I always wanted to be an actor and shifted to Mumbai last year to get a break into films. Her dreams came true through the Star Plus TV show Nisha Ke Cousins, in which Purvi plays the parallel lead as Dolly. A Kothrud resident, Purvi bagged the role through a test and auditions that took four months. “I had a couple of film offers, but zeroed in on this serial as I am not keen on run-of-the-mill, cliched roles,” she
says. “I wanted to make an impact with my debut and this serial gave me that opportunity. The story is different and not the regular saas-bahu saga. My reel character Dolly’s

They have been more excited about everything than me.” The initial days in Mumbai were tough. “Other professions have a step-by-step graph and you know what to do next. But in acting, you have no idea what tomorrow will bring. Competition is vast and you bump into (struggling) actors in every lane and society. Film: Expendables III Cast: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham and Mel Gibson Director: Patrick Hughes
W
hat happens when you get a gang of once-ragingly popular actors past their prime and build a movie around them, hoping that people will flock to the theatres if only to watch them walk around each other? You get a lot of guns and explosions, testosterone and tattooed muscle display but a plot so weak as if the film-makers were trying to prove that it is not necessary that a film has a plot. Actually, The Expendables III might have actually made a point here. The fact that Sylvester Stallone was TGS Rating willing to make three The Expendables movies, all of which are considered to oood be commercially successful, says a lot about how much viewers care about plot and acting in an action movie. Gibson has delivered the best mostly one-dimensional and shallow. Lee performance in the movie. The way he plays Christmas (Jason Statham) acts like he wants the role of the cunning, conniving and ruthless to marry a knife, as usual. Gunnar Jensen arms dealer brings about the only depth there (Dolph Lundgren) plays his part of a really is in the movie, and he also manages to cover mean guy with a good heart well but is not up the stupidity of the character. For example, given enough screen time. The worst acting, in a scene where Stonebanks is trying to however, comes from Ronda Rousey. Apart convince the other Expendables that Ross from the lamest and cheesiest one-liners, himself is not entirely the good guy he seems Rousey plays the part of Luna with such to be, Gibson successfully creates doubt in the gimmicky masculinity as if being feminine viewer’s mind and brings a touch of grey to is forbidden by The Expendables. Basically, the otherwise blatantly black and white roles Rousey’s job in the film was to scream that in the movie. there is a woman in The Expendables now, who The other characters in the movie are is as tough as any of the men. Why? Because
she can look grumpy and knit her brows and can call bigger men ‘ladies’ as if that’s supposed to be an insult. (Warning: If you are a feminist, do not watch this movie. You are likely to want to murder someone.) But perhaps the saddest thing to see in The Expendables is the way the characters of Antonio Banderas and Arnold Schwarzenegger folded out. Banderas’ character is a clown whose jokes never work. He is the comic relief in the movie who is treated like dirt by everyone. Even his comic relief does not work as the viewers will end up
dying from an overdose of lame punchlines. Schwarzenegger, who is considered by many to be the best and the last action hero (pun intended), is reduced to a character who only smokes cigars, keeps calling Stallone’s character an idiot and expresses great affection for Jet Li’s character. In a nutshell, The Expendables is the sort of movie you want to watch if you want to see Hollywood actors doing stuff which usually happens in a typical Bollywood action flick, only with better graphics and cuss words in English.eye. Rani Mukerji is by far the best lady cop of Bollywood
R
