OF BOOKS NOTE Reviewed By Larry Cox© The Art of the Hollywood Epic by Cecil B. DeMille One hundred years ago, Cecil B. DeMille made the first feature film ever shot in Hollywood. “The S q u a d M a n , ” which was based on a 1905 stage play, featured Dustin Farnum and was about 75 minutes in length. Beulah Marie Dix, who wrote the play, also was responsible for the movie scenario. Although fairly primitive when viewed today, it nevertheless is a seminal work that redefined film-making in Hollywood and helped establish DeMille as a major director. More than any other filmmaker in history, DeMille mastered the art of the epic through his legendary motion pictures. Although he won only one Oscar (best picture for “The Greatest Show on Earth”), he captured a worldwide audience with his “cast of thousands” and powerful images, including the parting of the Red Sea in his blockbuster “The Ten Commandments.” In a fascinating new book co-written by his granddaughter, Cecilia de Mille Presley, a leading activist for the preservation of cinematic history, the man and his work are fully documented, supplemented with concept paintings, rare stills, props, costume designs and even DeMille’s thoughts on his various films. This is a fitting tribute that celebrates a legendary filmmaker and his craft. For Advertising Information Call (623) 594-1630

C OUCH THEATRE By Sam Struckhoff© PICKS OF THE WEEK These hits are now available on DVD and Blu-ray. “I’ll See You In My Dreams” (PG-13) — Carol (Blythe Danner, making an excellent turn as the lead of a film) is a retired teacher and vocalist, whose been living alone since her husband passed 20 years ago. She’s trying to find her way without moving into the retirement community with her gal pals. She learns how to enjoy this new phase in her life through an unlikely friendship with her pool cleaner, Lloyd (Martin Starr). While that friendship helps her connect with a lost part of herself, Carol also is drawn into a romance with the handsome and age-appropriate Bill (Sam Elliot, whom you may recognize as the stoic cowboy from every movie ever). The script cleverly dodges cliches endemic to retirement-age dramas and lets Danner explore every part of her character. The movie as a whole has a great sense of pacing and balance between heavy and light moments, making it a strong film that’s easy to watch. “Boulevard” (R) — Nolan (Robin Williams) is a quiet man dealing with the passing of his parents and a gap between him and his wife (Kathy Baker). On latenight drives from the nursing home, Nolan is drawn to a young male prostitute. Williams gives a nuanced and restrained performance in this dower drama that’s unfortunately weighed down with some cheesy dialog. While this is his last dramatic feature, Williams’ final appearance is set to release in a sci-fi comedy with an ensemble of British comedians who can operate at his comic velocity.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Cupid is strong in this week, with the cherub opening romantic possibilities and strengthening ties in loving pairs already in a relationship. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your dramatic flair might make things more interesting as you recount an event to your colleagues. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) This week you should get lots of chances to share your thoughts with people who will not only pay attention to what you have to say, but will want to hear more. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The pattern of recent changes could begin to shift from mostly workplace-related events to more personal matters. Keep an open mind. LEO (July 23 to August 22) An opportunity for work-related travel could be just what the Terrific The trip also could prove to be personally rewarding. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might want to suggest resolving an old disagreement before it can affect a matter expected to come up for discussion. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) The week favors combining dollops of creativity and practicality to work out both professional and personal problems. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Some surprising facts could come to light if you decide to probe deeper into an “opportunity” than you might usually do. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Someone close to you might seek your counsel. Hear them out, but hold out giving advice until you get credible answers. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A personal matter might need more of your time than you had expected. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A developing situation still needs more time to grow, and more time to study before you can plunge in and make some attention-getting waves.

