ur generation has never experienced a summer so in the shadows. We should be sun-bathing under the palm trees and sipping a cooler on the rocks. Rather our sun is shy, our plants are plastic and our drinks are part of an Eat-out to Help-Out deal. Summer Lovin’ turns to Summer Time Sadness to quote the musical icons. As the lockdown measures have further eased to give us a beam of hope, we wear our masks like armour in a battlefield, trying to enjoy the time we have before a potential second wave hits the shore. How strong is our sail, and will it hold up during the storm? Word on the street is ‘to be continued.’ The August edition presents unique perspectives on taboo subjects by amplifying the importance of spreading awareness to overcome obstacles of inequality. The Features section includes an article on modern-day slavery, and how this operation is disguised right under our noses. For Profit’s Sake details the foundation of how and why we are contributing to the problem. Chapter Two of Bad Aura makes an appearance in the Art section, the story that follows the lives of three homeless girls takes a dark turn. The Lifestyle section now has a Meet The Team interview for each of our writers. You may also watch a video version on our Youtube Channel Corridor TV- where our writers express and connect with their readers on a more personal level. The magazine is now split into two halves, the first is the English articles and the second is the Turkish articles. We hope to improve and grow each edition with your support and feedback. How To Fix Time DR. OSMAN KÖMÜRCÜ W R I T E R & E D I TO R A S S I S TA N T

hat is time, where does it begin and end? Was there a concept of time before the big bang and will time ever come to an end? Will there be a time when our solar system expires? Is it something that flows from everything, through all of us, in a straight line independent of space? According to Galileo and Newton, which are accepted as the fathers of classical physics, time is absolute, unchanging, constant, flowing independently of everything. Especially when it comes to obsolete time, Newton comes to mind. Have you heard of the young man working in a patent office in the city of Bern and what he wrote in his diary? “I’m very sorry Newton, Descartes, Galileo, Maxwell,” and dozens of other scientists, dozens of names that changed history. He was throwing shade to these greats. “Guys, I’m sorry, but it wasn’t like that.” Albert Einstein was reported to have said, This phenomenon or this fact is not my concern. I want to learn the way God thinks. The rest is for me. I am a man who will die while trying to write the theory of everything, to understand and explain time, we have to go back in time a little. Where it all started. We will not reach Greek mythology or ancient philosophers. A subject Aristotle is thinking about Copernicus. Let’s go to the time when the phenomenon of time was studied scientifically for the first time, namely the 16th century. Galileo, Newton, Barrow, Descartes… An age of enlightenment dating back to the 17th century. It takes almost its final form with Isaac Barrow and Isaac Newton. According to all these scientists, the time defined as absolute and universal in this way is also called Newton’s time.

believed that time and space are completely separate elements of objective reality. And he believed that if nothing remained in the universe, it would continue to exist on its own. What did Shakespeare say? “The world is a game scene” and according to Newton, the only thing that didn’t change in this scene was time. Gravity changed the world radically, not being touched when describing the laws of motion. That’s why there was a problem. A problem that Newton couldn’t solve during his lifetime. A problem he thought “God has a job, it is not possible for us to perceive.” The most obvious indication of this was hidden in the movement of the planet Mercury in our solar system. Newton’s laws could precisely calculate everything from the motion of the apple to the earth’s orbit, but Mercury did not comply with these calculations. There was a deviation in his orbit all the time. Here is the place where he says “This must be the work of God”. Some scientists even thought that it was another planet called Vulcan, which we couldn’t see when trying to explain it.

This concept of time, which is considered to be absolute, was the same for everyone and could be measured, but not perceived, at a constant pace at every point in the universe. Newton especially NEWS MAGAZINE

However, the deviation in the orbit of Mercury planet could be explained by the gravitational effect of another planet. Time would not be contained in a single space. Now I want you to forget everything you know about time. Let us forget how time passes, flows in a straight line, we live and go in a line between birth and death, time is the same for everyone, everyone lives the same time everywhere, regardless of how you live. Because we have to destroy this perception completely. Wilhelm Leibniz says, “There were events that happened before, after or simultaneously for Leibniz. Time was just the way we organize these relationships in our minds.” Then, Immanuel Kant joined in independently from a more philosophical perspective, he argued time is not spontaneous, or a relationship between spontaneous things. According to Kant, time was just the way our minds organize the experiences we have. Kant argued that spontaneous things are outside our minds and independent of us, and not actually in time. But Albert Einstein would put an end to all these discussions. He would publish four incredible studies, including the Special Relativity Theory in 1905, which is known as the miraculous year of physics and Einstein, and then published the ‘general relativity theory’ after more than a decade of camping period and would write his name in history. What is the time? As a fan of Newton, this was the question Einstein asked. Einstein was sure soNEWSof MAGAZINE

mething after seeing Maxwell’s equations. The only thing fixed in the universe was the speed of light. Regardless of where you stand, wherever you stand, the only thing that is constantly moving at the same speed is the movement of light. In this case, something had to change in Newton’s laws. Something could not be fixed. Especially time could not be fixed. Let’s proceed with an example, with a disaster scenario. A scenario in which the sun disappears. One day, if our sun suddenly disappeared in a way we had not noticed before. If we consider this scenario with Newton’s law of gravitation, this is what will happen. The Earth instantly emerges from its orbit and travels through space. Because you can think of it as if there is a rope between two objects that apply attraction to each other according to Newton’s law of gravitation. A constant and instant power. But according to Einstein, this is impossible. Because of the speed of light that is constant in the universe and nothing can exceed the speed of light. The speed of light is our universal limit. And it takes about 8 minutes for sunlight to reach our world. Since the gravitational force also moves exactly at the speed of light, if the sun disappeared now, we could live as if nothing had happened for 8 minutes. This finding was one of the most important findings in the history of science. We could live under Newton’s laws without even realising it. This is not something we can perceive in daily life, but Newton was able to accurately calculate the motion of objects in our solar system, as far as we can perceive in our daily life. What may not be a problem for us may be a gigantic problem for people like Einstein. So how did Einstein come to this conclusion? In fact, he realised this when he was 16 years old. Thought experiments are famous for him. He could awaken any situation in his mind and look for answers. At the age of 16, he had a train and two people in a thought experiment he had set up in his head. One is on the train while the other is looking at the train from the outside. The train is moving at very high speed. Let’s assume that there are two trees at the back of this train at intervals of 100 meters and lightning falls on these two trees at the same time. According to Einstein’s thought experiment, this event takes place at the7 same time for the person standing outside

the train. Lightning strikes both trees simultaneously. But from the point of view of the person who is on the train that goes fast, first lightning falls on the first tree and then after another. Now, the concepts of relativity have started to make more sense. The same thing and two different people. How is it possible? Now let’s try a different example of how the speed of light is constant. In everyday life, the velocity as we perceive is also relative and is calculated according to the reference point in the form of addition and subtraction. So consider two cars. Let both of them run 60 km an hour side by side. For people in the two cars, the speed of the other car is zero relative to their reference points. So it is not moving. But when the other one goes up to 80 km, the vehicle that moves at a speed of 60 km is moving at a speed of 20 km. This is the basic law. But it doesn’t work at the speed of light. For example, the speed of light is exactly ‘299.792.458’ meters per second. But in terms of ease of calculation, let’s say 300 million meters per second and build a spaceship and this spaceship can travel at 150 million meters per second. And let’s move next to a particle of light. Normally, when we measure the velocity of this light particle from this space shuttle, the result should not hit 150 million / m per second, right? Not here. Whether you’re measuring from where you stood, or reaching half the speed of light or 90%. Wherever you measure, the speed of the light will be exactly ‘299.792.458’ meters per second. We must have heard. E = mc2 The most known equation of physics. Here E energy m mass c2 is the square of the light girl. And when Einstein first wrote this equation, he wrote m = E / c2. So energy and mass can change places.