ani Mukerji is all set to play the role of a cop in her upcoming film Mardaani, which will releases this Friday (22 August). Mukerji plays CBI officer Shivani Shivaji Roy, a tough cop who, in the tradition of Bollywoodsytle policing, singlehandedly takes on a child prostitution racket. What else can we expect from a woman who has Shivaji as her second name? While Roy’s policewoman avatar is a departure for the actress who has been seen in mostly very girly roles (we will ignore the rather terrible cross-dressing cricketer she played in Dil Bole Hadippa), Shivani Shivaji Roy is the latest in a long list of fearsome female police officers from Bollywood. The real difference is that she doesn’t have a personal vendetta that she’s carrying out, using her job, and neither is she strutting her stuff
like a model. Instead, she’s looking like a regular woman — which is in itself unheard of in Bollywood. If the trailer of Mardaani is anything to go by, Mukerji’s Shivani walks and talks like a man, and can pack a punch and shoot bullets without hesitation. Since she is a figment of Pradeep Sarkar’s imagination, she also uses hammy punchlines while threatening the bad guys and might do some absurd stunts in the film, which may just turn her into not-your-everydaylady-cop character after all. However, to know how Mukerji’s Shivani turns out, we will have to wait till Friday. Being born into a traditional Bengali family, I already knew the nuances of our traditional cooking and after I got married, I made my grandmother’s dishes for my husband. However, he prefers my mother-in-law’s aloo-posto (potatoes with poppy seeds). It’s a delicious dry accompaniment to rice and curries. I didn’t know what I was doing wrong — was it the spices? Or the amount of oil? Or the ghee? I started assisting my mother-in-law whenever she was making it and learnt the secret. The potatoes have to be cut uniformly and fried until golden. The posto has to be soaked and ground to a fine paste, before adding it to the dish. Aloo Posto Ingredients 5 - 6 medium-sized potatoes 2 green chillies 2 tbsp mustard oil 1 tsp pure ghee 1/2 tsp onion seeds (kalonji) 4 tbsp poppy seeds (khuskhus) Salt to taste Method Cut the potatoes into one-inch pieces and soak them in water. Soak poppy seeds in a cup of warm water for 15 to 20 minutes. Drain the water and grind the poppy seeds into a fine paste. Heat mustard oil in a pot till it reaches smoking point. Let it cool and heat again on medium heat. Sauté kalonji in oil. Add potatoes and fry on medium heat for about five minutes. Stir in poppy seed paste. Pour in half a cup of water and stir fry on low heat until the potatoes are almost cooked. Now mix salt and slit green chillies. Continue to stir fry for another hew minutes until potatoes are completely cooked. Serve with a dollop of ghee.
not trained formally, I am able to make dishes such as kadhi, methi muthia, bajra and moong dal khichdi. His favourite is my dal-kichdi, served with ghee. He likes it so much that I make it every alternate day. But his all-time favourite is methi thepla that my mother-in-law serves with chutney or ghee. I have mastered the art from her. The theplas are made of wheat flour and fenugreek leaves. The secret lies in making the perfect dough — a right balance of spices and fenugreek leaves. My mother-in-law has tutored me in kneading the dough perfectly. While rolling out the theplas, she insists that they be even on all sides. Methi theplas Ingredients 1 cup wheat flour 1 bunch fenugreek leaves 2 tbsp coriander leaves Pinch red chilli Powder 1/2 tbsp: coriander Powder Pinch of turmeric Pinch of asafoetida 1/2 tbsp ginger-garlic paste 1 teaspoon oil Salt to taste Curd-optional (for kneading) Neha Rajput Method Add water as needed in small incremental quantities and knead all the ingredients into a smooth, soft dough (like roti dough). Grease its surface with oil. Cover the dough with clean muslin cloth and leave aside for 15-20 minutes. Divide into seven equal parts and roll them into even balls. Roll evenly and roast on a tawa. Serve with liberal amount of ghee.

