≥ WINTER SEASON 2020/21 | 1
WELCOME Welcome to the Hallé’s 2020-21 Winter Season. This is a particularly happy moment for me personally, having joined the wonderful Hallé family in September. In spite of these extraordinary times, with concert halls currently closed and live audiences sadly excluded, we are thrilled, in association with our partners at The Bridgewater Hall and our own Hallé St Peter’s, to be able to bring you a Winter Season of nine unique concerts. These specially curated performances have been filmed and recorded to the very highest quality for you to watch at home at your leisure. Although for me nothing beats the live experience, this exciting new filmed format enables us to adventure into new ways of presenting the orchestra and enhancing the music. The diverse array of repertoire on offer will be complimented by introductions, interviews and insights from our family of Hallé conductors and special guest artists. The Hallé exists to play for you, our audiences, and the support of so many of you over the past months has been an inspiration and literally kept us going. We are deeply grateful. The orchestra is beyond thrilled to be performing together for you once again, and we hope that you enjoy this illuminating and life-enhancing series of events. On behalf of us all here at the Hallé, thank you for your continued support. Happy Christmas and here’s to a successful New Year.

It is due to the generosity of our sponsors, patrons and every loyal supporter who has been so understanding over the past months, that we are able to perform this concerts. Arts Council England, the Greater Manchester Authorities and the City of Manchester have all been steadfast in their support and have our sincerest thanks. The Hallé is deeply grateful to our partners in The Bridgewater Hall, without whose collaboration these streamed concerts would not be possible.
Wishing you a wonderful Christmas from everyone at Brother. 2019 saw Brother celebrate 30 years of partnership with the Hallé Orchestra, cementing one of the most enduring business partnerships with a cultural organisation in the UK. Brother continues to be one of the Hallé’s most significant sponsors and we continually look to revitalise our relationship. As well as sponsoring their virtual Winter Season of concerts, we have also worked closely with them to create a bespoke educational programme. This has been delivered to students across Greater Manchester, such as the Hallé Impresarios, who work with students aged 14-16, giving them valuable insight into the world of business.
We’re looking forward to being “At your side” again in 2021.

STEPHEN BELL
FANFARE: AND ALL THE BELLS ON EARTH SHALL RING WORLD PREMIERE Specially written for this Christmas celebration, Stephen Bell brings his brass playing expertise to this triumphant fanfare. This fantastic work pays tribute to all the keyworkers that have helped to keep the world turning and looked after those who have needed it during this exceptional year. A fanfare designed to get you in the mood for this Christmas cracker of a concert!
GEORGE FRIDERIC HANDEL (1685-1759)
MESSIAH: ‘LIFT UP YOUR HEADS’ PERFORMED BY THE HALLÉ CHOIR, CONDUCTED BY HALLÉ CHORAL DIRECTOR MATTHEW HAMILTON Enthusiastically received at its premiere on 13 April 1742 in Dublin, then the second city of the British Empire, by the time of Handel’s death in 1759, Messiah was already established as the most popular and frequently performed of all his oratorios. The work is divided into three sections and ‘Lift Up Your Heads’ is taken from half way through Part II. Based on Psalm 24, the chorus consists of a series of questions and answers. Handel divides the choir into two groups: the announcing group, made up of the higher voices; and the questioning group, made up of the lower voices.

JOHN WILLIAMS (B. 1932)
HOME ALONE: SOMEWHERE IN MY MEMORY PERFORMED BY THE HALLÉ CHILDREN’S CHOIR ‘Somewhere in my Memory’ is the opening theme for the classic Christmas comedy Home Alone (1990). The story follows eight-year-old Kevin McCallister, played by Macaulay Culkin, who is accidentally left behind when his family flies off to Paris for their Christmas holidays. Initially relishing being home alone, Kevin soon has to fend off two burglars, leading to numerous slapstick scenes. Composed by John Williams, the film’s score was nominated for an Academy Award, with ‘Somewhere in my Memory’ nominated for Best Original Song. Not just written as the main title, the song also forms the backbone of the soundtrack, being heard throughout the film, either in fragments or in full. Its nostalgic melody is accompanied by the most beautiful lyrics, utterly capturing the Christmas spirit.