A NTIQUE ANSWERS By Larry Cox© Q: What do you know about California Dresden dishes. — Suzi, Minneapolis, Minn. A: Each time I get a question about older china, I grab two books from my collection: Kovel’s New Dictionary of Marks: Pottery & Porcelain 1850 to the Present, by Ralph and Terry Kovel. It is published by Crown and offers hundreds of company marks, making it fairly easy to identify various pieces. For more detailed information, there’s nothing quite like Lehner’s Encyclopedia of U.S. Marks on Pottery, Porcelain & Clay by Louis Lehner. With more than 8,000 marks, logos and symbols, this hefty book is invaluable. Q: I have just inherited a set of sterling flatware in the Pendant of Fruit pattern. I have been told the silverware is more than a century old and quite scarce. — Polly, Boston, Mass. A: According to “Warman’s Sterling Silver Flatware: Value & Identification” by Phil Dries, your sterling set was manufactured by Lunt in 1939. Lunt silversmiths was established in 1901 in Greenfield, Mass., as Roger, Lunt & Bowlen Company. Q: I have a Singer sewing machine that is the Model 15-30. It is in an oak cabinet that has been damaged by dampness. A neighbor has offered me $600 for it. Should I sell? — Bill, Indianapolis, Ind. A: Take the money and run. According to several dealers I consulted, your machine is probably worth about $300, and perhaps even less with the cabinet damage you described. Write Larry Cox in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send him an email to questionsforcox@aol.com.

Dip in the Dow Signals Opportunities Despite large daily moves in both stock and bond prices, stocks have struggled to rise this year – they’ve mostly stayed in a tight range. And while the S&P 500 is down less than 3% from its recent record high, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (Dow) has dropped 5.1%. Declines of 5% or more, called dips, typically happen three or four times a year, but this is the Dow’s first dip in 2015. It’s a good time to look for opportunities hidden under the market’s surface. More than half of the stocks in the S&P 500 have declined 10 percent or more from their respective highs. Consider taking advantage of those lower prices by selecting stocks
with good prospects that fit your situation. Modestly Improving Economy and Earnings The fundamentals of economic and earnings growth continue to improve slowly, and we think their positive trend should support higher stock prices over time. • Solid job growth in July The economy added 215,000 jobs in July, slightly below the expected gain of 225,000, according to Bloomberg. The unemployment rate remained 5.3%, as expected. And the broader underemployment rate continued to decline. That rate includes discouraged workers and those who want full-time

jobs but are working parttime. Wages rose slightly and were up 2.1% over the past year. • Leading indicators up The index of leading indicators rose 0.6% in June, suggesting the economy will continue to expand over the next year. • Rising earnings - Second-quarter earnings for companies in the S&P 500 were up 1.5% over the past year, according to Thomson Reuters. Better earnings in other industries offset the steep declines in energy company profits. • Fair valuations - Overall large-cap stocks (those of large companies) are fairly valued in our view, since the S&P 500 is priced at 16.9 times earnings. Don’t Be Distracted Headlines from Greece and Puerto Rico have recently raised concerns and triggered market volatility. In both cases, over-
spending has left them without the money to pay their bills. Their troubles are distressing, but your focus should remain on making decisions based on your situation.

The older we get, the cloudier our thinking becomes. It happened again today. A patient fell for a “cleaning and exam special” advertisement. He came back surprised that the $49.00 special found enough treatment to cost him $10,000! The cleaning took about 15-20 minutes whereas in our office, it takes the better part of an hour. People, THERE ARE NO BARGAINS OUT THERE! It’s OK, GET A SECOND OPINION before you spend your money needlessly. —Jack Luftman, BSc, DDS, PC

YOU WOULD BELIEVE It was beloved Russian author Leo Tolstoy who made the following sage observation: “Nothing can make our life, or the lives of other people, more beautiful than perpetual kindness.” ••• If you see a group of flamingoes together in one place, it will be handy to know that the appropriate collective noun is a “flamboyance.” ••• You might be surprised to learn that feta cheese has been around for 6,000 years. ••• It may be the hottest part of summer in the Northern Hemisphere, and temperatures in the United Arab Emirates may be reaching the triple digits Fahrenheit, but that’s no impediment to winter sports in Dubai, the UAE’s most populous city. Residents and visitors can take a break from the heat at Ski Dubia, an indoor ski resort featuring a 290-foot mountain, sled and toboggan runs, climbing towers, an ice cave and even face-to-beak encounters with penguins. ••• As the new school year kicks off in the United States, it might be interesting to renew a familiarity with a now-disused word: a “belter-werrits” is an annoying child. ••• If you’re planning a sporting visit to Pennsylvania, be sure to note that dynamite-assisted fishing is illegal in that state. ••• Thought for the Day: “Courage is the price that life exacts for granting peace. The soul that knows it not, knows no release from little things.” -- Amelia Earhart ••• The story that’s been adapted to film more than any other is the fairy tale “Cinderella.”