I started helping out in the kitchen and it was a great accomplishment for me when I was able to make chole-bhature for the whole family. My husband loved it. That was the best compliment. Now I am trying to perfect the delicate khandvi my mother-in-law makes. The trick in making this soft fluffy snack lies in stirring the paste to the right consistency so that it can be rolled out evenly. Chole bhature Ingredients: 1 cup chickpeas, 1 green chilli, ½ tsp chilli powder, 1 tsp coriander powder, 1 tsp garam masala or chhole masala, 1/2 tsp amchur, 1/2 tsp turmeric powder, 1/2 tsp sugar, pinch of asafoetida (optional) and salt as per taste Khada masala 1 tsp cumin seeds, 1 large bay leaf, 2-inch piece of cinnamon, 2-3 cloves, 2 green cardamoms, 2-3 black peppercorns For gravy: Grind into paste: 1 medium sized onion, 2 tomatoes, ½-inch ginger, 3 to 4 cloves of garlic and all the masala mentioned aboveut Method: Grind green chillies and ginger together. Mix gram flour, buttermilk, turmeric powder, asafoetida, green chilli paste and salt together. Test thickness by spreading a bit on a plate. If after cooling for about one minute, the mixture can be rolled and lifted, it is ready for spreading. Spread the rest thinly and evenly, with the back of a spoon, on any working surface. Let cool and cut in 2-inch strips. Roll up the strips (like mini Swiss rolls) and arrange on a plate. Heat oil in a vessel and fry the mustard seeds. When the seeds start popping, take off fire, add the asafoetida and pour over the arranged rolls. barnalee.handique@goldensparrow.com

The new menu is a contrast to Savera fare. “This is a popular spot and my aim is to cater to the needs of every one. The focus is on traditional Maharashtrian fare such as dadpe pohe, pithla, bharli vangi and misal,” says Sarpotdar, who is assisted by his son Sanat. The restaurant opens at 6.30 am and shuts at midnight. The menu in the morning caters to the walkers and sporty crowd. That’s why there are six tea options, such as Irani tea, herbal tea, amrutulya tea, black tea, iced and green tea. The snacks include KrishnaSudama (poha and upma served together), shankarpala, dadpe pohe and thalipeeth along with regular south Indian favourites. The lunch and dinner menu holds a variety. There’s Delhi chaat (tweaked to suit Puneri tastes), Amritsari kulche chole (the authentic version with freshly ground masalas that give the right mix of spice and sourness), and pithla (besan based wet mix accompanied by bhakri) of the perfect consistency, with mustard and coriander. There’s seating for 140 in the vegetarian section and 60 more in the non-vegetarian section. The latter offers family dining experience with fresh masalas ground in-house. The highlight of the non-veg menu is komadi vada, made from a 80-year-old traditional Sarpotdar recipe. The flour for the vada is from the Konkan and soaked overnight to make the perfect batter. complementing a process by striving for similar flavours, or by finding the perfect bottle of wine which lends a something extra to the dish… a seasoning, you can say. Complementarity is difficult to achieve when the dishes are highly spiced, fortified with chillies,” he says. There is a difference in taste, colour and processing each wine goes through before it is bottled and marketed. Paul Schlemmer, sommelier at Zampa Grover Vineyards, says, “For instance, the Zampa Soiree Brut is pink in colour. It has red cherries with a hint of strawberry and subtle yeast character that gives it the aroma, complexity and appeal. The wine is light and creamy initially, and the fruity characters give it persistence and length of flavour.” The wine should be served at 6°C and can be paired with mildy Indian, Japanese, Chinese and Thai cuisine. The pale green Sauvignon Blanc is both youthful and fresh. The fresh tropical fruits and hints of grassiness give the wine vitality, depth and character. The wine is best paired with fresh green salads, pastas, pizzas and mild cheese
and should served at 8°C- 10°C. The Grover La Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon goes well with roasted lamb, tenderloin, pasta, game, paté, soft full-flavour cheeses and with Indian specialties. The serving temperature is between 16°C- 18°C. The Grover Art Collection rosé is an intense bouquet of berries and sherry, fruity, light bodied and smooth. Spicy fish and poultry preparations pair well with this wine. It is best served chilled at 8°C-10°C. barnalee.handique@goldensparrow.com

Elitist Hyundai has introduced the updated i20 amidst a slew of launches by manufacturers in this segment. Is the new i20 as ‘Elite’ as its name suggests?

