ELCOME TO THE COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE. Stretching from
the outskirts of Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington, at its western end to Biggs and Maryhill in the east, this 85-mile region where the Columbia River flows through the Cascade Mountains between Oregon and Washington is one of the most visually stunning
places on earth. In this relatively small area lies a staggering range of geography and landscapes, from moss-laden rainforests to lush farming valleys to arid high desert. The snow-capped peaks of Mount Adams and Mount Hood rise breathtakingly to the north and south, feeding a network of tumbling streams and rivers—and waterfalls—that flow eventually into the Columbia. The Columbia Gorge is a mecca for outdoor recreation, renowned for its windsurfing and
kiteboarding, stand-up paddling, mountain and road biking, kayaking, rafting, fishing and hiking. It’s also a burgeoning wine region, where three-dozen varieties of grapes grow in a 40-mile stretch that’s home to more than 30 wineries. The craft beer movement is thriving, and the farm-to-table ethos permeates everything from roadside fruit stands to quirky food carts and sophisticated restaurants.
It’s little wonder, then, that the Columbia Gorge is a premier destination wedding location.
Couples can make their wedding not only a celebration of their nuptials but a memorable vacation for themselves and their guests. The variety of wedding venues available throughout the Gorge makes it possible for couples to find exactly what they’re looking for, and the quality of vendors throughout the wedding industry here is unsurpassed. In Destination Weddings/Columbia River Gorge, we’ve highlighted a few of the diverse ven-
ues around the Gorge by staging photo shoots at them. For each one, Gorge wedding vendors (and a few from the Portland-Vancouver area) did what they do best, working tirelessly and collaboratively to create the perfect setting. We’ve also included stories of some real weddings from around the Gorge as well as other helpful resources. We hope you enjoy this visual feast. May you find inspiration here as you plan your own
destination wedding in the Columbia River Gorge. Janet Cook, editor

Something with lots of layers with lace, beading and corseting can be much more forgiving than a smooth satin. A lot of dresses are strapless and many also have low back lines so we sell a lot of the Nubra—a backless and strapless bra that sticks to your skin. It’s great because there is no worry of “back fat” and no straps to deal with. Wedding dresses are almost always custom fit and there can be a lot of support in the bodice, so sometimes a bra is not needed. Q: WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE TO WOMEN CHOOSING LINGERIE FOR THEIR WEDDING NIGHT AND HONEYMOON?
Q: HOW DOES FOUNDATION 45 CATER TO BRIDES AND WEDDING PARTIES? A: We do private parties, which are a really fun way to kick off a bachelorette party or shower. I always have wine in the shop for any of my shoppers but I will provide it for the private parties as well, or they are welcome to bring in their own. We love when brides bring in their dresses for a fitting, but since that can be a challenge we’re happy to work with brides and let them purchase a few different bra/undergarment options to take with them to their fitting and return anything that doesn’t work. We try to have good options for items to go under the dress in a wide range of sizing. We can also do special orders in most cases, but that takes time so getting in here well before the final fitting is recommended. We also do bridal registry. It makes gift giving much easier for the guests and the bride is sure to get things she knows she likes and can wear. Q: WHAT KINDS OF THINGS DO YOU CARRY BESIDES INTIMATES PIECES? A: Some of our best selling items are not intimates pieces at all. Sleepwear and pajamas are some of our top sellers. We also have really fun leg wear, hosiery, bath and body items and small accessories like sleep masks.
Q: WHAT SHOULD BE A BRIDE’S MOST IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS FOR UNDERGARMENTS ON HER WEDDING DAY? A: One important thing to consider is that white can show under white. Depending on the fabric used for the dress and the number of layers, sometimes the only option for under the dress is nude (boring!). I have lots of ladies who will buy the boring nude bra and underwear for under the dress and then purchase something much less boring to slip into later. It really helps to have a picture of the dress, preferably with the bride in it, so I can see how low the back is, how fitted the bodice is and how the straps lie. Also something to consider is that if your wedding is during a hot time of year, less is more. I have lots of brides who come in and want a corset, but if your wedding is outside in August, it can be really hot. It happens a lot that the under-things under a dress are not very cute, but it is all about function so a bride can look amazing on her big day. Q: ARE THERE CERTAIN STYLES OR FABRICS THAT ARE BEST UNDER A WEDDING DRESS?
A: Most important is that she feels sexy and beautiful in it. Confidence is the most appealing quality anyone can have; women behave totally differently when they are in an item that makes them feel good versus something that makes them uncomfortable or that they feel highlights the parts they don’t like. Find something that fits well and you like. It doesn’t have to have 12 pieces and take 30 minutes to get into. Unless you are an experienced lingerie addict then keep it simple, especially for the wedding night. Couples are exhausted and the last thing you need is a team to come help you get into your prancing outfit. The honeymoon is a great opportunity to branch out and be more daring, if you feel like it. Nice items for the honeymoon are things like a pretty chemise or sleep slip, a pretty robe, a sassy bra-and-undie set or two. Q: ARE THERE ANY NEW TRENDS IN WEDDING UNDERGARMENTS? A: Weddings in general seem to have shifted from giant, over-the-top events to more intimate gatherings. I think under-things have followed that trend somewhat in that brides are tending to choose more simple, classic styles. But that could be more of a regional shift since we do live in such a casual area.
A: Usually the best fabrics are smooth and without much lace or embellishment. Again, it all depends on the fabrication of the dress.

