I can't afford to heat our conservatory in winter, so we don't use it. Can you help?

Want the look of a traditional timber window frame with all the advantages of PVCu?

I V t h h

ANSWER It's all down to the heat loss through your conservatory roof. You can fit blinds but the best solution is to replace the roof with a lightweight, fully insulated Guardian™ roof. It will also help to keep your conservatory comfortable during summer.

Home owners often ask us how they can make the most of their home. Today we look at conservatories and the highly rated Guardian™ roof.

The Liniar flush sash window was developed for the more traditional property where the sash needed to be fitted flush into the frame – and which, with foiling, could look just like a timber window.

lass is one of the ultimate materials to illuminate and enhance your home – glints of sunlight are strewn across rooms as natural light leaps from one surface to the next. One of the world’s most prominent fused glass artists, British designer Jo Downs’ handcrafted work is inspired by the coastal setting of her Cornwall galleries. Jo’s range of beautiful giftware includes coasters, bowls, hangings, candle holders and seasonal gifts, alongside her much sought after statement interior pieces such as wall panels and art frames. Jo has also developed her studio to undertake larger architectural and interior projects. Her innovative designs have earned her commissions for cruise liners, hotels, churches and corporate headquarters. She has also created hundreds of private commissions, producing fused glass windows, mirrors, wall panels and other artworks for homes around the world. Her gallery in Ripley has been well received in the community since opening in the village in 2014. Clients

UTOPIA FORGE

MADE IN SURREY

A

t the peak of its profession in the 19th century, the blacksmith was seen as a humble, working man’s profession – a necessary job that prioritised functionality during the industrial revolution. Now, it is seen as something of a niche career path, almost confined to the past. Andy Quirk and the team at Utopia Forge will quickly dispel such notions. Based in Guildford, Utopia Forge create exquisite wrought ironwork and metalwork for public and private commissions, as well as personal pieces of artwork. These creations range from handmade gates and railings through to bespoke sculptural works of art using a large variety of metals and techniques - and the Forge have won numerous awards for their accomplishments. Andy and his team create pieces far beyond that rather Dickensian picture we painted of blacksmiths. For their commissions, Utopia Forge can indeed create a range of functional art work, hot forged and fabricated in a variety of metals. Should either a company or individual wish for a metal creation, the job will be undertaken with aplomb. However, Andy and the team create incredible works of art too.

Looking at Utopia Forge’s striking portfolio, you really do see an astonishing creative range. For a layperson such as this scribe, there are creations that really do boggle the mind - with influences as diverse as fellow Artist Blacksmith Terrence Clark and surrealist painter Salvador Dali, that’s perhaps no surprise. As well as an incredible array of wrought iron fencing, Andy and his team create pieces as diverse as tables, fireplaces, candelabras, staircases and of course sculptures. If you are familiar with Guildford town centre then you’ll know of The Bargeman, the iron sculpture that sits on the bank of the River Wey; that was created by Andy Quirk and Robert Kranenborg back in 2001. Moreover, the gates on the south side of Guildford Cathedral were made by Andy and Robert in 2003 after the originals were stolen. In short, the creations at Utopia Forge hugely transcend the stereotype of the humble blacksmith. Should you have need for incredible metalwork – or indeed you just admire the art form – you really must find out more. Do just that by visiting utopia-forge.com.

B

ased on the outskirts of the pretty market town of Farnham lies bespoke fine furniture maker, Aidan McEvoy’s workshop. Designer and creator of bespoke fine furniture of the very highest quality, McEvoy’s is a name one should become acquainted with. Originally from West Cork in Ireland, Aidan grew up spending time in the family workshop, observing his father (a master carpenter himself) and, by the age of 10, had sold his first piece of furniture – a cabinet made from scrap wood. And his submission for a secondary school wood work assignment? A 15ft land yacht, naturally. Subsequent years of learning and apprenticeships were spent throughout Europe, indulging in the differing techniques and skills used on the continent. Then having spent time in the city providing bespoke woodworking solutions to commercial clients, it was eventually the beauty in design of making furniture that led Aidan to seek formal training with the Edward Barnsley Trust, in turn leading him to venture out on his own. With an emphasis on the element of design as well as using beautiful sustainably sourced British timbers such as Ash, Bog Oak and Elm, Aidan’s eye for attention to detail was rewarded when he was granted a Queen Elizabeth Scholarship (one of only four furniture makers to be awarded such a prestigious enrolment). Then in 2012, as part of her Royal Ma jesty the Queen’s commemorative

