Talking Creativity and Design
This month we talk to Anna Schmidt the founder of ALSO Home.
A
nna Schmidt established ALSO Home in 2008 and since then has been building this stylish Cranleigh based lifestyle brand. With over 10 years of experience working as a textiles designer and a design director, Anna has poured all of this experience into producing beautifully designed items for the home.
Anna’s design inspiration has been born from years travelling the world discovering interesting designs and techniques, hearing the stories of the individuals who produce these amazing items using skills that have been passed down throughout the generations. Anna and her team believe there is something truly special about an object that’s been crafted by hand. There are the obvious things, like outstanding quality and unique personality, but with ALSO Home the real magic lies in the incredible truth that the item you are holding is a testimony of creativity. This is what has led to the creation of their designs and collections. It is an intuitive search and quest for the right products, fabrics, colours and textures. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE ROOM IN THE HOUSE? At the moment it is my living room. We moved into a new house last October and are slowly decorating. I love the living room because it’s the one room we have insisted on the kids NOT leaving their toys lying around, so it’s a lovely haven for us! I have a favourite chair in the corner which is really cosy, with the most gorgeous wood effect wall paper behind it.
S
WHAT IS YOUR DESIGN INSPIRATION CURRENTLY? Scandinese! It’s a mix of Scandinavian with Japanese. When I started ALSO Home I was very influenced by Japanese designs and their simplicity within design. As trends have evolved over the last few years the collection has taken a softer approach influenced by Scandinavian design. But now we have the combination of the two – Scandinese. The very best of both design influences.
S
b
CREATIVELY, WHO OR WHAT HAS HAD THE GREATEST IMPACT ON YOU? I’m not inspired by any one designer or artist, but I am inspired by many people and things around me. I do have a huge love of all things Scandinavian though. They just seem to oooze design effortlessly in Denmark and Stockholm.
S
OF YOUR CURRENT COLLECTION WHICH IS YOU FAVOURITE ITEM? It would have to be our beautiful soft washed bed linen and our white washed seagrass baskets.
S
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE COLOUR? Can I choose two favourite colours? At the moment it’s Grey and Lime!

How Your Garden Grows
The centre of horticultural excellence in the county, RHS Garden Wisley, run some hugely beneficial workshops and courses to help you ensure that your garden is blooming at all the right times of the year.
COURSES AND WORKSHOPS Increasing the Long Term Performance of Perennials
10th July How long will plants survive? Will they spread? How will my new border look in five years’ time? This full-day garden-based workshop with renowned plantsman Noel Kingsbury aims to encourage participants to observe garden and landscape plants, focusing on their growth through the year. The session will look at how plants compete with each other, how to assess prospects for their longevity and their suitability for a variety of garden locations. Gardeners and designers can then use their experience and knowledge of plants to plan for the maximising of interest and the minimising of maintenance at all seasons.
What Now? July and August
12th July Are you new to gardening and unsure what exactly you should be doing when, or are you a keen gardener wanting to brush up on your skills? Let the RHS experts help you through the gardening year providing a whistle-stop tour of techniques, tips, tricks and advice on seasonal tasks so that you know what you could be doing when. July and August will 10
include taking cuttings, watering, summer pruning of shrubs, trees and fruit, harvesting seed and hedge trimming with opportunities for you to have a go at some practical tasks yourself. The session will include practical activities and a walk outside in the garden, so please come prepared with suitable clothing, footwear and gardening gloves.
garden team. Learn about the miraculous tropicals growing by the laboratory wall and the exciting new Mediterranean plantings among many others. Finish the tour with a cooked breakfast in the restaurant.
Summer Ornamental Pruning
27th July Summer Walk and Talk
13th & 15th July The garden is in full swing and at its most floriferous and colourful. Join RHS Garden Wisley’s Curatorial Team, as they extol the virtues of plants which bring colour to our gardens during the summer months. Learn about the plants that put on their show at this time of year and what to look out for in the coming months. This session will involve a considerable walk outside, so please come prepared with suitable footwear and clothing.
Many early summer flowering shrubs and trees require pruning at this time of year to ensure their longevity and to maximise their performance for years to come. This talk and demonstration by expert RHS staff will teach you the theory behind pruning shrubs in the summer along with vital pruning principles which will allow your plants to be at their best for the years ahead. General maintenance and pruning shrubs and climbers such as Deutzia, Philadelphus, Spirea and Wisteria will be covered. This session will involve walking outdoors and practical demonstrations, so please come prepared with suitable footwear and clothing.
Making the Most of Microclimates
20th July A range of micro-climates means that many unusual plants thrive in the garden. Join them for an early morning walk and talk around the garden with their expert

