In Hindsight A year in visual stories
Non multa, sed multum Not many, but much
When words fail For decades, journalists have relied on the written word to tell the stories that matter. The printed broadsheet was the main platform for the daily news, investigatives, think-pieces, and more. But as the world evolved and adapted to modern technology, so did journalism. Today, society is no longer solely dependent on the printed press for information. With the advent of the internet, news has become accessible at the mere click of a button. Everyone and anyone can share a story with someone across the globe in under a minute. The rapid digitization of the world and the sheer volume of information audiences sift through on a regular basis present a challenge to all journalists: Innovate and adapt, or risk fading into the background. Gone are the days when visuals were simply a complement to text, rarely ever standing on its own. Now, visual stories—narratives that are driven by graphics, photos, videos, interactive websites, among others—are at the forefront of journalism. These new media formats are an opportunity for publications to cut through the noise and reclaim its audience. This prompts for pieces that aren’t only designed to engage, but to immerse as well. Visual journalists are, then, called not only to reimagine traditional reportage, but also to serve as bearers of truth amid the saturated and easily manipulated media landscape. In The GUIDON’s 90th year, the publication pushed the boundaries of how we tell the Atenean story in the context of Filipino society. These pages showcase some of the best visual stories that have been released in the last academic year—it is a testament to the capabilities and potentials of campus journalists as they explore multimedia journalism. This folio marks the beginning of a new era for The GUIDON’s Design Cluster and the publication at large. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Allow our work to tell you more.

Catching light: Faces of hope in Marawi City The five-month battle between the extremist Maute Group and armed forces in Marawi City prompted President Rodrigo Duterte to declare Martial Law in Mindanao in 2017. Despite the uncertain future brought by persistent delays in the government’s rehabilitation efforts, the conclusion of Martial Law last December 31, 2019 has paved the way for Maranaos to embark on a new chapter starting this new year. Catching light: Faces of hope in Marawi City looks into the situation of Marawi’s residents as they, themselves, rebuild the Islamic city. As they battle insufficient relief efforts, makeshift classrooms, and religious discrimination from other Filipinos, residents remain hopeful that they will return home.

From the broadsheet layout to illustrations, Graphic Design staffers constantly collaborate with writers, photographers, and videographers to design, shape, and lead the visual identity of their content. It means to say to eradicate illiteracy, said the principal.
Catching light Amidst a typical classroom setting, a portrait photo of President Rodrigo Duterte is positioned high above the walls of the makeshift classrooms. His photo overlooks an entire class of young children who are currently enrolled in the Marawi Sarimanok Elementary Pilot School.
A number of military soldiers have guarded the city center since the start of the siege in 2017. Some wish to finally return to their families after more than two years of service.

Lost in translation The EDSA Revolution was undoubtedly a pivotal event in the country’s fight for democracy. However, its place in the national consciousness decades after the movement remains in question. The GUIDON tackles EDSA’s legacy from the eyes of three individuals in its threepart docuseries: Axis. Produced by Bea Bacason, Mariana Gardoce, Danielle R. Garcia Written by Pioee B. Bassig, Derick M. Gabrillo, Julian Michael Maiz Directed by Julian Michael Maiz and Tintin Sinamban Shot by Julian Michael Maiz, Kristine Sinamban Edited by Kristine Sinamban
AXIS
Reconciling prosperity The late dictator Ferdinand Marcos’ leadership brought about high unemployment rates and widespread poverty that post-EDSA governments sought to remedy. However, decades after economic policies were enacted to overcome these conditions, the Philippines remains embattled in its road to economic progress. Economics Department Lecturer Jerik Cruz examines the country’s major economic milestones in the past six decades and debunks the misconception that the proclamation of Martial Law marked the country’s economic glory. Written by Louise Margaret L. Del Rosario, Carlo O. Fernandez, Alexis Nicole Ferreras Shot by Danielle Angela G. Rosales, Kristine Sinamban, Denise Tumaliuan Edited by Therese Macasaet
Captured minds Three decades after the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos was ousted from leadership, parallels between his administration and President Rodrigo Duterte’s term seem to be surfacing. Former activist leader Lino Rivera, experts, and student activists weigh in on the psychology behind the overwhelming success of People Power as a political tool in 1986 and whether the faith in fighting for a democracy lives on. Kawaraw: Faces of Hope in Marawi City After a five-month battle, the Armed Forces of the Philippines reclaimed Marawi City from the pro-ISIS militant group Maute on October 2017. Two years later, residents of Ground Zero—the main battleground between the Philippine Army and the Maute Group—returned to their land for the first time to pray for peace and the opportunity to finally return to their homes. Named after the word for bravery in Maranao, Kawaraw tells the stories of Marawi’s residents as they face the new battle of rebuilding their beloved city while retaining their cultural identity. Despite the hazy future brought by rehabilitation delays and insufficient relief efforts, residents continue to persist in hopes that they may soon come home. Garcia, Mariana Gardoce, Tatiana Maligro, Jason Mariano, Aldo Santiago, and Alithea C. Soriano
