Was the gap between projects deliberate? “I don’t think it has been a long break,” says Kunal. “I started working on Raja Natwarlal right after I finished Jannat 2. I hope the audience enjoys it.” Kunal’s films deals with various issues and focuses on different relationships in the plot. “I have always given importance to the story,” says Kunal. “My films reflect my art of story-telling. Kutcher, Kunis to wed in July next year? The couple is getting ready to welcome their daughter and having the wedding next summer seems logical.
Bollywood Buzz It helps to be thick-skinned in film industry: Alia Bhatt All of 21, she’s young and versatile unlike others of her generation, and even in terms of dealing with criticism, Highway star Alia Bhatt has a mature approach. She says being “thick-skinned” comes in handy. “Criticism and appreciation should be welcome at all times. But it helps to be thick-skinned in the industry,” Alia told IANS when asked how she reacts and handles situations when the audience gives extreme reactions to her work. The actress, who can sing as well as she can dance, is currently active on social networking platform Twitter, where she often tweets to her over 1.8 million Twitterati.
Alia admits “digital is a massive space” to explore, but she says “it’s important to not get lost in it”. “I feel there has to be a line that you draw between your life and the virtual world,” said the actress, who is the youngest daughter of acclaimed film-maker Mahesh Bhatt. Alia has been surprising viewers and critics alike movie after movie. If she played a brand-conscious, make-up laden and arrogant girl in her launchpad project, Alia left a lasting impression with her powerful act in Highway as a city-slick girl who experiences a sense of freedom and gets a taste of reality only after being abducted. This was followed by her easy portrayal of the fun-loving, carefree and Tamilian girl-in-love with a Punjabi boy in 2 States. Alia has recently also earned appreciation for Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, in which she has essayed the role of a fearless girl, who fights to live life her way. Her association with showbiz notwithstanding, she says “girls have a right on make-up”, but she personally does not like to preach any style or fashion mantra. IANS

It’s amazing to work with Bollywood stars, Manj tells Anjali Shetty

Manj has recorded hit songs like Whistle Baja and The Pappi Song from the Five film Heropanti starring Tiger Shroff and Kriti questions Sanon, on his new label. Manj also features in is Salman Khan’s Kick and Dr Cabbie. He speaks to TGS Life on going solo and Bollywood.
us about Manj Musik. 1TheTell Why did you decide to go solo? decision was not based on the
need to go solo, but because I lost my older brother Kulypaji, who was my partner in creating those RDB
anthems. When he left this earth, I decided that it was time we should lay RDB to rest. My solo career with
Akshay Kumar? It was amazing working with such huge actors. They teach you so much about the industry. Akshaypaji was the one who got me started in the industry by giving me the first opportunity to sing Rafta Rafta in Namaste London and from then on it was a rollercoaster ride of making hits for Akshaypaji. Each artist has his own ideas and they all know what they like and don’t. Saif is very musically inclined as he plays the guitar and Salman knows what he wants. Akshay has always had a great ear for music and can smell a hit when he hears it. I loved working with them all and we have more projects in the future.
What is your take on music 3 in Bollywood? What do you enjoy the most about it?
It’s a global platform. Bollywood music is not what it used to be. It now merges with hip-hop, houserap, Punjabi, Hindi, ballads, Sufi etc. It caters to everyone in the world now. What I love about it is that I can experiment with all genres and still create a hit number with a Punjabi touch! It is fun to read a script and write a specific scene for a film.
Is there a music composer 4 and singer you would like to work with?
AR Rahman of course and Arijit Singh. I love his voice; it’s soft but hard and funky yet soothing.
One film you wished you 5 were a part of? I really wish I could have been part
of Sholay, maybe the remake of it. I would have loved to make a Gabbar Singh anthem! anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com