he new Elite i20 aims to address a key bugbear in the old car: handling. A lot of this improvement comes from what underpins the car. The floorpan is now longer, the car is wider by 24mm, the height remains the same and interestingly, overall length is down 10mm. The petrol and diesel engines have been carried over from the old i20 as is the basic front and rear suspension and electric power steering. But the spring rates have been further tweaked for this car. Hyundai thinks it is different enough to be called a second generation car. It is definitely new generation in the way it looks. Hyundai calls this new styling theme “Fluidic Sculpture Version 2.0”. It’s more subtle, more toned down with less edges and angles and the focus was to draw lines that appeal to a wider bunch of people. There are plenty of things that grab your attention. The thrust out, hexagonal grille with its honeycomb mesh and the pulled back headlamps for example, the strong character line and the blacked out C-pillar on the sides, and even the Alfa Romeo-like tail-lamps. The interiors have been thoroughly refreshed as well. Quality has improved and there is appeal in the way the centre console is angled slightly towards the driver. There’s an air of classiness to the design but overall, we liked the Punto Evo’s dash design and the VW Polo’s choice of materials more. The rear seats are seriously spacious now with great leg room, head room and width.
The Elite i20 does feel like a properly big car from the inside. The 285-litre boot is massive too and the rear seats split and fold. The engines have been carried over from the old i20 and that means you get the 1.4-litre, 89bhp common-rail diesel and a 1.2-litre petrol motor. The gear ratios on the diesel have been changed to make it more responsive and it is impressively smooth. At idle and low revs you will be hard pressed to tell it is a diesel. The petrol feels responsive initially, but then there’s a curious flat spot in the power delivery that disappears only after the engine starts to spin past 4000rpm. From there on it pulls hard right to its redline, but really, that mid-range could use a bit more punch. Like the diesel though, this is a smooth and refined engine. And so, on to the biggest improvement in the car, its handling. There is noticeably less slop in the chassis and there’s a big difference to the way the i20 rides and handles. There seems to be a newfound stability through corners and the Elite feels quite secure even when you are leaning hard on the tyres. At middle to high speeds, bump absorption is very good but it does feel a tad stiff at low speeds. What spoils the party though is the Elite i20’s light steering. At speeds it simply doesn’t have enough weight or feedback to really allow you to let loose. And, at parking speeds, it is a tad heavy, which is strange. The i20 has never been cheap, but what it does give you is lots of equipment in exchange for your money. The Asta comes

All this costs money – the diesel Elite i20 Asta, at Rs 7.67 lakh, costs about Rs 30,000 more than a Polo diesel Highline and about half a lakh more than a Punto Evo diesel. It looks great, is well-equipped and is a seriously spacious car. The up in quality will appeal to many as will the more secure handling characteristics. It may not be as fun to drive or have the outright attention to detail as some of its competition, but make no mistake, this is one very well-rounded car. If you can stretch your budget a bit, the Elite i20 is worth a long, hard look. ouseph@@evo.in

THRILL OF DRIVING
Renault is launching the four-wheel drive version of its Duster. We give it an off-road welcome
Four-wheel drive makes the Duster more confidence-inspiring, especially on wet roads By Abhay Verma

he Duster has won accolades for its car-like comfort, performance and handling and elevated Renault to household status in India. Now, the lacuna of a four-wheel drive option has also been addressed. The four-wheel drive version was being produced and exported from the Chennai plant, but Renault is launching it in India only now. The 2WD and AWD Dusters look near identical, except for minor changes (darkened headlamps, darker-hued alloys and AWD stickers). On the road, the AWD feels no different from the two-wheel drive Duster, being endowed with the same plush ride. The electro-mechanical steering offers great feel and feedback as before, and the good thing is now it doesn’t kick back if you hit a bump mid-corner. The Duster AWD gets all-wheel independent multi-link suspension (a segment first) to cope with the off-road stresses and aid handling, which makes for a ground clearance of 210mm (up from 205mm). Maximum wading depth is 400mm, while maximum approach angle is 30 degrees. To make all this possible, the architecture of the engine compartment, electricals and electronics have been revised. Renault says the Duster AWD isn’t meant for hardcore off-roading but is aimed at those who enjoy driving. Of course, we wouldn’t expect buyers to take to the serious stuff, but

