DIVISION 14 Arthur L. Johnson High School Edison High School Elizabeth High School John F. Kennedy Memorial High School John P. Stevens High School Westfield High School Rahway High School Dear Division 14, Welcome back to the school year! As you all gear up to start a magnificent year here are some things to keep in mind. 1) Remember to have a freshman orientation. Freshmen are key! As they start High School they will want to join clubs and organizations to make friends and form memories. That’s where you should all be pamphlets in hand welcoming them to the K-Family. 2) PROMOTE Fall Rally!!! This is the largest gathering of Key Clubbers in the state. We expect to have nearly 3,000 attendees this year. 3) Please remember to make “D14” posters/banners to bring to Fall Rally to cheer for our division! 4) Keep up with your News Letter Deadlines! Remember all 8 Editions must be published before March 27. Within the next couple of months I will be conducting club visits. I look forward to seeing you all and meeting your general members. Governor’s Blog NJ District Governor Josie Suddeth Published by Josie on August 31st, 2015.

Hello NJ Key Clubbers!

I hope you all have had awesome summers! School is right around the corner and that means Key Club is in the full swing of things again! Yay! In this blog post, you will find what has been happening in NJ Key Club and some important updates as we head back to school! Back to School is an exciting time in the Key Club year! You have the opportunity to recruit lots of new members, have new projects, attend exciting district events and more! While recruiting members, inspire potential members with the same enthusiasm that keeps you involved! Do things that will bring students to your meetings like food, a cool mini service project and then impress them with what Key Club is all about to keep them coming! The Back to School Mailing was released in mid-August. A virtual copy was sent to all officers by August 29th and every school was mailed a physical copy which your school should receive soon. This mailing has lots of important information for upcoming events. Some really important files include Fall Rally Registration and RTC info. Please be sure to read through it thoroughly! Key Club Welcome Guide was sent to all club officers this month. This has a lot of useful info regarding district happenings and resources you can use for recruiting. I highly encourage you all to utilize this resource! At our August Board Meeting, we decided what our district event for our district project will be! This year, we will be hosting Spike Out Hunger Volleyball Tournaments to benefit the NJ Federation of Food Banks. Bi-division volleyball tournaments will be held and the winner of each tournament will move onto the district tournament! Have fun while helping our district project! Your LTG will be holding this tournament before the end of November. More details will be available via your LTG. Please contact him or her with any questions! The NJ District is welcoming a new board member. Farwa Shakeel will be the District Secretary for the duration of the 2015-2016 service year. Farwa is a rising senior at Piscataway High School in division 11. She is the IP LTG of Division 11, a Robert F. Lucas Outstanding Lieutenant Governor’s Award recipient, past DPS Co-Chair, past Scholarships Committee chair, past Distinguished Club President of Piscataway High School and more! Regional Training Conferences are right around the corner! Regional Training Conferences, also called RTC’s, are hosted each year to train general members, officers and advisors alike to become more effective leaders and servers of their home, school, and community. Through four individual sessions that include several workshops to choose from, Key Clubbers learn important aspects of their roles in the club. RTC’s hold informative workshops on district events, service and fundraising ideas, public speaking, and ways to get more involved with Key Club. All NJ Key Clubbers are encouraged to attend. Each officer must attend at least one Regional Training Conference in order to be recognized as a distinguished officer at District Convention. There will be an RTC on September 12th at West Deptford High School, September 13th at Phillipsburg High School, and September 19th at Millburn High School.

Fall Rally is the largest gathering of NJ Key Clubbers at Six Flags Great Adventure to kick off a new school year of service! This year’s theme is “Oh the Service You’ll Do!”! Admission includes a fun and informative session, early admission to the park, and fright fest! Learn more about what is going on in Key Club while having fun! How much does it cost to get into this awesome event? Season pass holders can get in for $7 regardless of when you sign up. If your club does early registration, the cost is $37 per member. Late registration is $41 per member. It is sure to be a very fun day! Please contact your LTG with any questions! Please contact me or your LTG with any questions! Inspire your awesome schools with the same Key Club spirit you have through PR, events and cool meetings and you are sure to be successful. NJ Key Club has a lot of exciting happenings going on in the upcoming months. RTCs, Fall Rally, and Spike Out Hunger are all coming to you all! Please be sure to contact me and Stephania with any questions and I look forward to seeing you all at upcoming district events!

