LA ON STRIKE! BUT WHAT DO THE CITY WORKERS WANT?

The bustling metropolis of Downtown Los Angeles found itself in the center of protest Tuesday, August 7, as the demand for fair labor practices and the urgency of addressing critical staffing shortages brought over 11,000 city employees, represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 721, to the streets in protest to what they perceive as unjust treatment by the city administration.

The employees, including sanitation workers, heavy duty mechanics, traffic officers and engineers represented by SEIU Local 721, voted overwhelmingly in May -- with 98% approval -- to authorize an unfair labor practice strike if negotiations stalled.

The all day strike impacted a range of city services. Fired upon the city like a warning shot, of what to come, certain services continued with limited disruption, including public safety, homeless housing emergency services, summer camps, daycare centers, and libraries, others severely affected.

Notably, trash pickup services experienced a day’s delay, and some pools, parks, and animal shelters closed temporarily to the public.

Travelers using Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) were advised to allocate extra time due to potential traffic delays. The strike's ripple effect was felt throughout the city, highlighting the vital role that city workers play in the daily lives of Angelenos.

At the heart of the strike is the SEIU Local 721's call for fair labor practices and immediate action to address staffing shortages. The union alleges that the city has failed to approach the staffing crisis with the necessary urgency, leaving many essential departments severely understaffed. In particular, the sanitation department alone has over 900 open positions, and other city departments also face numerous vacancies. Job application processing is hampered by understaffing, leading to delays of up to six months for applicants, who often seek alternative employment opportunities due to the prolonged waiting period. Union members emphasize that the urgency lies not just in filling positions, but in addressing the toll on workers who are subjected to mandatory

overtime, preventing them from spending time with their families.

Negotiations between the city and the SEIU Local 721 have hit a roadblock, further fueling the strike. The union had ratified a one-year agreement with the city in November 2022, with the expectation that negotiations would continue in early 2023. However, the city allegedly reneged on this commitment, leading the union to file an unfair labor practice claim.

The workers' demands encompass improved wages, benefits, and a resolution to the stafficrisis that has strained various city departments.

It's important to note that while city workers assert their rights and seek better working conditions, the city administration has a responsibility to balance these demands with the fiscal realities of taxpayers. Mayor Karen Bass emphasized the importance of protecting city finances and ensuring essential services while respecting the needs of city workers saying, “As Mayor, my job is to ensure the people of Los Angeles are served and safe, that the city finances are protected and that city workers — the backbone of our economy — are respected and treated fairly.”

It was back to work on Wednesday for the 11,000 city workers. Back to work and back to the negations drawing board for city administration Vs the union. The LA City strike is the first in 15 years and serves as a reminder of the critical role that city workers play in the functioning of a bustling urban center and the delicate balance between meeting their demands and maintaining the city's overall stability.

The annual Nisei Week Festival held in Downtown Los Angeles has always stood as a testament to the enduring legacy of Japanese and JapaneseAmerican culture.

With a history dating back to 1934, this weekend long celebration has become one of the most beloved cultural events in the United States, captivating thousands of attendees each year.

This year, at the heart of this grand festival lies the Little Tokyo Street Fair, an exquisite showcase of artisan wares presented by Bozu LA and Kiosk Boys.

Transforming Weller Court into a treasure hunt of Japanese culture, souvenirs, and heartfelt mementos, from custom clothing to enchanting handcrafted BOZU potted plants, the Little Tokyo Street Fair enriches the Nisei Week experience with an abundance of artistic expressions and a celebration of hard work, dedication, and the spirit of community.

Inside Weller Court visitors will find a tri-level utopia of food and entertainment establishments and captivating tourist attraction known as "tunnel of lights".

Upon entering and exiting the court, Little Tokyo Street Fair will showcases a cluster of 10 by 10 kiosks operated by a talented list of independent artisans. These artisans are not only known to the neighborhood but have also earned their reputation through the fair's long-standing tradition, taking place every other month.

Each kiosk is a treasure trove of cultural wonders, making Weller Court a must-visit destination for those seeking a genuine and authentic Japanese experience.

Co-founders The Kiosk Boys describe their one-of-a-kind custom clothing items found at the fair as a blend urban fashion with elements of art and musical influences. Their creations are a true reflection of the modern Japanese aesthetic, drawing inspiration from both traditional roots and contemporary trends. The result is an exquisite fusion of artistic expression and style that resonates with attendees, leaving them in awe of the seamless blend of the old and the new.

Meanwhile, Bozu LA offers a chance to embrace Downtown's most popular good luck charm - the handcrafted BOZU potted plant. These tiny plants are carefully crafted to match individual personalities, making them a heartwarming and cherished memento of the Nisei Week festivities.

The Little Tokyo Street Fair prides itself on showcasing a diverse range of vendors, each offering their own distinctive products and cultural creations.

Visitors can explore the fair’s journey of craftsmanship as they peruse booths such as Honey Gem Drops, Canyon Collection, From Flowers, She's Two Crafty, Liz's Craft Shop, Mini Katana the Sugar Witch, and many others. These artisans add a personal touch to their offerings, reflecting the passion they have for their craft and their love for the Little Tokyo community.

GO ARMENIA! AT GARO'S DELI

Garo’s Deli is one such restaurant that has been a staple in the Historic St. Vincent Alley for over 33 years.

DK, the current owner, has been running the deli for the past three years after it was passed down to him by his cousin.

Garo’s Deli is known for the authentic flavors of delicious breakfast and lunch menus. What do you call return customers after 30 years? Family.

Garo’s opens at 8:30 am for breakfast and usually greets regulars sitting outside, chatting, and enjoying their meals. These long-term friends are joined by fresh faces to discuss the day’s current events and catch up on each other’s lifestyles.

For breakfast, they partake in such items as bagels with cream cheese and jam, omelets, exotic teas, and traditional Simit Bagels.

Lunchtime sees an influx of locals and tourists. Tourists from around the world seek out their popular sandwiches include pastrami, turkey, ham, salami, Soujouk Armenian sausage, and Tuna, Grilled Chicken and Steak Salads.

The deli also serves daily Chicken Noodle and Lentil Soup, along with various beverages including coffee, tea, and soft drinks. And of course, no deli would be complete without a dessert such as the best baklava!

Everybody’s Talking about Garo’s New Habibi Kebabs!

Garo’s now offers their tasty grilled Lula Kebab, Beef Filet Kebab and Chicken Breast Kebab, all marinated in house fresh every day and served with a side of hummus, rice, and mixed vegetables.

Garo’s offers Indoor and outdoor seating as well as an indoor TV room where diners can come, order food and enjoy lunch and Soccer. YNWA!

Recently, Garo’s obtained a beer and wine license, which DK says has been another huge hit with customers. Although alcohol cannot be consumed on the premises, there is more than enough to purchase and take home.

Garo’s Deli also offers catering services for small and large events. DK is constantly working on the menu, adding new items and tweaking old ones to perfection. The deli is hoping to make the outdoor seating permanent, but there may be some struggles and some worries about the new SoCal gas regulations.

Despite this, Garo’s Deli remains a beloved spot in the community, serving delicious food and providing a space for people to gather and enjoy each other’s company.

The cobblestone median divides two sides of a small street lined with various shops and restaurants, with a historical charm that cannot be missed.

Just added to the menu – Garo’s New Shish Kebabs. Locals are raving about them, sending the deli lots of positive reviews and feedback since the very first bite.
