Brides, imagine yourself here, among the orchards of the Hood River Valley with the East Hills in the background. We staged a wedding here because we thought it would be great fun, and also to show what a perfect day we could create using local Gorge wedding vendors. With the help of Debbie Dennis of Riverhood Rentals and Hitched in the Hood, and our lovely couple, Sara Sakala and Cory Knight (who are engaged to be married next summer), we put together a “wedding” on the beautiful grounds of The Gorge White House. We proved what we already knew: it’s easy to plan a wedding in the Gorge because everything you need is right here. “The Gorge is a perfect place for a destination wedding,” Dennis said. “You don’t have to bring in anything from anywhere else.” Plus, the variety of activities the Gorge offers makes it a great place for couples who want to create an entire “experience” for their guests. “We have so many things to do here," Dennis said, "and everyone is eager to cater to the wedding population.” As you can see from the real weddings elsewhere in this guide, the Gorge offers a multitude of perfect venues for any season, and all kinds of weddings. “The Gorge is truly a magical and special place for a wedding,” Dennis said. “It’s a place where you can craft something memorable.” –Janet Cook

5 ways to go to a wedding in style

All You Need is a Little c.l.a.s.s. by Robin Allen, Wardrobe Stylist

Style is defined as “The way in which something is said, done, expressed, or performed…a quality of imagination and individuality expressed in one’s actions and tastes.” Style is not just about your clothing; it’s about your way of being. If you’re dressed right, the last and final accessory to any great look will be confidence.

1. comfort No matter what type of wedding you are attending, the number one concern I have for my clients is comfort. You have to dress for a wedding expecting it to be an all day affair. That’s why for the ladies I recommend simple silhouettes that are appropriately dressy without digging, poking or itching. The fabrics should be breathable, wrinkleresistant if possible, keep your bra strap covered for spontaneous photos and your bum covered for spontaneous dance moves! Suggested attire for looking classy while staying comfortable? My favorites for the ladies are cardigans, shawls, wrap dresses, maxis, anything stretch jersey—especially pencil skirts, dresses or trousers—full skirt knee length dresses, wedges, kitten heels or flats. As for the gentlemen, pressed cotton dress shirts, cotton trousers, pullover sweaters, tailored vests, suit jackets or suits, bowties, ties and pocket squares.

2. length Length is a very important factor when it comes to fitting my clients. Although it has a lot to do with your comfort level, it goes beyond that. Length can change the entire feeling of a garment. For instance, if you wear a dress or skirt to a wedding, the acceptable lengths are at the knee, right below the knee, mid-calf and floor length. (Note: if you know the bride is wearing a tea length dress, steer clear of the mid-calf length.) As for trousers, they should always brush the top of your shoes, no shorter. A trouser should give you the appearance that you’re taller than you really are. This goes for the gents as well. Suit jackets have a similar rule: the sleeve should brush the top of the hand, allowing a quarter- to half-inch cuff to peak out.

Stylist recommendation Invest in a tailor, seamstress or alterations person for the perfect fit.

3. accessories Okay, let’s talk bling. Accessories are the cornerstone to any ensemble. I’m talkin’ shoes, purses, jewelry, cuff links, pocket squares, hats, ties etc. They have to be good and they have to be right for the occasion. When it comes to weddings, this is dependent on theme, how formal or casual the occasion, and if it’s day or night. For formal or evening weddings, your shoes, purse and jewels can sparkle. For a more casual or day wedding, bigger, bolder pieces are welcome. Think turquoise and fun vintage pieces. If you can’t decide, go with simple, classic designs in precious metals, pearls or diamonds. As for the gents, keep it cool and complementary. Don’t try too hard. Some good combos are cuff links, tie and a tie clip, a fedora, skinny tie and a pocket square, or just a bowtie and a vest. Any combos go great with a slick pair of oxfords.