What are the biggest mistakes people make when buying a home?
L
earning from your mistakes is always important, and it is particularly important when it comes to buying a property. Here are 10 common mistakes that often rear their heads. Some may seem obvious. Others may appear when time is against you. Either way, we have come up with practical solutions to help track down that dream home.
1. Putting in an offer after a single viewing.
Many homeowners regret snapping up a property without looking around a second time. It may be a long drive away, you may be rushed or late for supper, but always find time for a second or third viewing.
2. Not getting finance sorted until it is too late. Make sure you have spoken to your bank
or building society to agree your mortgage in principle. It is easy to get carried away with the romance of buying a property, then discover your bank will not lend you sufficient funds to snap up your dream home. Before you make an offer or begin your house search, talk to your mortgage-lender first.
3. Doing insufficient research into the state of the local property market. Carry out basic
research into what properties have been fetching in the area, then you will know what to offer for your new home. Your agent or www. mouseprice.com are useful sources.
4. Failing to identify the need to move quickly.
There are all kinds of situations in which, if you do not move quickly, you will not get the property you want. It is wise to set out your criteria from the outset, then get your skates on.
5. Failing to take into account the seller's personal circumstances. Is the seller in no
particular hurry to move? Or in a desperate hurry because he has just been offered a new job in Australia? Ignore that all-important consideration and you may get your buying strategy wrong.
6. Neglecting to talk to neighbours.
You will often need to pluck up the courage, but it is worth knocking on your prospective neighbours’ doors to find out more about an area. A few preliminary inquiries should be enough.
PROPERTY OF THE MONTH
r
7. Skimping on the survey. A full survey should help identify any serious structural defects, as opposed to a more cursory one.
8. Using the wrong solicitors. If you are
thinking of buying a new home, then ask friends for their personal recommendations. Sales can sometimes fall through if the seller loses patience with the buyer’s solicitors.
9. Not double-checking commuting times. If you have been told that you will be in Waterloo in 45 minutes from your new home, make sure that is accurate. 10. Viewing just in the morning or evening.
o
Driving or walking past before work, at lunchtime and later at night, will help build up a better picture of your new home.

Possibly Haslemere’s most famous resident, Alfred Lord Tennyson, moved to the town in the early 20th Century and campaigned successfully for a train station to be built in Haslemere. The commuter belt's landscape may have looked very different today had it not been for his efforts.

The musical instrument, the Recorder, (ubiquitously taught at schools the length and breadth of the country), was revived and popularised by French born Arnold Dolmetsch, who settled in the town in the early 1900’s.

Residential Conveyancing
PROPERTY
/kənˈveɪənsɪŋ/
noun 1. the branch of law practice consisting of examining titles, giving opinions as to their validity, and drawing of deeds, etc., for the conveyance of property from one person to another.
1. My estate agent has recommended a solicitor? Estate agents often have a panel of solicitors firms that they recommend. However be aware that the estate agent gets a significant commission for doing so. The risk is that they recommend the firm that pays the highest commission rather than the one that offers the best service. It will also no doubt cost you more.
buying a very old property for example. The surveyor will get into the attic, check behind walls, and look between floors and above ceilings. Make sure you get 3 or 4 quotes.
5. How much is stamp duty? Up to £125k
0%
2. What is the difference between a solicitor and conveyancer?
£126k-£250k 2%
A solicitor is a qualified lawyer and a member of the law society. A licensed conveyancer has less training but is specilaised in property. If a transaction gets difficult for some reason, then you will need a solicitor.
3. What Searches are required? You need to conduct a series of searches on the property - the solicitor and mortgage lender will recommend the appropriate ones. They may include: local authority searches, title register and plan, flood risk, water authority searches, chancel repair search, environmental search and location specific searches.
£251k - £925k

£926k - £1.5m

Over £1.5m
12%
The buyer pays stamp duty not the seller. Stamp duty rates for additional properties are 3% more than the above rates. Stamp duty is now calculated like income tax. For example, if the purchase price were £425k, the stamp duty would be: 0% on the first £125,000 = £0 2% on the next £125,000 = £2,500 5% on the final £150,000 = £7,500 Total stamp duty payable = £10,000
4. What type of survey? A survey is an inspection of the property’s condition and will tell you whether there are any structural problems or major repairs required. They are carried out by qualified surveyors. There are 3 types of survey – a condition report, a homebuyers report or a builder’s survey. The first is very basic and is probably a waste of money in that it provides so little detail – just a summary of the risks to the building. The Homebuyers report is more detailed and will tell you the obvious major problems (eg rot or subsidence) and includes a valuation, but tends to be full of caveats. The building survey tends to be expensive but is extensive and provides a detailed report - valuable if you are
6. Help in buying your home There are a number of government schemes, which help you get on the property ladder. These include: Help to Buy Part 1: Equity Loan, Help to Buy Part 2: Mortgage Guarantee, First Buy (Equity Loans), Shared Ownership (new builds) and Shared Ownership (resale), rent to buy and right to buy.