impossible to exceed the speed of light. Here, the main point that pushes our limits of perception is speed times/time = distance according to the physics we perceive. But when you put the speed of light into this equation, the physics rules do not work as we know them. Therefore, there must be differences in time and distance. Let’s sum it up with a final example if you want. Let’s talk about twin sisters named Ali and Alison. Let both be astronauts and join an experiment to prove this law to us. Let Ali stay in the world and Alison is on a journey that will last for 1 year with a space shuttle that can reach 99.997% of the speed of light. Assuming that they are both 30 years old when this journey begins when Ali and Alison meet after one year of travel, Alison will be 31 years old, but Ali who is in the world will be 81 years old. For someone moving at this speed, time will slow down a lot. And Ali and Alison will probably be the first twins to be 51 years apart. Isn’t it hard to perceive? One’s mind cannot accept it. But even just one example that affects our daily life may be enough for us to understand the importance of this theory. GPS systems as such. Since the satellites in orbit move at very high speeds, there is little time difference and this time is synchronised differently. Otherwise, when you look at applications like Google map right now, your location could deviate for kilo-meters and we could not locate anything exactly. And all this was a very short summary of the Special Relativity Theory that Albert Einstein was published in 1905. If you are aware I have not even mentioned gravitation and general relativity theory yet. Or from the “Quantum” world where Einstein is stuck. At a certain point for all these laws, theories, and examples I have mentioned. What does this mean for my daily life? I still find myself thinking about the universe. Everyone and everything consists of energy. Time is completely an illusion, therefore so are our perspective on events, troubles, worries, joys, sorrows. It radically changes my perspective on life, the universe, what is happening, all social problems, politics, matter, psychology, overselves… So, let’s see what the future technology will teach us about the universe.

In fact, energy and mass are the same. So everything you see, you know, everything we can concretely observe. You. Me. We are made up of energy. For example, let’s take a paper clip. If we could convert each atom that made this paper to energy, TNT would emit an energy equivalent to explosives at the force of 18 kilos (18kt). And this means a force close to the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. So Einstein says this; As the speed of an object increases, its energy increases and therefore its mass increases, and as it gets closer to the speed of light, it needs infinite energy and consequently mass to maintain this speed, which is whyNEWS it isMAGAZINE

ndian Independence Day is celebrated on the 15th of August every year with great joy and happiness throughout the country. 15th August is the most memorable day in the history of India because on this very day, in 1947, Indians got freedom from the British rule, who ruled over India for nearly two centuries. Europeans were always attracted to India because of its rich prosperity and the existence of trading

opportunities. The first European who came to India with the intension of developing trading relations and later their colonies were the Portuguese. In the year 1498, Vasco da Gama discovered the sea route to India and went back to his native country with a cargo which was sold for sixty times the cost of his voyage. That huge profit forced other Europeans such as Dutch, French and British to establish their trade with India. After the profit with Indian trade, the Britishers monopolised trade with India and ruled over. This resulted in many battles between the United Kingdom and other European traders. The mutual distrust and

hatred amongst the Indian rulers paved the way for Britishers establishing their supremacy in India. Consequently, Britain became the super-power in India having all the rights, whether it is related to trade or administration. The British rulers always followed the policy of exploitation of the country which led Indians to think about their freedom from foreign rule and their policies. India’s freedom struggle can be said to have started soon after the Battle of Plassey in 1757. The Indians, since, cherished a desire to drive away from the foreign conquerors from their motherland. A century later in 1857, when the flame of patriotism burnt the walls of religion, laws, fear and Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs, all became united and raised their voice against the partial rule. It was the first War of Independence, though British historians referred to the national movement as a ‘mere mutiny of Indian sepoys’. But the latest researches have stated ‘the 1857 movement had its seeds in the patriotic urge of the Indians to make their motherland free.’ The revolt sowed the seeds of that tree which became fruitful in 1947 when India finally became free.

A highly significant feature of life in India after 1857 was the emergence of the middle classes as a political force. The first impact of Western political thought, numerous reformist movements in the 18th century grew economic and political discontent. Improvements in the means of transport and communications and the introduction of the printing press and several other factors stimulated the growth of the well-organised middle-

tion and were ultimately forced to leave India and granting freedom to Indians in the year 1947. The plant of independence, sprouted in 1947, was the culmination of more than a century of sacrifices offered by numberless patriots. A country of many religions, traditions, cultures and customs, it was and is the feeling of ‘Sarvadharma Sambham’ which means having same and equal feeling for all religions, that keep Indians united and together in all situations. Soon after gaining independence, India had faced many problems such as division of the country, division of the states on linguistic basis, scarcity of food, illiteracy and backwardness in industrial development. But India had never given up and faced all these problems with bravery and won them over. After 74 years of independence, now India is the world’s largest democracy. e are proud of our history, and we raise it in glory, but at the same time, we forget all the wrong things in our history. We don’t talk too much about our historical mistakes because they are sad, and so we bury them in the historical depths. With this attitude, however, we risk future generations repeating the same mistakes. One of them is slavery. It dates back to 3500 BC and it has developed in different ways considering factors such as human development, economic recovery and last but not least the whims of the upper class of society. Although it may seem that slavery is a problem of the past, we have a high rate of slavery in the 21st century too. In the age of human rights, while the World democratic powers boast their democracies, we have an approximate 40 million people in slavery worldwide in 2017. So how is this huge number of people, about as large as the entire population of Ukraine, Iraq or Canada, so hard to see? And if we truly have a society in which we claim to support human rights, what is it that still keeps slavery alive? In 2017, the European Coalition for Corporate Justice made a research on the indicators of modern slavery, the supply chains buying one of the key indicators of slavery. The study found that companies that did not indicate the source of supply had a high risk of being part of supporting slavery by buying raw materials from sources that use slaves in industry. In this situation, there were companies like L’Oreal, Revlon, Boots and Estee Lauder that have no mentions about their mica supply (a mineral used to create

shine in makeup, collected from the Northeast India, where about 20,000 children are put to work). Then there are Ferrero, Hershey, Lindt and Sprungli which did not talk about their source of cocoa, except some of them which indicated only the area of the cocoa provisions - the West Africa, known for the child forced labour in the cocoa production. In the same line, there is Cartier, Pandora, Tiffany, Signet and Goldsmiths which did not provide any information about their source of gold, a field where the International Labour Organisation estimated around 1 million children being victims of the mine slavery. Then, Vogue made a study in 2018 on the fashion industry sustaining that it is one of the five key industries involved in modern slavery. Australia is one of the suspected countries possibly involved in modern slavery through the fashion industry. Many factories in the fashion industry situated in Bangladesh, China and Vietnam have a high risk of encouraging slavery for the sake of cheap clothes production and a higher income. At this point, we understand that slavery is a well-known problem, but it is not solved due to financial gains. States are the main actors in the destruction of slavery, but they do not do anything to aid this matter. A few years ago there were two cases of US diplomats having people in their residencies working in conditions of slavery. Besides the slavery we know, today we are faced with a new kind of slavery - modern slavery. It is defined as the exploitation of people by forcing them to do something.