4. season No matter what the season, I always want my clients to be jolly—especially when it’s wedding season. So, when I’m getting them prepped I always ask about specific details. Is the wedding indoors or out? Is it located on the East Coast or West Coast? Will you be travelling or is it local? The answers to these questions play an important role in how to dress for a seasonal wedding. In spring, the weather can be moody so think in light layers like raincoats, trenches, cardigans, medium weight fabrics, tights, closed toed heels or flats, shawls. Summer invites the most casual style of all the seasons. Think lightweight fabrics like linens and silks, flowy maxi dresses, open-toed shoes (no flip flops, though), sleeveless blouses, flouncy skirts, prints and color. Fall (my favorite season) allows you to wear great coats (vintage perhaps), capes, sweaters, textures, plaids, thick tights or leggings, scarves, deep colors like hunter green, navy, burgundy and

16 • A Complete Guide to Weddings in the Columbia Gorge

gray. Ankle boots, oxfords and Mary Janes are all great shoe options for fall. Winter is cold yet luxe. Everything can get a little fuzzy and fancy—boots, coats, caplets, gloves, hats, scarves, heavy knit tunics, sweater dresses, turtlenecks, pull-overs, wool leggings, skirts or pants. Soft suede, velvet and cashmere work well. Stylist reminder Always wear a dress shirt underneath your layers just in case the room heats up and you need to remove an article or two.

5. style Finally, style! My first piece of advice to bridal couples is, “Keep it timeless and classic and always remember, it’s your day.” This is a great rule of thumb for deciding on wardrobe for the wedding. Bridesmaids: First of all, the bridesmaids dresses should complement, not overshadow or upstage the bride. Next is fit. Because of the many body types and body issues of bridesmaids, I always ask two questions: Do you like your knees? And, do you like your shoulders? These “yes” or “no” questions will quickly determine what style of dress might be good overall. To avoid these questions altogether, I recommend keeping the dresses in a soft color palette, flowy, just below the knee or floor length with an option of lightweight shrugs for spring and summer and deep, rich tea or floor length dresses with cap sleeves, shawls or furry wraps for fall and winter. Groomsmen: The guys’ clothing should always be at least one shade lighter or darker than the groom, and have matching shirts, shoes and accessories. Also, if for example they are all wearing solid gray bowties, then the groom’s bowtie should be striped. The idea is to make sure the bride and groom are the only ones in the spotlight. Parents & dates of the bridal party: The only rule here is that the parents of the couple dress age-appropriately and according to the colors and theme of the wedding. The dates or significant others should complement the colors of their bridal party counterpart. Accent or accessorize with a piece of jewelry, cardigan, scarf or tie. You should be a bit more put together than the regular guests. Stylist disclaimer to all attendees Please do not wear if it’s too tight, too fitted, too low, too short, too casual, too fussy or too polyester. Remember, it’s still a wedding and appropriateness and a sense of formality should always be honored.

Specializing in quality, lightweight individual eyelash extensions great for everyday wear or special occasions. We also offer full body waxing and lash/brow tinting.

They live in Portland. how they met: Through friends. how they got engaged: From early on, the couple felt their marriage was inevitable. “We’re a little too perfect for each other,” Tara says. They picked out a ring together at Silverado in Hood River. Jason hung onto it for a while and surprised Tara on a wildflower hike in Rowena, while they were looking out over the Columbia River. why they got married in the gorge: Hood River was always the couple’s favorite getaway. “We like the peacefulness in Hood River, and knew we wanted to have our reception at Nora’s Table,” says Tara, adding that “good food and wine” was important to them. They identified it as their priority, and worked the other details around that— even scheduling their wedding day on a Monday because that was the only day the restaurant could close for a private party. number of guests: 30 theme: They didn't really have a theme. things easy and simple," Tara says. favorite detail: “My bouquet!” Tara says. “It was gorgeous—a wildflower bouquet but still tightly bound so that it wouldn’t wilt throughout the day.” She had a hard time parting with it when it finally did begin to die. Also, the couple’s officiant was “really special to us,” Tara says. “She’s a yoga teacher we’ve both studied with, and it really made the day so much more personal and supportive.” unexpected moment: The couple hired a piano player for the reception, and had met with him only once before the wedding. “He could not have been a better match for us,” Tara says. “We gave him creative license with the music and he did an outstanding job, knowing how to change the tone as the night went on with little input from us at all.” advice for brides-to-be: Don’t get caught