Older adults who have stopped driving are almost twice as likely to suffer from depression and nearly five times more likely to enter a long-term care facility than those who remain behind the wheel, according to a new report released by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety and Columbia University. The study examined adults ages 65 and up who have permanently given up driving and the impact it has on their health and mental well-being. Nearly 81 percent of the 39.5 million seniors ages 65 and older are still behind the wheel in the United States. “Maintaining independence by continuing to drive safely is important to overall health and well-being,” Gorman said. “When the decision is made to relinquish the keys, it is vital to mitigate the potential negative effects through participation in programs that allow seniors to remain mobile and socially connected.” As an advocate for driver safety AAA provides many programs and resources for senior drivers. Roadwise Review: This four-hour defensive driving class for those 55 and older takes place in various locations throughout Arizona each month and offers a potential insurance discount. The course covers changing laws; ways drivers change as they age; and tips and tools. Provided by Valerie Vinyard, public affairs specialist, AAA Arizona.

Perhaps that’s because, on average, the 100-yearolds report feeling more than two decades younger than they are, and 60 percent say they do not feel old. Given the choice between being their current age or 10-years-old, more than half of centenarians (58 percent) say they would rather be 100.

Spinning and yoga classes are no longer reserved for only the young and restless. Take a closer look around, and you might just find that it’s great-grandparents who are out-pedaling you on the stationary bikes. In fact, according to UnitedHealthcare’s 100@100 survey, nearly a quarter of 100-year-olds (24 percent) report doing cardiovascular exercise indoors at least once a week; almost one-third (29 percent) meditate or do other stress-relieving activities; and even more say they exercise to strengthen their muscles (34 percent). Every year, UnitedHealthcare polls 100 centenarians for their insights and perspectives on reaching the century milestone. To mark the survey’s 10th anniversary in 2015, UnitedHealthcare also polled 100 10-yearolds to compare responses among the generations.

6 Tips to Conquer Stress As boomers retire from their jobs at unprecedented rates in the U.S., you’d think they’d be spending their free time with friends, lingering over the morning newspaper and coffee or taking January vacations in a warm place. But many seniors are finding themselves in a predicament that few anticipate in retirement: parenting for a second time. Census reports indicate that 2.7 million grandparents are responsible for their grandchildren. Their added duties may be fulfilling, but they may be stressful, too. “When stressed, the body releases substances such as cortisol and adrenaline that affect every organ and can cause muscle tension, insulin secretion and increased heart rate,” said Arthur Hayward, M.D., a geriatrician and the clinical lead physician for elder care with Kaiser Permanente’s Care Management Institute. “You can’t avoid stress, but managing it can help preserve your health and well-being,” Dr. Hayward added. He recommends identifying and understanding the cause of your stress and finding ways to relieve it, such as these eight tips: 1. S et realistic goals and expectations, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. 2. Plan time for yourself. 3. E xercise & eat a balanced diet. 4. T ry relaxation techniques such as meditation or yoga. 5. G et enough sleep. Drinking caffeinated beverages and alcohol can affect your ability to get a good night’s sleep. 6. Stay positive. For more information, go to kp.org/healthyaging.

By Tony Rizzo© out in January in 3D and IMAX, and soon after, the heist crime film “Comancheria,” with Ben Foster and Jeff Bridges. Mark Wahlberg’s production of “Entourage,” which made the move from TV to movie screens, was a minor success. The film cost $27 million to produce and earned $44 million. “Ted 2” cost $68 million to make and made $160 million, which was a far cry from “Ted,” which only cost $51 million to make and earned a whopping $549 million in theaters. He’ll next be seen in the disaster drama “Deepwater Horizon,” with Kurt Russell, Kate Hudson and John Malkovich, out Sept. 30. We should mention “Transformers: Age of Extinction,” which cost $210 million and brought in $1.1 billion. Sounds like it’s better to be a “Transformer” than in an “Entourage”!

