≥ AUTUMN/WINTER SEASON 2021 CONCERTS AT THE BRIDGEWATER HALL MUSIC DIRECTOR SIR MARK ELDER CH CBE

A WARM WELCOME TO THE HALLÉ’S NEW SEASON!

We are all thrilled to be able to welcome everyone back to The Bridgewater Hall once more for a full, if shortened, Hallé autumn season. As we glimpse normality again, we can, together, look forward to some magnificent music-making. We will announce our spring concerts in October, but until then there are treasures to be discovered and wonderful stories to be told. Many of you will look forward to hearing some of the repertoire’s great masterpieces, heard perhaps afresh after so long an absence. We particularly look forward to performing these works for people new to our concerts, curious and keen to experience something special. 2 THE HALLÉ’S AUTUMN/WINTER SEASON 2021 AT THE BRIDGEWATER HALL

My opening trio of programmes includes Sibelius’s ever-popular Second Symphony, Elgar’s First – given its world premiere by the Hallé in 1908 – and Brahms’s glorious Third, tranquil and poignant, then dramatic and peaceful once more. Delyana Lazarova, our already acclaimed Assistant Conductor, will perform Dvořák’s ‘New World’ Symphony and Gemma New will conduct Copland’s euphoric Third, with its finale inspired by the composer’s own Fanfare for the Common Man. You can look forward to Mussorgsky’s Pictures from an Exhibition, in Ravel’s famous arrangement, Nicola Benedetti playing Wynton Marsalis’s Violin Concerto, Boris Giltburg performing Rachmaninov’s Fourth Piano Concerto, Natalya Romaniw singing Richard Strauss’s Four Last Songs and Elisabeth Brauß playing Grieg’s wonderfully Romantic Piano Concerto. We always want to offer you some wonderful surprises to sit alongside these great works. Our short season offers an inspirational selection: Lera Auerbach’s fateful and evocative Icarus; Florence Price’s ground-breaking Ethiopia’s Shadow in America (and what a story that is); Dorothy Howell’s Keatsinspired Lamia and Thea Musgrave’s homage to Sibelius, Song of the Enchanter. There is a stirring and entertaining programme of Hallé Pops concerts, including a celebration of the music of Elton John and Nashville country classics. Please don’t miss our new series of chamber music concerts at Hallé St Peter’s, details of which you will find throughout this brochure. You can also look forward to celebrating Christmas, perhaps with more joy and gusto than ever. New or familiar, whatever your personal favourites are, we are delighted to share this wonderful music with you, and cannot wait to see you all again.

SIBELIUS’S SYMPHONY NO.2 Vaughan Williams Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis Ravel Piano Concerto in G major Thea Musgrave Song of the Enchanter Sibelius Symphony No.2

15' 23' 6' 43'

Sir Mark Elder conductor • Benjamin Grosvenor piano Many of our concerts this season help tell the stories of composers and the music you will hear. Opening the season, Sir Mark offers the first of our ‘Stories behind the music’ concerts. What Vaughan Williams learnt from Ravel about orchestration was put to superb effect in the string sonorities of the Tallis Fantasia, his spiritual, moving first masterpiece. Benjamin Grosvenor deepens his ongoing relationship with the Hallé with Ravel’s G major concerto, which has, Sir Mark feels, ‘something of the circus never far away in the music’; it’s laced with solos that players relish and is blessed by a song-like slow movement of breath-taking beauty. Conceived in Italy, Mediterranean warmth unlocked Sibelius’s creativity in his majestic Second Symphony. Infused with late-Romantic melodies, it was the Hallé, under Richter, who gave the British premiere. It is prefaced by Thea Musgrave’s short Sibelian homage, which, replete with glowing orchestral textures and subtle quotes from the Master, is inspired by a story from the Kalevala, Finland’s national epic. At these concerts we celebrate the Halle’s family of corporate supporters who so generously continued their support throughout the last 18 months.