up in all the little detailed things you could do for your wedding, and that everyone says you should do. “I didn’t have bridesmaids, party favors, or any of the other tiny details you read about and I’m so glad I kept it simple,” Tara says. “The only person who would have remembered any of those details was me, and it wasn’t important to me.” She also recommends asking a friend or mentor to be your officiant. “It’s difficult for me to imagine a stranger performing such an intimate ceremony, and it made the day so much warmer to have someone who loves us speaking on our behalf and guiding us through the ceremony.” the day summed up: “I want to do it all over again,” Tara says. “It was perfectly ‘us.’” honeymoon: The couple is going to Belize for a yoga retreat this winter.

Q&A For example: Arugula Salad with Wind Mountain Chèvre, Dried Black Bings & Cherry Balsamic Vinaigrette or Mt. Shadow Pork Loin with Royal Ann Cherry Chutney.

sirota johnston special event caterer

Q: What are the trends in food at weddings? A: Most of the clients I have been working with are very concerned with the food being locally sourced and seasonal. They don’t just want salmon—they want salmon harvested from the Columbia River. Q: How do you go about sourcing local food? A: I work very closely with local farmers, fishermen and ranchers. My poultry comes from Washington, my beef and pork come from Dufur, Ore., my salmon from the Klickitat River, and in the summer, you will typically find me at the Gorge Grown Farmers Market selecting the freshest veggies for my weekend weddings. Q: What should I look for in a caterer? A: Experience is a must. There are a lot of wonderful caterers out there, but catering a wedding is a specialty. I am often working with my clients for a year or more—not just with planning their menu, but helping them plan one of the most important days of their lives. Your caterer must be honest with you as well —even if they’re telling you something you don’t want to hear. Q: Do you specialize in certain foods? A: Fresh, seasonal and local. I love all foods from all places. I would say my specialty is creating a menu around the ingredients—not the other way around. If a bride’s favorite food is the cherry, I will use that to inspire the menu.

Q: Do you have certain pre-set menu options, or do you personalize menus? A: I prefer to customize menus for weddings. I try to work with my clients to build from scratch the menu that is perfect. It should reflect who they are, the foods they love, their personal style and individuality. If they are having a hard time deciding on a direction, I ask them for some inspiration. What foods have they bonded over? Do they have a foodrelated tradition? I had a bride last summer that ate popcorn almost every night with her fiancé. He even bought her a vintage popcorn maker for Christmas. We decided to do a really fun popcorn bar with tons of toppings for a late night snack. Q: What are the important functions a caterer serves, besides making the food? A: A full service caterer should not only provide great food and great service, but aid in most aspects of the wedding. Their servers should function as the setup/breakdown crew for the reception, helping with tables and chairs and some decor. They should help with keeping other vendors on the timeline that was planned. They should keep the venue/ reception beautiful by quickly cleaning any messes, bussing any dishes and adhering to any venue requirements for cleanup. Most importantly your caterer is responsible for not only making the clients happy, but making sure all the guests' needs are met. Q: What are some important questions I should ask a potential caterer? A: Don’t hesitate to ask your caterer any question. Often brides and grooms feel like they are bothering me when they ask a lot of questions. I always tell them, it’s not a bother at all. I have many weddings under my belt, but this is probably their first. I would rather answer a lot of questions and have clients that are fully informed than have a couple who asks nothing and expects more or less than we provide.

mobile catering Hiring food trucks for rehearsal dinners and weddings is a growing trend. According to wedding planner Debbie Dennis, she’s even helped several clients plan a less formal “welcome reception” to kick off a weekend wedding celebration, with food carts playing a starring role. “I’ve had couples that will get a permit for the Waterfront Park and have a food truck serving up casual fare and local microbrews to welcome all their guests to town,” she said. A variety of food trucks in the Gorge cater to this trend.