V ET’S POST Hearing loss is one of the most common disabilities for military personnel. It can come from all types of experiences: aircraft engines, firearms, trucks, artillery and helicopters. Once the fragile nerve cells in the ear are damaged, you have hearing loss or tinnitus (ringing or buzzing in the ears). If you ever served in a combat zone, hearing loss can be even greater. If you’ve had hearing loss that you’ve tried to ignore, don’t. It’s not going to get better on its own. If you’ve missed out on some of the words in conversations, or if you keep asking people to repeat what they’ve said, or even if the music you used to listen to doesn’t sound the same anymore, you likely have hearing loss. In most cases, it can be fixed with hearing aids or implants. Depending on your rate of loss, getting your hearing back could

The first step is to call the VA audiology clinic to schedule a full audiology workup for service-related hearing loss or tinnitus. Even if you think you don’t have hearing loss, go anyway and get a baseline workup for future comparison. If you can’t get a fast appointment at a VA facility, another option is to check in your community. Often audiologists and hearing-aid providers will offer free hearing tests. Tell them you need both the “speech discrimination” and “puretone” tests. If you show any hearing loss, that’s your first document in submitting a claim to the VA. If your hearing loss is determined to be service-related, a hearing aid will be provided free of charge, and batteries under certain circumstances.

How to Keep Seniors Mobile at Home You’re getting older, and those day-to-day tasks that never took a second thought are becoming more difficult. Your kids are urging you to downsize and move to an apartment in a senior living community where everything would be on one level, but that’s the last thing you want to do. After all, home is where your heart is, and it’s where you want to stay. Fortunately for today’s seniors, there are many devices that make aging easier and safer. These devices can also increase mobility in the home. If you’re unsteady on your feet and are at risk of falling, or if you suffer from painful osteoarthritis, here are some ways to increase mobility while staying safe in your home. • Reduce clutter and move tripping hazards, like stacks of books, off the floor. • If you live with cats, put collars with bells on them so you always know where they are. Pets, too, can be a tripping hazard. • Consider using a cane. Today’s canes come in pretty colors and patterns and will help you keep your balance as you’re

walking around the house. • Invest in a grabber pole so you can reach cans and bags of food and other items stored on high shelves without using a stepladder. • Attach Bathroom Aids Installing grab bars or safety handles on tubs and walls, along with bath and shower chairs, can help seniors regain their independence by giving them the confidence they need to safely bath themselves, even if they have a home health aide helping them. These days, too many seniors find themselves losing their independence due to the natural aging process. According to Marketing Charts, 26 percent of seniors surveyed said that losing their independence was their biggest fear. That’s higher than the 13 percent of seniors who feared moving into a nursing home or 3 percent fearing death. Instead of seniors fearing a loss of independence, let’s look at some ways they can regain it and start making all of their retirement dreams come true!

Greener, Cleaner Bathrooms If you’re considering a green home renovation, or building an eco-friendly house, you’ll likely put a lot of thought into heating and cooling, as well as kitchen appliances. But don’t overlook the value of greening your bathrooms, too. Environmentally-friendly bathrooms can conserve water and energy, while helping create a healthier home atmosphere by reducing the need for chemical cleaners. As you’re choosing eco-conscious plumbing fixtures for the bathroom, keep a few key considerations in mind: Water Conservation Low-flow bathroom fixtures are significantly improved over earlier versions that conserved water at the expense of effectiveness and user experience. Look for WaterSense labeled

products to help ensure your toilet, showerhead and faucet choices are water-saving, high performing styles. Energy Efficiency While bathrooms generally consume less electricity than other rooms in the house, it still pays to keep efficiency in mind when choosing bathroom lighting and ventilation fans. Look for light fixtures that are Energy Star-rated. Replace incandescent bulbs with more efficient LEDs or CFLs. Choose a ventilation fan that can remove humidity and odors from the room while still conserving energy. Greener Cleaning A greener bathroom can easily be a cleaner, and healthier room for you to live and grow, with simple choices that can improve the environment.

On Sept. 21, 1989, the Senate Armed Forces Committee unanimously confirms President George H. Bush’s nomination of Army Gen. Colin Powell as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Powell became the first black American to achieve the nation’s highest military post. On Sept. 22, 1953, the world’s first four-level interchange opens in Los Angeles at the intersection of the Harbor, Hollywood, Pasadena and Santa Ana freeways — 32 lanes of traffic weaving in eight directions at once. On Sept. 23, 1969, the trial for eight anti-war activists charged with the violent demonstrations at the 1968 Democratic National Convention opens in Chicago. The trial turned into a circus as the defendants used the court to attack President Richard Nixon, the war, racism and oppression. On Sept. 24, 1996, bestselling author Stephen King releases two new novels at once. “Desperation” was released under King’s name, while “The Regulators” was published under his pseudonym, Richard Bachman. On Sept. 25, 1978, a Pacific Southwest Airlines 727 jet collides in mid-air with a small plane over San Diego, killing 153 people. A student pilot did not comply with air controller instruction to keep the small plane below 3,500 ft. altitude. On Sept. 26, 1580, English seaman Francis Drake returns to England, becoming the first British navigator to sail around the world. Drake had set out from England on Dec. 13, 1577, with five ships on a mission to raid Spanish holdings on the Pacific coast of the New World.

