It’s hard to say exactly how old print advertising actually is, but despite any threat of digital media, the prowess of print advertising has survived as the number one way to brand your name and reach potential customers. Today, as it was hundreds of years ago, grocery stores and newsstands still carry thousands of newsprint publications world-wide. ART WALK NEWS offers both digital media and newsprint, allowing it to keep its nostalgic effect, give your eyes a break from the screen and offer a souvenir for ART lovers to take home. As commissioned artists, event planners, photographers and journalists, publishing a newsprint publication and offering incentives to ART WALK visitors to BUY ART is a great way to support the arts, document the events and help our advertisers reach their demographic. ART WALK NEWS IS WORLD WIDE. With 30,000 new readers a year from all over the world and twice recognized by the City of Los Angeles, ART WALK NEWS has become a trusted source for news and entertainment. ART WALK NEWS has been publishing an informative guide for ART WALK attendees, complete with comprehensive gallery maps, special event information, dining suggestions, product discounts, interesting stories, comics, puzzles, photojournalism, contests and eye-catching graphics since 2009. Please join us in our endeavors so we may spread this publication to more events in Southern California.

#ARTWALKNEWS “The last 10 years has brought upon a rash of self-guided ART WALK events now taking place in almost every city across the nation. Taking the stuffy sales staff and “hushed” gallery experience and turning it into more of a festive atmosphere, ART WALKS expose thousands of people to new experiences in an artistic wave of creative influence.” LA MAGAZINE – JULY 2014 “Downtown’s Art Walk turns the streets into an artistic carnival. Here on Gallery Row -- bounded by Main and Spring streets from 2nd to 9th streets -- the scene is as eclectic as the people it has attracted: haircuts being given on sidewalks; saxophone melodies wafting through the smoggy air; a retrofitted 1940s school bus shuttling attendees to off-site galleries. Inspired by the scene, artists let the environment dictate the imagery as they paint on makeshift canvases taped to chain-link fences.” LA TIMES - FEBRUARY 2009 “Pomona may be a king among men–when it comes to art walk. With smiling faces, crowds that make the air sticky and food trucks that will make your mouth water, Pomona is where it’s at.” INLAND EMPIRE WEEKLY - JULY 2013 ART WALK NEWS has been publishing an informative guide for ART WALK attendees, complete with comprehensive gallery maps, special event information, dining suggestions, product discounts, interesting stories, comics, puzzles, photojournalism, contests and eye-catching graphics since 2009.

CREATION:

for artwalks

Everyone in the world is on a quest to experience the most from the universe and all things in it. Each day we embark on a perpetual path to collect those experiences in hopes that we can eventually lend them to our long list of life fulfilling moments.

tive visitor hubs, turning the entire region into one festive party which purifies the spirit of the neighborhood and lends to the stimulation of the local economy.

What will you watch and comprehend today? What will you eat? What music will you listen to? Who will you touch? Will you discover something new? And what will be the end all be all?

So many different people from all ethnic backgrounds, young and old have no trouble bonding with the energy of the night and over all feeling of being united under aesthetics.

A discovery of Self: ART WALK is Sight, Sound, Taste and Excitement.

For artists, the night proves just as profitable as collectors are everywhere during an Art Walk. While some may be well versed in the arts, its likely the Art Walk will help mold plenty of future collectors as well.

ART: the conscious use of the imagination in the production of objects intended to be contemplated or appreciated while at the same instance being totally subjective in a person’s mind rather than the external world. What ever you want it to be - voila it is, and pretty much means, anything goes, but also, that it’s not to be rushed or easily forgotten.

WALK: to go on foot

for pleasure or exercise; during an ART WALK is like taking a stroll on the Avenue of Creative Expression, mixing and mingling with artists and curators indoors or struttin’ your stuff outdoors in high fashion with hundreds sometimes thousands of your fellow open-night-air explorers.

Gallery exhibits, fashion shows, live music, local eateries, and mobile pop-ups create individual artistic-interac-

Independent artists

at art parks and pop ups may sell art for less than hundreds of dollars while galleries with well represented artists, who are supported by their collectors, may go skies the limit.

Collectors may be the type that collect a particular style such as photography or abstract, or just attached to a particular artist. There may be buyers seeking to redecorate the office, or loft, or that impulse buyer who finally got exposed to a place in their mind they thought they would never know. These are the types of thought provoking pieces you can purchase at Art Walks. At Art Walk, the artists and art institu-

stays the main focus of the night’s festivities. Art Walk is an exploration into the 5 senses; sight, touch, taste, feel, smell and sound. Bottom line__ its good for the soul.

