EDITOR’S LETTER
EDITOR’S CHOICE: It has been exactly one year since my co-founder Osman Komurcu and I set on a journey to establish The Hall News Mazagine. My passoion for copywriting and digital design had finally found a platform, and it provided us with a creative outlet. This magazine started off as a news agent, however as monthly publications go we were unable to keep up with current affairs. We were quick to adapt and grow the sections in our magazine along with expanding our team of writers. This jounery has bought us to 12 wonderful issues and a growing reader base. Now, I would like to announce that we are changing our name!

We are dropping the ‘news’ as we are no longer holding news as a priorty, rather sharing timeless articles with you. We will now continue our publishing life as The Hall Magazine. Life is a journery, you live. learn and advance. I am always merserised by the concept of time, and how we can all become different people, changing our likes and dislikes, and evolve with every lesson. Of course there are set-backs, times when things get tough and you want to quit. When you come out the other side and see the bigger picture, you can sit and write some wise words to inspire others. Been there, done that. What I am most thankful for is our writers who are as excited about the prospect of The Hall as much as us and our sense of community and passion for creativity. The final issue of 2020 will be our longest issue to date with 74 pages!

he Digital Age is the greatest catalyst in blurring the lines between producers and consumers. New media has increased studies on the levels of control either side may have. Throughout history religion and education have exercised socially acceptable behaviours, this became more so apparent after the Industrial Revolution. Social Control (Small and Vincent: 1894) is used to conform individuals to avoid undesirable actions and chaos in society. Urbanisation bought with it an even more vast sanction, known as media. Digital Media, in particular, has introduced neologism for audiences such as YouTube sensations being referred to as influencers. This provides the comfort of empowerment to society, however, there are theories by Horkheimer and Adnor (1947) and Jose Van Dijck (2009) suggesting this may only be an illusion.
carried out to make audiences believe they first need to possess false needs such as money and fame. Temporary diversion of escapism comes in forms of entertainment. Media creates unhappy individuals who are trying to escape their stressful and boring lives. Although during the Great Depression in 1929, the media helped people escape from hardships of financial difficulties, Horkheimer and Adnor argue that this distraction makes society incapable of passing judgement on matters such as politics.
Moulding consumers into products is not a recent method in making commercial success. Vincent Van Gogh (1853 - 1890) is celebrated to be a famous impressionist. He had not obtained any commercial success from his paintings, while he was alive he was described to be a failure. Now, there is a museum named after him in The Netherlands, and his works are amongst the most Culture is fluid, covers areas of art, traditions expensive in the world, his paintings are printed on magnets, keyring and many other merchanand customs of a community. e live in times when human rights seem to have always existed as something natural and normal. However, mankind has had various historical moments in which rights were a privilege rather than normality. In this context, some questions arise: Where did these rights come from? Who invented them? Who guarantees them? Who has the authority to decide whether I should have these rights? To answer these questions, I will focus on human nature and the role of men through history in ensuring human rights. I will start with human nature and with the reasons behind building the first social organizations: the tribes. Because from the very beginning humans were guided more by instincts and less by rationality,
physical power was the main factor in choosing the decision-making authority, as well as in imposing its decisions regardless of people’s individual preferences. This way, people came through slavery and countless wars of conquest. Once the most physically strong and ruthless man came to lead a group of people, his supporters encouraged his actions by transforming his decisions into social normalcy to which the weaker members of society had to submit. Of course, in this discussion, we must also mention the safety issues. The fact that most people came to listen to a single person, or NEWS MAGAZINE 12 a group of people, was largely due to their desire to be protected from invasion and theft.
People have several types of needs that must be met. Once they could build a shelter for themselves and get food, the next basic need became their security and the security of their belongings. In this direction, physical strength and battle strategies are a must. If we look at history, we will easily see that the vast majority of rulers were military, or at least had skills in this area. Battles between groups of people appeared when other needs arose, such as instinctual needs (defence and expansion of territory, to mate, access to various goods and raw materials). Physical strength and their needs divided people into strong and weak beings. For this reason, women and children were considered
the material goods of man in many areas of the Earth, because they could not defend themselves and because they represented a vulnerability. Because women are the ones who give birth to children and because they can meet the physiological needs of men to mate, in the ancient times they have been considered rather an object used only for their reproductive system, regardless of their physical constitution and their ability to contribute to the development of society in other ways. Whether women had rights or not depended on the level of social development. As an example, women in ancient Greece had the same social status as women in Iran today. However, in the same period, in the ancient Egypt women had rights almost equal to those of men, and some were even pharaohs (Cleopatra, Nefertiti). So, what is the reason for this enormous discrepancy between civilizations? I would say that one of the reasons is the lifestyle of each society. While some focused on conquest, others focused on prosperity. Those focused on conquest will always emphasize the physical strength and supremacy of the strong man, while those focused on prosperity will concentrate on social development and innovation, where women have their place for a different perspective and at the same time an insider view of both social and family life. Another reason I would say is the mental maturity that some societies have reached. The more developed ones came to appreciate social welfare, while those less developed were guided by instincts and were lost between needs and demands
which led to self-destruction. Along with these reasons, I would add another that had and still has a great role in the development of democracy that we have today and in ensuring women’s rights: the role of men in educating their daughters and in appreciating their wives. As you have noticed, the issue addressed in this discussion is more about women’s rights, because men’s rights have not suffered as much, because men were the ones to formulate and guarantee rights for themselves. Men decided who was given rights and who was not, they being the embodiment of power and decision-making process. The role of men has been important both in depriving women of their rights and in endowing them with the rights they have today, and I will explain why. In history, many men used to marry according to tradition, not out of love, which is why they came to hate the women they lived with for the simple existence that prevented them from being happy with their loved ones. An example in this direction is the well-known Dracula, which was in love with a 17-year-old Katarina Siegel, a simple country girl to which he wanted to marry, but in the name of his reign he was already married to Anastasia Holszanska, the niece of the Queen of Poland. The customs did not allow the annulment of the marriage with Anastasia, nor the happy living with a young woman who tried to avoid the eyes of the world that judged the non-conformity to the customs. On the other hand, as I mentioned, the man has an important role in training strong women to defend their rights. The way fathers participate in educating their daughters,

