Spring & Easter 2022

A season full of hope

F

or many people, spring is a season full of hope and expectation, and for none more so than Christians as we approach Easter. As Rico Tice says in the introduction to Hope Explored, a new three-week outreach course from Christianity Explored Ministries:

“Christianity is about real hope: a joyful expectation for the future, based on true events in the past, which changes everything about my present.” This catalogue is full of resources which we trust will help you and your family reflect on that glorious hope and share it with those around you. Yours in Christ,

Meditations on the sacrificial love of Jesus NEW

Thirty short but profound reflections that help you to meditate on and marvel at the sacrificial love of Jesus. This book also works fantastically as a devotional, especially during Lent and Easter. David Mathis | £8.99 £7.64

“His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems.” (Revelation 19:12) Admiration may be the highest of pleasures, and particularly when we marvel at the life, death, and triumph of Jesus. The treasures of who he is, what he has done, and what he will do are countless. We were made for this: not just to trust and obey

God, but to know him, and enjoy him, in Jesus. The joys of knowing Jesus are unsurpassed even now—and they will endure, and only deepen and develop, for all eternity to come. This Jesus is a king unlike any other. Mere

human monarchs and dignitaries have their strengths and weaknesses, their fortes and flaws, the particular glories for which they are remembered and the inevitable missteps they wish to be forgotten. Yet the man Christ Jesus—not

only truly human but also truly God—eclipses and far surpasses every other human ruler and celebrity. He is worthy of more than a single crown. As King of kings, and Lord of lords, and Glory of glories, he is worthy of many crowns. Because of how it helps me admire and marvel at Jesus, one of my favorite hymns has long been “Crown Him with Many Crowns” (Matthew Bridges, 1851). I love how the hymn’s stanzas celebrate Christ, in turn, as Lord of love, Lord of life, Lord of light, Lord of heaven, Lord of years, and Lord of lords. Even as phrase after phrase tells of his glory, the one that has arrested me most over the years is “rich wounds.” Rich wounds captures so well the strangeness and beauty—the peculiar glory—of Jesus Christ and his self-sacrifice at the cross for sinners. Jesus was wounded for us: pierced for our

“Crown him the Lord of love! Behold his hands and side— Rich wounds, yet visible above, In beauty glorified.” transgressions, crushed for our iniquities. “Upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5). Jesus bore our griefs, our sorrows, our transgressions, our iniquities; he brought us peace; he healed us.

many crowns, the many wonders and excellencies of Jesus Christ. Ponder with me his life and ministry, his sacrificial death, his spectacular resurrection, and that one fateful week that was the worst and most wonderful in the history of the world.

His wounds, horrific as they were when inflicted on the innocent Son of God, are indeed rich wounds, because he is God, and made us rich in becoming poor for us (2 Corinthians 8:9). They are wounds rich in meaning and significance: wounds that have not vanished on his resurrected body. I love meditating on the many glories, the

NEW Using the story of Joseph and his brothers as a model, this book explores what repentance, forgiveness and reconciliation can look like, even in extremely difficult circumstances. It will help readers to forgive, find peace and move forward, even when it’s hard. Wendy Alsup | £8.99 £7.64

Forgiving even when it hurts I forgive you These are simple words, but hard ones. Perhaps they are words you just can’t bring yourself to say. Has someone harmed you so deeply you cannot imagine releasing them of their debt to you? Or perhaps these are words you long to hear. Have you harmed a loved one? Does restoring 18 |

the relationship seem impossible? Many of us have harmed or been harmed in our marriages. Many of us have harmed or been harmed by our parents or siblings. Many of us have harmed or been harmed through racial insensitivity or downright hostility in our communities. Many of us have harmed or