WEDDING BOUQUET: LUCY'S INFORMAL FLOWERS
Q: HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT WORKING WITH A COUPLE TO DESIGN THEIR WEDDING FLOWERS? A: Today’s brides have at their fingertips so many places to find floral designs and inspiration. I ask brides to find photos that inspire them and share them with me. From there, I can design their wedding flowers and help with table scape, ceremony ideas and any other décor they need help with. I suggest to couples that they start with colors they like and we can go from there. I am always looking to help a couple with their vision of what they want. We offer full floral designs as well as rentals such as candles, props such as frames, fruit boxes, arches and more.
Q: WHAT RECOMMENDATIONS CAN YOU GIVE TO MAXIMIZE A COUPLE’S FLORAL BUDGET?
Q: WHAT CAN A COUPLE DO WITH BOUQUETS AND ARRANGEMENTS AFTER THEIR WEDDING IS OVER?
A: I break down the wedding into three parts: bridal party, ceremony and reception. In almost every case, the floral budget is approximately 8-10 percent of the total cost of the wedding. To me, the most important part of the budget for florals needs to be the bridal bouquet, as it is in every photo and holds such a tradition. It should be very special.
A: As most of our weddings are couples who are making this a destination, we try to recycle any flowers leftover by donating them to senior centers and nursing homes.
Q: DO YOU DO ARRANGEMENTS WITH LOCALLY AVAILABLE, SEASONAL FLOWERS? A: We strive to use flowers grown in the Pacific Northwest. We are lucky to have several local growers here in the Gorge. Being able to make designs from local sources is such a win-win. It’s farm to vase, if you will. My favorite designs come from whatever is growing at the time.
Q: WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT DESIGNING WEDDING FLORALS? A: My passion is designing florals that inspire and amaze. The look on a bride’s face when I present her bouquet is priceless. DINNERWARE AND FLATWARE: CLASSIC VINTAGE RENTALS. LINEN AND GLASS MOUSE: TWIGGS. BOUTONNIÈRE: LUCY'S INFORMAL FLOWERS.
Q: HOW FAR IN ADVANCE OF A WEDDING DO YOU CREATE THE BOUQUETS? A: We arrange wedding flowers anywhere from the day before to just hours before the wedding to ensure everything is very fresh.
Lucy Gorman began doing wedding floral design in the Gorge in 1994, and opened her own flower shop in Hood River, Lucy’s Informal Flowers, in 2005. She has done floral arrangements for more than 1,000 weddings. She can be reached at (541) 386-3666 or at informalflowers.com.

16 to 9 Months Think about the type of wedding you want. Formal or informal? Big or small? Decide what time of year you want your wedding to take place. Summer weddings are popular in the Columbia Gorge, but spring and fall are equally beautiful, and there are plenty of venues perfect for winter weddings. Create a budget. Hire a planner. This is even more important if you’re not from the area. Scout venues, if possible, and meet with vendors and/or your local wedding planner. Determine your wedding party. Settle on a head count. Choose a date. Remember, many venues in the Columbia Gorge get booked well in advance.
gowns can take months to make, and even if you’re buying off the rack, you’ll typically need three fittings. When buying, think about how you’ll transport the dress to your destination. Shop for the bridesmaids’ dresses. Allow at least six months for the gowns to be ordered and sized. Book a photographer. Wedding photographers in the Columbia Gorge are in high demand, especially during the summer months. The farther ahead of time you book your photographer, the better. Book a block of hotel rooms or rent accommodations for your wedding party and guests. Book your flight and accommodations. Hire a florist. Choose your menu and dessert. Book the entertainment.