the ideas they pass on have made many women fight for their rights. Some men fought alongside their daughters to secure a good future for them, to the point of making them queens, as Genghis Khan did for his 7 daughters. Genghis Khan raised the role and status of women in the Mongol Empire. He fought to give much importance to his daughters, in this direction they received different rewards for their military and diplomatic skills, they controlled the Silk Route, assisted their father in his campaigns in China and Persia, etc. Still, in this story, it is important to mention that Genghis Khan had also a son, Ögedei, which was unhappy about the powerful role of his sisters which were mentioned in the Chinese reports, Vatical letters, royal Armenian Chronicles, Muslim histories and the Taoist Temples. After his father died, he killed all his female relatives to consolidate another social order and sustained the mass raping of thousands of girls to take revenge on the resilience and strength of the women. More recent examples of men that deprive and men that fight for women’s rights are the protests in Poland for women’s rights to decide on their bodies. Protests attended by a lot of men, fathers who want to defend the rights of their daughters and husbands who want to defend the rights of their wives. In the end, through this analysis, we can see men who have taken the rights of women and men who have fought to get them back. Knowing the history and the present, I wonder if it is not the time for women to take a more responsible attitude towards their rights and fight equally beside men for human rights.

The Curious Mind is a segment exploring social and psychological effects on the mind. With a new topic each issue, this month we take a look at...
Peer Preasure & Smoking Behaviours Smoking is infamously a deadly habit, it is the cause of many premature deaths and dangerous diseased. Then why is it that smokers continue to hold their death sentence between their fingers and seal their lips as they inhale it? Smoking is detected to be a behavioural problem, therefore psychological factors pull major strings when it comes to the ifs and the buts. What makes this subject on the mind so intriguing is the root causes of the need to pick up a certain habit. Peer pressure is a source that weighs heavy on a young mind that is ready to be influenced by its environment. Especially more vulnerable youth are most subject to this.
Generally, smoking begins within the teen years, the average age being as young as 13! Majority of the population adopted this behaviour before they become a young adult. Although less likely people will start smoking at a later stage in their lives, which can most often be much easier to give up than the former group of people. It is well known that nicotine is the drug in the tobacco the culprit for this addiction. They have the power to manipulate the thoughts and feelings over time due to the effect on the brain system. As a result, quitting smoking has consequences shaped NEWS MAGAZINE 14 as withdrawal syndrome, these include depression,
insomnia, anger and appetite increase. Terminating a behaviour with such overbearing negative results before seeing the light at the end of the tunnel is without a
doubt an extremely difficult task. It is reported that only a tiny percentage can quit per year and those who go through it alone without professional assistance go back to smoking within a short period. The withdrawal symptoms can become very overwhelming and therefore going back into old habits appears like the easy way out. So, if we look into the reasons behind smoking, smokers will tell you it was because they were in a moment of stress and the opportunity presented itself to release that stress. Other stories come as being curious about smoking who to their immediate family or primary careers smoking around them from a young age or seeing this action in the media which inspires it. Peer pressure gives one the urge to impress their social circle, wanting validation and confirmation that they are alike and can be included within the friendship circle. Conforming attitudes and behaviours that may be real or only imagined in one’s mind, can lead to irreversible behavioural traits. As we grow older we understand there is a standard in society and we try to see where we fit in within this equation. Not wanting to be an outcast or a sense of belonging is the force driving this sensation. Smokers report going for a cigarette when there is a stressful situation and use this as a coping mechanism, however, studies do not show official results backing up the theory. An educated guess will acknowledge that taking action when experiencing negativity makes one feel as if they re doing something to change the situation, in other