Go to thegoodbook.co.uk/iforgive

been harmed through church conflict. Or conflict at work. Or a thousand other possible scenarios. Do words of forgiveness—and the reconciliation that may potentially follow—feel far out of your reach? What would you say if I told you that forgiveness is not out of your reach—that we have a God who loves

reconciliation, a Savior who came into the world to reconcile us to himself, and a Spirit who works change and healing among us? That there is hope— even for you? It’s true: there will always be aspects of reconciliation that are out of your control. You can confess your sin to the one you harmed, but you cannot guarantee they will respond with forgiveness. You can forgive the one who has harmed you, but that does not mean they will fully recognize the wrong they have done or repair in the ways that are right. Though you can release them from the place they hold in your mind, a fully reconciled relationship is not always possible. So what hope is there? This book is also not a straightforward, stepby-step manual on how to reach reconciliation with another. Though we will go through

various aspects of a process of sorts, we will find that this process is messy, with any number of complicating factors that can suddenly turn progress aside. There is no tidy linear path to reconciliation. This book looks at the Bible to find hope for our broken relationships and insight for how to pursue forgiveness and healing—which are both possible, even where full reconciliation is not. Specifically, we will look at the life of Joseph in the book of Genesis. I can think of no better story to give us practical insight for our own complicated, messy situations. In the story of Joseph, his father, and his brothers, God gives a vision of what is possible when all seems lost, when reconciliation seems impossible, and when those we love are far off, seemingly out of

our reach. The story of Joseph gives us hope, too, when we are overwhelmed with guilt for the harm we have done against our loved ones. I have experienced many kinds of conflicts and brokenness in my life. Some have seen resolution. Some haven’t, yet. Wherever you are in your own journey from brokenness to healing, this book is designed to encourage you to persevere in hope. God is for you. He sees you, and he has a good plan for your life. If you long to move forward but it seems impossible, know that God has not left you as an orphan to navigate this situation by yourself. There is help and hope to persevere.

Philosophical problems facing transgenderism 1|T he transgender movement is incoherent The transgender movement relies upon the assumption that someone’s biological sex and gender expression are distinct, unrelated categories, with the result that a biological male who “feels” female can live out a gender expression at odds with the gender norms associated with their biological sex. In this framework, “gender” as an emotional and psychological category, is altogether distinct from a biological reality. But if you follow the arguments of transgender activists, they’ll argue that gender is 22 |

simultaneously innate and waiting to be discovered, that it exists on a spectrum, and that it is socially constructed. Did you follow that? Something that is innate and supposedly “real” can be socially constructed. That is not philosophically sensible. How can something that is socially constructed also be the product of an innate experience? The very idea of a social construct obliterates the idea of stable, innate categories. If gender exists on a spectrum and multiple gender expressions can reside in a single individual, how can such variance in expression be innate? At best, a transgender activist

Go to thegoodbook.co.uk/transgender-debate

could argue that gender is socially constructed and exists on a spectrum, but then that calls into question the concrete existence of “gender” as a psychological reality. The whole ideological foundation of transgenderism is built on confusing, inconsistent, and contradictory grounds. 2 | The transgender movement is incompatible with other progressive ideologies Feminism and gay rights are central fixtures in progressive thought. But feminism and gay rights have something

in common with each other that transgenderism does not. For feminism to make sense, there has to be an objective and real feminine category. In other words, feminism (that seeks to celebrate and empower women) means that womanhood must truly exist. The same goes for homosexuality. Homosexuality entails the idea that a biological man is sexually attracted to another biological man, or that a biological woman is sexually attracted to another biological woman. But transgenderism denies that sex is either objective or authoritative. What does this mean? It obliterates feminism and homosexuality as stable categories. If individuals can transition between genders, it means that a man could be a woman or a man who is attracted to other men could become a woman. I do not believe homosexuality is compatible with biblical sexual ethics, but it would seem to me that homosexuals and feminists who champion these identities would see transgenderism as undermining the concrete existence of these categories on which those identities rely. All of this is why real-world feminists and some gay voices in popular culture are speaking out: LGB has

