A VERY WARM WELCOME TO THE HALLÉ’S SPRING 2022 SEASON.

I must begin by expressing my thanks to all of you who attended our concerts this autumn and for the tumultuous reception you have given us as we have returned to live music making in The Bridgewater Hall. Inspired by this we continue with boldness and no little celebration in a spring series illuminating some of the greatest orchestral music, opera and chamber music alongside some of the finest international artists who are joining us here in Manchester. We also mark the 150th anniversary of one of this country’s most celebrated composers, Ralph Vaughan Williams, a composer so associated with the Hallé. I’m thrilled to open the season with one of the most striking symphonies of the twentieth century, Mahler’s epic Third. This will be followed, later the same month, with another work dear to my heart, Debussy’s La mer which I will conduct alongside Rachmaninov’s glorious Second Symphony. performing Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in a programme that also features Berlioz’s astonishing Symphonie fantastique. Later in the season, after the Hallé's first performance of Clara Schumann’s wonderful Piano Concerto, the exciting young conductor Tabita Berglund returns to conduct Dvořák’s Cello Concerto performed by Jakob Koranyi and presents the UK premiere of Mette Henriette’s This Too with Bartók’s virtuosic Concerto for Orchestra. I know many of you will look forward to Beethoven’s mighty ‘Eroica’ and Tchaikovsky’s fateful tale of Francesca da Rimini, doomed in Dante’s hell. A major feature of the season celebrates the 150th anniversary of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ birth, with a complete cycle of his symphonies shared with our friends the BBC Philharmonic. I shall conduct a performance featuring his sixth symphony alongside what many consider one of his finest achievements, A Sea Symphony, as well as Symphony No.8 in a mischievous programme that includes Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks and Elena Langer’s Figaro gets a Divorce. Our season concludes in spectacular style with a complete semi-staged performance of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly with a stellar cast led by the acclaimed Eri Nakamura in the title role. David Hext, Riccardo Lorenzo Parmigiani, Erika Öhman, John Abendstern and Ben Gray percussion Alluring rhythms and percussive colours to delight the ear, in this programme devised by Hallé Section Principal David Hext, himself a distinguished composer of works for percussion instruments. Two 20th-century classics complement David’s compositions: Steve Reich’s breath-taking minimalist rhythmic tapestry, where he aimed ‘to make music from the simplest possible instruments’, and Cage’s Living Room Music, exemplifying his belief that the ordinary sounds of everyday life – a newspaper, door or furniture – intrinsically have the essence for vibrant music.

He admires its ‘musical imagination and the wonderful accumulative emotional power of its journey.’ Mahler felt that within this symphony ‘the whole of nature finds a voice’, composing it on the shore of the Attersee with views across the lake to the mountains beyond; from there he watched the changing moods of nature, images that seeped into the symphony’s fabric. The inner movements, framed by two vast symphonic canvases, were inspired by flowers, animals, people and angels, and include settings of Nietzsche, and from the folk collection Des Knaben Wunderhorn, in which Alice Coote, the Hallé Children’s Choir and sopranos and altos of the Hallé Choir take centrestage.

Sir Mark Elder conductor Although he has never combined them before in a concert, Sir Mark loves conducting these works by Debussy and Rachmaninov, which were both composed in the first decade of the 20th century. Debussy had a life-long love for the sea, finding the impetus for his three impressionistic symphonic sketches, La mer, in the painting of the Japanese artist Hokusai – his iconic image of a huge wave – as well as the seascapes of Turner. Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony is arguably the finest achievement of the composer’s middle period works and is a magnificent monument of late-Romantic Russian music. It’s full of memorable, long-breathed, beautifully scored melodies, tinged with melancholy, so characteristic of the composer, as in the slow movement’s clarinet theme which the Halle’s own Sergio Castelló López will undoubtedly relish. Stephen Bell conductor • Hallé Choir matthew hamilton choral director As the great John Williams, the most Oscar-nominated person in history, prepares for his 90th birthday, Stephen Bell, the Hallé and Hallé Choir celebrate this incredible composer and his symphonic legacy. ‘John is much more of a chameleon as a composer,’ says Steven Spielberg, ‘he reinvents himself with every picture.’ No-one can match Williams’ ability to evoke the essence of a movie; the pain of Schindler’s List, the poignancy of Saving Private Ryan, the sheer adventure of Indiana Jones or the innocent, unbelieveable excitement of E.T.. Maxime Pascal conductor • Alena Baeva violin The French conductor Maxime Pascal greatly impressed when, standing in at short notice, he made his Hallé debut conducting Berlioz at the 2019 Proms. He now makes his first appearance in Manchester, as does the young Russian violinist Alena Baeva, whose playing has been described by The Strad as ‘heroic and full of personality’. She plays Beethoven’s noble and spacious Violin Concerto. Appropriately, Pascal conducts more Berlioz, his extraordinary, Symphonie fantastique, conceived in the wake of his ardent, initially unrequited, love for the actress Harriet Smithson. Described as ‘Episodes in the life of an Artist’ (aka Berlioz himself) each movement portrays his strange opium-induced dreams such as the famous ‘March to the Scaffold’. 192 years since its premiere, the sheer originality of this great masterwork never fails to astonish.