The 2019- 2020 Queensland bushfires in Australia is now known as the black Summer. The unusually intense wildfire was spread quickly due to the exceptionally dry conditions. 72 thousand square miles of land have been burned down since the start of this unfortunate natural disaster. 3 billion creatures were affected by this fire, the world was saddened by the images spread across the globe of innocent kangaroos burning to death. 34 people were killed while trying to stop the fire or trying to save the animals. Although the bushfires are not an unusual occurrence in Australia, the size of the fire and fatalities makes it most tragic and unforgettable.
At the start of this year, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had stepped down as senior members of the royal family, losing their HRH titles and closing the door on their Sussex Royal brand. Their decision to leave may have seemed sudden on the surface but it was not too much of a surprise as a former American actress, Meghan had implied she had struggled with the lifestyle and rules that came with being Harry’s wife. They had stressed that leaving did not mean they will cut all ties with their family and that they will stay loyal to the Queen. They now live in their Californian home. Coronavirus is a contagious disease that attacks the respiratory system, it caused the pandemic we are still dealing with. Unfortunately, this is the most unforgettable event of 2020, it has caused a lot of deaths and after-effects to survivors. The disease was first identified in December of 2019 in Wuhan, China. It was rumoured that contact with bats had caused this disease. Birds were the catalyst in transmitting the mammal caused the disease to humans. Covid-19 is spread by air if people are within the same atmosphere for a certain amount of time. The symptoms include fever, loss of taste and smell and breathing difficulties.
George Floyd, killed by those who were supposed to protect civilians. “I can’t breathe” were his last words on his last breathe. The American policemen involved in this brutal inhumane injustice were condemned by protestors all over the world. Despite the lockdown people flooded the streets to spread the words of Black Lives Matter, those who could not join in the protests physically, took to social media to express their support. Unfortunately, this was not the last of the police brutality, similar scenes were repeated- even throughout the middle of the protests. Statues of slave traders were knocked down through the world.
How can we not include the battle of Trump and Biden... The world had their eyes on the United States elections and of course, the drama that came with it. Donald Trump’s live tweets at times took centre stage, he claimed the results were a fraud and demanded recounts. Joe Biden won the elections and delivered his victory speech, while Donald Trump continued his angry tweets in protest. But, the world surely will not forget Trump anytime NEWS MAGAZINE 17 soon.

custom-made for its inhabitant, as the entire space works for the hag’s personal purpose (to attract and capture lost children). The inevitable question that follows is: could you tell the same about your own house? The truth is, it is not until the 1960s that Archigram, a London-based avant-garde architectural group drew attention to the relationship between a house and its owner. Through a series of pamphlets displaying hypothetical projects, their point was that in a world with ‘3000 choices available for car purchasing, 300 hours of TV programs to pick from…’, there were only a couple of housing choices that were expected to match the wide variety of human lifestyles. In their view, ‘a new house should have the same marketing research as a detergent, before being launched’. Dissatisfaction with the modernist after-the-war reconstruction of Europe was the fuel that pushed this collective to dream of alternative urban scenarios. Modernism in architecture was marked by functionalism, the architectural style based on the idea that ‘form follows function’. Its original purpose was strongly related to the precarious condition of the postwar built environment, therefore the equation that the architects had to deal with implied the scarcity of resources
and the huge demand for housing units. Hence, the ascension of prefabricated elements usage together with modular architecture, an efficient solution that allowed fast production with minimum expenses. As a result, the mass production of one size housing units within collective living projects did manage to satisfy the functional need for human shelter and hygiene, although it let no space for further discussion about living conditions and lifestyle. As Archigram put it, architecture had become self-serving, unoriginal and repetitive – it just wasn’t fun or creative anymore. So they made it fun and creative. The collective’s theoretical approach did not contradict the modernist movement, but instead took its principles and added the human component. In fact, one of their most famous projects, the ‘Plug-In City’, is based on the modernist principle of modules. In contrast to the functionalist city where rigid highrise modular buildings were randomly disposed within wide urban space, the Plug-In City optimistically pictures a city where the in-between space becomes the center-piece, that is, a mega-machine that powers living modules and connects the services between them. In this scenario, it is the infrastructure that becomes the rigid component, in opposition with the living units, which become flexible. In accordance to the diversity of people,