Nicole Delaney

SUMMER

august 10, 2013

jamie bright

occupations: She’s a floral designer; he’s a database administrator. They live in Portland. how they met: Nicole was living in Boulder, Colo., and the two met by chance when Jamie was visiting from the UK. They talked every day after he returned home and a long-distance relationship developed. After seven months, he sold his London flat, quit his job and moved to the U.S. how they got engaged: Jamie proposed at a scenic overlook above Boulder—the same place where the couple went on their first date. why they got married in the gorge: Nicole’s family has a beautiful property in Odell surrounded by pear orchards. She always knew she wanted to get married outdoors, and having her wedding on family property seemed like a romantic thing to do. Her family did a lot of work on the property to prepare for the wedding, turning it into a perfect spot for the ceremony and reception. It was only after Nicole and Jamie decided to get married in the Gorge that the couple realized its popularity as a wedding destination. “I can see why,” Nicole says. “Everyone really knows how to cater to a bride’s needs.”

number of guests: About 100. theme: Nicole was inspired by Mexican folklore when preparing for the wedding. “I love the culture, the colors and even the ‘Dia de los Mertos’ images,” she says. The couple incorporated maracas, Mexican prayer flags and other multi-colored Mexican-themed accents into the ceremony and reception. They also focused on local, sustainablyharvested food. Many of the menu items came from the wedding caterer’s garden, and fresh fish came from the bride’s father’s fishing boats in the Bering Sea.

favorite detail: Nicole loved seeing her flower girls be part of the ceremony—including her dog, Olive. She also loved the paper flowers that were made to decorate a fallen oak tree in front of the ceremony site. “The colors of the paper flowers made the setting that much more romantic and unique,” she says. unexpected moment: Nicole’s step-dad had engraved their names and wedding date into the new patio he had built while preparing the house and grounds for the wedding. “It was a total surprise to Jamie and me!” Nicole says. advice for brides-to-be: Delegate, delegate, delegate! “Don’t be afraid to ask people to do various things for you in the days before the wedding,” Nicole says. She spent so much time over months planning the decorations, visualizing the day and scheduling the order of events, she says. But in the days leading up the wedding, she simply didn’t have enough time to do all the things she knew she wanted. “This is when you have a free ticket to be bossy!” Nicole says. “Be kind, but be bossy. You’re the only one who knows how you want things to be.” the day summed up: Amazing! “People traveled far to celebrate with us and it was just so special,” Nicole says. “We really felt the love and unity amongst everyone throughout the day.” honeymoon: St. Lucia

Q&A ral creations for a wedding is a very personal and rewarding experience. Q: What recommendations can you give to maximize my floral budget? A: We always recommend repurposing pieces from the ceremony to the reception when possible. For example, hanging shepherd’s hook vase arrangements can be reworked into centerpieces or buffets. Bouquets can be reworked and used for the head table. I also work with each couple regarding their budget, vision, colors, textures and what “feel” they have in mind, and will make suggestions about how to get the most impact for their dollar, whether planning a $500 or $5,000 floral wedding package.

Bonnie heemeier wedding floral designer

Q: What are the current floral styles and trends? A: Trends include bringing the outdoors in, with an emphasis on larger and looser bouquets; using casual wildflowers and herbs freshly gathered from the garden to create a natural, unstructured feel; and adding lush, large, “romantic” blooms such as peonies, garden roses, and hydrangeas for impact and scale. Vintage themes with lace and burlap accents remain strong. Naturally inspired themes with birch, ferns, moss, succulents, and woodsy accents are very popular for Gorge weddings. Popular colors we’re seeing for 2014 include cobalt blue (Delphinium), periwinkle (Scabiosa), coral (Dahlias), yellow (freesia), and gray (Brazilla). Q: Can you create arrangements with locally-available, seasonal flowers? A: Yes, certainly. This is one of our favorite requests and where we really have the opportunity to shine. We own our own flower farm, Kanaka Creek Farm. There is nothing more rewarding than getting up in the morning, caring for the flowers on the farm, cutting the flowers and then bringing them all in to the shop to work into our designs. Going from farm to flo-