ves. By looking at history we identify who these people were. According to Sarah Hughes and Trevor Burnard, they were merchants, farm owners, residents of villages, shipyards, artisans and even tenants. The system provided to the poor people of America the right to own or rent slaves, a solution which meant to calm down the revolts of the poor masses against the rich. In these circumstances, the escapism in the utopian world of social media, where every individual is tempted with the personal map tailored to represent the best version of themselves, suddenly appears natural. In ‘Simulacres et Simulation’, Jean Baudrillard claims that the only method to escape from the structures that imprison us is ‘silence’. In front of such an affirmation, one can only take a step back and notice the scarcity of his understanding of humankind. he Hagia Sophia was unofficially perceived as the symbol of peaceful religious coexistence. In 1934 the structure was closed for renovation and later the Turkish Cabinet decreed that it be turned into a museum. The recent court ruling invalidates this decree and allows President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to restore the museum to its status as a working mosque after decades of preserving it as a Christian art. Haghia Sophia is more than a structure, it is the symbol of dominance and power. Initially built in the 6th century under the rule of the Byzantine emperor Justinian I. It has since been the apple of the eye for rival religions and politicians. When Constantinople, modern-day Istanbul was conquered by the Ottomans, the instinct to empower the cathedral and convert it into a mosque came naturally. As a museum it had welcomed over 3 million visitors in 2019, this brings the figures of visitors in the last 12 years to 31 million. There has been much controversy from around the world, Pope Francis expressed he is “deeply pained” by this transformation. Since its declaration

the iconic built is now reopened for worship, the first Friday prayer after its conversion was lead by the Turkish president. He began the service by reciting the Qur’an. The citizens of Turkey express their yearning for this historic day as they join the first prayer outside the mosque in Sultanahmet Square where a jaw-dropping 350,000 people took part.

A cat is a lion in a jungle of small bushes A Novel, Exclusive to The Hall News Magazine by Esra Kanbur

CHAPTER TWO ‘One! I rate your hospitality, one!’ Texas shouts as she is released from the station after a week. She had Italian chefs throwing her out for stealing from their kitchens, but even they were gentle. The police push her out and tell her to stay out of trouble; as if this is possible, it is like the doctor telling you to stay away from stress. She was away for an entire week; numerous events could have taken place. A bum could have tried to slit the throats of Imogene and Kat, or even worse tried to rape them. She tries to hurry down to the skip but before she does she sees the new fast food take-out has opened up. Time to turn on the charm. She is about to go inside when a tall ginger-haired boy comes out with large home-like cardboard boxes in his hands. ‘You’re throwing those out?’ She asks him. He spins on the spot and looks down at this tiny little creature, he could have pet her if his hands weren’t full. ‘Yeah, why?’ ‘I’m goanna to need em.’ She says checking out the interior of the shop; larger than life lamb and chicken doners hang from a long shish. Pictures of appetising chips and meat are displayed on the walls. ‘Is this a kebab shop?’ She sniffs the air. Her question needs a response, as it falls short of a rhetorical one. ‘That’s right,’ he says waiting for her to go inside. ‘We’re about to open but you have to wait a few more minutes.’ In his mind, he runs through his list of morning chores as quickly as possible to announce something appraisable. ‘I need to throw these out and then a bunch of other things I need to do before-’ ‘Yeah, yeah. So hand ‘em over.’ She reaches out for the boxes. They can be their bed for tonight, looks new and everything. Not like all those other soggy ones left out on the streets with tomato stains all over them. Tomato- or blood, same thing. ‘Please?’ The boy says slowly. She isn’t a parrot and she most certainly will not act like one. She reaches for them again but he lifts them high, too high for her to attain. She steadies herself and then springs up only to touch the tips of them with her long, dirty fingernails.

‘Please!’ The boy repeats. ‘Just hand ‘em over, orange head, I have somewhere to be!’ She crosses her arms with a mixture of exhaustion and annoyance. If he is trying to flirt she is most definitely not game. ‘No! Not after you just called me orange head, that’s rude, you know.’ He teases her by placing the boxes on the floor and he is about to crush them under his feet. ‘Wait, fine... I’ll pay you for ‘em. How much you want?’ She holds out her hands. The boy stops and blinks. ‘You will pay for them?’ He chuckles and crosses his arms too. ‘Fine, fiver each.’ ‘Okay, wait for a second; just need to go to the nearest ATM. Be right back.’ She runs off around the corner and spots the ATM; a young Asian female who looks not much older than she is. She is wearing shades, a pretty pink dress with a big white handbag resting carelessly on her arm. She talks on her phone tapping on the cover of it with her manicured nails. • Rule Number One: People talking on the phone are an easy target for quick cash. No refunds. Texas speed walks past her and strokes her handbag a little and takes out her purse swiftly. Before the young female can notice anything Texas walks past again and places the purse where it belongs. ‘I’m back,’ she shouts as she meets the orange-haired boy who hasn’t moved an inch; his feet are steady over the boxes and he balances on one foot. ‘Here’s twenty,’ she throws it at him; it hits his chest and falls onto his knee. ‘Keep the change.’ She takes the boxes from beneath his feet. ‘I am ripping you off, in case you haven’t noticed.’ He unfolds his arms picking up the money. ‘Well, fix me a mix doner and I’m all good to go.’ She says with all her wits. He tells her to wait outside as he quickly goes behind the bar and slices a large portion of mix doner; he adds some salad to the side and throws in a plastic fork. He keeps looking around in case his boss comes in and pulls his ear again. Texas takes the doner and her boxes; the smell of the greasy meat makes her fall in love. Just one last selfish act. Maybe she could start eating now and give the leftovers to the girls, tell them she found it in one

of the garbage bags. How silly people were to throw out food. The radio inside her head switches back on to Bonnie and Clyde station. They don’t deserve you, you do all the work. Bonnie reminds Texas. Eat all of it, they don’t do anythin’, they’re always in your way. Clyde agrees. Get rid of them. This is your chance to never see them again. What if they’re dead? Oh, they could have died and you didn’t share your food with them. You’re evil! So evil, you don’t deserve to eat; you left them for a week. They died, because of you! Idiot. ‘Shut up.’ she warns her uninvited audience. She reaches the location of the skip but she is stunned to see nothing. The construction site is empty; the bin and the skip have been taken away. Suddenly her urge to eat flees, and she is left with acid climbing up her throat, making its way to fill her mouth. She drops everything and circles the site calling out for her two friends. Nothing. ‘Where are you?’ She whispers. Eventually, Texas takes the boxes and positions them in a way so that they hold up like a private penthouse. She sniffs the kebab box some more and falls into temptation. She opens it up and throws the fork away eating each slice of it like spaghetti. The grease fills her cheeks making her feel warm inside. She is no way near full by the time she gets to the salad, even after she finishes that, she wants more. She lies down on her back with her hands behind her head watching the clouds. She feels a little bloated but she won’t turn down another portion, this time with chips. She wishes it would rain so she could drink some water, her lips are dry and they can crack at any moment. Her stomach is out and she drums on her bony belly and makes shapes out of the clouds travelling by. She turns to her side and watches a head bobbing up and down across the site; multicoloured hair blowing about wildly in the wind, green, yellow, pink, blue, purple and black. ‘Imogene!’ Texas calls, she stretches and then gets up to greet her. ‘Where were ya, what happened to the skip, and where’s Kat?’ ‘They took the skip away two nights after you were gone, so we had to find a new place to stay. We picked the abandoned railway in Peckham. How are you?’ Imogene places a hand on Texas’s shoulder and looks over it to see the boxes. ‘Nice.’ She comments. ‘Just got out. These cost me a fortune.’ She says packing up the boxes, she folds them up into scrappy squares and they begin to walk out the site. ‘This is sad, I was gettin’ used to this place, why’d they move the skip? And by the way, Peckham is a shithole.’ They moved it because of you.