he kitchen has always been the hub and heart of every home, the room around which all family life revolves. The kitchen nourishes and sustains us, brings us together and fortifies us for life outside the home. But what we want from our kitchens and how they should make us feel changes with the times.
OUR
HOUSE
Seymour Kitchens, located on the outskirts of Guildford, knows this all too well and for thirty years have been manufacturing and fitting the finest kitchens, employing traditional cabinetry skills with an appreciation of the latest technology and the most modern trends and gadgets. A family run business, from his workshop David Seymour and his team of craftsmen design and build kitchens to suit any taste or budget, whether you are looking to update an existing kitchen or to create a new one from scratch. But to get a true sense of the effortless contemporary style and attention to detail in a Seymour kitchen you only have to visit their showroom.
OUR
Ultra-modern high gloss handle-less kitchens with smooth, clean lines sit alongside the fully bespoke hand painted kitchens that Seymour’s are
celebrated for, and they also offer fitted kitchens from some of Europe’s leading names. Both feature modern gadgets from built in Bluetooth speakers to boiling water taps. But it’s not just kitchens that Seymour’s expertise extends to. They also design, manufacture and install bedrooms and studies as well as custom built storage and furniture for living rooms, all hand built in the workshop adjoining the showroom and can be supplied with high quality internal fittings from an extensive range. Don’t let the high-end style at the heart of Seymour’s range deceive you, however, as you can be certain that an affordable kitchen to suit your budget can be found here, with the same service and quality across the whole range. So whatever project you aspire to, your dream kitchen or bedroom may be closer than you think. You need only call or visit Seymour Kitchens and Bedrooms to discover how they can bring that dream to life.

GARDEN ROOMS Green Retreats OUR HOUSE
OUR HOUSE
W
here ARE you supposed to put your husband, his computers, consoles, guitars, the cats, the kids (joking…sort of) when you live in a small house in the town centre?
Our story of how we got our gorgeous Inspiration Retreat is probably not too dissimilar to many readers. We have a lovely, albeit small, three bed semi-detached house in the centre of Guildford. We had re-mortgaged our house and applied for planning, twice, and had it rejected both times. Not to be defeated, and desperate for more space to fill with my husband’s computers/guitars/general geek paraphernalia (and finally have my dining room back – yey!) we decided instead to convert our basement. The cost seemed to increase weekly, and by the time the structural surveyor came back with yet more cost we pulled the plug. Then one day, whilst searching for Home Office ideas, I came across Green Retreats. With the exception of it not being attached to the house - it was, quite literally, everything we needed. In fact, it was 6sq meters MORE than we needed. We needed space, we would love a large light filled room to work and relax in but that hadn’t seemed possible until now and certainly not possible to do within our budget. And yet here it was – no planning required, all-inclusive cost and a beautiful modern room that took nothing away from our existing home. From the initial call to Green Retreats, to the final installation, our experience has been absolutely super. I wouldn’t have agreed to write this had it been anything other than that.
Before they arrived for the initial consultation we had played around on the website, creating our dream room. They changed it only very slightly - offering us advice and ideas that we hadn’t even considered. In fact, once we were done with the final design, we ended up saving money. There was never any pressure from them - despite the fact that we were, pretty much, a sure thing. The garden room took 3.5 days, in total, to build. We had to prepare the ground for them, and we opted to bury and lay the electric cable ourselves to save money. It took about 5 hours to get the foundations in. Piles and all. A week later Team Charming (that’s not really their name, but they might consider it) turned up the get the main structure up and water tight. That took one day. One. On the second day they laid the floor, got the electric and network cables working, sorted out the walls, added the final touches and left. With the exception of the heating and air-conditioning (I know!) which had been scheduled for a couple of weeks later, we were finished. Quicker than an extension, bigger than both the extension and the basement and all for less than half the price. It is secure, warm, bright and spacious and we couldn’t be happier. It has longevity I don’t think we had considered at the time of installation and I am certain it will remain one of the most loved rooms in the house.