Q: How far in advance of the wedding will you create the bouquets and arrangements and how are they stored? A: Most of our design work is created the day before the wedding and stored in our walkin cooler to keep fresh. Larger pieces we will most often prototype in advance and then design or finalize onsite. Q: How will you work with my other vendors on my wedding day? A: As seamlessly as possible. We will always go out of our way to ensure that the set-up meets your vision. I am a very visual person with detail and if I see something that isn’t fitting into that vision I will personally take the extra steps to ensure that all details are carried through. Q: What do you find most rewarding about designing wedding flowers? A: Certainly the process of seeing all of the design elements come together on a single day after working on it for several months and realizing the vision is rewarding. But, truly, the best part is delivering the bridal bouquet and seeing the look on the bride’s face when you know you have exceeded her expectations. Feeling that joy and knowing you have contributed to the memories and experience of such a special occasion is wonderful.

occupations: She works for Nike; he works for UPS. They live in Portland. how they met: On a blind date at a Peruvian restaurant in Portland. “I walked in thinking I could be in and out in an hour,” Morgan says. But when she arrived, she was “dumbfounded” to find a “gorgeous, 6-foot-nine man standing there waiting for me.” She recalls being nervous and talking a mile a minute. Jeff says he fell in love with her as he sat across the table watching her talk. “I knew then that I could see myself living happily ever after with this woman,” he says. how they got engaged: The couple spent many fun weekends in the Gorge while they were dating, so Jeff proposed on a sunny afternoon picnic outing in Hood River as they watched windsurfers and kiteboarders on the river. why they got married in the gorge: While they were dating, Hood River became a favorite weekend getaway spot. “It’s such an easy drive from Portland, and it’s one of the most beautiful places in the Northwest,” Morgan says. “Jeff ’s family is from the Northwest so I wanted my family to experience the beauty of this area, too.”

number of guests: 120 theme: The couple picked colors and fabrics that went along with the fall season in the Northwest, as well as things that were special to them. A close family friend who owns a 1908 Letterpress created the invitations after “interviewing” Morgan and Jeff and coming up with designs that perfectly suited the couple. They used the natural brown paper with red accents as a foundation for the rest of the wedding. The invitations included a separate Letterpress map with directions from Portland to Hood River. Overnight guests also were treated to welcome baskets in their rooms that included maps of the Gorge, Washington apples and Oregon wines.

favorite detail: The couple’s dog, Blue, is a big part of their lives, so naturally he was part of the wedding. “He has an anxiety issue and is a very heavy breather,” Morgan says. While reciting their vows, Jeff leaned over and whispered to Morgan, “Do you hear Blue Dog breathing?” It made Morgan laugh. “Then all I heard for the rest of the ceremony was our dog panting loudly from the back of the room!” she says. “I think everyone in the place was giggling.” unexpected moment: The couple initially planned on having the ceremony in a tent on the grounds of the Columbia Gorge Hotel, but it rained all week leading up to the wedding day. “We had to quickly find a way to transform the Columbia Gorge Hotel dining room—which isn’t usually used for ceremonies,” Morgan says. They got creative, using a technique called “ribboning” in which dozens of ribbons are knotted and hung through a dowel rod to create a beautiful layered effect. “We added a few up-lights, lanterns hanging

from the ceiling and clusters of candle globes on the floor going up the aisle,” Morgan says. “It was absolutely perfect.” advice for brides-to-be: Don’t stress about the small things. “If you’re lucky enough to find the person you want to spend the rest of your life with (no matter when it is!), everything will fall into place,” says Morgan, who was 35 when she met Jeff, then 31. Also, she realized she needed some help in the few weeks before the wedding to tie up loose ends and make sure everything went smoothly, so she hired an “incredible” wedding planner. (Debbie Dennis at Hitched in the Hood.) Also, “invest in a great DJ, and a photographer that really ‘gets’ you and can roll with the flow on game day.” honeymoon: Kona, Hawaii.