They know what you did; the dogs are lookin’ for you. Most wanted, Texas run. We don’t want to go back there, we’re scared. It’s so lonely. Nobody understands, not even her. Get rid of her, where’s she takin’ you? Stop her; she’s takin’ you to ‘em. She’s the spy. The cameras, she put ‘em there. They’re all watchin’ you from the station. ‘I don’t know something about turning this place into a shopping city.’ ‘Oh no, not one of those again.’ Texas shakes her head, trying to dodge the voices. ‘Speakin’ of malls, we should head down to one soon and get ready for winter. It’s comin’ soon, I can feel It.’ she stops walking. ‘Peckham’s too far, it’ll take us ages. We need a ride.’ Texas hands the boxes to Imogene. She walks around a little and spots a man tying up his bike outside a retail shop. Once he’s inside Texas breaks the chain with her skilled hands and steals the bike. Imogene hops on the back; standing up as Texas speeds down the street, they are like the ship’s sail against the wind as they skid. Imogene feels the harsh wind on her porcelain face as her cheeks begin to inflame from the cold. She pushes out her arms and feels free; Texas had that magicto make one feel like the possibilities are endless. You can do whatever you want; all you need to do is take action. The man is informed about the event by the shop assistant, he runs after them, kicking the lamp post with angry, taking vengeance. Why do bad things always happen to him? They get to the railway; it is an end of a tunnel railway, with the tracks leading inside a tunnel. There is a hill of trees closing in the space and grass surrounding the tracks like a meadow. A forest, almost- once upon a time touched by man but then by God. Kat’s head rests on the tracks and her long wavy, golden hair falls neatly on the grass and a bumblebee buzzes around her head, picking at her freckles. Texas feels guilty for not sharing the ke-

bab, but there will be other ones. She has at least two more tries before the boss sniffs something out. Texas stands over Kat, blocking her sun. Kat moves away; scared of darkness. She signs with her hands: How did it go, jailbird? ‘Fly as ever, ya know the usual.’ Texas replies. ‘Look boxes, we can have one each.’ She passes them around. Kat notices her new tattoo: What’s that? ‘Yeah, didn’t ‘ave time to show ya before. Look, a map of The City, now we don’t need name tags.’ Kat signs that she wants one just like that. ‘You’re only fifteen; wait till after your birthday. Besides, that’s my excuse until I collect two more tattoo coupons. You know what real gangs do? They all get a tattoo to make the shit official. Hey, ya sure this place isn’t someone else’s territory?’ Texas swings around, towering up her guard. ‘Don’t worry, it’s just Crazy Troll and Kid Noel who lives somewhere in there,’ Imogene points her towards the tunnel. ‘We asked and they said it was fine, he said something about you saving his son’s life?’ she speaks with sufficient energy in her voice, but a rope pulls back at her throat and makes her swallow her words. Low self-esteem has always been her enemy. ‘Yeah, yeah... that happened once before I even met ya. Kid Noel was tryin’ to rob these hipsters but when they tried to rush him I came into play and scared ‘em off with my nails.’ The two listen in amusement. Story-time with Texas was short and sweet, if you weren’t paying attention it could be over in a flash. ‘But if anyone asks just say I saved him from drownin’ from the Titanic.’ ‘You’re not old enough for that,’ Imogene laughs, covering her mouth conscience of her bad breath. ‘I say we stick to the original story.’ ‘Yeah, yeah. Whatever floats your boat.’ She flips her box over and crawls inside it and without more anything else, falls asleep. Sleep isn’t easy at times, she is always uneasy when she comes out from behind bars. In there you have to constantly watch your back, even when you are sleeping you must keep an open eye. All the women there are jealous because you will be out in a week. They keep asking you if you are sure and not mistaken. Half of them just laugh and don’t believe you. They are so manipulative; they make you believe you will be imprisoned forever. The only nice thing about being there is the bed and free food; though Texas had to scrub the toilets to have a cheese and salad roll but without the cheese or salad as they had run out of ingredients. Or that’s what they said. In the middle of the night Texas’s ears twitch and the three little lions lock eyes in an instant. Open spaces are never a good idea to sleep in. They quickly run and jump behind the bushes in unison and keep watch to find the owner of the sounds. A car slows down and parks near the tracks, the driver turns the headlights off.

I told you. They are here. Told you, you wouldn’t listen and now you’re gonna die. Die, you deserve to die. How was your last ever meal? Tex- ass. Two men in burgundy suits get out of the car and casually open the boot. They take out a curled up body of a man, no more than five feet tall. The men hardly struggle with a plum-shaped man- Just another day at the office. They swing and dump him face down right next to the girls in the bushes. Thump. Imogene lets out a small yelp but covers her mouth just in time before the men hear. They speedily drive away and Imogene quickly jumps out, Texas breaks a small branch from the tree and pokes the body with the stick. ‘Don’t!’ Imogene begs her not to. Poke, poke, poke. ‘Tex, leave it alone, let’s just go and sleep in the tunnel with Troll and Noel.’ Poke. Texas kneels beside him and turns him over with her palms. The man has his eyes closed. He has a defined scar across his face going diagonal from the start of his hairline to the end of his chin; it’s not very deep nor is it new. She unzips his jacket and slips her hand inside his pockets. ‘Come on, you can’t be serious? You’re robbing dead people too?’ Kat watches closely as Texas finds his wallet, she checks through to find it empty except for a small piece of folded paper in one of the slots. It would have been easy to miss too if Texas wasn’t so keen on finding something. She unfolds it to find a number with a kiss on it; dark pink lipstick. She takes everything and agrees they should sleep in the tunnel. ‘The wallet’s leather; we can sell it for a good price at the market.’ She tells them. They tiptoe inside the stone tunnel; it is colder inside than it is out. The tunnel is filled with odd junk like a toy pram, a broken clothes rack and a small lamp without a bulb. Like a spark in the darkness, Crazy Troll abruptly swings a wooden baseball bat at them and misses their head by an inch. ‘Whoa, it’s just us!’ Texas raises her hands high in defence and tries to calms him down. Once he remembers he goes back to sleep leaving the girls to crawl next to Noel to share his flea blanket. Imogene and Kat wake up to find the tunnel empty in the morning, they get out and know Texas too well to be searching for her at ground level. They search the trees and find her hanging from one. Looking down at them, she starts to throw berries at their heads. She is meters up high in the tree however she swings her legs teasing gravity. ‘Mornin’ kittens, look! I have a magic trick for ya. Hocus-pocus!’ She says gathering an imaginary ball of fire and throwing it down into the bushes. The girls’ eyes follow to see that the body has disappeared, leaving its place to an army of aggressive ants. ‘It’s a disappearin’ act!’ She climbs down in a second