Bringing the bromance back
AUGUST 2, 2014 PUNE
Reviews
By Mihir Fadnavis
Film: 22 Jump Street Cast: Channing Tatum and Johan Director: Phil Lord, Christopher Miller
F
ive years ago Phil Lord and Chris Miller caught everyone’s attention with the hilarious Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, an animation film filled with off-kilter, nerdy jokes. Then, they went on to damage ribcages around the world with the singularly howlarious 21 Jump Street and followed it up with the funniest movie of 2014, The Lego Movie. Lord and Miller are seemingly unstoppable because 22 Jump Street combines all the goodies from their previous work while adding a few new ones to make one entertaining ball of mayhem. 22 Jump Street continues the goofy adventures of the 21 Jump Street duo, Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) as they graduate to going undercover at a university. What makes Lord and Miller’s films so much fun is that they’re all self-aware. So this isn’t just another sequel where the heroes do the exact same thing on a bigger budget. This is a sequel in which everyone — from the actors to the directors and the audience — knows they’re doing the exact same things but on a bigger budget.
Schmidt and Jenko’s new blindness to diversity TGS Rating office, 22 Jump Street, with the leads’ inability to oood has moved one block and spot the difference. Nick is literally shiny, glossy Offerman’s Deputy Chief and big for no valid reason. Hardy tells Schmidt and Instead of the Korean Jesus from Jenko in as many words that the previous film’s office, there’s the Jump Street program reboot now a Vietnamese Jesus and it’s used was once thought to be a disaster, to take a potshot at Hollywood’s but became a runaway success so a
second mission was inevitable. Hill and Tatum somehow manage to lodge their tongues firmly in their cheeks while they’re told all this. Just like in the first movie, Schmidt and Jenko have one simple mission: go undercover in order to infiltrate the drug dealers and find the suppliers. With the issue of a ‘plot’
quickly out of the way, 22 Jump Street storms head-on into becoming the most bromantic movie we’ve seen. Schmidt and Jenko take the “bros before hoes” notion to galactic levels. Lord and Miller spare no expense and even take a dig at the moronic action films of Michael Bay and his love for pointless chase scenes. There’s also a bombastic, heroic showdown at Spring Break, an old favourite of coming-of-age college sagas. The satire of the action genre is not as effective as in films like Hot Fuzz for example, because so much of 22 Jump Street is about Schmidt and Jenko that Peter Stormare as the villainous Ghost is severely underdeveloped. But then again, 22 Jump Street isn’t about the action or the drama or the bad guy. It’s about Schmidt and their bromance coming of age. And just to underscore this point, the end credits — which are the cleverest movie outro since Jackie Chan’s credit roll outtakes — show the future of Jump Street as an unending series of sequels (including 21 Jump Street, Space Odyssey). It’s Lord and Miller’s equivalent of “happily ever after” and thanks to how hysterical the fictitious Jump Street sequels, they do in fact bring a tear to your eye. roars. The Bessi roar back. The Thracian army roars some more. Hercules joins in. The Bessi roar, again. The audience, meanwhile, is left wondering why these two armies aren’t getting on with it and attacking each other with violent gusto. (They do manage this, eventually.) Everything, from screenplay to production design, seems half-baked. It’s as though everyone began the film enthusiastically and then lost interest along the way. One fight merges with the next and the final reveal is a rare combination of predictable and senseless. While Hercules isn’t unwatchable, it is disappointing because an action spectacle like this one has no business being boring. You’re better off imagining what adventures could await Hercules and Singham if they did actually joined biceps. (By special arrangement with Firstpost.com)