Controversial street photographer Scott Reyes and others will be showing a pop-up exhibit entitled, “Buckshots LA” at the Regent Theater on Winston and Main. Reyes who is known for taking some of the best urban photos of DTLA with or without permission may have encountered some dangerous peril exploring the underground tunnels of DTLA or while high on roof tops but his efforts just earned him an article in LA MAGAZINE, so he must be doing something right. JOSEPH LEE “B O Y at the grown-ups table” Acrylic 36x48in I am a self-taught Los Angeles based painter. Growing up, my family couldn’t afford to send me to art school so I did the next best thing which was to just work on my own. Having moved to Los Angeles 4 years ago to pursue an acting career, I didn’t know exactly to how mend both of my interests in performance and visual arts. I found that through the art of portraiture. I was able to incorporate my fascination of human behavior with different mediums to capture the complexities of the human face. My work bleeds between realism and the abstract. I believe most of us live our lives somewhere within that space. I’ve been blessed to show my work throughout the city as well as recently winning the Golden Award at the Landmark building in New York’s Chelsea district. In terms of future goals, I don’t really have one. I follow my mother’s logic, which is to “keep your head down and just work!” FMI: Josephleeart.com

THE UNCAGED HEART OF JENNIFER KORSEN JENNIFER KORSEN is

“It affected every bit of who I am, and a lot of the visual images I was faced with back then stayed with me. Interior anatomy is something everyone can relate too but also something that is personal and can make us very uncomfortable because it reminds us of our own mortality. I like that. It affects people, and there is comfort in realizing that we are all just thaese meat machines running around, not knowing what’s going on, but somehow convinced that we do.”

one of those elusive people you meet on occasion who was actually born in Los Angeles.

“I’m a third generation Angeleno, so the city and all its different facets are a big part of my day-today inspiration. I have been drawing, painting, and crafting as far back as I can remember.”

The heart is the great equalizer that most people connect to, but for very individual reasons. The full emotional spectrum—love, hate, vulnerability, strength, connection, life, death, pleasure, and pain—can all be recalled just by looking at the heart. To Korsen, it is the most powerful symbol.

Korsen’s Great Uncle was an illustrator for the LA Times and her Aunt dabbled in art, but creativity wasn’t really valued or encouraged in her family as much as more stable and traditional pursuits. She never considered art as a real career option or something she should study until she found herself immersed in it and realized she wouldn’t be happy doing anything else. So she dove in.

Korsen is currently on year three of a residency at The Hive Gallery, but she’s also shown all over Los Angeles—in galleries such as LabArt, Gabba Gallery, Copro Gallery, and many others as well as group shows in Las Vegas, Portland, Seattle, and New York. She also had her art displayed at Brighton Sussex Medical College in the UK and was featured in a show in Frankfurt Germany that focused on art in Los Angeles. One piece was chosen as the design for the Frankfurt Artwalk poster that month with pictures of her work on posters throughout German shops and clubs.

Korsen says she enjoys experimenting, and is most comfortable with acrylic, spray paint, mixed media collage, and woodworking. DTLA EBOX - PHOTOS COURTESY OF JENNIFER CORSEN

“Putting up my work in public has been one of the most rewarding experiences as an artist. There is something powerful about becoming part of the landscape of the city where so many people can see and interact with it.”

Korsen’s next show is “Cross My Heart,” which opens Friday, February 13th at Stone Malone Gallery on Melrose Avenue. Followed by a few other shows and events this

CAGED HEART

In 2012, Korsen said she was starting to feel trapped in the small gallery/pop-up scene so she started putting up stickers of her LA Heart image. The attention they got was instant and caught her off guard. She quickly progressed to posters, then installations and murals.

n 2004 she moved to an artist community in Northridge called Das Bauhaus. For years she was there, part of a constantly-evolving community of artists and musicians that at times felt like family and at times felt like a frat house. It was exactly what she needed and it was while living there that she started seeing herself as more of an artist and gained the confidence to show some of the art that she had been creating.

‘Night On Broadway’ took over downtown LA for its annual freeto-the-public street bash on the last day of January this year.

For its annual ‘Night On Broadway’ event, downtown LA polished Broadway and lit up its seven famous theaters ONCE AGAIN for the first time in 50 years. Thousands of Angelenos rammed Broadway’s closed-off street and sidewalks, and enjoyed 5 hours of moonlight partying complete with food trucks, performance artists, galleries, flash mob, and free haircuts.

ominican born Ariel Vergez, the mind of BlackBrain, was raised in Miami, Florida. Inspired by the heroes of his youth including Dali & DaVinci he pursued art at a young age which led to getting accepted into one of the nation’s best art and design based high schools, Design and Architecture Senior High. His raw talents were given form and were later matured at the Cleveland Institute of art.