Benjamin Grosvenor piano Eva Þórarinsdóttir violin • Rosemary Attree violin Martin Schäfer viola • Nicholas Trygstad cello The art of counterpoint – the way composers combine simultaneous melodic lines – is celebrated in works from different eras, each paying homage to J. S. Bach. Sofia Gubaidulina’s quartet provides an taster to her powerful Offertorium, itself growing out of a Bach quotation, which the Hallé plays on 30 September. Alongside his performances of Ravel with the Hallé, Benjamin Grosvenor joins a trio of the players for Schumann’s glorious Piano Quartet, its slow movement theme one of the sublime inspirations of early Romanticism. ELGAR’S SYMPHONY NO.1 Wagner Lohengrin: Prelude to Act I Sofia Gubaidulina Offertorium Elgar Symphony No.1

8' 40' 50'

Sir Mark Elder conductor • Baiba Skride violin Establishing the mood of the concert’s first half, Wagner’s first act prelude to Lohengrin, evokes the descent of the Holy Grail from Heaven in a rapt and gradual crescendo. Its spirituality links perfectly with Offertorium, chosen to celebrate the 90th birthday of Sofia Gubaidulina, one of the greatest Russian composers of the post-Shostakovich generation. For Sir Mark it is an ‘exciting, dramatic and powerful work’, derived from the theme of J. S. Bach’s Musical Offering. Making her Hallé debut, the Latvian violinist, Baiba Skride, has performed the work with leading orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic and Boston Symphony. To conclude, Elgar’s First Symphony which is deeply associated with the Hallé since its premiere in 1908 conducted by Hans Richter, to whom Elgar dedicated it with the inscription ‘true artist and true friend’. 6.30pm in the auditorium David Butcher, Hallé Chief Executive, introduces the Hallé autumn season, with Head of Artistic Planning, Anna Hirst and Hallé musicians.

BRAHMS’S SYMPHONY NO.3 Haydn Symphony No.64, ‘Tempora mutantur’ Stravinsky Symphony of Psalms Brahms Symphony No.3

21' 21' 33'

Sir Mark Elder conductor • Hallé Choir matthew hamilton choral director To celebrate its first concert appearance since February 2020, the Hallé Choir takes pride of place in Stravinsky’s striking Symphony of Psalms. Begun ‘in a state of religious and musical ebullience,’ the composer wrote, it culminates with both ‘a vision of Elijah’s chariot’ and the serene alleluias of the heavenly host. Sir Mark opens the concert with a Haydn symphony whose beautiful character and intriguing title Tempora mutantur (‘Times change’) seem, he feels, ‘appropriate for this moment in time’. The Brahms symphonies continue to fascinate Sir Mark for their distinctive, individual characteristics. This exploration of the Third contrasts the ‘intimate tenderness’ of the first three movements with ‘the rugged quality of the finale’, its drama finally quelled in calm resolution.

6pm in the auditorium The Hallé’s Choral Director, Matthew Hamilton, and members of the choir discuss the Hallé Choir’s journey to performing Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms.

Y3

Delyana Lazarova conductor • James Ehnes violin In this American-themed programme, Hallé Assistant Conductor Delyana Lazarova is excited to be ‘bringing to life again the music of the inspiring composer Florence Price’. She was the first African-American woman to gain recognition as a symphonic composer. For Delyana, Ethiopia’s Shadow in America combines ‘melodies of pure beauty, imaginative use of orchestral colours and an evocative musical language’ drawn from the spirituals of African-American slaves. A favourite Hallé guest artist, James Ehnes performs Barber’s Violin Concerto, its full-bloodied, soaring lyricism creating a 20th-century American classic. It was Dvořák in the New York Herald who pinpointed spirituals as the way forward for American composers. Spirituals also influenced his own Ninth Symphony, its soubriquet ‘From the New World’ aiming to convey his vivid impressions of the USA. CONCERT SPONSORED BY

Gemma New conductor • Laura van der Heijden cello New Zealand-born Gemma New, a first-time Hallé guest, has been making waves in the USA as a rising star. The season’s ‘Stories behind the music’ continue with Icarus, by the Russian/American Lera Auerbach. Enthralled from childhood by Ancient Greek mythology, this work’s character personified for her the tragic tale of Icarus’s ill-fated flight. Walton’s Cello Concerto combines distinguishing aspects of his music – bitter-sweet melancholy and vigorous energy. It’s performed by Laura van der Heijden, who won the 2012 BBC Young Musician of the Year playing this concerto. Copland’s Third Symphony has a euphoric optimism, especially its finale based on his celebrated Fanfare for the Common Man. After the premiere, the conductor Koussevitzky declared, ‘This is the greatest American Symphony. It goes from the heart to the heart’.