Club Feature “ Project Span ” Edison High School The Edison High School Key Club is conducting a school supplies drive this summer to help the local community service project, Project Span. Project Span, a unique mentoring program bridging the gap between families and community, targets at-risk families referred by the Division of Child Protection & Permanency as abusive and/or neglectful. The program is run by the vice president of the local Kiwanis Club, and provides mentors and support to these families. Each year the club “adopts” one of these families during the holiday season to help them throughout the year. The Kiwanis Club has asked the Edison High Key Club to aid the program by supporting

children in the program with school supplies for back to school needs. The Key Club officers have collected several supplies such as notebooks, pencils, pens, and glue sticks already and are looking for backpack donations as well. In the future, we are planning to conduct a toy drive and collect other items through the year to help these families in need. We hope to see all these young kids succeed this school year equipped with their backpacks full of supplies! “Small donations make large differences in the community!”

Club Officer Spotlight Club Secretary Martha Julemis Elizabeth High School

Club Secretary Martha

Julemis has done

an amazing job since she took office. She is one of the youngest officers in our division but one of the best secretaries. Not only has she always handed in all paperwork on time, but has never failed to contact me with any questions she might have. And for the last couple of weeks she has taken the daunting task of temporarily working two officer positions. I could not be any more proud of this club’s secretary. The club is very lucky to have her.

Keep Up the great work

Martha!

Key Club Dues What are Dues? Each year, both returning and new Key Club members must pay their dues in order to be an official member. But why do you need to pay dues, and where does the money go? Because Key Club is an international organization, the payment ensures membership not only at the club level, but at an international level. Key Club International man-dates that every member pay $7.00 in addition to dues set by their respective district. These $7.00 are used for International scholarships and funding for the Youth Opportunities Fund, or YOF. The YOF is a grant given to clubs who plan on completing a project and need money in order to do so. In New Jersey, each member must pay an additional $5.50. This money is used for

district-level scholarships and used to fund events such as District Convention and RTC’s. The New Jersey District also allows each club in the district to charge an additional $5 on top of mandated dues to nourish their club treasury. This money can be used for completing projects, paying for pizza, funding for District Convention, or however the club sees necessary. Dues are vital in the proper functioning of both our district and our international organization. Make sure to pay your dues this service year!

Early Bird Award: Every year at District Convention, the New Jersey District of Key Club awards clubs the Early Bird Award for handing in their dues before November 1st. To win this award your club must have at least 15 dues paid members registered to the district. However even if dues are sent to the district before November 1st, the club may still continue to

accept dues through the year.

If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me.

Imagine a weekend in the woods with about 65 Key Clubbers learning about service leadership and having fun while doing it – that is exactly what Key Leader is! This year, from December 4thDecember 6th, Kiwanis is sponsoring their annual Key Leader in Camp Cross Roads in Port Murray, NJ! As mentioned, about 65 students join together for a weekend to learn about what it means to be a leader. From ropes courses to informative workshops, Key Leader is an overall amazing experience! At Key Leader you are able to meet teens from all over New Jersey who share a passion for service just like you! The friendships and bonds you form at Key Leader are incredible. The great thing is that not just Key Clubbers attend – students not in Key Club as well as 8th Graders can join in on the fun! If a student has attended a Key Leader prior to this year, they are able to sign up as a Student Facilitator. At Key Leader, students break off into groups called “neighborhoods” and Student Facilitators are in charge of neighborhoods. The neighborhood will have to create their own mascots, posters, and will be taking part in team building activities together. The Student Facilitators will get a discounted price of about $115 of what would be $200 for non Key Clubbers and $175 for Key Clubbers. The money goes towards food, lodging and activities throughout the weekend. It is truly a life changing experience, and you get to meet so many amazing people! If you have any questions about Key Leader, feel free to contact me or our Key Leader subcommittee chair, Josh Mariscal at ltg18.mariscal@gmail.com. I hope to see you there!
