The Glass Racking Company.
Retention Poles
The pole is a T6 aluminium extrusion in concave hollow box section. The concave design makes the pole easier to grip, especially in wet conditions, and the concave shape adds strength to the pole. Non-marking polymer retention blocks slide up and down the pole to secure the glass load. The sliding provides unlimited location options for the blocks and means that a wide variety of glass load configurations can be secured with one system.
Height extension in “up” position
At the top of the pole is a spring loaded locating pin. With the pole in place the spring is under pressure and stops the pole from “bouncing out” and reduces noisy rattling while in transit. This is achieved with few moving parts and without the need for the user to tighten fittings, which reduces time and errors. At the bottom of the pole is a locating tongue. The tongue is inserted into one of the slots on the bottom pole retainer. Multiple slots means that the pole can be secured close to the glass loads. The sliding non-marking polymer glass retaining blocks’ role is to provide pressure from the external sprung glass-retaining pole onto the glass load, and transfer that pressure through the glass onto the vertical supports. The sliding design means that the four blocks plus snub block can apply exacting pressure across a sheet of glass. The top blocks have greater reach than the lower blocks to allow for loads with variable sized glass sheets.

The Internal strap glass retaining pole has the same pole extrusion, same bottom retaining tongue, and same blue polymer block system as the External sprung pole. The difference is in the top securing method which uses a strap and cleat with a locking system. For securing glass on the vehicle’s internal racks the pole is positioned close to the load using the bottom retaining tongue, the top is cleated to the frame of the rack, and the strap tightened and locked. Sprung or Strap Window Retaining The Window retention pole uses the same components as the sprung and strap poles, but instead of the blue polymer glass retaining blocks the window retention pole uses a full length copolymer foam sheath. The foam sheath holds all parts of the window (aluminium extrusions, hardware and glass) firm and works with the other components of The Glass Racking Company Window Transportation System to ensure that transit damage to the window frames is minimised.
The pole system reduces the time required to load and unload window frames from a vehicle.

Optional Scissor Clamp
This components role is to work with the non-marking polymer glass retention blocks to provide additional securing. The scissor clamps are of most benefit for retaining glass loads where there are few tall glass sheets and many shorter sheets as the scissor clamp provides greater reach for retaining between the top of the pole and the top of the glass load. The scissor clamps can be folded flat and flush with the pole where glass loads of similar sized glass sheets are being secured. In all positions the scissor clamp has minimal protrusion from the external sprung glassretaining pole and hence does not affect the external dimensions of the vehicle or have parts that could catch.

The nosepiece is supported by dual arms connected to a sliding assembly and locked with simple over centre cams with red levers, which apply pressure to a button, which locks onto the pole. This means that constant pressure is applied to the glass by a system that is locked onto the pole. The reason for the red levers is so that the driver can immediately see from the driving position if the glass load is not secured as the unsecured red levers stick out like flags. The Euro range of trolleys are designed with vertical supports aligned with the base blocks, and with a painted finish have a lower cost of manufacture and sell price. The Glass Racking Company safety arms provide a quick, simple and safe means of securing the glass load when being moved around a factory on an A-frame or L-frame trolley. The safety arm slides with the thickness of the load. Safety Arms are manufactured with an orange zinc coating so that they are clearly visible when being used (and not used) around the factory, making management and adherence to health and safety policy easier. When not retaining glass or windows, the safety arms sit in holders within the ends of the trolley and make the loading and unloading process easier. Safety arms are also available for transport trolleys when being loaded within a factory and at customer sites. Some companies make use of the safety arms mandatory within their company’s health and safety rules.

The single glaze harp trolleys are typically used for pairing panes prior to double glaze production. These trolleys have a routered base of HDPE plastic which allows the units to be slid in and out of position. The plastic coated harp rods support the glass panes and reduce markings and scratches to the glass. Single glaze harp trolleys with additional pins at the top are available for storing taller units such as door panel glass. DGU harp trolleys have the same HDPE plastic base as the single glaze trolleys but with a wider routered slot for DGU retention. These units are typically used for placement of DGUs direct off the production line. Traditionally DGU harp trolleys have been popular with window fabricators and glass shops wanting to store DGUs, but with the advent of the tooth based storage systems (see page 22) this is becoming less popular. Coloured plastic sheathing on the harp bars, in your companys colours, is becoming more popular.