Need to bring along a bow while you’re transporting a present? Place it inside a zip-lock sandwich bag, close it partially, fill it with air and seal. The bow will make it to your destination uncrushed, and you can stick it on at the last minute. ••• Make a floating cooler for your pool with this easy trick using a pool noodle. You’ll need a plastic container, a bungee cord or length of rope that will wrap around the container and a pool noodle cut into four pieces no longer than the sides of the container. Run the cord or rope through the noodle pieces, line noodle pieces along sides of container, and secure rope or cord tightly an inch or so lower than the container’s lip. Toss in pool, fill with drinks and ice, and enjoy.
The combination of one part warm water and three parts baking soda makes a great paste for removing rust spots. Simply use an old toothbrush in a circular motion to smear in the paste and wipe away rust. ••• Having trouble starting that backyard charcoal grill? Maybe you just need to head for the snack table. Potato chips and nacho tortilla chips (like Doritos) will burn bright and hot enough to cook your dinner, and certainly well enough to give your charcoal a great start. ••• Do you need to cross out a note so nobody can read it? Take this tip to the scratch pad: Instead of scribbling over something to be crossed out, instead write random letters over your words until the whole thing is illegible.

Grand Season Business Profile
Briseno Azteca Imports Has Been Helping Families Beautify Homes for Over Two Decades By Roberta M. Meehan© Are you looking for a family-owned, Valley-wide company with a stellar reputation to enhance your home inside and out with unique and distinctive flooring, granite countertops, landscaping, customized cabinets, concrete water fountains, specialized pottery, and countless other tile and ceramic creations? Perhaps the place for you to head is Briseño Azteca Imports, a business that has been proudly serving its customer for over 22 years and has been at the same Surprise location since 2004. This company will gladly tell you, “Customer Service is our first priority and we assure you that you will be 100% satisfied with our products and services.” All work from Briseño Azteca Imports is done by employees who are licensed, bonded, and insured. The business is registered with PORA (Property Owners and Residents Association), also known as “The Voice of Good Government in Sun City West.” Although virtually all of the Briseño Azteca Imports business is residential, the company also has a commercial license. Hugo Briseño, in charge of sales, is an ASU graduate with a degree in architecture. He feels this often helps him visualize the client’s picture of the final product. Thus, he is the “inside man” and often the one the customer first meets on entering the store. Of course, as the chief sales person, Hugo is also in charge of selling and receiving goods. He often makes trips to Mexico to check on inventory and production, particularly at the Briseño warehouse in Quiroga, a city in southern Mexico. They also import pottery from many other cities around For Advertising Information Call (623) 594-1630
Mexico, which makes their variety unique. While Hugo Briseño is the “inside man” in charge of the store, the design, and the estimates, his father, Jose Briseño is the “outside man.” Jose is in charge of flooring, pavers, construction granite, and countertops (including custom countertops), and anything to do with installation. Hugo’s wife, Sandra, is part of the business too, as she helps with the bookkeeping. Hugo’s mother, Sabina Briseño, is in charge of the pottery division. The company also deals in a wide variety of concrete fountains. These come from California. In addition, leather furniture of all types – equipales – is available. Equipales are Mexican leather pieces known for their outstanding resilience and longevity. Also available are custom made cabinets ranging from a new custom kitchen to a custom cabinet to fit any nook or cranny. This is especially important because most “standard stores” sell “standard” sizes and designs but sometimes those “standard” pieces are just not right for the individual customer. At Briseño Azteca Imports they work with many types of wood including alder, oak, maple, hickory, pine, and poplar. The individual customer is particularly important to the Briseños who believe in working closely with each of them to produce the perfect outcome. Starting from the drawing of the plans to the selection of tile flooring, granite counter tops, backsplashes, custom cabinets and any other project the homeowner has, the Briseños guide the customer to make their visions come reality. At Briseño Azteca Imports