PYOTR ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY (1840-1893)
THE NUTCRACKER: DANCE OF THE SUGAR PLUM FAIRY; DANCE OF THE MIRLITONS; TREPAK The Nutcracker, now a perennial Christmas favourite, is testament to Tchaikovsky’s genius as it is full of glorious, hummable tunes recognisable from multiple cultural sources (those of a certain age will remember the old advert for Cadbury’s fruit and nut chocolate), and reworked into several musical genres including a famous Duke Ellington jazz version. The Nutcracker embraces all things child-like as it journeys through an enchanted forest to the Land of the Sweets accompanied by its spellbinding music. Let it wrap you up in a warm glow of all the good things of Christmas with these three extracts.
DANCE OF THE SUGAR PLUM FAIRY Tchaikovsky uses the celeste, a keyboard instrument that had only recently been invented at the time he composed The Nutcracker. Its name comes from its ‘celestial’ or ‘unearthly’ sound – it’s very pretty, like the fairy herself.
≥ WINTER SEASON 2020/21 | 7
DANCE OF THE MIRLITONS Dance of the Mirlitons is also known as Dance of the Reed-Pipes. At this point in the ballet, cakes are offered to the illustrious guests: flutes are used here because the French word ‘mirliton’ means both a toy wind instrument and also a pastry filled with whipped cream.
TREPAK The trepak is based on a lively Russian and Ukrainian folk dance performed by men. Here Clara, the ballet’s main character, is entertained by the wild leaps from the ballet’s comic Russian contingency.
READING ONE: READ BY LEMN SISSAY mbe
‘LET THERE BE PEACE’ BY LEMN SISSAY Lemn Sissay mbe, a poet, playwright, broadcaster and speaker, is a BAFTA nominated International prize winning writer and Chancellor of The University of Manchester. As his own website says … ‘There’s only one person in the world called Lemn Sissay.’
MICHAEL JOHN TROTTA (B. 1978)
VENI, VENI, EMMANUEL PERFORMED BY THE HALLÉ YOUTH CHOIR AND PERCUSSIONISTS FROM THE HALLÉ YOUTH ORCHESTRA CONDUCTED BY HALLÉ YOUTH CHOIR DIRECTOR STUART OVERINGTON Michael Trotta’s ‘Veni, Veni, Emmanuel’, conceived as a dialogue, combines old and new, offering a unique take on an ancient carol updated for modern audiences. The text, which first appears in the 18th century, is based on the much older ‘O’ Antiphons which have their origins in the 9th century. A short repeated melodic phrase on ‘Veni, veni’ and the use of percussion infuse this traditional Advent carol with unrelenting energy.

TIMOTHY REDMOND (B. 1971)
SLINKI MALINKI’S CHRISTMAS CRACKERS WORLD PREMIERE NARRATED BY TOM REDMOND Slinky Malinki’s Christmas Crackers is a hilarious rhyming story written by Lynley Dodd. Timothy Redmond has set this popular children’s story to music, which will be accompanied by illustrations from the book in this world premiere performance. The most mischievous cat of all, Slinky Malinki hides in the shadows watching as the family put up and decorate their Christmas tree in all its finery, with the fairy on the top. But will the little rascal be able to resist the twinkle and tinsel of the glorious and tempting tree? TOM REDMOND NARRATOR Tom Redmond is a presenter, horn player and animateur specialising in music education. He devises and presents interactive concerts for schools and families for orchestras and festivals around the world. He was involved with the BBC’s Ten Pieces project, leading creative workshops with its celebrity ambassadors, and was the orchestra consultant for the project’s e-book, as well as being a regular voice on BBC Radio 3. From September 2020, Tom took up the post of joint Principal, alongside Nicola Smith, at Chetham’s School of Music.
TRAD. ARR. WILLCOCKS
AWAY IN A MANGER PERFORMED BY THE HALLÉ CHOIR AND HALLÉ CHILDREN’S CHOIR First published in the late nineteenth century, ‘Away in a Manger’ was originally attributed to a German priest, Martin Luther. However, it has subsequently been realised that the carol is more likely to have first been in the Evangelical Lutheran Sunday School collection, Little Children’s Book for Schools and Families. Whatever its history, the voices of the Hallé’s oldest and youngest singers bring to life one of Britain’s most popular Christmas carols of all time.