and jumps at the spot the body once laid, crashing the ants. ‘He was gone when I got here and that was pretty early. Guess he wasn’t dead after all. He just got up and left.’ She kicks the mud. ‘Now time to find out who missy-kissy is!’ She rubs her hands together. First they will have to borrow a phone from someone, it is Kat’s turn. They walk in the busiest street they can find at that hour. People are sitting at cafes and drinking their morning coffee. The cats settle down at one of tables outside and before a member of stuff comes over and tells them to kindly leave, Kat will have to make her move. She checks over her shoulder and spots a woman’s handbag resting at the arm of her chair. She is deep in conversation with the man sitting opposite her who passionately stares back into her eyes. • Rule Number Two: Lovers are easy to rob as they are ever so oblivious to their surroundings. Kat stuffs her hand into the handbag and takes out a pen; she throws it back in shaking her head. Ting. The woman turns around and looks at them. Texas and Imogene begin to search the clouds and pretend to mind their own business, Texas comments on the weather. The woman pulls her bag under the table, between her legs. Kat shakes her head again in disappointment. They get up and go to another cafe. They sit at one of the outdoor tables again and this time they are in luck. A man eating cake on his own has his phone almost sliding out of his jean pocket; Kat catches it just in time before it hits the ground. The man is so into his cake that he doesn’t notice. Texas takes the phone and begins to dial. ‘He’s going to notice any second, Tex!’ Imogene whispers to her. Texas ignores and waits for someone to pick up. ‘Hello, this is Sienna how I may escort you?’ says a high-pitched woman’s voice through the phone. Texas covers the speaker and laughs out loud. ‘He got himself a whore!’ She tells them, ‘Oh sorry, escort.’ She corrects herself and presses the phone to her ear again. ‘Yeah hi, I will like to arrange a meetin’ with you and… Mr Smith?’ She uses the most common surname. The chances are high. The woman on the phone hesitates. ‘I don’t know a Mr Smith, I only give my personal number to clients I

know well.’ She replies. Classy. ‘I believe he saw you last night, he has a scar on his face. Doesn’t like to talk about it, perhaps he joins you to suppress his sorrows?’ Texas covers the phone again and giggles. Kat laughs with her as she leans across the table and listens. Imogene keeps watch and kicks Texas from under the table to signal that the man is patting his jeans. ‘Yes... he must have used a fake name. You’re not his wife are you?’ The woman asks. ‘No I’m his assistant, will you please give me an address?’ Texas hurries. The woman hangs up. Texas slides the phone across the table and Kat turns around to tap the man on the shoulder. ‘You dropped it,’ Imogene calls out nervously. ‘Oh, did I? Thank you, little girl.’ He says to Kat and gives her a pound as a gesture of appreciation. The girls sit there for a little longer. ‘Who is this man?’ Texas asks herself. The man last night was a warnin’. They’re goin’ to do the same to you. You must find him; he’ll tell you all about it. You can sacrifice Imogene, she’s the spy. You must separate from Kat, she’s innocent. Call her again, call her again! ‘Why are you so concerned about him?’ Imogene watches as a waiter approaches them. He waits by the table with his hands behind his back. Kat waves the pound coin in his face. ‘We’ll have a...’ Imogene checks the menu to see what they can get for a pound. ‘A glass of water.’ She fills her cheeks up with air and embarrassment. The man leaves to bring them a glass. ‘Embarrassing.’ She adds. ‘I have to call her again before she calls him and lets him know.’ Texas looks around for another phone they can borrow. She gets up quickly and goes inside the cafe and taps her fingers at the bar. ‘Excuse me?’ She puts on a hideously fake Californian accent. ‘Hey, my friends and I are like a kind of lost, right. Like, we’re totally on holiday. I have to call my parents right, but our networks don’t seem to be working right, can I use your phone? Like please?’ She smiles. The man pulls out the cafe phone on to the bar. ‘Like Thanks.’ She says and begins to dial again. The woman picks up and answers in the same way. Once the barman assists another customer Texas begins to speak. ‘Hi, I called a second ago, I think you misunderstood. Mr Smith wants me to send a car to pick you up for dinner.’ She begins to tap her fingers again impatiently. The woman finally gives an address to a nightclub called The Mints. Kat drinks half her water and uses the other half as a mouthwash. She takes the glass with her so she can use it to collect rainwater.

THE SINGING VOICE THROUGHOUT THE TIMES Part 1

W

e have all heard about operatic music at some point in our lives – if not from a deeper-rooted interest, intense research or even academic necessity, at least from the many interpretations of arias such as “O Mio babbino Caro” from Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi” or “Nessun Dorma” from the opera “Turandot” by the same composer in hugely mediatized talent shows, or from Tom’s bombastic rendition of Figaro’s “Largo al factotum” from Rossini’s “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” (with juicy interventions from his tiny arch-enemy Jerry). There is also an impressive number of Habaneras in TV advertising spots, and Delibes’ opera in three acts “Lakmé” is probably best known for its Barcarolle duet, featured in the Academy Awards winner “La vita è Bella” in two key moments of the plot, as well as covered, with adapted lyrics, by Elvis Presley in the movie “Tonight Is So Right For Love”, just to name a few of the contexts it was inserted in.

evolve? Is there just one kind of it or has it transformed? In this article and the following ones, I will try to briefly mark the operatic styles and their defining traits in music history, from the birth of opera and up to our days.

Bardi”, it is a melodrama of which the score has been lost. Instead, “Euridice”, written by the same composer two years later, is the first score which has survived until modern times. The goal of these compositions was to revive the classical Greek drama; this necessity led to the most obvious characteristic of the singing voice in such a context, commonly defined as “recitar Cantando” – to recite by singing. As the name says, the role of the voice was a declamatory one; the main purpose was to give immediate verbal meaning and naturalness to the musical phrases. The vocal lines would emphasize the natural accent of the syllables within the words, whereas the singer would have

to handle intonation, intensity and colour in such a way as to give fluidity and spontaneousness to their phrases. This manner of singing will remain as a trademark of the Italian singing tradition as the insertion of the “recitativo” (a minimally accompanied vocal part which has either narrative function or represents a dialogue between the characters) and will spread throughout Europe in all the operatic repertoire. Baroque opera has subsequently been explored and developed by composers such as Monteverdi, Scarlatti, Vivaldi or Händel. Aside from the recitativi, baroque opera consisted of arias with “da capo”, the main theme followed by a second, completely different one, and a repetition of the opening theme with variations, which allowed singers to showcase their talent both on a musical and a technical level, by adding their elaborate embellishments, singing long and fast phrases with remarkable breath support and vocal agility, and tirelessly exploring emotion and expression to give more diversity to an otherwise repetitive text. Many of the famous singers of those times were castrati, men who had undergone castration before puberty and had therefore avoided the thickening of the vocal folds and lowering of the larynx, hence having a high pitched voice, similar to that of women. The next publication will take us through Gluck’s operatic reform which has given way to the classical period in music history, with its titanic composers, ageless titles and possibly the purest vocal conception of all times.