String Art Shaped Like Your State By Donna Erickson© Remember making lanyard friendship bracelets or tie-dying T-shirts at camp as a kid? Think retro, and get inspired to create a “summer camp”style craft in your own backyard with your family. String-art kits are available online and at hobby and toy stores for this craft that’s all the rage, but you can gather your own supplies. To get started, here are basic materials and directions for doing string art in the shape of your state. Use these instructions as a taking-off point for any design you choose. Here’s what you’ll need: --3/4-inch-thick wooden board approximately 10 inches by 12 inches (available at hardware or lumber stores. Check for inexpensive pieces in their scrap bin.) --sandpaper (optional) --standard letter-size paper printout of your state (download from an online map or trace from an atlas) --1 1/2-inch framing nails --hammer --crochet thread, embroidery floss or thin string in your favorite colors and shades.

Here’s the fun: 1. Sand rough edges on the board, then center and tape the map on the best side. Hammer nails about halfway into the board following the outline of the state, making sure they are equal in height and about 1/2 inch apart. Remove paper. 2. Tie the end of colored string around one nail. Begin the design by wrapping it around another nail. Weave it back and forth from nail to nail in any direction you choose. If you aren’t pleased with how a section looks, unwind and do it again. Knot your final string around a nail, and cut. 3. Display the eye-catching art on a shelf, or add a hook to the back and hang on the wall. Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” airs on public television nationwide. IVING WELL
Wash your hands before preparing foods. Hands should be washed thoroughly with hot, soapy water for 20 seconds before and after handling fresh produce, raw meat, poultry or seafood, as well as after using the bathroom, changing diapers or handling pets. Removing outer leaves or peeling may decrease the amount of pesticide residues or harmful microbes on fruits and vegetables. Wash all fruits and vegetables with cool tap water to remove dirt and residues. Some companies are marketing “produce cleaning” solutions, but these have not been proven more effective than plain water in removing microorganisms. Scrub firm produce with a clean produce brush. Melons and cantaloupes have been involved in several cases of foodborne illness. Before slicing these fruits, the rind must be scrubbed thoroughly to prevent the knife from transferring bacteria to the cut surface. Don’t wash fruits and vegetables with household soaps and detergents; these products have not been approved for washing produce.
By Susie Lyons© Use clean cutting boards and utensils when handling fresh produce. Use one clean cutting board for fresh produce and a separate one for raw meat, poultry and seafood. Wash surfaces often. Cutting boards, dishes, utensils and countertops should be washed with hot soapy water after coming in contact with fresh produce or raw meat, poultry or seafood. Refrigerate fresh produce within two hours of peeling or cutting. Discard cut produce left at room temperature for more than two hours. At the serving table, don’t let the outer rinds of melon or cantaloupe touch freshly cut surfaces. Use a cooler with ice or ice gel packs to transport or store cut fresh fruits and vegetables at picnics or other summer events. Keep raw meats in a separate cooler. K ITCHEN DIVA A sandwich is the perfect way to enjoy a simple, yet filling meal on a hot summer day. A modern Vietnamese banh mi sandwich is a delicious melding of Asian spices and ingredients encased in a French baguette. The original components of the banh mi (pronounced BUN-mee), a generic term used to describe food made with flour, were introduced to
Banh Mi, which literally means “bread made from wheat.”
34
By Angela Shelf Medearis© Saigon by the French in the early 20th century. A traditional French-style banh mi consisted of buttered baguettes that the locals called banh tay (literally, “foreign cake”), and ham or pate. Banh mi, along with its unique variations, migrated to America along with the Vietnamese families who fled the war in the 1960s and ‘70s. They combined the traditional banh mi with ingredients from their new home. Today, a variety of banh mi sandwiches are available from barbequed pork to vegetarian tofu versions topped with marinated vegetables, spicy chili sauce, soy sauce and mayonnaise, and encased in a warm baguette or a flour tortilla.