Q: WHAT ARE THE IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS A CATERER SERVES, BESIDES MAKING THE FOOD? A: Good food is at the heart of any celebration. This is the simplest summary of the truth we have been living by for years. It speaks to the pivotal role a caterer plays in the entire unfolding of the wedding day. In most cases, as the catering team, we are the only vendor onsite for the entire day with a large staff that is ready to do the day’s bidding. As such, we tend to have a hand in all of the plans and much of the set-up and breakdown for the entire day. Q: CAN YOU WORK AT MOST GORGE WEDDING VENUES, AND WITH A COUPLE’S OTHER VENDORS? Q: WHAT SHOULD A COUPLE LOOK FOR IN A WEDDING CATERER? A: Catering is an element that threads itself throughout the life of a wedding reception. The right caterer should feel like a trusted partner, helping a couple attain their vision for the day with their local knowledge and connections, professional staff, years of experience and innovative cuisine. The right caterer should make you feel—throughout your planning process— like it is an honor to be chosen to be a part of your big day. The Columbia River Gorge is a spectacular place to host a wedding. The right caterer should offer you the opportunity to feature and accentuate your chosen setting with their strong ties to the community and the local environment. The right caterer should make you feel comfortable and empowered in your decision by backing up their promises with their experience in the industry and a secure infrastructure to support their efforts. Q: HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT SERVING LOCALLY SOURCED FOOD? A: I’m encouraged when I see the growing shift in the collective consciousness toward an interest in where the food we eat has come from, what has gone into its production and who is responsible for raising it and bringing it to the
table. For us at Celilo, the commitment to locally produced, sustainably harvested food is not just a trend, it is a way of life. Celilo was born out of a desire to seek out local farmers, fishers, ranchers, foragers, gardeners, winemakers and beer brewers and cultivate a community where they could be supported and thrive. This commitment to local, sustainable practice drives everything we do. Q: DO YOU PERSONALIZE MENUS, OR IS EVERYTHING PRE-SET? A: I try to strike a balance between offering structure and guidance and allowing room for each couple to express themselves and their vision. We have a brochure that presents three menu price points and offers several menu options to choose from within each. That allows the client feel like they are getting the personal service they deserve. This kind of flexibility has manifested in some very fun ways over the years. For one wedding, we served hundreds of slices of assorted pies, baked by the guests themselves, and presented on individual antique china plates collected by the bride and her family over the course of several years. Another bride had us cook her great aunt's recipe as a main entree. I love helping to bring the elements of the day together for each couple.
A: We can and will work just about anywhere! Every Gorge event site, whether a formal venue, a remote field in an orchard, or on a mountaintop, has so much to offer. I enjoy the challenges of figuring out how to operate in each setting so that we are efficient and are able to fully embellish a site’s natural appeal. Often, off-site catering comes with physical challenges and demands. I have a strong crew of healthy, overqualified, creative people who are ready to embrace the opportunity to explore new locations, be outdoors, think outside the box, and work hard all day. And yes, I am passionate about getting to know vendors and helping to create an environment where everyone is well positioned to do their best work. We make a lot of friends and have a lot of fun in the process. Q: WHAT ARE THE CURRENT TRENDS IN FOOD AT WEDDINGS? A: Our practice has been to commit to an ethic rather than a fad. We are committed to our community; we are committed to bringing our clients a stellar wedding experience; and we are committed to sourcing and serving the best food we can possibly find. Presently, our ethics are in line with what is trending right now, and that is great, but I can promise that we will continue to act in a way the supports our beliefs regardless of whether it is in fashion or not.

“We have known and loved Celilo Restaurant for years. Our choice of Celilo Catering became the cornerstone of our daughter’s wedding and wonderful celebration. Your staff epitomised professionalism, follow through and casually elegant hospitality. From the logic and flow of the bar and cocktail hour, to the aesthetics of the buffet and dining area, to the quality of the food; each element was so important and so well done. Our guests were honestly incredulous at how delicious and beautiful the food was... Thank you for all that you and your staff from Celilo did.” — The Chamberlains
