INTRODUCTION The Bible is the greatest earthly treasure that God has ever entrusted to his people. The psalmist praised the revelation given to Moses as “reviving the soul,” “rejoicing the heart,” and “more to be desired . . . than gold” (Ps. 19:7–10). The purpose of this edition of the ESV Bible is to present the Scripture in a way that reflects the unspeakable preciousness and beauty of the Scripture itself. The English Standard Version Bible stands in the classic stream of English Bible translation that goes back to the venerable King James Bible of 1611. The King James Bible translators wrote that “God’s sacred Word . . . is that inestimable treasure, which excelleth all the riches of the earth.” It is in solidarity with that conviction that Crossway is pleased to present to the church the ESV Reader’s Bible, Six-Volume Set. This edition of the Bible has been created in an effort not only to reflect the riches of the Bible itself but also to facilitate smoothness of reading. Chapter and verse numbers, footnotes,* and headings have all been removed, with just a limited number of section headings provided to help guide reading. The result is the text of Scripture presented in a way much closer to the original manuscripts. will find the seamless presentation of the text conducive to reading large portions of the Bible at a time. This is similar to what we find in the Bible itself. Ezra read the Scripture to the people from early morning until midday (Neh. 8:3). Paul’s epistles were read aloud from start to finish. There is a time for analyzing the biblical text word by word and verse by verse in a concentrated way. Most modern Bibles are effective for such Bible study. But there is also a time for immersing ourselves in the sweep of the storyline in a way that most modern editions of the Bible can inhibit. The uncluttered elegance of the ESV Reader’s Bible, Six-Volume Set is intended to encourage such reading. May the Lord himself draw near to you as you spend time in his Word.

n the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him? But you have dishonored the poor man. Are not the rich the ones who oppress you, and the ones who drag you into court? Are they not the ones who blaspheme the honorable name by which you were called? If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well. But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it. For he who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?