A unique component for storage and handling of glass items is the Metalcraft Tooth. The shape of the tooth ensures that the glass items lock into position for storage and movement around the factory. The tooth is more commonly used for DGU handling, although the benefits are equally as relevant for single glaze.

All our Window factory trestles have a non-marking polymer bearing surface to reduce the scratches and damage that can occur when swarf and small joint sealer stick in the carpet and cardboard most commonly used as bearing surfaces. Our glazing rigs use poles on slides with clamps to secure the windows and doors in position for glazing. Rigs are typically designed and sized to suit the needs and building. Trestle Topper is a polymer bearing surface housed in a T6 aluminium extrusion which can be secured onto the top of existing trestles and work benches. Trestle Topper provides a superior work surface to the carpet and cardboard most commonly used by the industry as it doesn’t hold swarf and small joint sealer which can lead to scratching and damage. The Glass Racking Company cut length tree trolley provides horizontal storage and movement of aluminium cut lengths. Horizontal storage suits larger extrusions such as mullions and door frames where vertical storage can lead to scratching damage during loading and unloading. The standard cut length tree trolley is 1.9M long and 1.8M tall. The Glass Racking Company provides a range of storage systems to assist factories to conserve valuable floor space while allowing quick, easy and safe access to bulk glass storage. Traditional A-frame storage systems provide a cheap form of easy access storage but are very inefficient in storage of glass. As there becomes a wider variety of glass types and sizes required to be stored within factories, and factory floor space becomes more valuable, The Glass Racking Company storage solutions become increasingly cost justified. The Glass Racking Company provides Concertina and Swing racks. Concertina racks provide for bulk storage of glass on leaning bays which are mounted on a fixed steel structure. Users “wind” the bays to open spaces for access to the glass. The space savings come from the rack allowing easy access to the different glass types in storage without having simultaneous access to all glass items. Additionally because the bays all lean the same way (unlike A-frames) the floor space required is halved.

Swing racks use pivoting leaves to hold the glass. In much the same way as the Concertina racks, Swing racks have all the glass leaning the same way. Leaves are manually swung to create an opening to access a particular store of glass. When compared to A-frames, the space required is around half. Most users find both Concertina and Swing racks provide easier and quicker access to the glass than traditional A-frames. Concertina racks are typically used for bulk storage of stock sheets (such as 3140x1840, 3660x2440 and 5200x3160), while Swing racks are typically used for job lots such as those loaded off a DGU line, in a window fabrication factory, or glazing business.

The Glass Racking Company provides a range of site lifting trolleys and frames to assist with positioning glass and window products closer to the installation location when on-site. All our site lifting equipment is rated for glass load, and comes with a New Zealand Engineers certification statement and plate affixed to the trolley or frame. This means that crane operators at sites will lift our frames into position. Lifting frames have flat bases that allow them to be sat in position on site. Lifting trolleys have quality USA castors rated for the engineers specified load, and able to be moved around the site (on a flat surface) once positioned by a crane operator or forklift. Eyes at the top of the trolleys and frames are used for overhead crane lifting, while slots in the base are for forklift access and lifting. All trolleys and frames have a galvanised finish for longevity and appearance, and come with a complete set of strap retention poles similar to those used on our transportation systems.

This equipment is designed to assist on-site glass and window workers to move items from their vehicles closer to the place of installation. By taking the weight of multiple units the staff reduce the time taken to lift and carry individual items. There is also a health and safety benefit with reduced fatigue and risk of injury. The Collapsible site tooth trolley is a 14 unit trolley designed for moving DGUs from the vehicle to the point of installation. The trolley folds down for ease of transporting, and folds up to support up to 14 DGUs in a trolley with pneumatic wheels to allow easier access across site debris, cobbled paths, and the like. The trolley can be pulled up gutters, and at only 600mm wide passes through most gateways. These trolleys are very popular with retrofit double glazers. The 1.1M x 1.1M collapsible site L-frame trolley is designed as a multi-purpose site trolley. The rear L-frame removes for transportation, as do the safety arms. At 600mm wide, with a 330mm ledge, and four quality USA castors rated at 460kg each this trolley can be loaded with significant glass loads. Units can overhang the trolley lengthways. Units loaded onto the L-frame can be moved around a site to the point of installation.