he Fire Gallery in Chertsey stocks Danish stove manufacturer Morsø, who have been producing cast iron stoves for 162 years – this makes Morsø the oldest stove manufacturer in the world.
OUR
In the early years, Morsø manufactured everything from barn windows to cooking stoves as well as pots and pans on the small island of Mors in Denmark. At the turn of the 20th century, Morsø began supplying heating systems to churches, schools and public buildings. By 1915 they were bestowed the title of “Purveyor to the Royal Danish Court”. And now, their products come to Chertsey!
HOUSE
HOUSE
BEING SCANDINAVIAN MEANS BEING GREEN Morsø has always placed importance of being green and sustainable: • 98% of the material used in their cast iron stoves comes from scrap which has been recycled. It is quite fascinating to think that your new stove might have once been a bicycle… • Morsø make sure that 80% of the energy needed for manufacturing comes from sustainable energy sources, mainly wind energy • They use recycled packaging with minimum print colours and the small amount we do use is solely water based• The Fire Gallery recommends burning wood as it is CO2 neutral and therefore a green energy source as it is renewable (unlike coal or gas) OUTDOOR HEATING AND COOKING Now, Morsø has taken the principle of bringing people together whilst enjoying a fire inside the home and applied it to the outdoors with the new cast iron FORNO range. The FORNO is a three-in-one outdoor heater, pizza oven and BBQ. Unlike with a standard BBQ, once you have finished cooking, you keep on feeding the fire and, as the outdoor range is made of cast iron, it will keep on heating your outside space whilst creating a cosy atmosphere. People have been known to sit outside in the garden until 3am with the FORNO crackling away…
In true Scandinavian spirit, the FORNO will make you and your closest spend time outside and interact which each other, cook together and laugh together. Enough talking – here is a FORNO recipe idea to get you started: PIZZA WITH MORTADELLA, CHERRY TOMATOES, ASPARAGUS AND SMOKED CHEESE • 1 ball pizza dough, 160g • 150ml tomato sauce • 1 fresh mozzarella cheese • 2tbsp smoked cheese • 4 slices mortadella • 4 green asparagus • 1 lemon • 1tbsp olive oil • 1 packet watercress Roll out the dough to approximately 30 cm diameter and spread the tomato sauce over it. Distribute half the mozzarella evenly over the base. Dot the smoked cheese and asparagus spears around, then the mortadella. Top off with a few drops of oil. Push the fire from the middle of the FORNO back to the edges of the stove in a semicircle, blow any ashes away from the middle. Now place the pizza in the middle of the FORNO where the fire was before. Bake for 1 minute, then turn the pizza 180 degrees and bake for a further minute. Turn it a few more times during the last 2 minutes’ baking. When it’s golden and crisp, take out the pizza and dry the strips of raw asparagus well, turn them in salt, pepper and a few drops of lemon juice. There you go!

Top Tips for Buying a Bed
O
ne of the most important (and exciting) parts of any home is choosing the perfect bed and mattress for you. With so many options out there, it’s important to bear in mind these rules from award winning bed makers Warren Evans to ensure you choose a bed and mattress you will love to sink into for years to come. 1) TIMELESS STYLE: Choose a bed frame that has a timeless style and elegance which will compliment whatever bedroom decor you choose. The beauty of natural, wooden frames is that the warmth and tone of the wood grain, or the clean finesse of cream or white paint, will suit a variety of colour schemes, and a classic design will always form an ideal centrepiece to your bedroom. 2) BUILT TO LAST: A good bed has to be made with the finest materials, using tried and trusted methods to ensure you will get to enjoy many nights of comfortable sleep. Warren Evans’ beds, furniture and mattress are handcrafted from their own designs, using the same knowledge, care and skills gained in 38 years of craftsmanship. 3) RESPONSIVE SUPPORT: People come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and weights, and it’s important to appreciate the specific needs your body has when shopping for a mattress (particularly if you’re sharing the bed). Warren Evans’ award winning range of mattresses has been rated
within the top two mattress retailers in the 2015 Which? Members for advice, range and quality. 4) GO BIG: When choosing the right bed for you, considering the space you will need to get a good night’s sleep is vital. When two people lie on a double bed, the space you’re lying in is basically no bigger than that of a cot, which isn’t conducive to you getting a comfortable night’s shut eye. Resident sleep expert Dave Gibson recommends that, when bed-shopping, couples should lay side by side, with their arms behind their heads and elbows out. If their elbows touch, they don’t have enough room to sleep well. 5) EXPERT DELIVERY SERVICE: Moving home can be a very stressful time, so you want to be sure the bed and mattress you’re buying will be brought to your home as efficiently as possible. Warren Evans bring your newly built bed into the room of your choice and assemble it for you. They also take away and dispose of your old bed and mattress, and with the 120 night trial on our Warren Evans mattresses you can rest easy that buying your new bed will be simple and hassle free. All readers of The Guide 2 Surrey can enjoy free delivery on their order with code “SURREY”.