Q&A we met in photography school, dated throughout, and got married shortly after graduation. We do have assistants available at any time, but the need is rare to call on them.

Blaine+Bethany wedding photographers

Q: Describe your photography style. A: We stress quality as number one. You’ll never find us cutting corners or taking the easy way out, whether that means lying on the ground in a suit, climbing a tree for the best angle, or spending extra hours on the editing. We’re always seeking the best light to make portraits in and much prefer natural light to using flash. Our goal for editing style is to keep the images colorful, beautiful, and timeless while never looking unnatural. We create images with a natural and timeless quality to them. Q: Describe your working style. A: What’s most important to us is that you enjoy your day to the fullest, and a big part of that is our ability to perceive the energy in the room and be sensitive to your needs and those of your guests. We approach each wedding in a relaxed, lighthearted manner, making people feel at ease while being photographed so they can enjoy themselves. Our goal is to be unobtrusive, to be a natural element of the day. Nothing should ever feel forced or uncomfortable. Q: Do you work as a team? Do you have other assistants? A: We always shoot together as a team. Being married ourselves, there is a certain connectedness we share and a seamless flow in which we operate. Neither of us is a lesser photographer, but we enjoy assisting and helping each other when needed. A little known fact is that

Q: What should I look for in a wedding photographer? A: First, you should love the portfolio of your photographer. Equally important, you need to connect personally with your photographer and enjoy their personality. They will be spending almost every moment with you on one of the most important days of your life, and if they make you feel uncomfortable or awkward, it will show in the images. If they make you smile, feel good and natural, that will also show in the images. Personality is huge. Q: How long will it take after my wedding to get proofs, albums etc.? A: We always try to have some “sneak peek” preview photos on Facebook the same week of the wedding. For the final edit, being punctual is important to us but also it isn’t to be rushed, possibly sacrificing quality. We typically have the final edit of images finished within four weeks of the wedding. Q: What’s the most important advice you give to couples about their wedding photography? A: If having beautiful photography of your wedding is a priority, then do your research and carefully select your photographer. Meet with your photographer; ask the venues and other vendors about their honest experiences with them. Ask to see the photographer’s complete wedding edits and inspect them to see if they carry a quality throughout all the images, not just the photographer’s favorites. Anyone with a digital camera can shoot a few weddings, throw up a website, and call themselves a professional. With photography, you get what you pay for. Wedding photography is art created at a moment’s notice. There’s little if any time to set up images. Someone with experience can anticipate events unfolding and shoot the moments with interesting compositions and creativity—with the technical aspects coming as second nature.

They live in Memphis, Tenn. how they met: Jeff worked with Robbie’s dad at Memphis International Airport, and first met Robbie when she was home from college for a visit. A year later, Robbie had graduated and taken a job in Memphis. She ended up living in the same apartment complex as Jeff. They started mountain biking together on weekends. “Then we thought, ‘Hey, let’s go out on a real date,’” Robbie says. “The rest is history!” how they got engaged: The couple was vacationing in Oregon and had gone to visit Timberline Lodge and do some hiking on Mount Hood. Jeff proposed that day on the mountain. why they got married on mount hood: The couple first began planning a wedding in Memphis. “But then we thought about how awesome it would be to head back to Oregon and have our wedding on the mountain where we got engaged,” Robbie says. Timberline Lodge was the first venue that came to mind, and the couple ended up settling on the Silcox Hut, about 1,000 feet farther up the mountain. “It seemed like the A Complete Guide to Weddings in the Columbia Gorge • 37

It really was picture-perfect.” advice for brides-to-be: Don’t sweat the small stuff. And consider having a small wedding. “You can really enjoy yourselves and your guests when you don’t have to worry about greeting 200 wedding guests,” Robbie says. the day summed up: Perfect! “We couldn’t have asked for a better wedding day,” Robbie says. “Everything was so beautiful.