SNATC H E D PUTTIN G TH E ‘FUN’ IN NON-R EFUNDA BL E Another typical comedy about clueless Americans going aboard and getting into comical trouble. The adventure is a bonding experience for the detached mother and daughter who have trouble understanding each other. The film starts with the main

character Emily, played by Amy Schumer, getting fired from her job. The laugh out loud moments starts right off the bat. Emily’s defensive and ignorant nature sets an immediate uplifting feeling. Her response to the life-changing event in her life is, “I wouldn’t have worked there even if they paid me.”The audience gets a quick glimpse into the mishaps of Emily’s world and the reason for her vulnerability is her naivety. A second mishap occurs when her boyfriend breaks up with her and she asks when. Her avoidance is afore-shadowing to the trouble she will get up to later on in him. She is left jobless, heart-break and with a non-refundable ticket to Ecuador. After getting many rejections from her friends on her offer of a free ticket and holiday she finds herself at her mother’s mercy. Linda, played by Goldie Hawn, is a cat lady who lives with her adult son who never leaves the house. This is a very familiar situation for many families where the middle-aged parents have to cook and clean for their adult children. After Emily stumbles upon Linda’s old photo album and sees images of her youthful, free-spirited mother she offers her the second ticket. The film unravels at the holiday destination where Emily meets NEWS MAGAZINE 26

a tall, dark stranger and become instant buddies. Her urge to attract the stranger drags Linda along with her on a road trip. Soon enough they find themselves in a locked room and start to realise the plot that is playing out. Although the film is filled with cliche and traditional slapstick, some new comedy stunts are enough to get you giggling at every other screen. As typical bonding adventures go, the mother and daughter use the eccentric opportunities of being kidnapped to express how they feel about to each other, and as the film progresses so does their relationship. They begin to understand and see a different side to each other. Emily’s compassion and her helpfulness towards others stun Linda, and Linda’s courage shows Emily what love truly is. Snatched is a fun film aimed at young girls and mums who are looking to have a laugh together and use this as their bonding experience. It will be a good choice of film to watch while commuting on an aeroplane or a long car ride. There are a few graphic scenes just a nip slips and tapeworms, however, wanting to look away and cringing is what makes this film so much fun. It can also be the perfect chick flick for a girls night in. It is refreshing to see a film that is not about Hollywood love where

the boy gets the girl in the end. Sometimes viewers want to watch woman empowerment, trying something new and finding yourself. The Hall News Magazine gives Snatched 3 out of 5 stars because of great acting and the genuinely funny scenes. The audience is fully aware that each scene is completely unrealistic, which makes it hard to relate to the characters entirely. Nonetheless, it is a delight to see Goldie Hawn in action since her film in 2002. The purpose of the film is clear; it’s a feel-good, relaxing 90 minutes you will gladly give up.

sends signals to the brain that it will be a positive change, and you shall not regret it. “Sweat is fat crying” This takes a comically turn on fitness quotes. It is light-hearted and a new form of thinking. Everyone understands that once you start working out you will have to put in a lot of effort to sweat and this is the only way to know you are losing weight or in the first instance water weight. When a quote so graphically draws you the image of the fat in your body crying, the only way to achieve it in action. You do not want the fat, you want it to cry and leave your body in the form of sweat. Simple.

“Slow progress is better than no progress” – There are two sides to this quote. Some people who will agree with this and think; yes if you are not running towards a goal at least you are walking towards it. It is better than just sitting there and letting life hit you. Doing a tiny little thing to change your habit is a step in the right direction and that is all that counts. In other words, a drip will one day create a pond. However, on the flip side, a lot of people will argue to do it the right way or not do it at all. For example, if two people on YouTube begin to document their weight loss journey by making videos and one is going for it and the other one is making very slow and invisible progress, it will be easy to see what works. Sometimes you do need to go all out and try your best instead

of putting in 50%. With slow progress chances of quitting is higher as you will not be seeing the results. On the other hand, good habits are for life. Along with fitness quotes, motivational images of fit bodies are equally as effective. However, like anything else one must keep reciting these quotes

A good way to always keep motivated is to make the image of the quote a screensaver on your phone as this is one device you will be looking at all the time. Other good ways include making posters and hanging them up or writing it out by hand every morning to give you that feeling of physical reciting. When used appropriately fitness quotes can give you that extra push to allow you to walk or run in the right direction. When misused- for example, if you find de-motivating quotes without knowing it such as Kate Moss’s infamous quote “nothing feels as good as being skinny” it will push you into an unhealthy route while the goal is to be healthy.

I’m not saying you should hop on the essential-oil-enthusiasts train, but if you truly want to know how and if they work, this book is a phenomenal resource. It would seem that there is a complex biochemical and cellular heritage that we share with plants, whose essences can support the preservation of our genetic code and strengthen our bodies’ immune response. The author’s statements are supported by thorough research and new developments in science. Make yourself a Yogi Pure Freshness tea and watch it let off steam – those could soon be turning into essential oil vapours coming out of a diffuser. Beware: you might actually become an essential oil junkie after reading this.

When The Body Says No: The Cost of Hidden Stress by Gabor Maté, M.D.

A voice of compassion, a pillar of healing, grace and a man of great erudition, dr. Gabor Maté, renowned for his work on addiction and trauma, challenges us to take an honest look at ourselves and at the way, we navigate through life’s stresses and the different emotions that arise with them. Healing and learning come with a warning: “When we have been prevented from learning how to say no, our bodies may end up saying it for us.” This transformative insight builds on the topic of stress and anxiety and the way a lack of emotional self-awareness will eventually weaken our immune apparatus and hormones, debilitate the body systems and prepare the ground for of a host of illnesses. An eye-opening book that teaches us about the physiological mind-body connection by reinforcing the idea of the body as a holistic organism. Soothe yourself with a cup of Dammann Frères white tea.

MEET THE TE AM INA T S I R C u l g o i eks

I

am now 30 years old, and I can say my life has been full of surprises. I studied Economics at school after I came to Bucharest. For university, I chose Business Administration in Foreign Language- French. This allowed me to combine the two subjects I love. I did my master in Islamic Space. This was a surprise even for me. I was always attracted to Islamic spaces and Arabic, but I did not dare to study this subject. So, after 3 years of self-discovery, I felt confident to study this new subject, during which my class-mates helped fuel my love of knowledge for the Islamic world. I wish to obtain a doctorate in this field and advance in inter-religious dialogue and its influence on societies. Currently, I am working as an Academic editor in International Journals and a contributing writer for The Hall News.

month, the editor offers general topics for the writers to choose, guidance and flexibility are granted. You write a lot about spirituality in your articles, what inspires this?

