ue to the success of the inaugural event “Hidden Rooms,” presented earlier this summer, Art At The Rendon’s latest production will continue the creative narrative with the building and its colorful history as an icon of the Arts District.

A

rt At The Rendon

presents “STORIES,” an immersive, operatic work that will transform the vacant Rendon Hotel through a layering of film projection as well as live performances benefiting Inner-City Arts and Cornerstone Theater Company.

“STORIES” will blend film projections with live performances activating the interior and exterior of the now vacant hotel. The original bar, Licha’s Bar and Grill, will be reimagined as a 1920s speakeasy with libations from Arts District favorites: Angel City Brewery, Infuse Spirits and Pali Wine, and music from The Vignes Rooftop Revival. Ralph Ziman will be lead in the project using his film, art, and music backgrounds to create and produce unique content along with experimental filmmaking and local broadcast expert Nolan Silverstein from Dromebox Laboratories and cinematographer Stevie George. Art At The Rendon is an ongoing series of programs that feature the best in art, musical performance, lectures, artist residencies and film screenings seeking to celebrate and support the Arts. Showing off the rich history of the area, Art At The Rendon continues fostering creativity in the downtown Los Angeles District by generating a space for artists to showcase their art, host performances as well as celebrations.

VOL 11 NO 1 - NOV 1ST - NOV 7TH 2018/ DTLA-WEEKLY.COM

When Ralph Ziman and Maria Greenshields-Ziman were asked their thoughts on what inspires them the most about DTLA or what makes them do what they do, the response was this

“We’re inspired by the diverse talent in Downtown LA and we are hoping to encourage the creation of art, and cultivate a creative platform. We are both working artists, and can relate to the struggle many emerging artists face finding spaces to showcase their work, and would like to help in that journey.” Sounds like these two have got what it takes to make something happen for Los Angeles. “STORIES” is a limited three-day special fundraiser event open to the public from Friday, November 9th to Sunday, November 11th, 2018. 100% of proceeds from ticket sales will benefit Inner-City Arts and Cornerstone Theater Company. hese attributes, great in and of themselves, seem to pale in comparison to the achievements this relatively new establishment has attained. The executive chef, an unassuming man of a quiet demeanor, Ruiz “Rui” Mateo, who is of Peruvian and Japanese descent, has caused quite the stir this year alone having received some notable awards in competition.

Sake Dojo has managed to accomplish many hard to reach goals.

“Rui is one of the best Japanese Cuisine Chefs,” said Don Tahara, co-owner of the sophisticated establishment during a tepid Fall evening. “He won first place in the Japanese Government’s Washoku World Challenge in January. He will compete with the winners from Osaka, Bangkok, New York and Paris, in Tokyo in January 2019 for the world title.”

Paying their dues to those rightly deserving of such accolades weren’t the only items the ambitious crew at the Japanese restaurant had in mind. Sake Dojo bakes their own Japanese bread and housecured bacon with cherry smoke.

Sake - Sake - and More Sake Sake Dojo features an Enomatic It’s the first of its kind to be used for sake. It was originally built to be a wine dispensing system that we converted to provide a metered pour of Sake. It’s all refrigerated to specific temperatures. As the air is depleted from the bottle, you see argon gas, which is heavier than air, pumped in to prevent oxidation.

7

Tahara, gently knocking on the top of the glimmering sushi bar states, “This bar top is made completely out of zinc. We wanted to pay homage to the French and European bistros of the early 20th Century.”

Craving that dish after such a description seems almost natural, so cruise on down 1st Street, where Sake Dojo is located in between Alameda and San Pedro. Sake Dojo has the number one Sake and Japanese Craft Beer selection in the country are is able to carry items that aren’t typically carried in America. The same goes for the curated spirits and cocktail list.

As a special treat, Downtown Weekly was given a cocktail that no one had ever tasted before.

It had no name, but it did have cantaloupe. And it was a naturally sweet, intoxicating couche pond of melon and sake. Tiny sips until we reached the bottom, revealed three, previously floating, cantaloupe scoops that had been teasing themselves just below the surface. It didn’t have a name but it did when we finished. We left Sake Dojo after quite few more, forever naming the drink, “The Love Pool.” There was another item, or rather tool, maybe even an invention, that stood out reclining against a small pillar on the surface of the bar. The Kyoto Cold Brew Tower. “The Kyoto Cold Brew Tower is the traditional way to make cold brew in Japan Overall, Sake Dojo fuses the Western and Eastern processes of creating great alcohol and signature dishes with a novel twist. www.sakedojola.com

LA COFFEE FESTIVAL

F

DEBUTS IN DTLA

or the first time, DTLA will experience the landmark coffee event that has already taken over London and New York. Making its West Coast debut, Ladies and Gents... the first Los Angeles Coffee Young has already hosted the popular festival around the Festival.