AIDAN MCEVOY coronation celebrations and the refurbishment of the Queen’s summer house at Buckingham Palace, Aidan was commissioned to produce a table suitable for seating six. Now Aiden’s time is divided by a variety of work. Commissioned one-off pieces of furniture involve understanding the aspirations of and often working closely with the client in hand to produce the desired final product. Then there are speculative runs of 5 – 10 pieces which have previously included coffee tables, wooden jewellery boxes and a gorgeous walnut goblet which is untreated on the inside enabling the wood to express its natural tannins - ideal for your morning espresso or perhaps an evening’s single malt beside the fire. Aidan also offers internships and runs short courses so that you too can learn to craft your own fine furniture. “My designs represent forms that I have a deep passion for. Coming up with an idea, honing it and then creating a unique piece of furniture with your own hands is incredibly satisfying. More and more people are realising this. Whether they learn to make furniture themselves or commission a piece that we then collaborate on, the end result is something which people truly cherish.”

SARAH LOUISE DIX

IN SURREY “ Flamboyant, funky and unmistakable, Sarah Louise Dix’s pieces have rapidly become some of the most desirable pieces on the market”

U

pholstery is a skill set sewn into our history since the Middle Ages. The Oxford Dictionary defines upholstery as a soft, padded textile covering that is fixed to furniture such as armchairs and sofas.

most desirable pieces on the market. Featured in fashion shoots, interiors blogs and TV shows, her quirky takes on traditional English upholstery have become instant classics.

Depending on yours or your upholsterer’s choices, a piece of furniture can be transformed into any colour scape you should so desire, refashioned into a work of art making it the focal point of any room it finds itself in. So why not let your imagination dictate what patterns festoon your favourite chair that has, let’s be honest, seen better days?

The Couture Label is strongly influenced by clothing structure, which results in completely individual finished pieces. This inspiration takes many forms: some designs physically incorporate a garment into the piece, while others have structural elements such as corsetry or tailoring. A very limited number of couture label pieces are available for purchase. Alternatively a piece can be made to order.

The good news for that beleaguered arm chair is that Studio 22 and its proprietor Sarah Louise Dix exist to enrich and extend the lives of our fallen friends of the soft furnishings world. If you have the vision and creativity then why not pay Studio 22 a visit? Based in Godalming, Sarah originally studied fashion design and has always been an admirer of the industry and design stalwarts such as Vivienne Westwood. Having taken an upholstery course at her local adult education centre and learning the traditional skills associated, subsequent years were spent mastering her craft and producing one off pieces inspired by her roots in fashion. Sarah produces a range of upholstered furniture made for you to take home which include her signature Corset Chair (pictured), Pink Label and her Couture Label – all inspired by the world of fashion. Flamboyant, funky and unmistakable, Sarah Louise Dix’s pieces have rapidly become some of the

If you wish to take a piece from your home (whether modern or traditional) for a much needed fix up and renovation then Sarah and her team are more than happy to help and will also be able to source fabrics for you too. If all this talk of transformation is making you feel giddy with excitement at the prospect of making your home truly you and truly unique, then why not learn something new this year and take an upholstery course with Sarah? Learn the traditional upholstery skills while using timehonoured materials such as coil springs, fibre (coir), hessian, cotton wadding and calico. A variety of courses are available for beginners and intermediates while a more in-depth 10 week course is also available. Potential students are free to bring along their own pieces of furniture for renovation and whilst tools are provided free of charge, materials will be an additional cost.