or some, high-street fashion is an investment — the returns are seen in the way they carry themselves, or how confident and assured the label makes them feel. Money is definitely not an issue because the non-tangible returns are value for money. What does loyalty to a label mean and what is it that makes it worth it?
Ahil Amar, businessman and freelance social media strategist Twenty-seven-year-old Ahil Amar, has a fetish for Nike products, be it T-shirts, gym gloves, dry fits (high-performance fabrics that removes sweat from the body and on to the fabric), shoes, and the like. “I have been religiously using Nike products for the last five-six years. I have complete faith in them, given their quality that is the best and superior to any other sports wear brand. Nike is extremely professional in deliveries, which makes the brand even more attractive,” he says. Most of Ahil’s purchases are need-based but he occasionally gives into impulsive pleasures. “Just the other day, I found a T-shirt that cost about Rs 2500. The moment I saw it, I knew I had to buy it. It’s been a month and I have still not worn it. I did not need it but just knowing that I possess it elates me,” he says. Moreover Ahil’s favourite football club, Manchester United, has been associated with Nike for 12 years. “Any Manchester United merchandise that I want, I can get at Nike. In 2009, I purchased a black Man U sweatshirt-cumjersey which I rarely wear,” says the Wanowrie between Rs 2700 and 2900, which was pretty expensive. Today, it would cost around Rs 3500.” He intends to pick up the latest Manchester United jersey, which will probably be the last Nike Man U jersey. “This is the last year of their contract with Nike. The team has signed up with Adidas for the next 10 years, which is why the last jersey is going to be even more special.” Will he now shift his brand loyalty? “No. I love Nike products way too much for that to happen. On some days, I’m dressed in Nike from head to toe. I have bought workout gloves and dry fits for about Rs 1600, much more than what I would pay in any local store. One would be ready to spend that much only if s/he swears by that product. I will now have to shift to Adidas for Manchester United products, but my loyalty towards Nike remains unchanged,” he says. Apart for the jersey which could cost about Rs 3500, dry fit worth Rs 1600 and Nike special running shoes worth Rs 4000 are on Ahil’s shopping list.