I NDULG E Healthy tiffin treats Pan seared Polenta with Ratatouille

Ingredients Polenta, 1/2 cup milk, preferably skim, 1 cup coarse cornmeal (Polenta), 2 1/2 cups water or vegetable stock, 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil, more for pan
Ratatouille Topping 8 medium sun-dried tomatoes, 1 tbsp olive oil, 1 large onion(s), 5 clove(s) (medium) garlic clove(s), 1 medium green pepper(s), 1 medium sweet red pepper(s), 1/4 cup(s) grated Parmesan cheese, 1/2 cup low fat mozzerrella cheese
Directions Brush a layer of olive oil on a pizza pan or cookie sheet. In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, combine milk with stock. Add cornmeal in a steady stream, whisking all the while to prevent. Turn heat to low and simmer, until thick, 10 or 15 minutes. If mixture becomes too thick, whisk in a bit more water. Stir one tablespoon oil into cooked cornmeal (polenta). Spoon it onto prepared pan, working quickly so polenta does not stiffen; spread it evenly to a thickness of about 1/2 inch all over. Sprinkle with salt and pepper, cover baking sheet with plastic wrap and put it in refrigerator until it is firm, an hour or more.
Wooing women with their culinary skills These new generations ‘gastrosexuals’ flaunt their culinary skills to win their women’s heart By Barnalee Handique @ barnalee

ith more women becoming independent, confident and selfdriven, they desire men who can help out in the kitchen. A quality meal is what impresses them more than flowers or compliments. TGS Life speaks to three Puneites about their cooking skills and what delicacies they prepare to win their women’s hearts. Raaihul Bhuyarkar, fashion designer I love to cook at least one meal every day as it relaxes my mind and body. Cooking is actually a more rewarding and creative form of domestic contribution than other chores. I check the recipe on the Internet and compare it with different cookery books. I try to prepare something new or modify a tried and tested dish. It is challenging to master a particular dish. Once the recipe is finalised, I source the ingredients from the nearby market. I do goof up sometimes with spices and herbs but balance the taste by adding extra alcohol and other ingredients. I mostly prepare continental dishes such as salad, soups and pasta.
Nutritious snack Prawn Square

Ingredient: 5 prawns 15 assorted olives 20gm arugula lettuce 1 orange
When in doubt, add more alcohol, says Raaihul Bhuyarkar
10ml olive oil 40gm tomato Salsa Salt and pepper to seasoning.
Method: Make a square of prawn olive. Marinated with salt pepper and oregano just. Sear prawn on hot plate. Arrange square on plate garnish with arugula lettuce along with salsa. (Recipes by Abhimanyu Sinha, chef, Le Meridien)
I surprised my wife Arti by cooking an elaborate meal after just one month of our marriage. That night I made tomato soup, fresh salad and baked a dish consisting of mushrooms, thyme, garlic, black pepper and olive oil. Everything turned out well and the spread was just out of the world. I had placed a couple of candles at the centre of the table to give the romantic effect. Arti was touched by my gesture. Raaihul’s secret weapon: When in doubt, add more alcohol.

Harsh Todi believes cooking is a macho pursuit
Harsh Todi, IT professional I think cooking is a macho pursuit and men are perfectionists when it comes to this particular skill. My friends and I pick up pots and pans and whip up four meals a week. It used to be a necessity when we were bunking together in a PG accommodation as restaurants were closed when we returned after work. Many nights we had to go to bed hungry. I learnt to boil eggs, cook noodles and make tea, and found that cooking was fun. Slowly, I started cooking rice and vegetables, and today I can cook up the most delectable dishes. Last Sunday, I tried a simple traditional Indian cuisine for my girlfriend Ekta. Keeping in mind the rainy season, I cooked a dum biryani for lunch and served it with pineapple raita, which is a cooling and refreshing side dish for any meal. I like to use freshly ground spices, tomatoes and lots of onions as the flavour of these components is the hallmark in this dish. For the raita, I used tinned pineapples mixed with creamy yoghurt and garnished it with a dash of cumin, black pepper and green chillies. Other than main dishes, conjuring up mouth-watering side dishes is my forte. Harsh’s secret weapon: Freshly ground spices which he sources it from Shivaji Market at Camp.
Jeet Rai, trading consultant Before preparing a dish, dicing vegetables in correct proportions is very important. The size of cut vegetables affects the cooking time and taste of the dish. For salads, I cut tomatoes, cabbage and cucumbers in different shapes and sizes. While cooking pasta or any Italian dish, I roll up two or three leaves of basil before cutting them crosswise. I finely chop onions and garlic when I am cooking mince pies or mutton curry. Cutting vegetables is an art and I love every bit of it. I am also very fond of fresh fruit and salads. As my girlfriend Prema and I are health conscious, coming up with different salads with unusual dressing that are calorie free is a big challenge. My partner was amazed when I made her a Caesar’s salad for the first time. I had to tell her the list of ingredients to convince her that it was not ordered from a restaurant. Now she pesters me all the time for a fresh fruit or an exotic salad. I keep the dressing light for salads. I usually procure it from the nearby grocery stores or, if time permits, I concoct it at home with olive oil, avocado, walnut and pepper with a dash of salt. Jeet’s secret weapon: Roll basil leaves before cutting them crosswise. barnalee.handique@ goldensparrow.com