SAMUEL COLERIDGE-TAYLOR (1875-1912) ARR. SYDNEY BAYNES
CHRISTMAS OVERTURE This wonderful Christmas Overture, written by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, is five minutes of pure orchestral festive music incorporating all the old favourite carols. Listen out for God Rest You Merry Gentlemen, Good King Wenceslas and Hark the Herald Angels Sing and many more. See how many you can spot.
FELIX BERNARD (1897-1944)/RICHARD B. ‘DICK’ SMITH (1901-1935) ARR. PAUL CAMPBELL
WINTER WONDERLAND PERFORMED BY THE HALLÉ YOUTH CHOIR The lyrics of this Christmas-time standard were written in 1931 by Richard B. ‘Dick’ Smith while he was being treated for tuberculosis in a Pennsylvania sanatorium – the sight of children playing in a snow-covered local park was all the inspiration he needed. It’s been recorded numerous times, though perhaps the most well-known versions are those by The Andrews Sisters and Perry Como. Football fans all over the country have co-opted its melody, often to un-sportingly (and unseasonably) taunt their rivals before and during Christmas fixtures.
READING THREE: READ BY GUY GARVEY
‘THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS’ ATTRIBUTED TO CLEMENT CLARKE MOORE Elbow frontman Guy Garvey is an old friend of the Hallé. As well as Elbow, Guy has produced other Manchester bands and his gruff but lilting voice can be heard reading to the next generation on CBeebies Bedtime Stories as well as presenting on BBC 6 Music.

IRVING BERLIN (1888-1989) ARR. PAUL BATEMAN
WHITE CHRISTMAS PERFORMED BY THE HALLÉ CHOIR According to the Guinness Book of Records, Bing Crosby’s original version of ‘White Christmas’ is the biggest-selling single of all time with estimated worldwide sales of around 50 million (if sales of the numerous cover versions are added to this, the figure goes up to a staggering 100 million). As with so many Yuletide hits, legend has it that it was written at the height of summer – in this case by a hotel pool in Phoenix, Arizona in 1940. Apparently, Berlin told his secretary, ‘Grab your pen and take down this song. I just wrote the best song I’ve ever written ... heck, I just wrote the best song that anybody’s ever written!’ It surged in popularity after the United States entered the Second World War. Millions of servicemen abroad related to its nostalgic recollection of Christmases past and The Armed Forces Network radio station was (pardon the pun!) simply snowed under with requests for the song.
WHITE CHRISTMAS I’m dreaming of a white Christmas Just like the ones I used to know Where the treetops glisten And children listen To hear sleigh bells in the snow I’m dreaming of a white Christmas With every Christmas card I write May your days be merry and bright And may all your Christmases be white
JAMES PIERPONT (1822-1893) ARR. BILL CONNOR
JINGLE BELLS James Pierpont wrote the words and music of ‘Jingle Bells’ (originally titled ‘One Horse Open Sleigh’) in 1857 for a Thanksgiving service at his local church in Boston, Massachusetts. It proved so popular that it was revived the following Christmas. Ever since, the song’s evocation of tinkling sleigh bells and horse-propelled winter-time travel never fails to summon the Christmas spirit, so board the sled and enjoy the ride! 14 | ≥ WINTER SEASON 2020/21
GRUBER ARR. DARIUS BATTIWALLA
SILENT NIGHT WORLD PREMIERE PERFORMED BY THE HALLÉ CHOIR, CONDUCTED BY HALLÉ CHORAL DIRECTOR MATTHEW HAMILTON ‘Silent Night’ or ‘Stille Nacht’ was first performed in a small village church in presentday Austria on Christmas Eve 1818. Originally a poem, the words were written by a young priest but following flooding at his church which damaged the organ, he took them to Franz Gruber, a schoolmaster and organist in a nearby village, and asked him to compose a melody and guitar accompaniment for that night’s mass. It began its world-wide journey almost immediately via travelling families of folk singers, reportedly become a favourite of Frederick William IV of Prussia in the 1840s. It remains a popular carol to this day and has been recorded by many singers, across many different genres. Bing Crosby’s 1935 version is the fourth best-selling single of all time! Here the Hallé Choir will share this new rendition arranged by Darius Battiwalla.