Carlo Rizzi conductor • Heejae Kim piano • Gareth Small trumpet Concerts directed by Carlo Rizzi, Conductor Laureate of Welsh National Opera, are keenly anticipated by Hallé audiences. His programme begins with a piece new to the Hallé – Stravinsky’s tribute to his teacher Rimsky-Korsakov, which after its premiere was lost for over a century. Heejae Kim, winner of the Terence Judd–Hallé Award at the 2015 Leeds International Piano Competition, makes a welcome return playing Shostakovich’s First Piano Concerto, in which she’s joined by the Hallé’s Principal Trumpet, Gareth Small. Replete with sardonic wit and quotes including Beethoven, Haydn and Shostakovich himself, it’s capped with an uproarious finale. The concert concludes with Mahler’s bold calling card for his symphonic ambitions. Also known by its epithet, ‘Titan’, its music reflects his view that a symphony must embrace the world.

Delyana Lazarova conductor Delyana Lazarova, winner of the inaugural Siemens Hallé International Conductors Competition and Hallé Youth Orchestra Music Director, takes to the podium to introduce and direct the combined forces of the Hallé and Hallé Youth Orchestra in an all-Russian programme that combines youth and experience. A truly memorable evening for both performers and audience alike. Tianyi Lu conductor • Isata Kanneh-Mason piano With commissions galore, from the BBC Proms to the Chicago Symphony, British-born/ USA-based, Anna Clyne has established a reputation as ‘a composer of uncommon gifts’ (New York Times). In This Midnight Hour, she responds to poems by Jiménez and Baudelaire in music combining high-octane energy and waltzing tenderness. Since last with the Hallé, Tianyi Lu has won First Prize in the prestigious Sir George Solti International Conductors’ Competition, whilst Isata Kanneh-Mason made her impressive Hallé debut last season. A passionate advocate of Clara Schumann’s music, she’ll be giving the Hallé’s first performance of her virtuosic concerto. Schoenberg’s admiration for Brahms is evident throughout his orchestral take on the latter’s G minor Piano Quartet. After Berlioz’s soothing lullaby played to the Holy Family once they’ve reached safety in Egypt, Berio’s cautionary animal tales include a fox, chicken, fawn, mouse and two urban bruiser tom cats. Janáček described Mládi, composed when 70, as ‘a kind of memory of youth’ incorporating Moravian folksongs he’d known since childhood.

Tabita Berglund conductor • Jakob Koranyi cello After her last visit to the Hallé, The Guardian commented that Tabita Berglund left her ‘appreciative Manchester audience invigorated’. She’s joined by the young Swedish cellist Jakob Koranyi, described by The Strad as ‘a force to be reckoned with’, who makes his Hallé debut in Dvořák’s concerto. Although mainly written during his US stay, the work reflects his homesickness for Bohemia, as well as being a heart-felt memorial to his beloved sister-in-law. After it, Berglund introduces a haunting miniature, This Too, by her Norwegian compatriot Mette Henriette, whose multi-talents as a composer, saxophone and jazz improviser have established her formidable reputation. Also while in the States, in exile from war-torn Hungary, Bartók wrote a final masterpiece, his virtuosic showpiece Concerto for Orchestra where the sections of the orchestra share the limelight. 6.30pm in the auditorium Tabita Berglund, Jakob Koranyi and Hallé violinist Tiberiu Buta explore the use of folk music in classical music, and their own views on the crossover between folk and classical.

Rodolfo Barráez conductor • Ning Feng violin A programme of music with America at its core, conducted by Rodolfo Barráez, who makes his first visit to the Hallé since excelling in the inaugural Siemens Hallé International Conductors Competition. Gershwin’s portrait of an American enjoying the sights and sounds of Paris, complete with car horns, is followed by the Violin Concerto of Austrian émigré Korngold incorporating melodies from his lush scores for Hollywood movies. It’s played by Ning Feng, International Tutor at the RNCM and winner of the 2006 Paganini Competition, who makes his debut at The Bridgewater Hall. Jennifer Higdon’s City Scape is her evocation of Atlanta: here, in the slow movement, its creeks and parks. Bernstein’s dynamic symphonic dances were expanded from his music-theatre classic in which Shakespeare’s ‘star-crossed lovers’ are relocated to New York. CONCERT SPONSORED BY