wenty-three-year-old Anvaya Joshi has just one complaint. Whenever she logs on to Facebook, she sees posts of her batchmates getting engaged or married. “It is frustrating to see them tying the knot so early in life,” says the Kalyaninagar resident. “I mean, here you are not knowing what you’re going to do the very next day and your peers are already settling down. Isn’t 23 too young to get married? Or is it just me who finds this absolutely absurd?” Even in the second decade of the new century, girls in their early 20s are under pressure to get married. However, the strange part is that this pressure is no longer from their parents or society but a subtle effect of their friends settling down. As a commercial artist, Anvaya puts it, “Peer pressures like smoking,

drinking and partying are passé. Now the peer pressure is to get married. I know it sounds ridiculous. At 23, one is too young to grasp the concept of marriage. I think Marriage not they are more excited about on their radar their wedding day than what lies ahead. It is more about, “Oh I’m going to have a fancy wedding and my pretty bridal profile picture is going to get more than 100 likes!’” It’s not only now that women are expected to get married early, but it is new that some women are talking about what it is a defining factor for them. “Earlier, it was a defining factor but today, whether you’re married or not comes up much later in a conversation,” says 26-year-old Priyanka Subramanian. “It comes after questions
One prime reason is the feeling of loneliness when everyone else in your group is engaged/married. And dating gets more difficult as you get older —Salma Prabhu
Salma Prabhu, Clinical Psychologist and Life Coach I come across many young singles who prefer to remain single, but are in a constant conflict with their friends who have married early either due to parental pressure or after falling in love. They envy the singles but also urge them into tying the knot. One prime reason is the feeling of loneliness when everyone else in your group is engaged/married. And dating gets more difficult as you get older. Your married friends
are immersed in their children/spouses and have no time to spend with you. You are missing on the joys of parenthood, of having children who depend on you for everything. Your own parents think you as a misfit and are worried about you and your future. Girls face more pressure than boys to get married. And remaining single though one may be happy enough, will get more and more difficult.
How to face the peer pressure
1
4
2
5
If the single has decided to remain so then instead of justifying must remain calm and stick to his/her decision.
S/he can attend all the weddings if he wishes to and and go back home that evening and look at himself and say and he is happy this way.
3
S/he definitely has a strong reason to remain so and maybe have not kept it as a permanent situation. One may have decided to take their time, till they find their true soul mate or they are happy with their current status.
One must always be firm and face it all with a smile. Giving justifications and explanations lead to more pressure. Telling others of how miserable they are because they are married is also a no-no. Respect their marital status and ask them to respect yours. If they ask for reasons, you may tell if you wish to or just firmly say it is a choice.
6
If one is really fond of children, one may go and play with friend’s children and when pitied that you shall go back to an empty home, face this with a calm smile.
7
One may also be studying for PhD or wanting to have an appropriate career and income before getting married. Get your goals, priorities and timelines set and remain firm. After all no one can force you if you are firm with your decisions. If they have decided to get married early does not mean that it applies to the entire friend circle. You can say that you have your timelines set and goals and priorities in place and shall get married at the scheduled time. You may have to face the pressures like see it is nice to get married early as finding a good partner is easier.
such as, What do you do? Where do you see your career going? And so on. I believe these things are far more important. They define you more than anything else today.” Priyanka continues, “I have worked for most of my life for what I’ve achieved and I can’t just throw it all away for marriage. It is not like marriage is not on my radar, but it is not something that is going to dictate my life. I don’t want to rush into it. If it has to happen, it will.” As an educator, Priyanka is well aware of the costs involved in raising a child. “Raising a child costs ridiculous amounts of money,” says the Chinchwad resident. “Parents scavenge to meet their child’s requirements, due to which they don’t get enough time to spend with each other. What’s the point of all this? To lead a stressful life? You get married at a young age, become parents soon and then spend the rest of your lives struggling to make ends meet.” Priyanka is aware of the biological factor and its argument for having children when young. “I have decided to adopt, so the biological argument is also out of the picture. This gives me time to make my choices,” she says Priyanka is not the only one with such opinions. Samyukta Venkatesan also comes from a similar school of thought. “I haven’t figured myself out yet,” says the 24-year-old literature student, who is pursuing a Master’s degree. “If I’m not stable, don’t have a house of my own or enough savings to fall back on, how can I get into something where I am responsible and accountable for someone else?” Urvi Malvania vouches for this thought process. The 26-year-old media professional is the only one in her group yet to tie the knot and is troubled by the changes taking place in her friends’ lives. “Everyone around me is either engaged or married, with children,” she says.“This means every outing planned is with couples or children. I am thanking my stars now. I am happily single and don’t think I am ready for marriage yet. I am not scared of a relationship but just want to enjoy my life, spend my salary, live on the couch and not clean up my room. I obviously want a secure life and will get married at 35.” Priyanka believes that the younger the girl is when she gets married, more are the chances of her completely losing touch with herself and what she wants. “I think most girls get married young because they haven’t developed their identity,” she says. “When you invest in yourself, you will not want marriage to take it away from you. That is essentially what is happening to me. I don’t want marriage to take away my identity. When young people are getting married, they don’t understand what they are losing out on.” Financial independence, exploration or self-actualisation, the reasons to not get married could be many, but one thing is common among these singles — they know what they want. And how many of this age group can say that without hesitation? ishani.bose@goldensparrow.com (Inputs by Anjali Shetty)