READING FOUR: READ BY PHIL JONES mbe
‘A DISTANCED CHRISTMAS’ BY PHIL JONES Phil Jones mbe is Managing Director of Brother UK, a print technology organisation that has worked in partnership with the Hallé for more than 30 years. A 25-year veteran of the I.T. industry, Phil was awarded an MBE in recognition of his services to business.
MARTA KEEN ARR. ALYWN GREEN
CHRISTMAS ON THE BEACH AT WAIKIKI PERFORMED BY THE HALLÉ CHILDREN’S CHOIR Showcasing the fabulous Hallé Children’s Choir, ‘Christmas on the beach at Waikiki’ is always hugely popular with both members of the audience and choir alike. Snowmen and the lovelorn Snow Maiden wouldn’t last very long in the Hawaiian sunshine but who hasn’t, occasionally, dreamed of escaping the cold and heading to the tropics for Christmas? Marta Lynn Keen’s spectacular favourite really goes for the big effect rather than seasonal intimacy. Don’t forget your sun glasses! ≥ WINTER SEASON 2020/21 | 15
TRAD ARR. WILLCOCKS
O COME ALL YE FAITHFUL PERFORMED BY THE HALLÉ CHOIR ‘O Come, All Ye Faithful’ is a traditional carol with a very malleable history. Attributed to so many different writers and composers over the years and translated into almost every language known to man, it is not clear who actually wrote the work. This version was arranged by Sir David Willcocks, originally published in Carols for Choirs in 1961. ‘O Come, All Ye Faithful’, also known as ‘Adeste Fideles’ is traditionally the penultimate hymn sung at the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols by the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge, and the final anthem sung during Christmas Eve Midnight Mass in the Vatican.
O COME ALL YE FAITHFUL O come all ye faithful Joyful and triumphant O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem Come and behold him Born the King of Angels O come let us adore him, O come let us adore him O come let us adore him, Christ the Lord God of God, light of light Lo, he abhors not the Virgin’s womb Very God, begotten, not created: O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord Sing choirs of angels Sing in exultation Sing all ye citizens of heaven above Glory to God In the highest O come let us adore him, O come let us adore him O come let us adore him, Christ the Lord

LEROY ANDERSON (1908-1975)
SLEIGH RIDE Leroy Anderson was a true giant of American light music who produced a string of inventive and often humorous instrumental novelties. We draw this seasonal concert to a close in horse-drawn motion with his evocative wintry journey, Sleigh Ride. The clip-clop of hooves, whip-cracks and the neighing of an indignant horse are all joyfully rendered in a piece that came to him during a heatwave in 1946!

BROTHER AND THE HALLÉ OVER 30 YEARS OF UNRIVALLED PARTNERSHIP The Hallé would like to thank Brother for their sponsorship of this Christmas Concert, which has enabled us to make the programme available free for audiences everywhere to enjoy this Festive Season. The partnership between Brother and the Hallé is one of the most enduring business partnerships with a cultural organisation in the UK ever and outstripping all other orchestra sponsorships by decades! Whilst the beginnings of the relationship and the early enthusiasm for the Hallé’s work was driven largely by Brother’s first European Chairman – Kazuaki Tazaki – the foundation of this partnership has been solidified through many years of support from a large group of extraordinary Brother Executives. The first Brother International sponsored concert opened the 1989/90 Hallé season with a performance of Britten’s War Requiem conducted by Stanislaw Skrowaczewski and given in the presence of Her Royal Highness the Princess Margaret Countess of Snowdon. The partnership was further cemented when the Hallé and its new Music Director – the American / Japanese Conductor, Kent Nagano – visited Japan and Hong Kong during a major Kazuaki Tazaki and former Hallé CEO Clive Smart tour in 1996. The Orchestra visited the home of Brother in Nagoya and played to a full concert hall, after which they were entertained by Brother Executives in a post-concert reception. The relationship between the Hallé and Brother was well publicised in Japan and the warmth and enthusiasm with which the orchestra were greeted is remembered by many players and members of the management team to this day.