The work combines the edginess of street art/graffiti culture and traditional fine art with the use of aerosol paints, wheat paste, marker techniques, acrylic and oil paints — on paper, on wood, on walls, on racecars.

LONDON COMES TO PAPILLION

GET PAID - BE A HERO!

London-based artist Lakwena Maciver (Adidas, American Eagle Outfitters, Converse), presents a cross between homemade street signs, and commercial logos and personal emblems. These big, “jaunty” paintings each with text in raised letters are inspired by the human instinct for adornment and embellishment. “Their use and power as a means of communication, much of Lakwena’s work is an exploration of how this decorative instinct is outworked in popular culture and within the urban environment.” The show is held in conjunction with the Leimert Park Art Walk held every last Sunday of the month. comiconoscope Aquarius (January 20-February 18):

How awesome it must be to be an Aquarius in the Age of Aquarius??? Look deep within yourself and you will find you’re most like Stan Lee’s “Amazing Spider Man” (1962). You enjoy time alone as does the web slinging orphan, and find yourself often having to deal with overly needy partners or jealous opponents who want to capture you and put you in a box...But can you blame them? You never let anyone down, and your super strength and agility, makes it easy for others to want to cling to you or be trapped inside your web. You’re best stuck with Gemini, and Aquarius. Use your Spidey sence when it comes to Gemini and Sag.

Pisces (February 19-March 20):

Like Joe Simon and Jack Kirby’s Captain America (1941). This month will bring a major transformation, except this time it will affect your love life. The change will be beneficial for your emotional growth and unleash a super enhanced new version of yourself. Power conflicts are likely but your heart will be like an indestructible shield protecting you from any foe. When the transformation is complete you will be able to handle any situation without feeling emotionally drained. In the end you will be as calm as a baby and as cold as ice. Your strongest allies are Taurus, Cancer and Virgo. Get ready for war with Scorpio, Gemini and Sag.

Gemini (May 21-June 20):

With feelings running so deep and dueling personalities to handle them, you have to feel like Molly Mayne aka Harlie Quin (1940) never really sure why you are doing things for love but still having loads of fun while you’re doing them. While some see you as a devoted spouse others may see you as a mandolin-playing super-villain with diabolic plans to trip them up. You’re all laughs with Aries, Leo and Libra but your plans are foiled with Virgo and Pieces.

Cancer (June 21-July 22): It’s Cat Scratch Fever for you this month dear Cancer, like Cat Woman, created by Bob Kane (1940) your known for having complex love-hate relationships. She’s a whip-carrying burglar with a taste for high-stake thefts and you’re a nurturing intuitive, who’s imaginative yet shrewd. Still with love, for both of you, curiosity kills the cat when you’re able to find that one person who can make you really purrrrr. You’re living it up with all 9 lives with Taurus, Virgo and Scorpio but Libra and Aries are your catnip...be careful!

Square Enix video game Tomb Raider (1996) about “an adventurer who ventures into ancient, hazardous tombs and ruins around the world” is pretty similar to how your love life has been so far dear Aries. You’re as determined to find true love as you are charming. This month will give you confidence and a boost of energy levels to help you seek out people that you find quite pleasurable. You’ll find a treasure chest with Gemini, and Sag. Booby traps are set by Leo and Aquarius.

Taurus (April 20-May 20):

Remember Takashi Nishiyama and Hiroshi Matsumoto’s Street Fighter character Sakura Kasugano (1987)? Like her, others only notice you for what you do--and not for what you don’t do--so keep it positive and keep creating a better and more lovable Taurus. Now is also a great time to earn recognition for past efforts. Take charge of matters of the heart because love is what keeps you the most energetic, cheerful, and positive, especially when it comes to the art of love and war. You’re ready to put your heart on the frontlines for Cancer, Virgo and Capricorn but may end up doomed on the battlefield with Libra and Aries.

Scorpio (October 23-November 21):

Oh why are you so mean Scorpio? Well, because, Scorpio is the astrology sign of extremes and intensity. Just like Storm (1975), by artist Dave Cockrum, a witch-priestess with white hair, blue eyes, and a natural gift for sorcery, when love strikes you, it creates a powerful whirlwind of udder and complete drama. You fly high and don’t care about the risk. Just be careful that when the storm is over and you finally come down that everything that was magical about the relationship hasn’t been washed up, swept away, soggy, or just plane flat out broken. You’re as cool as a summer’s breeze with Cancer, Virgo and Cap but you’re anger grows as relentless as a hurricane with Leo and Aquarius.