he snow-capped mountains looked alluring from the distance. Especially when the morning sun rays-kissed the mountain tops, basking the vast plains and the entire landscape in a golden glow. Grey clouds loomed in the distance, shrouding pur view of the mountain peaks. We were in Ladakh and the rest of the world seemed far away. The journey from Manali to Leh was breathtaking and unfolded many surprises. The plan was to stop for the night at Sarchu which was 13,000 feet above sea level and proceed to Rohtang Pass the next day. As the car crawled up the serpentine road, we passed a number of streams, trees laden with apples and wild flowers peeking out of crevices of rocks layered with moss. The thick mist rolling down the mountains curled through the trees and enveloped the entire terrain.

The serene Pongong lake that is calm and relaxing
The journey beyond Rohtang was in almost complete silence. The road was partly concrete and the only sound we could hear was the wind rustling through the tree tops and the rumble of tyres as cars passed by. Very soon, the green valleys and mountains were replaced by smears of brown and rust, with snowy peaks in the background. Driving along the meandering Bhaga river, we crossed Thandi and Jispa villages and began our ascent towards Baralach La, which is at an altitude of 16,500 feet. The roadside was dotted with white Chortems (Buddhist temples) and prayer wheels. We stopped to take pictures of the beautiful Chortems. The journey transported us to a different world. When we reached the picture postcard Leh, the village resembled a sparkling jewel in the snow. En route to Leh, we stopped at the Stok palace on the Leh– Manali road. From here, we could see the tallest peak in the Ladakh range, Stok Kongri. We passes Buddhist centres of learning called ‘gompas’. We processed towards