Lionel Bringuier conductor • Timothy Ridout viola A Hallé double debut for the French conductor Lionel Bringuier and British violist, Timothy Ridout. Having ‘an absolute mastery of his craft’ (Washington Post), Bringuier’s career is well established with regular visits to major orchestras across the globe, whilst Ridout is a former BBC New Generation Artist and First Prizewinner of the 1916 Lionel Tertis Competition. He is the soloist in Berlioz’s Harold in Italy, which the composer intended for Paganini, wanting to make the viola ‘a kind of melancholic dreamer in the manner of Byron’s Childe Harold.’ Kodály’s vibrant Dances of Galánta sprang from the folk music and gypsy bands he’d known since childhood, and Tchaikovsky’s graphic tone poem depicts Dante’s tale from his Divine Comedy, describing the fate of Francesca da Rimini and her lover forever doomed in Hell.

Kristiina Poska conductor • Nicholas Trygstad cello Berlioz’s overture, Roman Carnival, incorporating themes from his opera Benvenuto Cellini has all the vibrancy and exuberance of Rome en fête. It’s conducted by Estonian, Kristiina Poska, Chief Conductor of the Flanders Symphony Orchestra, who is directing the Hallé for the first time. In Schumann’s romantically lyrical Cello Concerto, written in a fortnight’s burst of inspiration, she’s joined by the orchestra’s principal cello, Nicholas Trygstad. Although Beethoven dedicated his revolutionary Third Symphony to Napoleon, the composer angrily withdrew it after his hero declared himself Emperor. Its subsequent title, ‘Eroica’, nevertheless reflects the character of a work that in its daring and ambition changed the course of music history. 7 APRIL SPONSORED BY

The programme includes the Hallé Children’s Choir in dramatic style for Chris Hazell’s The Journey, and a specially-commissioned new work for the Hallé Youth Orchestra by the Ivor Novello award-winning composer, Oliver Vibrans. The Youth Choir will present a selection of Songs to the Moon – works from across the globe, reflecting on the beauty and wonder of the moon from different cultural standpoints. To launch the Hallé's contribution to the joint Vaughan Williams symphony cycle, marking the 150th anniversary of his birth, John Wilson, renowned for his outstanding performances and award-winning recordings of British music, returns to the Hallé. The Ninth Symphony was RVW’s last symphonic utterance having its origins in Hardy’s Wessex and particularly Tess of the d’Urbervilles. Visionary in character, it ends enigmatically with the unearthly timbre of three pulsing saxophones, music that seems to be gazing into eternity itself. Combining works by Vaughan Williams and Holst is always apposite since they were lifelong friends. In his ever popular The Planets, it was their astrological characters which Holst so brilliantly portrayed, from the terrifying battlefield of Mars, to the solace of peace in Venus, the jollity of Jupiter and the mystic harmonies of Neptune.

The range of his art is distinctly apparent in the juxtaposition of these two symphonies, the Sixth with its turbulent fast movements and enigmatic, bleak wasteland conclusion, and the choral First, A Sea Symphony, setting Walt Whitman’s poetry, with its surging majestic opening and searching finale which Sir Mark views as ‘a mystical journey to the stars and beyond.’ Joining the Hallé Choir are soprano Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha, Song Award winner of the 2021 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition, making her Hallé debut, and an always welcome guest, Roderick Williams, described by the Daily Telegraph as ‘our greatest living baritone.’ HALLÉ YOUTH CHOIR SUPPORTED BY

Sir Mark Elder conductor • Steven Osborne piano A terrific Hallé programme starting with Stravinsky’s Concerto for piano and winds in which he looked back to Bach. Sir Mark describes the outer movements as having ‘such fun with plenty of cut and thrust’ and a slow middle movement of ‘intimacy and tenderness’. Steven Osborne gained critical plaudits for his recording of the work and the Hallé is delighted he’s joining them to perform it. It’s followed by Till Eulenspiegel, Strauss’s virtuoso symphonic poem vividly recounting the hero’s ‘merry pranks.’ Elena Langer’s colourful and immediate music follows with her concert suite from her lauded opera Figaro gets a Divorce. Mozart’s late string quintets represent the apogee of his chamber music achievements: in its ambition of scale, the C major Quintet is worthy of a place among Mozart’s greatest instrumental compositions like his final trio of symphonies.

Jamie Phillips conductor • Sophia Jaffé violin Jamie Phillips, former Hallé Associate Conductor, begins the concert with a characteristic work by Grace Williams, the leading Welsh composer of the middle decades of the last century, who was said to have ‘brought the music of Wales to the World.‘ Her Penillion is a colourful four-movement symphonic poem, its title referring to a centuries-old traditional Welsh improvised performance practice. Sophia Jaffé has regularly performed with the Hallé over the past decade gaining critical plaudits such as ‘impassioned’ and ‘sumptuous’; she returns to play Bruch’s ever popular First Violin Concerto. All four movements of Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony are haunted by a recurring theme symbolising Fate. From it he shaped a work of elemental power and drama, by turn impassioned and tender, that never fails to stir audiences’ emotions.