Sagittarius (November 22-December 21): What’s more powerful than Honesty...Trustworthy. Protection & Loyalty? Look Up in the Sky! .... Its a bird...its a plane...its..its..you dear Sag. Like Superman, by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster (1933), you will have much success in your love adventures. You have every power known to man but your most awesome power is your ability to see through any situation when it comes to love quarrels. You almost should wear a cape because you know just what to do, and you’re always right in time to save the romance. Becareful who you give your heart to however, Cancer and Virgo shine like the Sun while Aquarius and Pieces quickly turn into Krytonite.

Libra (September 23- October 22): Leo (July 23 - August 22):

Aries (March 21-April 19):

PG. 18

Jerry Robinson, Bill Finger, and Bob Kane’s, Joker (1940) is one of the most iconic characters in pop culture. Unfortunately Leo, your bright, frothy and beautiful light cannot hold a candle to your Lion’s urge for power and dominance. If you’re not center of attention and getting what you want out of a relationship, you won’t think twice about thinking up a fiendish plot to get out of it, but at least you love the idea of ‘being in love’. Laugh it up Jokie! You’re comedic timing is dead on with Gemini, Libra and Sag but your jokes only get the applaud of crickets and frogs at the show with Scorpio and Taurus.

Virgo (August 23 - September 22): Pikachu of Pokémon created by Ken Sugimori (1996) is the life of the party and like you dear Virgo, there when you need him. Fast, furious, cuddly? and ready to fight for love. This month’s solar eclipse will have you charged up for keeping the electricity in the bedroom. Virgos are very well organized and they aim to please. To attract a Virgo, you’ll need to impress them with lots of facts and details, but once you’ve capture their hearts they’ll be your love pet forever. You’re all cute and cuddly with Aries, Leo and Libra but Sag and Gemini can sometimes give you quite a shock.

Like Goku of Dragon Ball (1984), written and illustrated by Akira Toriyama, your love is one of the most powerful forces on Earth. When you fall in love it’s like a head injury as a child that scrambles your programming, that makes you grow up innocent, pure of heart, and ready to fight for good. Honestly Libra, you’re only weakness is your trusting nature. You’re the first to find the good in a person before others and the first to get heartbroken because of it. Be safe in love out there - it’s not like you have an extinct extraterrestrial Dragon Ball in your pocket to back you up. Your furious use of love energy flows with Gemini, Leo and Sag but you should beam yourself away from Aries and Libra.

Capricorn (December 22-January 19):

We’re not sure if this guy is cosplaying Sheev Palpatine, aka Darth Sidious, from Star Wars or Apocalypse from the X-men, but it really doesn’t matter Capricorn because you can be just as stubborn as both of them when it comes to giving up control in a relationship. Like both evil über-menaces, you respect only those who are strong enough to survive hardships and conflicts, even if you’re the cause of the conflict...And worse ...your silent treatment, definitely like the Emperor, who doesn’t say very much. But, when your love finally does appear, at least we know its part of your ultimate master plan. You’ll contemplate all millennia on how to get to Taurus, or Cancer, but Sag and Libra make you want to destroy the everything and go back to hiding out on the Darkside.

GREG GOULD `“ODDBALL!” Medium: Oil on Canvas Dimensions: 30”x40” 1998 I was born in Los Angeles on March 1st, 1976. I really started showing my artwork back in 1996 - that’s when I started putting art in coffee houses, had my first gallery show in Pasadena, and when I got my first commissioned murals. I’d learned how to use oil paints when I was 13, and from that point it became my favorite medium. These days, however, I have been experimenting with more than just ‘painting’ - everything from 3-D wall hanging mixed media pieces, art videos, and sculptural lamps from mannequin parts. I’ve also been publishing cartoons since 2012. Mainly, I just try to let my creative process evolve and see where it leads. Sometimes ‘experiments’ work, sometimes they fail big time. My work has been shown in galleries from Sydney, Aus., Seattle, Pasadena, and in DTLA. I have been a founding resident of The Hive Gallery since doors opened in 2005, and I have worked with various organizations to make art that has been exhibited at Coachella Music Fest., The Epicenter Music Fest., The Natural History Museum (L.A.), and monthly at The Hive Gallery. Currently, I am collaborating with ‘Designspillz’ & the City of L.A., to make a public piece of art - a painted utility box. I hope to launch my ‘stratosphere project’ this May. With this project, I will launch action figures of ‘Captain Kirk’ & ‘Dr. Spock’ into the stratosphere, shot in HD. Once I retrieve them, I will make art pieces of both figures, and show them with a video of them hovering at the edge of space. FMI: gouldeyecandy.com