20 | ≥ WINTER SEASON 2020/21
Immediately after the Japan Tour, Brother partnered with the Hallé to open The Bridgewater Hall in September 1996. The company was the sponsor of the very first concert, and therefore the very first note to be played by the Hallé in this wonderful, world class concert hall in the heart of Manchester. Brother continue to be one of the Hallé’s most significant sponsors and we continually look for ways to renew and revitalise our relationship. For example, Brother are now sponsors of some of the Hallé’s most important education projects such as the schools programme – Hallé for Youth – which welcomes over 10,000 school children to The Bridgwater Hall every year. Another project supported by Brother is Impresarios, which works with teenage / 6th Form students, giving them valuable insight into the world of business and testing their creativity and business acumen through a robust and highly regarded project. Senior Brother staff, including Brother UK Managing Director, Phil Jones, have been directly involved in the classroom in delivering Impresarios.

During 2020, Brother were instrumental in assisting the Hallé in advising and aiding new signage at Hallé St Peter’s to allow us to open and operate in a Covid secure manner. Phil Jones directly advised the Hallé on how to manage the spaces, and a team from Brother UK visited the sight and developed signage across the building to allow for one way systems, and prompts to distance and hand sanitise.

Concerts and music still sit at the heart of the partnership with a clear alliance of brands and principles, a commitment to international excellence, pride in our shared histories, and a dedication to being an integral part of the fabric of Manchester life. It is therefore fitting that they should partner with the Hallé on this very special Christmas concert. The Hallé’s Christmas Concert in 2020 features an array of carols, songs and Christmas music, is an extra special Christmas gift from Brother and the Hallé to everyone in Manchester, around the country and throughout the world. Phil Jones, Managing Director of Brother UK, who was asked to record a message to everyone enjoying the concert more than stepped up to the plate. He has written and will read a poem reflecting on the past year reminding us all of the opportunities that Christmas offers still, for people to virtually come together, celebrate and enjoy themselves. It perfectly partners the concert and the message it will bring. Phil Jones mbe, Managing Director of Brother UK said: ‘We at Brother are incredibly proud of the partnership with the Hallé. It is wonderful to reflect on all that we have achieved over the years. It is a testament to the great friendship between the organisations that we have continued to grow, and flourish, and to bring real value to people across the region through our support for the Hallé’s artistic programme, and the projects that we run together. ‘It is a great joy to be supporting the Hallé to bring this special Christmas programme to audiences across the country, and worldwide, for free this Christmas. We hope it will bring some festive cheer to all!’ David Butcher, Chief Executive of the Hallé said: ‘Brother are the Hallé’s longest serving sponsor. They are amongst our most valued business supporters and have always held a special place in the hearts of our players and the entire Hallé team. We deeply appreciate Brother’s continued support for this, the Hallé’s Christmas present to everyone. It is typical of Brother and particularly of Phil Jones to go that step further and create such a unique and appropriate message for us all. We hope everyone will enjoy our concert and Phil’s contribution and will be able to join us for some of our other concerts.’

STEPHEN BELL CONDUCTOR
Described as ‘one of the most gifted younger British conductors’ (International Record Review), Stephen Bell is in demand with a wide variety of international orchestras. His diverse repertoire, versatility and aptitude for communication with audiences of all genres and ages have led to exciting conducting projects with an eclectic range of artists.