I indeed write a lot about spirituality. Even though until 8 years ago I was an Orthodox Christian, I often went to church and had all kinds of curiosities about faith, religion, and the spirituality. Life has once again shown me that things can take all kinds of twists and turns. I became a Muslim after searching and observing for 2 years. I had muslim colleagues around me who fuelled my curiosity and I began to observe. The choice did not come easily. At one point it was a constant struggle between my mind and soul, which I tried to reCan you talk a bit about how to write for The concile with. At the age of 20, I read the Bible. in the book,” as they say. For this reason, many of my articles are related to the spiritual world. My soul vibrates on this frequency and I want to develop, perfect, and share the knowledge of Islam, combining science with practice. When did you convert to Islam and how has your life changed since? I converted to Islam at age of 22, the last year of faculty. It was in the summer when I was struggling with my bachelor’s thesis, and I was also working… the last year of faculty was a very difficult, not only academically but spiritually. I believe that when you try to get closer to the Divinity ( God, Allah, Yahweh, etc.) there will be trials. Fortunately for me, my parents divorced when I was an infant and I grew up only with my mother. My father choosing to have a relationship based only on alimony - did not comment on the changes he saw in me. Although I went home once a month, the changes were visible - I dressed differently and no longer ate pork. However, no family member approached me about it. Moreover, I remember that the major change was in the summer of 2012 when I went home for the summer again. That year was the first time I fasted at Ramadan. Thus, for a month I tried to stay away from home to not shock or disturb my family with a day-long fast. But at the end of Ramadan wanted to explain the reason for the change. I went home in the morning so that if my family gets mad at me, I could leave. But when you choose to do something for His thanks, He helps you. I then entered the gate wearing my headscarf and NEWS MAGAZINE

I remember at one point, after reading the Bible and the Qur’an, I went to church to ask for a priest’s command. I expected him to say, “My daughter, God is your God, not Allah. You’re lost, come back.” But he said to me, “Inside you is the devil. They (Muslims) do not believe in Jesus and the Virgin Mary.” I began to argue with the priest. It was a sign for me that many representatives of religions know only their piece. I consider that a man, even if he declares himself an atheist, must not forget that he is a creature just like everyone else. Moreover, a man like any other man. Let’s not take out the most important part of it: being human. At the end of spring I went to church again and knelt, asking God to decide once and for all what he wanted for me and that I could no longer stand the test. And I remember when I looked up, I saw a picture of Miss Maria. In the pictures, the Virgin is represented with a veil on her hair. Just then I thought, “Oh, you’re wearing a scarf, too.” I had only associated the scarf with Islam... Since then things have started to become clearer for me. I started wearing the scarf 6 years ago. For a year I wore hats and slits but not a scarf, until one summer. I was having nightmares, I thought I wanted to put on my scarf because my husband would have liked it. I think if you do something for God, don’t tie him to people. It may sound harsh, but we are just pieces of flesh and bone that will end, whose soul will reach Him. I discussed this with my husband back then. He said to me in all sincerity: “If you ask me, yes, I would like to see you with a scarf. It’s what I’ve always seen, it’s what I know a Muslim should wear, but I can’t impose that on you. I’m not entitled to that. That if you do, do it for Him. Allah (God) says that if you want to do something, live Islam and try to be an example, but do not impose. ” The next day I put on my hat and arranged myself in the mirror, then I said I had to take off my hat and go out with my hair arranged. I can’t do something spiritual for a man - my husband. But when I opened the door, I couldn’t get out of the house ... then I thought to myself I want to wear a ladder. And I arranged my scarf. 35

All the way I was looking left and right to see people’s faces and reactions. I felt the need to see how others perceived me ... I felt the need for confirmation. But when He considers that the test is over, he gives some surprises. When I had arrived at the National Library door, a young man wanted to go out. I thought he was going to be rude, but he opened the door wide and said, “Here you go!” That invitation was my answer. It was what gave me confidence. Now I propose things and I fight to get them.

Have you experienced any culture clash, or difficulty adapting to the islamic community? What shocked me about the community I belong to, has a lot to do with culture - especially, the Turkish culture, some cultural roots shock me, some customs have nothing to do with Islam. I consider that the biggest struggle of an interracial couple is the cultural factor. I think two people need to love each other so much that they are blind and deaf to the coming cultural waves and storms. What Three Habits Will Improve Your Life? Faith, prayer, patience. What Product Do You Think The World Could Go On Without? Plastic. But other objects that came to mind - such as money, cars, etc. - they are necessary, but we must learn not to put them above life and humanity. To What Extent Do You Shape Your Own Destiny, And How Much Is Down To Fate? I can’t say I’m shaping my destiny. I try to set goals that do not exceed the limits of a human. For me being human and not stepping on others to be great was always above all. I want to be able to put my head on my pillow knowing I didn’t hurt anyone. I have so many things to improve on that I don’t need the sins or hardships of others. What are some challenges you think the next generation will face?

I think that today everything related to the spirituality is misunderstood. Many emblematic figures and names from all religions use the parts that suit them from the religion. What are your future aspirations and what actions will you take to achieve them? I want to leave something behind both academically and in my personal life. I believe that in everything I do I try to contribute to this. I study, work and take care of my daughter - I try to teach her that everything comes from Him and goes to Him. Friendship Between Youth The New Linen CRISTINA EKSIOGLU

Today, the friendship between young people seems like the latest trend; the friendship between young people of different nationalities, cultures, religions, ideas, should exist more. Why? First of all, today, thanks to technology, the internet, work, school, the youth have the opportunity to come into contact with a variety of individuals, regardless of the cultural background from which they come. It is for this reason that current and future societies need to adapt to these changes. And the best, healthiest and safest form of adaptation is this: the friendship between today’s young people that will shape tomorrow’s adult societies. I can say that the robotisation that is accentuated today makes the need for interpersonal connections even more necessary. An important reason in promoting and creating a framework conducive to the maintenance and especially between young people of different cultures and religions is that today, due to online falsehood, many adults and young people fall into depression. Also, because of the falsehood that is promoted both online and offline, there is a lot of cyberbullying, depression, an unsafe fascination with alcohol, drugs, prostitution or maybe even suicide. Researching for this article, I came across a study by The Children’s Society written in 2009. In the late 19th century, Edward Rudolf, a young Sunday school teacher and civil servant in South London, saw first-hand the brutal effects of poverty on the lives of children. 2019 Good Childhood Report found that young people are becoming more and more unhappy with their friendships. This could be a result of peer pressure, being unable to spend time with friends outside of school, excessive social media use or loneliness. This information made me think about the fact that both adults and especially young people or children must learn to make close friends, regardless of culture, tradition, or religion. I believe that the characteristic that must prevail today, especially tomorrow among the members of the global society that is being formed, is empathy. I think today we are talking more about EQ than IQ. IQ is evolving due to the rapid evolution of technology, but what will ensure a safe society for people will be EQ. And for that, we need to understand, develop and apply this feature as much as possible. Emotional intelligence (EI), emotional leadership (EL), emotional quotient (EQ) and emotional intelligence quotient (EIQ), is the capability of individuals to recognise

their own emotions and those of others, discern between different feelings and label them appropriately, use emotional information to guide thinking and behaviour, and manage or adjust emotions to adapt to environments or achieve one’s goal. Studies have shown that people with high EI have greater mental health, job performance, and leadership skills although no causal relationships have been shown and such findings are likely to be attributable to general intelligence and specific personality traits rather than emotional intelligence as a construct. If, however, you do not see any connection between emotional intelligence and society, we can briefly analyse the beginning of 2020. Less than a month after the New Year, all of humanity has found itself in a global crisis: a deadly virus has managed to paralyse the entire world. Moreover, hundreds of cities, dozens of countries have decided to lockdown. Thus, in addition to the health crisis, the economic crisis arose due to many people becoming unemployed or with their business over, but with loans or debts, mental health problems have been on a rise. But if we all make an effort and overcome the differences we see as barriers and develop our emotional intelligence, in addition to faith - as there is something stronger than us humans - surely we will be able to overcome these trials of humanity more easily. We could recover without too many victims both economically and in terms of mental health. This is why I believe that we should no longer speak of “friendship” and “youth” as two separate words, the meaning of “youth friendship” must be created and applied. Moreover, all these means of online communication, such as platforms: TikTok, Youtube, Instagram, Facebook, etc. become valuable tools in creating and promoting friendship between young people.I can even say that I am launching a challenge that will surely bear fruit for all influencers around the world. No matter what it promotes as products, no matter what culture, nationality or religion, to unite under the umbrella of “friendship between young people the new linen” and create the secure society of tomorrow, which we all need.

