dtla vegan>> to date or not to date a vegan?

T

o date a vegan or not to date a vegan? That is the question. According to a national Harris Poll it’s estimated that about 3.2% males and 3.5% females in the US are vegetarian. Vegans make up a smaller percentage. When it comes to dating it’s often a concern for a vegan or vegetarian to find someone that lives the same lifestyle. The pool of eligible partners is already limited based on your compatibility, but once you add another factor like veganism it limits your selection even more and it can seem like finding love is nearly impossible.

monuments in time>> angel’s flight the twisted love affair of olivet and sinai

D

uring a recent filming of La La Land, Olivet and Sinai, once Downtown’s favorite couple and long time workers of Angel’s Flight were finally back working together again. If only briefly, as LA’s near vertical funicular re-opened for a single day to accommodate the filming of the Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, the two proved that absence does indeed make the heart grow fonder. The two, sharing the splendor of the film, no doubt made it easier for the actors to portray their roles as committed lovers. Yet, history has shown Olivet and Sinai haven’t always been as cordial with their guests and when these two angels fight their candescent romance can prove deadly.

S

inai and Olivet first met at Angel’s Flight back in 1901. Back then, Bunker Hill was considered one of LA’s au courant neighborhoods, the place to live and be seen. At that time, they were the toast of the town hosting parties for lovers like themselves, LA’s leading citizens and almost anyone else who wanted to enjoy a pick me up when traveling between the streets of Olive and Hill. Side by side they kept the excitement of Angel’s Flight alive. Originally called the Los Angeles Incline Railway, the flight paid homage to its creator, Colonel James Ward Eddy, who resided on Bunker Hill at the time. Eddy, who knew Abraham Lincoln, was an officer in the battalion that protected Washington D.C. during the Civil War. Eddy had personally financed the construction of Angel’s Flight and were Sinai and Olivet favorite supporters. There were two boarding platforms, both painted bright vermilion. One located at Olive Street, the other located at Hill Street with an archway entrance with a hand-painted sign that read, “Angels Flight.” In 1952 Olivet and Sinai were happy together creating the perfect balance. Their love was as strong as a cable and they never traveled more than 315 feet away from each other.

photo courtesy angels flight.org It is estimated that Angel’s Flight has carried more passengers per mile than any other railway in the world, over a hundred million in its first fifty years. In 1962, LA’s Cultural Heritage Board, proclaimed Angel’s Flight a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. It was Official, Olivet and Sinai would be married in the pages of history forever. Then in 1969, their home of almost 70 years succumbed to modern development. Bunker Hill was designated for urban renewal, which resulted in the relocation of around 22,000 people to make way for commercial skyscrapers and posh apartment complexes. Angel’s Flight was taken apart and Olivet and Sinai were forced to move into a tiny private home at The Bandstand, which what compared to what the two had once known must have felt like a crypt. For 27 years the two found themselves without any romance or thrill rides. Life had definitely changed and it took a heavy toll on their relationship. Then in February of 1996, Angel’s Flight was restored and put back in operation. However, it was placed one-half block south of the original location and Olivet and Sinai never really got used to the new site. They argued about almost everything on a daily basis for over 5 years. Then one day, Sinai just snapped When it was all over one person was left dead and seven others were injured. Angel’s Flight was shut down, and Sinai was sentenced to numerous therapies, and forced to endure a ten year incarceration, but was finally released in March of 2010. Together again, all seemed well. Angel’s Flight was back in operation, this time leading Downtown tourists to and from destinations such as Grand Central Market, Grand Performances, any many others. Once again Downtown had its favorite short cut. But in September of 2013, Olivet and Sinai began what would be their last public display of discernment. Tired of living, tired of fighting, and missing the days of their youth the two decided to jump off the tracks. No one was hurt but authorities concluded there were just too many flaws in their relationship. Still, Angel’s Flight remains part and parcel of LA’s historical heritage. Hopefully one day the two will make up and share the joy they once felt with the lives of others. Let us hope the on screen passions of Gosling and Stone helped the two rekindle the romance and magic they once shared.

STILL LIFE WITH TWO OWLS MOCA Grand L.A. artist Jonas Wood painted Still Life With Two Owls in 2014. With his characteristically flat, sunny way, he depicts shelves full of plants and pots. Some of the pots are the plain old terracotta kind you’d find at Home Depot. Other colorful, patterned ones look handmade. Sky-blue light shines through the shelves on the right, while those on the left could be in some dimly lit closet. Two pots on the darker side are shaped and painted to look like blinged-out, redcheeked owls. In time for the holidays, Wood scaled up this painting and applied a slightly altered, vinyl version of it to MOCA. 250 S. Grand Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90012

falling in love with DTLA

T

here’s no doubt in the minds of the Historic Core that the Spring Arcade needs love. Once a highly popular flea market laced corridor of friendly immigrants, the venue closed with revitalizing efforts to be reopened with the promise of a busy natural lit passageway filled with aromas from Spring to Broadway.