D

TLA Hotels are now preparing for a sea of people from all over the world for LA Coffee Fest. Taking place November 9th–11th at Downtown LA’s Magic Box @ The Reef, the weekend-long event will feature exceptional coffee, incredible local food, cocktails, live music and art. And what a wise decision to host LA Coffee Fest in DTLA.

WE LOVE COFFEE in the DT! Whether you’re a beginner, coffee aficionado, self-confessed coffee geek, key industry stakeholder, office worker, stay at home mom, or just an ordinary person who likes coffee and wants to broaden your horizons, LA Coffee Festival is the Alfa and the Omega. Better yet, LA Coffee Fest is about building community, exploring new endeavors and supporting charity.

Downtown Weekly met up with Allegra Group CEO and festival founder, Jeffery Young, to find out what else was brewing.

world, many times, beginning in London in 2011.

Eight years later with max attendance at 35,000 and locations including Amsterdam, New York, London and now Los Angeles, Coffee Fest offers free unlimited coffee tastings, coffee cocktails, lessons, and an all-around celebration of the ecosystem that is the coffee industry. From the farmer to the barista, LA Coffee Fest brings an array of experiences that will bring the industry to life and they’re giving to a list of nonprofits providing clean water to coffee communities and making sure local farmers reap the most benefits when it comes to industry trade deals.

We asked Young, “Why DTLA and not San Fransico?” he responded... “There’s a lot more room to move in, more creativity, more edge and raw energy.

“We are delighted to be bringing the LA Coffee Festival to the West Coast for the first time this year. Los Angeles is a city of culture and creativity, and coffee and food play a huge part in the fabric of LA life.” LA Coffee Festival includes loads of both local and international roasters, as well as coffee clubs in “The Roasters Village,” including, but not limited to: Mooon x Coffee Hall, Bean Brothers, L.A. Coffee Club, Madlab, Bluestone Lane Mondo, Pecora 19º09, DogTown Coffee, Take Flight Coffee and so many more. Local roasters showing off their beans at the festival include; Loit, Coffee Whole, Verve and Cognoscenti Coffee Cafe.

Coffee Battles?

Yes! The three-day festival will also feature an iteration of the leading Coffee Mixologists competition, which debuted at The Amsterdam Coffee Festival in 2016. Here, Coffee Mixologists will join a series of takeovers during the evening, whipping up incredible coffee cocktails for all guests.

In addition to offering delicious street food, coffee cocktails, live music and coffee-inspired art, 10% of profits are donated to Project Waterfall, partnering with NYCbased charity: water to deliver life-changing water projects in coffee-growing regions. Since 2011, Project Waterfall has raised over $1.5 million, bringing clean water to more than 37,000 people across seven countries.

What a difference a cup makes:

Traditional Italian espresso machines are hot in the culture these days but the quest for a great cup of coffee begins and ends with the Barista. It’s hard work that starts early and the pay is just ‘okay’. Yet, the skill of the barista can make the difference between a ‘okay’ and great cup of coffee. As a former chef, Young suggests up to 1-3 years of experience before really getting the sense of the art of coffee making, and to be able to share your grind, the machines, and latte art with the world.

So with so many beans from all over the world to choose from, we had to know... what was Young’s favorite? Costa Rica, Columbia, Brazil, Vietnam? Most coffee is still picked by hand, bean by bean. Like wine, the soil and varieties can bring different flavors. Not only how the bean is prepared but when it’s picked also lend to a great cup of joe. So which was it? We had to know.

His answer... Flat White - first cup in the morning made well with creamy milk and an incredible espresso shot. For coffee connoisseurs and foodies alike, Los Angeles Coffee Fest is bound to give Los Angelenos and global attendees a truly exciting break from the daily grind. The festival is also offering a “Super VIP” ticket package, which offers threeday access to the event, a dedicated VIP entrance, complimentary cocktails from The Coffee Cocktail Bar, and a VIP goodie bag, full of gifts from some of the event vendors, and a copy of the Los Angeles Coffee Guide 2019 book.