Women Put Aside More in 401(k)s Than Men Are women more diligent savers than men? A 2014 study conducted by Fidelity Investments seems to suggest so. Fidelity’s research found that women saved more than men in their 401(k) plans, as of the year ending Sept. 30, 2014. This stems from the fact that women joined their employer’s retirement plans in greater numbers than their male counterparts. Yet women still aren’t without their own financial hurdles. While the Bureau of Labor Statistics found that women are 33 percent more likely to earn a Bachelor’s Degree than men, they still earn 77 cents for every dollar their male colleagues take home, and that wage gap

has been difficult to close. This is a key reason why it’s important to make every dollar count. It all begins with developing good savings habits. A general rule of thumb is to save 10 percent of your income, specifically in a tax-advantaged retirement account such as an employer’s 401(k) plan. Simplified Employee Pension (SEP-IRA) plans are available for the self-employed and come with a tax deduction that will help you owe less to Uncle Sam each year. Of course, no one knows what the future will bring, which is why it’s important to have at least three months’ worth of savings in the event of an emergency. This will allow you to cover key expenses such as rent or mortgage, food and car payments, and more. Now, is it possible to be too concerned with safety? Unfortunately, the answer is yes. While some may be tempted to avoid the stock market due to fears of volatility or the threat of a bear market, doing so could leave you at risk of falling short of your investment goals and not accumulating enough assets for a comfortable retirement. Investment vehicles such as your employer’s 401(k) plan or an IRA account can be great options, but your choices don’t end there. The growth of women’s saving habits is important because, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, nearly half (47 percent) of the U.S. labor force is comprised of women, and that percentage will likely climb higher in the years to come.

Moving With Pets When moving houses, you make a checklist of the utility companies you need to contact for stopping and starting services. You also schedule all the volunteer or professional movers to pack, transport and unpack your belongings, and you let all your friends and family members know your new address. Additionally, you need to remember to make plans for your special family members, too — your pets. Pets add an extra element to a move, but it doesn’t have to be stressful for you or them. Here are some tips to help you plan your move successfully with your pet in mind. • Microchipping: It’s recommended all pet owners microchip their cats and dogs, especially before planning a move. • Name tags: Update your cat or dog’s collar with its name, your new home information, and a phone number that will stay active even after the moving period. • Food and medications: Don’t pack your dog’s or cat’s food and medications until you are ready to get into the car to make the move. • On moving day, be sure to keep your pet in your personal car or in the cab of the moving truck. Never put a pet in the back of a moving truck, because it could become injured or sick. • While packing the moving truck, keep your pet in a small room in the house so it doesn’t become overwhelmed by the commotion. A bathroom or closet works well. • Upon arrival at your new home, put your pet in a small room while the unpacking happens. Once the moving truck is unloaded, you can let your pet out to explore your new home together. For Advertising Information Call (623) 594-1630

Grand Season Business Profile
Solar Concepts Says ‘Let There Be Light!’ By Pamela Holechek© Arizonans love sunshiny days but people who live in hotter areas of the state literally become seasonal shut-ins. Every interior-window covering is closed to help keep out heat and harmful ultra-violet rays, while helping to lower air-conditioning bills. Rooms become cave-like, energy-draining. Instead of turning on a 100watt or higher bulb again and again during the day, adding to electrical costs, wouldn’t at least 300 to 600 watts of illumination help revive the soul? What if this type of natural daylight came without added heat or higher electric bills? Happily, there is an energy-saving way to experience the sun’s light year-round, and this wonder is readily available. Conveniently, Solar Concepts, the Arizona Premier Dealer™ of Solatube® Daylighting Systems, can bring such a bright idea to life. “Solatube® is the original passive-solar lighting system,” says Angela Acerno, Solar Concepts’ co-owner, along with Anne Luciano, her mother.
“In 2007, after three years as the general manager, I became Solar Concepts’ CEO and president,” Angela says. “I just celebrated my 11-year, Solar Concepts anniversary. “Mom became the vice president back then, and now at 86, she still enjoys working,” adds Angela. “We have a history here, as do our veteran employees.” Solatube® products have longevity, as well. The system was developed in Australia in the 1980s and has been doing business internationally since 1991. Their award-winning technology has earned the status of a global leader in residential & commercial daylighting systems. “Solatube has kept its value by constantly improving the patented technology of their distinctive features,” says Angela. “Traditional skylights, for instance, deliver far less light, add heat to rooms, may leak and are expensive. And other similar tube systems just can’t top Solatube’s innovations.” In simple terms “Solatube uses a patented system that