24 | ≥ WINTER SEASON 2020/21
Past highlights have included conducting the Queen’s Jubilee Concert at Chatsworth House, a tribute concert for Stanley Black at the Royal Festival Hall, a gala event for Prince Charles at Windsor Castle, the memorial concert for Alistair Cooke at Westminster Abbey, the award-winning Pitch Perfect for BBC TV’s Children in Need at Wembley with the BBC Singers, the televised Music Nation concert from the Clyde Auditorium in Glasgow, and pop legends Texas with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra at Barrowland, Glasgow. Stephen’s discography includes critically acclaimed CDs on the ASV, Naxos and Dutton labels, including two with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, a disc devoted to the music of Gordon Jacob and three world premiere recordings with violist Roger Chase and the BBC Concert Orchestra. 2016 saw three new releases, including A Christmas Celebration with the Hallé on its own label and a collaboration with awardwinning vocalist Clare Teal on MUD Records. He frequently appears on Classic FM as well as on BBC radio and television. From 2005 to 2010, Stephen was invited to conduct the annual televised BBC Proms in the Park with the BBC Philharmonic, and since 2011, he has appeared every year on the live TV broadcasts of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra’s Last Night of the Proms celebrations. He made his Royal Albert Hall Proms debut with the hugely successful Doctor Who Prom in 2008, returning in 2012 for a Family Matinee Prom with the Royal Northern Sinfonia and again in 2014 for two televised CBeebies Proms with the BBC Philharmonic. The Folk Prom in the 2018 season marked his first Prom with the BBC Concert Orchestra, returning in the 2019 season. In 2009, he was appointed Artistic Director of the City of Oxford Orchestra and, in 2013, he was delighted to take up the post of Associate Conductor of the Hallé Pops in 2013. He studied at the Royal College of Music under the renowned conductor, Norman Del Mar. In March 2020, the arts scene in the UK came to a screeching halt. Stephen’s final live concert before the world went mad was in Manchester with the Hallé. As the father of three primary school aged children, lockdown forced Stephen to become a reluctant school teacher, dealing with online learning platforms, ensuring the children stayed fit and healthy, with the help of PE with Joe, and cooking. It has been a torrid year, with just one day of work since March. Stephen took a conscious decision not to learn any new music, finding it hard to learn a piece without knowing when a return to performance would be possible. Since September, Stephen has spent time working on this wonderful Christmas concert. He is absolutely thrilled that it has been possible - a Herculean team effort.

26 | ≥ WINTER SEASON 2020/21
The Hallé, numbered amongst the world’s top symphonic ensembles, continues to seek ways to enhance and refresh what it undertakes, with aspirations to provide leadership through performance standards, education, understanding and training. 2020 sees the Hallé embarking on its very first digital season. During its 162-year history, the organisation has weathered many storms – from two world wars to financial crises, volcanic ash clouds and now a global pandemic – and not being allowed to work and make music with immediate effect in March 2020 was truly devastating for its passionate players and staff. To be able to return to the stages of The Bridgewater Hall and Hallé St Peter’s to once again make music for loyal and supportive audiences has the feeling of a true renaissance. Founded by Sir Charles Hallé in Manchester, the Hallé gave its first concert in the city’s Free Trade Hall on 30 January 1858. Following the death of Sir Charles, the orchestra continued to develop under the guidance of such distinguished figures as Dr Hans Richter, Sir Hamilton Harty, Sir John Barbirolli and Sir Mark Elder. The Hallé has received many awards, notably from the Royal Philharmonic Society and the South Bank Awards, for its work in the concert hall and celebrated collaborations with other orchestras and Manchester organisations. The Hallé has a distinguished history of acclaimed performances, in Manchester and around Britain, as well as televised concerts, frequent radio broadcasts and international tours. Since launching its own recording label in 2003, a number of the Hallé’s recordings have won prestigious awards including five Gramophone Awards, two Diapasons d’Or and a BBC Music Magazine Award. Over a quarter of a million people heard the Hallé live in the year up to April 2020 and more than 65,000 of those were inspired by the Hallé’s pioneering education programme. Working across the whole community – from schools to universities, care homes to prisons – to bring music in its broadest terms to those who may not attend the concert hall, the programme releases creativity and raises aspirations through very accessible and practical projects. Winter 2020 sees the launch of Goddess Gaia, a digital resource for schools featuring a twenty-minute animation and soundtrack based on a story by Tony Mitton. The Hallé is a Registered Charity No. 223882

≥ CHOIR MATTHEW HAMILTON CHORAL DIRECTOR Founded alongside the Orchestra by Sir Charles Halle in 1858, the Halle Choir usually gives around 15 concerts a year, as well as featuring regularly on the Hallé’s multiaward-winning CD label. Recent highlights included featuring in the Hallé’s Beethoven 250 celebrations in early 2020, a concert performance of Act 2 of Fidelio, Schoenberg’s Gurrelieder, Berlioz’s The Damnation of Faust both in Manchester and at the Edinburgh International Festival, and Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius and Act 3 of Wagner’s Parsifal in York Minster. In 2019 the Choir toured to Spain, where it gave two concerts with the Orquesta Sinfonica de Castilla y Leon and an a cappella concert of English music. The Choir performs regularly at the BBC Proms, and last season it performed Tippett’s A Child of Our Time in Sheffield and Mahler’s ‘Resurrection’ Symphony in Nottingham. Made up of 170 singers from all over the North-West and from all walks of life, the Halle Choir offers a range of additional activities, including individual coaching and social events, as well as regular rehearsals. When the UK arts scene was shut down in March 2020, it did not stop the Hallé Choir from singing. Rehearsals moved online and the Choir began to rehearse every chorus in Handel’s Messiah, before creating a virtual choir performance of Meeresstille und glückliche Fahrt by Beethoven. September saw the return of socially-distanced, in-person rehearsals until they were forced back online. Choir members were thrilled that restrictions were eased, enabling them to take part in this concert in person.