MENDELSSOHN’S A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM

Hallé Artist in Association, Ryan Wigglesworth, conducts a programme centred around his Piano Concerto, premiered at the 2019 BBC Proms by another ever welcome Hallé guest, Marc-André Hamelin, dubbed by the New York Times as ‘A performer of near-superhuman technical prowess’. Of Mozartian Classical proportions, Wigglesworth describes his concerto’s four movements as ‘studies in character’, at its heart an intimate ‘Notturno’, based on a Polish folksong he first heard around a campfire. Among critical plaudits, The Times lauded Wigglesworth’s ‘conjuror’s ability to cast a spell’. The concert opens with characters embroiled in Midsummer mayhem as portrayed in Mendelssohn’s magical score to Shakespeare’s play. Schumann’s Second Symphony is a journey from darkness to light, consciously emulating Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, composed after serious illness and enshrining the composer’s love for his wife Clara. 6.30pm in the auditorium Ryan Wigglesworth and Marc-André Hamelin discuss the connection between Mendelssohn and Schumann with a short performance from Chetham’s students.

RICHARD STRAUSS’S FOUR LAST SONGS Howell Lamia 15' 24' R. Strauss Four Last Songs R. Strauss Serenade 10' Mozart Symphony No.41, ‘Jupiter’ 31' Christian Reif conductor • Natalya Romaniw soprano A concert curated around beginnings and endings with Richard Strauss centre-stage, contrasting his teenage Serenade with his swansong, Four Last Songs, composed aged 84. Couched in glowing autumnal hues by a vocal and orchestral master, they’ll be sung by Welsh soprano Natalya Romaniw, last with the Hallé in Manchester in 2016 when she thrilled concert-goers in Beethoven’s Ninth. She’s joined by the young German conductor Christian Reif, a Hallé newcomer, whose career has developed apace in the States when Resident Conductor of the San Francisco Symphony. To start, Lamia is a Straussian symphonic poem, inspired by Keats, written by the 20-year-old Dorothy Howell and premiered by Henry Wood at the 1919 Proms. The concert concludes with Mozart’s final symphony, where the contrapuntal wizardry of its finale aptly justifies its regal nickname – ‘Jupiter’.

DUKAS’ THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE

A classic Hallé programme, mixing familiar composers with lesser-known works, is framed by Czech music. Suk’s Fantastic Scherzo is a rarity, yet it is graced by the most beguiling of Bohemian waltzes. Remarkably, for such a popular composer, Rachmaninov’s final piano concerto hasn’t been played by the Hallé for over 20 years. Described by Sir Mark as a ‘great work of sadness and nostalgia’, it requires an outstanding virtuoso and the Hallé is delighted to welcome back Boris Giltburg, described in Gramophone as ‘a truly remarkable Rachmaninov interpreter’. After the disastrous chaos wrought by Dukas’s hapless Sorcerer’s Apprentice, so vividly evoked in music, order is restored with Janáček’s Sinfonietta. Boasting no less than 25 brass players, including nine trumpets, its exultant fanfares will resound around The Bridgewater Hall. CONCERT AND THURSDAY SERIES SPONSORED BY

Curiously, when first heard in London the following year, it didn’t make such a strong impression. Handel, confident he’d composed a masterpiece, and ever the canny entrepreneur, didn’t revive it for a couple of years. Thereafter, it steadily grew in the public’s affection, hardly surprising given arias like ‘Rejoice greatly, O daughters of Zion’ and ‘Why do the nations so furiously rage together’, let alone the thrilling choruses ‘Glory to God in the highest’, and, of course, ‘Hallelujah’. In her Hallé conducting debut, Sofi Jeannin, Chief Conductor of the BBC Singers, is joined by a crack quartet of British soloists.

MUSSORGSKY’S PICTURES FROM AN EXHIBITION

Cristian Mǎcelaru conducts as Nicola Benedetti performs the critically acclaimed concerto Wynton Marsalis composed for her. Taking its ‘inspiration from her life as a travelling performer’ and incorporating diverse allusions to her Scottish and Marsalis’s AfricanAmerican heritages, it’s in four picturesque movements, including a soulful ‘Blues’ and final ‘Hootenanny’, described by the composer as ‘a raucous, stomping and whimsical barn-yard throw-down.’ As an upbeat, Bernstein’s fizzing overture to his comic operetta Candide perfectly encapsulates the fantastical adventures of its ever-optimistic hero; and to end, Mussorgsky’s Pictures from an Exhibition, his remarkable feat of musical imagination in tribute to a deceased artist friend. Equally astounding is the added dimension Ravel conjures through the vibrant colours of his instrumental palette.