little in common with “T” aside from relying upon each other in the broader pursuit of identity politics. 3 | The transgender movement undermines womanhood and motherhood A few years ago, the Dove Soap company aired a commercial for Mother’s Day on YouTube that profiled several different mothers. The commercial was designed to applaud motherhood, which is commendable. But one of the “mothers” profiled was very obviously a male, bedecked with long hair and feminine clothing. The man called himself a “mom” and said there is “no one right way to do it all,” by which he meant “motherhood comes in a variety of forms.” The commercial very much reflects the spirit of the age, obsessed by progressive definitions of “pluralism,” “tolerance,” and “equity” as the highest possible goals our society can achieve. But when these ideals run amok in perverse form, they accomplish the exact opposite. Underneath the very tolerant and polite message that Dove Soap was intending to communicate is a deeply subversive and insulting message: motherhood does not exist apart

from gender and cultural stereotypes. If motherhood is not tied to the exclusive bodily realities that define womanhood (such as carrying a child and nursing a child), then motherhood does not objectively exist. It is for each individual to decide what it is. This is actually profoundly insulting and undermines true femininity and motherhood. If men can “be” mothers, too, then motherhood does not exist. Yet again this is an example of the postmodern contradictions behind much of progressive thought: in the attempt to appear as tolerant and affirming as possible, it refuses to tolerate and affirm authentic motherhood, which is an embodied reality that follows from the way that female bodies have been designed by God in creation.

NEW

Gives you tools and strategies to read and understand the Bible for yourself, helping you move from confusion to confidence as you enjoy refreshment in God’s word. Perfect for new believers or anyone who wants to get into a habit of regular Bible reading. Gary Millar | £7.99 £6.79 Ministry Pack | 5 for £25 with code RTFPACK

Help to read the Bible for yourself I am absolutely convinced that every single person who is reading this already has the skills necessary to read and understand the Bible. Why am I so sure? Let me give you a oneword answer: Netflix. (Or any other streaming service!) Watching a movie or box set actually requires a very sophisticated set of skills to make sense 26 |

of what’s going on. And it all starts as we simply watch and listen carefully. Understand the characters As the characters are introduced, we instinctively look out for the hints and cues that the writer gives us to answer a whole pile of questions: When and where is all this happening? Is

Go to thegoodbook.co.uk/readthis

this person “good” or “bad”? Can they be trusted? Are they up to something? Are they hiding anything? What’s their relationship with the other characters? Is something terrible about to happen to this person? (The scary music usually gives that one away!) Is this person central to the plot or a bit-part player? And so it goes on. You probably don’t say any of this

out loud (although some members of my family do!). Nor do you ask all those questions consciously. But it’s all going on in your head. Ask questions and look for answers Of course, not all these questions are answered at the start or all at once. If we want to find out the answers, we just have to keep watching—at least to the next episode. Sometimes, we have to stick with it for a while to get a sense of what’s going on. But we know that if we give it time, everything will start to become clear. It’s as we keep watching that we sort out in our heads what’s important and what isn’t. As the story unfolds, the writer tells us who really matters and who doesn’t— who are the main characters and who play the supporting roles. Gradually, we work out which details are just incidental and which are crucial to the story. And,

of course, we do all that instinctively. Wait for it to come together The same thing goes for putting it all together at the end. At the end of the movie or series, suddenly all the pieces fall into place (or enough of them to come to a satisfactory conclusion, while leaving enough loose ends to justify another season!). We say to ourselves, or to whoever else is in the room, things like “Ahhh—that’s why he said that to her then. It all makes sense now.” Trust your instincts So there really is a lot going on as we watch Netflix—it’s just that most of it is instinct. In a similar way, when it comes to reading the Bible, our greatest need is to read what it says on the page and trust our instincts. God has spoken to us in words, sentences and paragraphs, and we can

handle all of those. So we simply read and keep reading, and eventually it will all come together. Is it really that simple? Yes, it is! Read the words. If you don’t know the words or aren’t quite sure of what the writer is getting at, then keep reading. As with any good box set, if we keep going, the Bible itself will tell us what’s important. Look at the whole sentence and try to make sense of that, and then just keep going, trying to make sense of the whole paragraph, and then just keep going! IDEAL TO GIVE NEW BELIEVERS