MATTHEW HAMILTON CHORAL DIRECTOR Choral Director at the Hallé since 2015, Matthew Hamilton also holds the posts of Associate Director of the London Symphony Chorus and Musical Director of the New London Chamber Choir (NLCC). As a guest conductor he has appeared with groups including the BBC Singers, Netherlands Chamber Choir, Choeur de Radio France, ChorWerk Ruhr, BBC Symphony Chorus, CBSO Chorus and the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain, as well as the Halle, Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Manchester Camerata. He read music at Oxford, before studying at the University of Manchester and the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama (RWCMD). In 2010 he won the Bramstrup Conducting Award (Denmark) and in 2018 he was made an inaugural Associate of the RWCMD. Matthew Hamilton has prepared choirs for conductors including Sir Mark Elder, Gustavo Dudamel, Edward Gardner and Gianandrea Noseda, and for festivals 28 | ≥ WINTER SEASON 2020/21
including Edinburgh, Manchester, Brighton and Spitalfields as well as the BBC Proms, where he has worked on music from Birtwistle to the Pet Shop Boys. He has chorusmastered or conducted first performances of many works by composers including Harrison Birtwistle, Nico Muhly, Ēriks Ešenvalds and Emily Howard. In addition to his work with the Hallé, recent career highlights have included preparing the choirs for Stockhausen’s Donnerstag aus Licht at the Southbank Centre, conducting the RSNO and RSNO choruses in their Christmas concerts last year and working, for the first time, with the National Youth Orchestra.
≥ YOUTH CHOIR
STUART OVERINGTON DIRECTOR MATTHEW ROUGHLEY ASSISTANT DIRECTOR Established in 2003 and recognised as one of the country’s leading mixed-voice youth choirs, the Hallé Youth Choir is for talented young singers, aged 13-19 years, across the North West. The Youth Choir usually performs with the Hallé and a variety of other ensembles, as well as independently. Each summer, members enjoy a residential course and tour with visits recently to Italy, Dublin, Belgium, Scotland, Paris and Barcelona. The Youth Choir covers a wide range of diverse repertoire with recent highlights including the re-opening of Hallé St Peter’s, a hub for Hallé Connect, all our activity away from the concert platform including the Youth Choir, taking part in the Hallé’s Beethoven 250 celebrations, the music from Star Wars and Harry Potter, appearances at the BBC Proms and a tour to London, Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius in York Minster and a performance with Snow Patrol on BBC Sport Relief. The Youth Choir was honoured to sing at the National Civic Memorial Service for the first anniversary of the Manchester Arena attack. The Youth Choir features on several of the Hallé’s own label recordings, Elbow’s album ‘build a rocket boys!’, subsequently performing with the Manchester band on Comic Relief and Later ... with Jools Holland, and more recently on Mercury Prize nominated artist C Duncan’s latest album. When the pandemic forced the arts to stop performing in March 2020, the Hallé Youth Choir continued to sing. The cancelled summer tour to Scotland was replaced with an online quiz, held jointly with the Hallé Youth Training Choir, and the release on social media of a virtual performance of Moses Hogan’s ‘We Shall Walk Through the Valley in Peace’. The Youth Choir has continued rehearsing online this term. Members ≥ WINTER SEASON 2020/21 | 29
have been delighted to take part in this concert in person, following the easing of some restrictions. The Hallé Concerts Society is very grateful to The D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust, The Zochonis Charitable Trust, PZ Cussons and many individual benefactors for their continued support of the Youth Choir.
