Dear Families & Friends,
Last year’s theme of reflection resonated with us all, as it offered each of us a chance to reflect on what Green Vale and its teachers have meant to us, and to demonstrate our commitment to the School and this community.
For over a century, generations of parents, alumni, and friends have generously given their time, talent, and resources to advance Green Vale’s mission. This past year was no exception, and philanthropy once again proved to be a hallmark. To share some examples:
• The Annual Fund continued to exceed $1M, an extraordinary accomplishment for a school of this size.
• The Fall Gala experienced record fundraising due to robust auctions and an enthusiastic paddle raise.
• Alumni engagement remained strong with several graduates returning to speak with students, young alumni events, a well-attended 70th Reunion, and a highly spirited 2nd Annual Blue vs. Gold Softball Game. (A tradition that is here to stay!)
• The Parents Association elected a fantastic new leadership team who are passionate about community building, volunteerism, and faculty/staff appreciation.
Thank you to all who continually support Green Vale. I am especially humbled by the many past families who have recommitted to the School following a remarkable Centennial. Truly, The Best Endures because of you.

This support also fueled the creation of a Marine Science Steering Committee, which will partner with a leading organization in the field to design a capstone project for Upper School students. In addition to Hailey, the committee will be composed of Head of Upper School Cathy Iannotta, Science Chair Aisha Daley, Upper School Science Teacher Frank Zanone, and Lower School & Kindergarten Science Teacher Kristin John. The committee has already met twice, and exciting developments are underway.

While the graduating Class of 2024 may have been small in size, they certainly made up for it in camaraderie, character, and achievements. On June 11, the 8th Grade graduation ceremony commenced with a procession of faculty, administration, and staff, leading the way for our esteemed 26 graduates. Head of School Dr. Jesse Dougherty extended a warm welcome, setting the stage for the insightful address by the chosen student speaker, Henry Macauley Woodhouse ’24. In a heartfelt speech, Woodhouse reflected on the 8th Grade’s journey at Green Vale, likening their experience to completing a jigsaw puzzle, with each person and experience contributing to their growth. He acknowledged the essential roles played by the head of school, Early Childhood and Lower School directors, teachers, custodians, kitchen staff, security guards, administrators, and parents in shaping their path.
Woodhouse emphasized how the Class of 2024 has matured intellectually, emotionally, and socially, preparing them for the next chapter of high school. He highlighted the importance of carrying forward the lessons learned and memories made, saying, “As we move forward, we need to reflect back on what was great in our last puzzle to bring into our new one.” Faculty speaker Karenn Ressa, Upper School librarian and Green Vale veteran of 27 years, shared her love for birdwatching and drew parallels from Christian Cooper’s experiences to impart valuable life lessons. Graduates took the stage for the full class’ choral performance of “I’ll Always Remember You” by Miley Cyrus, and each graduate’s faculty advisor delivered personalized remarks as diplomas were presented. Dr. Dougherty, in his valedictory address, expressed gratitude to parents, trustees, faculty, and staff for their support and dedication. He celebrated the graduates’ academic and character development, emphasizing John Dewey’s belief in the power of reflection. He praised the graduates for their readiness to face future challenges, encouraging them to keep reflecting, learning, and communicating as they move forward.
