owntown Weekly put on a few extra pounds while on assignment to find the best pizzas in the DT. We checked out the ovens, interviewed top chefs, and even took a pizza dough class to find out just what makes their pizzas some of DTLA’s most popular foods. As hard as we tried, after all the pinching, flipping, pulling and stomping, the pizza we made just couldn’t compare to those on our list of 10 Great Places for the BEST Pizza in DTLA.

The art of pizza making traces back to Naples 997 AD, plenty of time for mankind to experiment and perfect any style of pizza imaginable. Italian immigrants first brought pizza to America by way of Ellis Island, along with special deliveries that may or may not have come with extra red sauce. #Forgetaboutit Lucky for tourism, No. 10 - J.W. Marriott doubles as an original idea pizza making machine, with pizzas pushed to the limit covered with everything from crispy mushrooms to avocado simplicity. In Downtown, pizza is, what pizza does. We take it anyway we can get it and nothing is more special than $2 Tuesday slices at No. 9 Pizzanista. $2 Pizza puts Pizzanista in our Top 10. Cont...pg 10

TLA hotels come with award winning chefs. It’s like a requirement. Introducing Food Chef Network’s No. 7 - Chef Ben Diaz of Luxe City Center who is bound to surprise you with his line up of flat breads which you can enjoy in your suite or at Nixo, Luxe City’s rooftop lounge. Chef Ben serves his gourmet flat bread varieties on a pale wood pizza paddle bringing a nostalgic feel along with the aromas. Yup, the ole’ wooden paddle. Oh, the memories. Really, DTLA enjoys a good presentation and subtle nuances work well with our expectations when it comes to a great dining experience.

BECAUSE AFTER THE PARTY... IT’S THE PIZZA PARTY!
Ever eat a pizza that reminded you so much of New York, you’d swear the Intercontinental Hotel was the Statue of Liberty? Well, that pizza must of had the wrong kind of mushrooms on it...Or the right kind...Just kidding, but we couldn’t resist. The point we are making or missing = DTLA has plenty of New York style pizzas to go round. Shall we begin with New York transplant No. 6 - Prime Pizza, with it’s location in Little Tokyo? Yes, we shall. Prime Pizza bakes fresh on location and enjoys a steady crowd of pizza lovers from open to close. Best of all, they stay open late giving party goers, bands and late night munchers the perfect opportunity to fill up before crashing out or when stocking up the energy they’ll need to party HARDER!!! No 5 - Two Boots Pizza is also from New York, and resembles a New York pizza stand more closely than most of its trendy counterparts in Downtown. Two Boots built its brand as a zany mix of Italy and Louisiana, with titles like “The Dude or the Swamp Witch. One distinguishing ingredient, Two Boots pizza cornbread-bottomed crust, offering an unique crunch to look forward to with each delicious bite. NO 4 - TomGeorge - proves once again that Downtown loves a great pizza fusion. TG is where Italy meets Hungary. Except when you meet these two you’ll be “Hungary” no more... SCOOT A CITY
STILL FOR THE COOL KIDS
T
he future for scooters in DTLA (and elsewhere) looks very bright. In San Francisco and other towns, they’re booming in popularity because of their hip cult following and their tremendous ability for cutting through the congestion of traffic. In DTLA, we know all about traffic. Fortunately, thanks to Scoot a City we can rent a cool new Vespa to beat the gridlock or even take a leisure tour to explore the city and look cool doing it.
Many of the mods rode Vespa scooters and modern Vespas still resemble the basic design and shape of the vintage Vespas the mods rode. The mod subculture rose to a level of prominence which British rock band The Who created their 1973 Quadrofenia album around. But, Vespa was already a recognized style icon prior to the mods and rockers from the film Roman Holiday which starred Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn riding a Vespa in Rome.” Unlike those vintage Vespas though, the modern Vespas Scoot a City rents have automatic transmissions, ABS brakes and fuel injection which makes them easier and safer to ride while also being more reliable. Scoot a City provides reliable, easy to use, environmentally and user-friendly models and most importantly, they’re a lot of fun. It’s important to know that if you want to rent a scooter, you’re going to need to have the appropriate license from your home state, province or country which would allow you to operate the scooter where you live. In most places around the word, that means you must have a special license such as moped, motorcycle or motor-driven cycle license.
Vespa Guided Tours! Recently, Downtown Weekly talked to Scoot a City’s Head Scooterista, Ben Gary, to get the insight of experiencing the city on scoot. Scoot a City offers a collection of modern Vespas to domestic and international tourists as well as advertising and productions companies choosing to navigate the city and promote their companies with one of the world’s biggest style icons.
“It’s part of human nature,” Ben said, “that we seek memorable experiences and adventures in life. It’s not just doing something. We want to do something that’ll stick with us forever.” He’s right. Scooting a city on a Vespa
is completely different than going around in a car or any other kind of transportation.
Scoot a City also offers Vespa guided tours! Currently they offer a Malibu Coast Tour and Hollywood Stars Tour. The tours allow people to experience the best of Los Angeles in a unique and memorable manner.
Special Delivery!
Picking up and dropping off your scooter during your precious vacation time would be wildly inconvenient. That’s why Scoot a City delivers and picks up from your doorstep. “They put in a delivery address and they put in a pickup address and we do the rest.”, says Ben. Better still, Scoot a City may be introducing a new scooter rideshare program to allow customers to activate Scoot a City scooters with a Scoot a City app similar to Bird or Lime, but to use Vespa and other freeway legal motor-scooters that allow customers to travel within greater metropolitan areas in an economical and efficient manner.
That’s all in the future, though. Today’s a good day to take Vespa out for a spin around Angeles. “We have people come in and If Vespas look familiar to you, Los ride them from all over the world,” Ben says. there are cultural reasons for that. “In Visit www.scootacity.com to book your Vespa Britain in the 60’s, you had the mods and and get ready to Start Your Adventure and rockers youth subcultures. Get Around!

Pizza is America’s number one comfort food, and for good reason. Pizza is America’s number one comfort food, and for good reason. It’s one of those dishes we’ve all eaten as far back as we can remember. For children who will soon grow to become adults one thing from childhood will always remain, the thought of pizza as an all around feel good time. That’s Pizza for ya. Making people happy for life. The only thing more comforting than eating pizza may be eating pizza in one of DTLA’s most comfortable laid back establishments otherwise known as No. 3 - Stocking Frame.

No. 2 - Bestia, of course, and yes this pizza is so good - it will bring out the beast in you. It’s big enough for two but too tasty to share. Before you know it, your napkin is full of crumbs, your plate empty, your slices - gone. Where once was a full moon, now just an eclipse with not even a remnant of crust left in view. You howl, then ask for the check, remembering nothing except faint hints of oregano and the sweet taste of Italian decadence. No 1 - Baldoria - Okay, let’s be clear, no one is paying us to say this, although we do offer an extraordinary content marketing option, DTLA Weekly’s number one choice for the most innovative, uninhibited varieties of pizza; from strawberries and chicken to octopus and radicchio cream sauce, Baldoria may just be the best there is in the DT.