incorporates revolutionary, light-collecting technology and Spectralight® Infinity reflective tubing. It’s all in the materials they use,” Angela says. “The materials capture 99 percent of the natural light. When this light travels through the shiny tube and hits the lens on a room’s ceiling, it is then spread throughout the space.” Thankfully, the only aspect, that a customer must know is the need to transform a dark hallway or room with free, natural light, through a onetime purchase of a no-maintenance, warranted product. From first contact through the approximate two-hour installation, Angela and her entire staff will discuss every detail of the “enlightening” process. “I like to sell the way I like to be sold to,” Angela notes. “When a customer comes in or calls, I ask, ‘Tell me what you want.’ After listening and possibly asking more questions, I just say, ‘Here’s what I think you need.’ I stay with the facts and never try to sell something that may not be necessary.” All Solatube products are ENERGY STAR rated, qualifying for state and federal tax credits. In addition to selling and installing Solatube, Solar Concepts company offers Solar Star® Attic Fans to help ventilate heat and moisture statewide. “We love what we do,” continues Angela. “This product
makes you so happy to just have more light in your home or business. Once a customer called and said she loves the product. Then she said, ‘I don’t know if I should tell you this, but my husband and I dance in the moon light under our solar light.’ I thought that was so cute how she said it.” Contact Solar Concepts at 480-968-1777 for additional information, a free estimate or an appointment, Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m; Friday and Saturday hours are only by appointment. Also visit their extensive website at www. solarconceptsaz.com. Clip the Solar Concepts ad on page 40 of this issue for a $50-off coupon. Then, let there be light!

AAA SENIOR PLACEMENT AZ A Message from Sue Royer “I was born and raised in inner city Chicago, the sixth of eighteen children with fifteen brothers. Being the oldest daughter, I was always a caregiver which I believe influenced me to pursue work in the healthcare industry. Today, I have three daughters and five grandchildren. Years ago, I volunteered for hospice and knew immediately that helping seniors was my calling. I was soon employed by hospice but I felt something was missing. I realized it was the limited time I was able to spend with my clients. Having my own business allows me to provide the intimate hands on service needed in our community. I am committed to our seniors throughout their lives and I thank the community for the opportunity to serve.” Sue Royer Director

Turn Back the Clock on Muscle Loss Did you know age-related muscle loss starts when you turn 30? Whether we like it or not, muscle starts to deteriorate with age. This age-related muscle loss is known as sarcopenia. Sarcopenia springs from many factors, including inactivity,
inadequate protein intake and increased levels of the regulatory protein myostatin, which regulates muscle growth. Clinical studies have shown that high levels of myostatin can lead to reduced muscle mass. Sarcopenia impacts overall health as well.
Age-related muscle loss can limit the ability to perform everyday activities. Additionally, it increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and obesity as well as cardiovascular, neurological and orthopedic diseases. However, there are steps to take to help mitigate the effects of sarcopenia. Incorporate Exercise Moderate physical activity, plus resistance training, may help promote muscle growth
and reduce the impact of sarcopenia. Focus on Food Adequate protein intake is an important part of a healthy diet, especially with age, to help maintain muscle health. Nutritional Supplements The body, as we get older becomes less efficient at absorbing key nutrients. Many vitamins play a large role in maintaining our healthy bodies.

SEPTEMBER 2015
Getting Enough Sleep? Like many Americans, you may spend hours at the gym, choose all the right foods and think you’re in peak health — but you could be missing a vital part of the equation. How do you know if you’re getting enough sleep? The Healthy Sleep project recommends these tips: • Quantity: Get seven to nine hours of sleep each night. Most adults need at least seven hours of nightly sleep for optimal health and productivity. Set a regular bedtime that is early enough for you to get a full night of sleep. • Quality: Ensure that the quality of your sleep is good. Avoid anything that can lead to fitful, interrupted sleep. • Timing: Follow a consistent schedule. Your body sleeps best at night, when it’s dark, and functions best when you keep a regular bedtime. • Health: Seek help for your sleep problems. Can’t stop snoring? Besides being a nuisance to your bed partner, loud and frequent snoring can be a warning sign for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). If you have difficulty falling asleep or wake up feeling exhausted, speak with a board-certified sleep medicine physician, who has the training and expertise to diagnose and treat sleep illness.