FEATURES Juhi Banerjee, fashion stylist Juhi Banerjee’s profession takes her to a lot of places, where she shops from high street labels. “As a fashion stylist, I definitely follow brands,” says the 23-year-old. “Money is not a criterion for me. If you are fashion conscious and have the money, you should buy the one expensive bag you have always wanted rather than three or four bags that cost the same . If I want something, I go ahead and get it. I won’t hold myself back because it’s expensive.” Juhi buys a lot of stuff from the online portal Top Shop (www.topshop.com), which combines high street and couture fashion. “It has a very classy, elegant and stylish collection. Nothing costs less than Rs 5000. The Collective in Koregaon Park Plaza is my favourite. It has many high street brands and I know that whenever I go there, I’ll find something I like,” she says. “Zara has a very European tilt that I’m not very much into,” says the Salunkhe Vihar resident. “I might find something interesting once in a while, but it is not a brand I swear by. I’m quite a random shopper and go for brands like Promod, Chemistry, Steve Madden, and Charles and Keith,” she says. Juhi is crazy about perfumes as well. “At the end of the day, it is a feelgood factor. If you have the money, why shouldn’t you spend it on fashion labels? After all, it is what you like and it makes you feel good about yourself.”
Brand fetish
Swapnil Shelar, businessman
RAHUL RAUT
In the construction industry, one has to be extremely image conscious, 28-year-old Swapnil Shelar invests both time and money in his appearance. “Brands portray who you really are,” he says. “I meet so many people, and whether you agree or not, one’s dressing style does leave an impression. People only believe what they see. I spend a lot of money on clothes and shoes and I feel it is worth it.” Swapnil, a shopaholic, doesn’t need an occasion to head to the stores. “I can’t really put a finger on the number of times I go shopping, but there are times when I am out for some work and end up shopping instead,” says the Wanowrie resident. Sometimes he splurges up to Rs 50,000 in one go. “I wear a lot of formals, so my most trusted brand is Louis Philippe. When it comes to jeans, I prefer Wrangler and Lee Cooper. My shoes are either Jack & Jones or Nike,” he says. ishani.bose@goldensparrow.com
Leena Juriasinghani Unkule loves shopping at Zara and Mango
Leena Juriasinghani Unkule, HR personnel Leena Juriasinghani Unkule has a strong emotional connect with Zara and Mango. “Whenever I have a bad day and I want some retail therapy,” says the 27-year-old, “I know these two will definitely cheer me up. I know I’ll walk out of the stores with an ensemble that will boost my morale, make me confident and turn my mood around completely. Once I’m done shopping, I can’t wait to go home and see myself in it.” Leena, who also has a shoe fetish, sees Steve Madden and Aldo as ‘sole’ mates. “I have been following these brands for over five years,” says the Aundh resident. “Even though they are expensive, I don’t mind spending a little more because I know I will get what I need. They offer shoes that are comfortable and stylish and in a diverse range. Why should I go anywhere else?” Leena spends Rs 3000-7000 in one go at her favourite stores.
Brands make you feel special “Luxury labels and mass cult brands create highly desirable sub-cultures,” says Josy Paul, chairman and chief creative officer at BBDO (Batten, Barton, Durstine & Osborn) India. “They personify a set of values, beliefs, attitude and symbols that appeal to a select group of people. These fans become unofficial ambassadors of such brands. There’s an exclusivity that makes the followers feel more special than others. It’s like belonging to a culture class that not everybody has access to. It’s more than a brand, it’s a statement.” “Brands seek to address varied desires of consumers and branding is a key aspect of this process,” says Neisha Sylva, director, Bubble Design and Visual Communication. “It creates an experience and a bridge between product attributes and consumer needs. Take the case of say, Rolex. It is a premium quality product and through branding, a connect emerges with those for whom it is a status symbol, as well as for others who see it as an investment. Good branding ensures that the consumer will return for more.”

Standing tall in changing times The fast disappearing ‘wadas’ represent the traditional architecture of Pune
Biniwale Wada: The Biniwale wada at Budhwar Peth is the grand three-chowk model as against the one courtyard model that was prevalent during those days.

he importance of community and close-knit family during the reign of the Peshwas in the 18th and 19th centuries gave birth to the wadas, residential complexes inside a walled edifice. A typical wada had raised plinths, a central courtyard and wooden elements with carved brackets showing the wood-carving skills of local craftsmen, with elegant motifs. Wadas symbolise the era of the Peshwas. The diwankhanas (reception room or hall) has cypress-shaped columns associated with Maratha architecture. The city at one time had almost four hundred wadas, ranging from the fourroomed small ones to the grander ones like Raste Wada.
Some street fronts presented an unbroken façade of beautiful wadas with their ornate windows and carved brackets, balconies and beams. These were timber-framed brick constructions built around one, two or Keeping several courtyards. They had usually storeys and presented a wonderful traditions two human scale to the street fronts. The alive wada was shielded from the outside, as there were no windows at the street level. It was an inward looking house with the upper floors featuring large and graceful windows with cusped arches, typical suru or cypress columns, carved wooden ceilings and brackets. The wadas ran out of fashion due to neglect and those that remain are run down. Changing lifestyles and re-development have taken their toll. However, a few wadas still stand tall, proudly preserving the rich, cultural heritage of Pune.
