orn in Santa Cruz County, California, Ambrosia grew up on a strawberry farm next to the ocean in a small harbor town called Moss Landing, 2 hours south of San Francisco, but ended up moving to San Francisco in 2001.

Ambrosia stays busy with charitable works; recently performing for several charities, in both San Francisco and LA that benefit AIDS research. Last summer she helped raised money for the purchase of 100 dresses for girls to wear to their high school proms. Ambrosia plans to travel in the near future. t’s been over two years since Emmanuel and Nicolas opened PLEASE DO NOT ENTER, the first year spent on an upper floor of the Historic PAC Mutual Building (by appointment only), the second inside a storefront just north of 6th and Olive. Emmanuel, a interior designer by trade, and Nicolas, with a background in real estate, both from France, quickly established a reputation for satisfying the needs of the curious. Warding off none with their facetious warning, instead becoming hosts to a steady flow of clientele constantly amused with their rare designs, art works and private collections. Private collections they now make available to the public. Please do not expect their space to be cluttered with designer labels or cliché objects of mass production. Please Do Not Enter doesn’t dwell on the trendy, instead they make the trends, sharing the works of the edgy and brilliantly-talented who need a platform, bringing artists from Europe and Asia, inviting only the work of the most desirable up and coming artisans who supply them with designs they love. It’s almost as though the two, who have been collecting art and design for over 15 years, decided to pack the artists and designers they loved and collected and bring them in a suitcase to Downtown. Explaining their motivations, “Lets bring what we like and see if people like it…and if we’re able to share it with more and more people...maybe these people will have the same experience as we had,” said Nicolas. Yes, Emmanuel and Nicolas, Downtown thanks you for sharing, as the space is adorned with Downtown’s most interesting vendible’s, which double as conversational pieces. Part curator, part storyteller, Nicolas holds a conversation well, conveying with each piece its motivation as a testament to the artisan’s natural intelligence. Being able to exhibit these wares and love for the city is what truly drives the two. Yet, on any given day the look of the space may change. Hosting gallery receptions with the focus on the artists or private parties one week, and the next, maybe the focus changes to fashion, accessories, novelty items or home décor. Ultimately however it is up to the buyer to choose whether or not they have entered a design, fashion, boutique, or art gallery.

Please do not choose, as Please Do Not Enter seeks to be admired for its ability to morph itself into an unique experience with each visit. It’s obvious to the owners that having to choose may not only limit our expectations but that the buyers attentions come in as many different varieties as the products they offer. So much so, there are instances when some may completely concentrate on one aspect of the store, such as clothing while unconsciously passing by the other offerings, and vice versa.

FAKOSHIMA AT PLEAsE DO NOT ENTER Upon entering, one should allow a deep breath and the time it takes to fully absorb the store’s complete surroundings. Destiny, the store’s statuous mistress, and the store’s owners, Nicolas and Emmanuel, there to greet you, are all immaculate in their abilities to make visitors feel welcome. Important to note, these fine fellows of Please Do Not Enter, not only fell in love with the potential of Downtown, they fell in love with it, the way it was, know its complete history and relish in its urban spirit. Although they are anxiously awaiting its inevitable transformation into an exonerated modern day urban metropolis, where people have access to an endless array of commerce, art and culture, they also understand and have a steady appreciation for the stories Los Angeles has to tell. “Past is important, it’s part of your roots. Because of the history [Los Angeles}, this place is made even more amazing,” said Emmanuel. Please Do Not Enter are monthly participants of the Downtown Art Walk, and community sponsors of the DTLA PROUD Fest. They enjoy the opportunities these cultural festivals bring, lending to a wid-

It is with greater pleasure they will now host their own resident artist in what they call a dream project, which incorporates their love for art and the history of Los Angeles. Please do not forget about the LA River. The filming industry has made the entire world familiar with the LA RIVER, and soon the future will bring mass changes to its landscaping as it is slated to be revamped. Before the process begins, the artist Nicolas has chosen to host from Europe this fall will seek out unique locations and produce 100 replicas of the river’s textures, objects or resources and duplicate them in a display of usable objects that will allow all of us a piece of Los Angeles history. In reality, the LA River is one of the only rivers in the world people aren’t readily allowed to frequent. As forbidden as an ancient tomb, or temple, buyers will soon be able to raid the river and return with some of its most interested archeological memories recreated at PLEASE DO NOT ENTER.

ack before Art Walk and at what Andres Rigal calls, “the tip” of gentrification, there were only a few venues open for summer fun. Besides The Standard, swimming pools were a luxury that DTLA just didn’t have, and then he gave us SummerTramp.

here year was 2010. Andres Rigal wanted to produce a summer party but was having a hard time finding an available pool. Tired of the pretentious pool scene in Los Angeles where they may have people, a body of water, music, and the appropriate spirits, still Rigal felt something about the experience didn’t convince him it was intended to be fun.