When Puccini saw Belasco’s play Madame Butterfly: A Tragedy of Japan in 1900, he instantly knew its operatic potential. Although its premiere at La Scala two years later wasn’t a success, it rapidly became an essential part of the repertoire of opera houses worldwide. A story of love betrayed, at its heart is the gentle heroine Cio-Cio San (‘Butterfly’ of the title); her aria ‘Un bel di vedremo’, and the ‘Humming Chorus’ are but two of the opera’s glorious inspirations. A world-class cast is led by the young Japanese soprano Eri Nakamura who has captivated audiences at Covent Garden, establishing her international reputation.

To mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of one of England's greatest composers, the Hallé and the BBC Philharmonic are joining forces once again to offer a unique Mancunian tribute. Building upon their acclaimed collaborations, these two orchestras combine once again to present a complete cycle of Vaughan Williams’ symphonies and showcase the extraordinary symphonic achievement of this musical visionary. Each work has its own character and style, often including some highly innovative features, but each is marked by an originality, a distinctiveness, that separates them from anything written before or since. Sir Mark Elder conductor • Baiba Skride violin Establishing the mood of the concert’s first half, Wagner’s first act prelude to Lohengrin, evokes the descent of the Holy Grail from Heaven in a rapt and gradual crescendo. Its spirituality links perfectly with Offertorium, chosen to celebrate the 90th birthday of Sofia Gubaidulina, one of the greatest Russian composers of the post-Shostakovich generation. For Sir Mark it is an ‘exciting, dramatic and powerful work’, derived from the theme of J. S. Bach’s Musical Offering. Making her Hallé debut, the Latvian violinist, Baiba Skride, has performed the work with leading orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic and Boston Symphony. To conclude, Elgar’s First Symphony which is deeply associated with the Hallé since its premiere in 1908 conducted by Hans Richter, to whom Elgar dedicated it with the inscription ‘true artist and true friend’.

Gemma New conductor • Laura van der Heijden cello New Zealand-born Gemma New, a first-time Hallé guest, has been making waves in the USA as a rising star. Lera Auerbach was enthralled from childhood by Ancient Greek mythology. The character of her work, Icarus, personifies the tragic tale of the hero’s ill-fated flight. Walton’s Cello Concerto combines distinguishing aspects of his music – bitter-sweet melancholy and vigorous energy. It’s performed by Laura van der Heijden, who won the 2012 BBC Young Musician of the Year playing this concerto. Copland’s Third Symphony has a euphoric optimism, especially its finale based on his celebrated Fanfare for the Common Man. After the premiere, the conductor Koussevitzky declared, ‘This is the greatest American Symphony. It goes from the heart to the heart’.

Tabita Berglund conductor • Jakob Koranyi cello Tabita Berglund appeared in our summer season of digital concerts, conducting the Hallé with ‘boundless energy’ (The Guardian). We’re delighted to welcome her back to thehalle.vhx.tv for a second appearance. For this broadcast concert she's joined by the young Swedish cellist Jakob Koranyi, described by The Strad as ‘a force to be reckoned with’, who makes his Hallé debut in Dvořák’s concerto. Although mainly written during his US stay, the work reflects his homesickness for Bohemia, as well as being a heart-felt memorial to his beloved sister-in-law. After it, Berglund introduces a haunting miniature, This Too, by her Norwegian compatriot Mette Henriette, whose multi-talents as a composer, saxophone and jazz improviser have established her formidable reputation. Also while in the States, in exile from war-torn Hungary, Bartók wrote a final masterpiece, his virtuosic showpiece Concerto for Orchestra where the sections of the orchestra share the limelight. THE HALLÉ ANCOATS COMMUNITY CHOIR IN REHEARSAL

The Hallé’s education programme directly reaches over 65,000 people each year, of which 40,000 are children and young people, working across the whole community, bringing music in its broadest terms to those who may not attend the concert hall. Hallé musicians work across the whole community in in various settings throughout Greater Manchester and beyond, releasing creativity and raising aspirations through very accessible and practical projects.

The Hallé’s family of choirs welcomes over 600 people, aged 8 upwards, on a weekly basis to sing with inspirational choral leaders. Our youth choirs are open to all by audition and are free to join. Our adult choirs range from the world-renowned Hallé Choir (auditioned symphony chorus) to a range of workplace choirs and the friendly welcome of the Choral Academy and Ancoats Community Choir. The Hallé Youth Orchestra is free and open to any talented young instrumentalists aged 13–19 years, by audition.