THE SINKING SHIP KEVIN PEACE

W

e all must have heard of the phrase ‘The ship that never sinks is friendship’ Did you know there’s a day for that. World Friendship Day takes place on 30th July. The idea for a day of friendship came from Hallmark cards in the 1930s. Originally celebrated on 2nd August, the day was viewed by the public as a money-making exercise, sales of friendship day cards didn`t take off in Europe and the USA. The idea of a day to honour friendship when friendship was adopted by several countries in Asia where it remained a popular custom to reserve a day for celebrating the ship that never sinks and the exchange of gifts between friends. The first World Friendship Day was proposed for 30 July 1958 by the World Friendship Crusade. Many years later, in 2011, the 30th July was declared as the International Day of Friendship by the General Assembly of United Nations. With the growing popularity of social media throughout the world. There has been an increase in celebrating World Friendship Day online and with community activities in local communities, however all while the popularity of this holiday was on the decline in the United States. It began to gain popularity in Europe and Asia. Whether they are close or far, old or new, best friends help to carry us through our lives. Friendship is important no matter how hard it is to make friends, it is a necessity like bread and water. Despite the difference between thought and emotion, it is very important to be able to continue solidly without breaking this bond. Friendship, at times, comes with more value than family members. The stronger this bond you share your pain, sorrow, happiness, where the meaning of life gains immense value. Making friendship is a laborious act: how hard it is to be able to sustain it and even to strengthen it? We are very convinced that fake friendship is destroyed by the smallest lay like sandcastles. Because of that to reinforce it requires awareness and devotion. In the context. Isn`t it obvious that friendship day will not be limited to one day? Unfortunately, the friendship day to be celebrated in various countries of the world will not even be mentioned in some countries. Is there a need a day for this value to be understood. I believe that these activities will create awareness. With that, I hand over the world friendship cloak to you in celebration of all the ride or dies. NEWS MAGAZINE

The Pillars Of Marriage

U

uniting the lives of two people and declaring their love to the world is the eldest institution. It can be divided into 3 main processes; The period before marriage, time of marriage, phases after marriage. Before anything, one must ask themselves if they are ready for marriage? Mentally, legally (being of age) and giving confidence in the face of resourcefulness. Each individual learns about who they are until a point comes and they can declare to know exactly who they are. Soon, he places his head on the same pillow with his lover. Finances and spirituality will be of the essence, and at times the glue holding the walls of marriage. Materialism is considered useless in the name of happiness, as happiness is not an item that can be bought. However, money, real estate and immovable property is the decor of the rooms of marriage. Spirituality is a sentimental nuance. To have good morals and to distinguish between the right and the wrong is the light in the room, leading the way in the dark. People with spiritual values are always those who bring satisfaction with their existence. The combination of material and spiritual values in one person requires the greatest maturation. It should be able to maintain the virtues to sur-

vive through the ups and downs. Those who knock and blend their money; those who splurge on the unnecessary and have inappropriate spending have rose-coloured glasses. Materialism if abused, is a time-stamped blindfold. Enjoyment and laughter are important factors, but as factors go, it is only an element in the drink of love. One must not be fooled by moments of joy, it may lead to only glimpses of hope in the long-run. Marriage is an institution, the internal operation can be carried out with external representation. Job share is a factor that must not be underestimated. Those under the same roof should share work for a harmonious togetherness. At home, peace is very important. Spouses must have mutual respect. Those involved must continue his associations by their rules. Mutual assistance should be provided.

during mealtime. To come with home with a bunch of flowers on special days, a simple yet romantic gesture. Marriage is a compromise sometimes, from learning to adapt to hobbies, to being involved in each other’s social life, but being able to give each other space to be their person. Those who cannot respect and love, continue with selfishness and have a negative approach is paving the way to unsuccessful and the all feared D-word; divorce. In marriage those who are inconsistent, liars or frauds are the losers. Actions that indicate wanting to live alone, not respecting family traditions and falling for society pressure will cause both sides to make psychological wars. If the order is broken, the pedestal relationship becomes disposable. A marriage foundation is permanent and labour-seeking. It is imperative to work before, during and after.

Method; Ingredients; 260g unsalted pistachios (out of shells) 250g sifted plain flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 170g unsalted butter, softened to room temperature 300g caster sugar 5 large egg whites, at room temperature 120g natural/Greek yogurt, at room temperature 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract 1 teaspoon of rose water Zest of half a lemon 240ml whole milk, at room temperature *Optional,a dash of green food colouring For the buttercream. 300g unsalted butter, softened to room temperature 300g white chocolate, melted and cooled 700g sifted icing (powdered) sugar 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 2 teaspoons of rose water Pinch of salt

Preheat the oven to 170°c. Grease and line three 9 inch cake pans. Pulse the pistachios in a food processor into very fine crumbs. Set 30g aside for garnishing. In a large bowl, whisk in the ground pistachio, flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside. Using a handheld or stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment beat the butter and sugar together on high speed until smooth and creamy, about 3 minutes. Scrape down the sides and the bottom of the bowl with a rubber spatula as needed. Beat in the egg whites on low speed first, then put it up to high speed until combined, about 2 minutes. Beat in the yoghurt, vanilla extract, lemon zest and rose water. Scrape down the sides and the bottom of the bowl as needed. With the mixer on low speed, add the dry ingredients until just incorporated. With the mixer still running on low, pour in the milk (and the green food colouring, if using) and mix just until combined. You may need to whisk it all by hand to make sure there are no lumps at the bottom of the bowl. The batter will be slightly thick. (This is when I like to taste the batter)

Pour the batter evenly into cake pans. Bake for around 20-23 minutes or until the cakes are baked through. To check, insert a toothpick into the centre of the cake. If it comes out clean, it’s done. Allow cakes to cool completely in the pans for 10mins then remove out of the pans and let it completely cool on a wire rack. To make the buttercream, using the paddle attachment or handheld mixer beat the butter on high speed until pale and creamy, around 5 minutes. Add the half of the icing sugar and beat on low speed first (be careful of starting on high speed or you’ll be covered in icing sugar!) Once the sugar has combined, beat on high speed for 2 minutes. Add the other half of the icing sugar and repeat. Now pour in the melted white chocolate, vanilla extract and rose water.

“Her öğrenci Öğretmenine her gün üç soru sorar 1- Size güvenebilir miyim?

Yorum her zaman sanatseverlerimizindir.