“I asked myself, what happened to celebrating summer? So, after some deep thought, I decided to pick up the torch and produce the official anti-LA pool party aka parking lot above ground pool party with a inflatable waterslide. A party for everyone.” At an early age when most of his friends were idolizing the latest pop-star or sports figure, Rigal was looking up to nightlife luminaries and impresarios like Steve Rubell and more recently, Brent Bolthouse as these, to him, were mythical creatures of the night.

“I remember thinking how for one night these guys would create another world right out of their imaginations. I mean, how cool is that?” Rigal spent years working his way up in the talent agency business at Creative Artists Agency where oversaw live musical tours for acts like Green Day and Katy Perry, but soon found he wasn’t happy. A close friend got him a gig booking at Bardot where he met Luke Nero. It was a match made in hedonistic heaven, and inspired him to throw his most successful event, the saucy outdoor hap, known to most as SummerTramp.

SummerTramp is a celebration of unity within the gay community. When Rigal first produced SummerTramp he was surprised that the LGBTQ scene was so divided. So he intentionally programmed the parties with all sides of Los Angeles, to create a space where everyone could let their hair down, take their

clothes off, be themselves and ultimately raise their freak flag without any judgment. SummerTramp is a place without imaginary lines of East vs. West. A hidden paradise where drag queens flirt with lesbians, bears swim with Cholas, WEHO boys makeout with DTLA queens, daddies canoodle with twinks, brown meets white, meets all the colors of the rainbow, meets gay guys, meets ladies, and everyone leaves excited to come back next month. Oh, if you’re straight, that’s okay too…

”We’re all children of the sun. That’s what I love about it. It’s an amazing mix of people of all stripes and dots celebrating unity & summer TOGETHER.” Today, Andres Rigal is a Nightlife/Special Event Producer and the co-founding member of the DTLA Proud Festival. The PROUD incarnation of SummerTramp will be much larger than it’s original drag mother. The event will be on a giant 16,000 sq ft Astro-Turfed lot in Pershing Square and will have two pools, a giant inflatable shark waterslide, and a massive octopus dry slide, all within the festival. SummerTramp is purposely programmed with the best DJs in Los Angeles, from all corners of nightlife. This is an huge part of the diversity and success of SummerTramp. Each DJ has a chance to spin their own flavor for 1 hour, which keeps the event dynamic, interesting and accessible.

“Ultimately, SummerTramp is the people’s summer party and we try and program it that way.” When Rigal’s not making DTLA wet and wild, he’s working on his other brands like his weekly Saturday night event Commodore at Henry’s in West Hollywood or his monthly events MR. BLACK and EVITA which move around the city to different venues. When taking a break from the monstrous party scenes he helps create, Rigal takes time out to appreciate classic cars, and fancies himself as a huge car nerd. n February 2016, six women walked 100 miles through California’s Central Valley during the world’s largest forced honeybee migration, speaking with farmers and beekeepers to understand, witness, and document the major degrading of the health and immunity of the country’s hives contributing to the 44% loss of bees this past year.

o you know the bee was venerated throughout human history in part because they increased crop yield, allowing big population centers and culture to grow? If we inquire into the bee, or even take a few minutes to observe one in its work, it’s possible to be humbled by the miracle of them, and it’s possible to find the inspiration to support the bees. Whether that means buying local honey, supporting organic farming, planting a garden, advocating against neonicotinoid pesticides, or contributing to bee culture, it is all helpful and necessary. -Meesha Goldberg

he exhibit “Equilibrium Rites” is inspired by a performance ritual performed with Meesh’s friends over five days. They walked 100 miles through California’s million acres of almond orchards as 80 billion bees were trucked in from around the country to pollinate. They wanted to create an artwork for the bees and were compelled to enter their world. They wanted to be with them, bear witness to this epic event, document, to talk about the bee crisis, and Meesha’s exhibit of paintings and photographs at the Hive Gallery on 7th and Spring, are a part of that documentation. It was only natural to bring the exhibit to The Hive Gallery because they are so passionate about the bees!

“Somehow calling what we were doing art, and doing what we did as a kind of living art diffused the tension that you’d expect to arise if outsiders were walking the perimeter of your land with an underlying critique of your farming practices, and your livelihood.” Within the groups conversations about the bees and how essential they are, people often became enchanted by the message finding themselves cheering on the friends and wanting to become more involved.

The Hive Gallery show runs from August 6th-26th and includes paintings as well as photographs of the walk by James Stark. co-curated with Nathan Cartwright, it encludes a sister group show called “Honey and Venom,” featuring 20+ artists all creating Meesha Goldberg graduated from art inspired by the bees.
