Governor Blog Post NJ District Governor Josie Suddeth

Hello New Jersey Key Clubbers!

I hope you all have been having an awesome week! Whether you have been stressing with college apps, school or sports, I hope you all have felt better with each service hour you’ve earned! The N.J. District just had our huge Fall Rally and has some important events coming up soon! Fall Rally was a big success! It was wonderful to see around 2,200 of you there ready to learn about what is going on in Key Club! All attendees attended a fun and informative session, cheered their heads off and listened attentively! Shout out to Division 8 for winning the spirit stick! I am very sad that this was my last Fall Rally. I highly encourage you all to attend Fall Rally next year! Our District Project this year is The NJ Federation of Food Banks. The Federation works towards feeding the many food deprived people in our state. Please make sure you fill out the google form whenever you donate and record all service hours, donations and funds for the District Project correctly on the CMRF. It is extremely pertinent that you all do this so we can keep track of our district goals! As a clarification, if you give food directly to a food pantry, like if your school has a food pantry in it like mine, this still counts towards the goal and should still be recorded the same. Spike Out Hunger volleyball divisional tournaments are coming up super soon!!!! Please attend your divisional tournaments!!! You can play volleyball, eat food, and have fun while donating to a cause that feeds struggling people! This is the definition of a win-win situation! Why would you not want to go? Please contact your LTG so you can register you and your team ahead of time. Please contact me or your LTG with any questions! Hunger Awareness Week is also happening from November 9th-13th! Participate in the daily tasks to spread awareness about our District Project! Monday is paper sales! Print out paper cut outs and sell them for $1 each! Tuesday is $2 Tuesday! You can only spend $2 for lunch in school. Wear orange, the Student’s Change Hunger color, on Wednesday! Thursday is Informative Day! Hand out flyers out the Federation and Students Change Hunger during lunch! Friday is #Foodbank Friday –take photos and post with this hashtag to spread awareness for our district project! Key Leader is an amazing experience! I have been twice and have taken key different lessons out of both experiences. At Key Leader, attendees learn about leadership techniques, team building and more all while having fun! I strongly encourage you all to attend. This year Key Leader is from December 4th-6th at Camp Cross Roads in Port Murray, NJ. The cost is $200, but if you sign up before November 21st, you get $25 off! Go to http://key-leader.org/ to sign up. NJ Key Leader registration is in the left column. Please contact me with any questions!

Yours in Caring and Service,

Josie Suddeth New Jersey District Governor

District Secretary Blog Post NJ District Secretary Farwa Shakeel

Salutations, New Jersey District Secretaries! The next few months will be busy ones for the New Jersey District! Here are some things the New Jersey District Board would look you all to keep in mind:  100%

CMRF Award: To be eligible for the 100% CMRF Award, you must submit ALL

CMRFs by November 10th, including the October CMRF. You are allowed to submit any missed CMRFs by this date as well. Feel free to contact your Lieutenant Governor or myself with any questions about this award.  Check out the Fall Rally board meeting summary!  Begin compiling a folder (if you have not already done so,) of all CMRFs, whether electronically or physically. A copy of a fillable Annual Achievement Report Form (AARF) will be included in the December Mailing; if all your CMRFs are in one place, it will be much easier to fill out the AARF and to get it done early! Please feel free to contact me with any questions!

Yours in Caring and Service, Farwa Shakeel

Club Feature “ Blue Devils Go Green “ Westfield High School

This year the Westfield High School Key Club will be taking charge of the recycling program at the school. In the last few years the recycling system at WHS has fallen apart and most students believed nothing was being recycled at all. A Key Club member revamped the program as her Gold Award by identifying what was causing the issues and then taking action. New bins were purchased and distributed along with signs explaining what could and could not be recycled. Key Club is taking on the task of keeping the program going and spreading the word to students. Every month the Key Club will read a fact about recycling on the morning announcements to remind students about the difference they can make. In addition Key Club members will be in charge of replacing any missing signs or bins throughout the school. Working as a Club will help make sure the program stays alive and help WHS reduce its trash stream to help the environment. This community service the Club is taking on is something very important but also very simple! What makes the project great is that it has created a lasting solution to a problem instead of quick fix. Could your Club help improve the recycling system at your high school?

Prematurity Awareness Day November 17th, 2015 Elizabeth High School (Upper & Lower Academies)

To raise prematurity awareness, division 14’s Elizabeth High School helped me carry out a large fundraiser to benefit the March of Dimes Foundation. By selling March of Dimes Bracelets at the two academies, Division 14 raised $1,422 towards our year long divisional project for MOD. Thank you Elizabeth High School Key Club for your immense role in this fundraiser. Especially to its Club Secretary Martha Julemis who sold well over 40 bracelets. We are now at $1,500.88 for our year long divisional project.

Outside Organizations

Toys For Tots

In 1947, Major Bill Hendricks of the United States Marine Corps Reserves founded

Toys for Tots in Los Angeles, California, as 5,000 toys were collected during a campaign before Christmas of 1947. In 1948, the United States Marine Corps Reserves officially adopts Toys for Tots and the program begins to publicize as Walt Disney creates the now famous train logo for Toys for Tots. Today, the main mission for Toys for Tots is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November, and December each year. These toys are distributed as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community. This toy is not just a material object, yet it is symbolic of a message to young children that there is hope, and the United States Marine Corps Reserves hopes this message of hope will transform into the children becoming more responsible, productive, patriotic citizens. To get involved with Toys for Tots, you can obviously donate a toy at one of the toy drop off locations in your area. Toys for Tots requests that the toys be new and unwrapped. Remember, it does not have to be something extravagant, most people I just happy to receive anything! Also, if you would prefer to just do service, there will be

plenty of opportunities. You can host a Toys for Tots event at your office or other venue to actually collect the toys, or you could volunteer at your local warehouse. To see where your local Toys for Tots is, click on “Donate a Toy on toysfortots.org, and from there select New Jersey, and then your county. Happy Holidays!!!