I

t’s been a bit of a process, but there is light at each end of this tunnel. With more eateries opening this year, the Spring Arcade is destined to join the ranks of other successful Downtown food hubs such as the Grand Central Market, LA LIVE and Fig at 7th. Indeed this will eventually happen, although some have given up, packed up their sausages and moved on, still others see the promise and remain faithful to the building’s French baroque arched corridor, home to apartment dwellers above, and a handful of healthy food sources below. Allowing prospective shop owners to see the potential and leading the way as the first shop to christen the building’s reopening in September of 2013, was a tiny well-decorated crepe café brought to Downtown by an owner with a heart of gold who would later become a beacon of love, for the lonely palettes everywhere. And love was hard! With the noise of construction, lack of security, free parking, and less marketing efforts put into the Spring Arcade venture compared to other Downtown food hubs, the only way the tiny crepery could have survived was to gain a solid reputation for

being completely devoted to serving Downtown the best tasting crepe. And it did. And still does to this day, three years later. But don’t take our word for it. It’s no secret romance. Crepes Sans Frontieres has won the hearts of Downtown. Voted BEST CREPE three years in a row, with rave reviews on Yelp, and a following of fans that would die for the crepes coming out of this place, owner Ruth Hudin is the pioneer crepery-cupid the Spring Arcade Building needed, striking downtown hearts with her delicately prepared sweet and savory love galletes.

To add to the splendor, Ruth’s crepes are a perfect match for all kinds of Angelinos. For instance, for the vegan, or gluten sensitive, Ruth creates a gluten free organic dark brown buckwheat crepe, filled with fresh vegetables. For the seafood lover, she serves wild caught smoked salmon, and savory crepes specials topped with shrimp during the popular weekend brunch. New to the menu, starting from 11am, Tuesday thru Friday, Ruth presents a crêpe with eggs, bacon topped with real maple syrup. For a steak through the heart try La Crepe Liberte with Angus beef. S

uper Bowl LI(51) at NRG Stadium in Houston on Sunday, February 5th, surpassed all expectations, it featured the biggest comeback in Super Bowl history, as the New England Patriots overcame a 25 pt. deficit to shock the Atlanta Falcons, 34-28 in Overtime. Missing our prediction by 1 point and setting Super Sunday to say the least, 31in fact. The first Super Bowl in 51 years to go to OT, and the fifth time the duo of Belichik and Brady hoisted the shiny Vince Lombardi trophy.

P

atriots Quarterback Tom Brady was spectacular, besides throwing for yet another record, 466 yards, he past San Francisco 49ers legend Joe Montana and Pittsburgh Steelers Hall Of Famer Terry Bradshaw, by winning his fifth Super Bowl. Solidifying Brady as the greatest Quarterback of all-time. The four-time Super Bowl MVP set single-game Super Bowl records for completions (43), passes (62), passing yards (466) and career marks for appearances (7), completions (207), passes (309), passing yards (2,071) and touchdown passes (15). Brady also tying the record for Super Bowl victories, equaling former Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers defensive end Charles Haley’s total of five rings. Bill Belichick set head coaching records for Super Bowl appearances (7) and victories (5). The Atlanta Falcons soared out of the locker room, their offense was crisp, their young defense wasn’t daunted by the Pats’ history in the slightest, including a 82 yd. Pick-six courtesy of Robert Alford. Late in the third quarter, the Falcons were in the driver’s seat leading 28-3. The Patriots finished Super Bowl LI with 31 unanswered points.

The city hasn’t been torched so painfully since the Civil War when General Sherman burnt Atlanta to the ground. This loss will haunt the Falcons, with the Patriots capitalized on poor clock management and dubious play calling and head scratching calls by Falcons Offensive Coordinator, Kyle Shanahan. Although their running game was effective, averaging 6 yards per carry, they inexplicably abandoned the run. MVP Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan struggled down the stretch, first fumbling the ball after a sack. Unfortunately, this trend of blowing leads has plagued him throughout his brilliant career. The next mistake proved fatal. Holding onto a 28-20 edge in the 4th quarter, Ryan heaved the pigskin to the sideline where Wide Receiver Julio Jones made a spectacular tight rope catch. The ball rest on the Patriots 22 yd. line, a field goal would have salted the game, putting them up by two scores. Their overly aggressive strategy backfired-Ryan was sacked than the Falcons compounded their error by getting flagged for holding. Out of field goal range, Atlanta was forced to punt, giving Brady one final opportunity to tie the game. New England drove 91 yards down the field to even the score at 28 all. While Wide Receiver Julian Edelman made perhaps the greatest catch in Super Bowl history. At midfield, Brady’s pass was deflected, Edelman dove as the ball bounced off a Falcons leg. Edelman somehow managed to snag the ball a millisecond before hitting the ground. X-factor Running Back James White scored three touchdowns, caught 14 receptions, for 110 yards. In Overtime, the Patriots won the coin toss and marched down the field for the inevitable score. White darted to the corner of the end zone, before cutting back and stretched the ball across the chalk goal line before his knees hit the ground. Walk off TD! Super Bowl LI was one for the ages.