STUART OVERINGTON DIRECTOR A choral director and vocal leader, Stuart Overington is known for his energetic and engaging approach to training young voices. He took up the role of Hallé Youth Choir Director in September 2016, a post he holds alongside directing the Hallé Youth Training Choir and Ancoats Community Choir. Stuart is also Director of the Chetham’s School of Music Chamber Choir and the Royal Northern College of Music’s Symphony Chorus and Chamber Choir. Stuart studied at the Royal Northern College of Music as both a singer and conductor. Whilst there, he performed in a number of operas and concerts including roles in their production of Monteverdi’s II ritorno d’Ulisse and as the lead character ‘Bobby’ in Sondheim’s Company. He has performed as soloist with the RNCM Big Band and Symphony Orchestra and appeared at a number of festivals including the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival and London Jazz Festival. As a freelance artist, he has worked for numerous creative organisations including the BBC, Manchester International Festival, Royal Exchange Theatre, Opera North and The Royal Opera House. Stuart has also had a number of songs commissioned for school singing with many being published in the Boosey & Hawkes bestselling series Singing Sherlock.
≥ CHILDREN’S CHOIR
SHIRLEY COURT DIRECTOR MICHELLE ROBINSON ASSISTANT DIRECTOR
Founded in 2008, the Hallé Children’s Choir is made up of over 90 children aged 8-12 (academic years 4-8) from across Greater Manchester and beyond. It offers a chance to have the very best possible introduction to singing at the highest level in a range of singing styles. Children from all walks of life are welcome to audition; all we ask is that they enjoy singing and are prepared for the challenge of developing their ability whilst having fun! The Hallé Children’s Choir usually perform in the Hallé’s Carol Concerts, the Hallé Youth Ensembles matinee and a summer concert with the Hallé. The Children’s Choir have performed many world premieres commissioned by the Hallé Concerts 30 | ≥ WINTER SEASON 2020/21
Society including Jonathan Dove’s A Brief History of Creation, Edward Gregson’s The Salamander and the Moonraker and Carl Davis’ The Last Train to Tomorrow, based on the Kindertransport of 1938-39. The Children’s Choir have also performed Mahler’s Symphony No.8 and Berlioz’s La Damnation de Faust, as well as at the Just So Festival at Rode Hall. In January 2014, the Children’s Choir took part in the television adaptation of Victoria Wood’s play That Day We Sang, aired on BBC 2 on Boxing Day 2014. After this collaboration the late great Victoria Wood became the Patron of the Hallé Children’s Choir and we are thrilled to have dedicated our rehearsal base in the Oglesby Centre at Hallé St Peter’s to her. March 2020 saw the UK arts scene stop overnight, but the Hallé Children’s Choir showed resilience and creativity in how its young members continued to sing together. Over the summer the children rehearsed ‘Can’t we sing together!’ which they performed as a virtual choir on social media. September saw in-person auditions and some small, socially-distanced, group rehearsals before a return to online sessions. The children have loved having the opportunity to take part in this concert in person. The Hallé Concerts Society is very grateful to the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, The Victoria Wood Foundation, The D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust, The Zochonis Charitable Trust, PZ Cussons, Carex and many individual benefactors for their continued support of the Children’s Choir.
SHIRLEY COURT DIRECTOR The founding Hallé Children’s Choir Director, Shirley Court is nationally known for her ability to motivate and inspire young singers of all ages and capabilities. In 2006 she was awarded with an Honorary Degree from the University of Leicester for her work as a conductor of Youth Choirs and Music in Schools. Whilst in Leicestershire her award-winning girls’ choir, The Chanterelles, won the Llangollen International Eisteddfod Youth Choir section and were runners up in the Sainsbury’s Choir of the Year Competition. In 2009 the Chanterelles re-formed as a ladies choir and won the Ladies category at the 2010 Eisteddfod. Now made up of 50 young ladies, the choir performs three or four times a year. Shirley has conducted the Massed Choir of 600 voices at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the Music for Youth’s School Prom on three occasions and was the conductor of the Senior Girls and Junior CBSO Youth Choruses from 1995 until 2009. She acts as a consultant on many National Singing initiatives, delivers INSET courses for teachers and runs singing days for children and young people. Shirley is delighted to be the Programme Leader for the Hallé Leading School Choirs Course for all teachers who run school choirs. ≥ WINTER SEASON 2020/21 | 31