these living units could be added to and removed from the infrastructural scheme, with a fluctuation that doubles the rhythm of city life itself. The idea of a dynamic, ever-growing city is therefore put forward by the group of architects, their ideology insisting on the liberation from the concept of permanence: a family is a group of individuals with individual needs, an ever-growing organism to which the house needs to adapt progressively. However, the utopia of the ‘Plug-In City’ arose in times of postwar revival, when particular importance was given to the healing environment: hence the central infrastructural element of the design. The consequence can be seen at the level of the housing unit: Archigram never imagined generous housing units. To them, it was the common space
that mattered, the inbetween urban space. As for the house modules, although custom-made for every individual’s needs, they were always designed at their minimum dimensions. Nowadays, on the other hand, on the background of a predominantly restricted common space doubled by a continuous increase in the importance of the private space of the house, the balance is proportionally reversed. The inaccessibility to the space of the many ought to be supplanted by the intimate space. No matter how attractive a small house might seem from the outside, this Christmas please keep in mind: small houses are made out of gingerbread!

A Silver Lining WORDS BY ELMAS MEHMET
As we are approaching the end of this fateful year. As described by some with an ample palette of words, from an ample palette of perspectives ranging from “weird”, “tricky” and “challenging”, to “catastrophic”, “dreadful” and “impossible.” We should keep our spirits high and think of it as a circle, will start anew, put an end to a series of events, will switch the direction, transform the general mood and will eventually turn everything that is lost. Human lives as well as opportunities of any nature, planned adventures as well as a simple carefree outdoor setting for one’s favourite pastime activity, into a memory. And with that mindset, we could try to draw the line and look back to the year that is (almost) over with the clarity of mind of those who already know what they are leaving behind.
Cancelled From a cultural point of view, both for workers in the field of music, theatre and entertainment and for the lovers of said forms of art, the word, equally ordinary and dreaded, which has been the absolute ruler of 2020, is “cancellation”. For those artists who were two days away from their performance, having planned and prepared down to the smallest detail for the previous two years. As well as for those who had just enthusiastically confirmed an extensive worldwide tour for an NEWS MAGAZINE

album that might have kept them off the stage and inside the studio for a time long enough to make them feel just like a jack in the box, ready to spring out at the smallest impulse. For those fans who had already made compromises, taken days off from work, booked flight tickets and hotels and travelled thousands of kilometres, being just days away from witnessing their favourite expression of art from their favourite artist, as well as those who were just starting to go through the aforementioned process. Cancelled. The concert is cancelled. The play is cancelled. Tomorrow’s show is cancelled. The whole month’s performances are cancelled. The entire 2020-21 season is cancelled. It’s cancelled for the ones who
have to pay their bills out of the object of the cancellation, but it’s also cancelled for those whose main joy is experiencing the product of the previous ones’ work. There have been exceptions, though implemented arduously and with a great compromise – huge spaces used at only a fraction of their capacity – limitation of personnel – adaptation of the stage to respect social distancing; some have proven to be an enduring success and others have fallen victim to the general norms at some point. In the beginning, it was all a “break” intended to be used for thought and self-exploration, as well as nurturing compassion and empathy. Nowadays, the questions linger: How long will this break be? What will the state of things be once the break is over? Connected
It’s a funny word, isn’t it? Its sound is not beau-
tiful, but its (primordial) meaning is. And yet, even though it is now a commonly used word, it’s rarely uttered with its primordial meaning, if at all. Anyhow, in the absence of the primordial type of connection, even “modern” connection can be a valid substitute. The artists understood it and reached out to their audience with alternative means: by creating “personal-official” accounts on (social) media platforms, sharing all sorts of content, including, but not limited to what their audience mainly knows and follows them for. By hosting live streams answering their fans’ questions in real-time, sharing stories about themselves and their thoughts and hopes for the present-future. By sharing personal information that perhaps wouldn’t have gone through otherwise – from secondary talents or hobbies to information about or even interaction with their family members or pets. They often do things

out of their comfort zone – improvisations or performances of pieces that are not in their usual repertoire – perhaps even fulfilling the audience’s requests. Which leads to the question: is there even a distinction between the primordial connection and the modern one? Does connection only exist in a “face to face” situation, when one or a relatively small number of artists emit and receive energy from the thousands of people standing in front of them? Can a real connection exist when the artist or handful of artists interact verbally and intellectually with their followers, only through a filter, in a different space and possibly a different time? Which one is real(er)? And this is where each of our perspectives come into play. Is the modern connection a connection at all? Could we survive just with it? For how long? Is there a silver lining or is deafening silence all that there is?

INTERVIEW BY ESRA KANBUR
Author Sean Michael Wilson is debunking the myth that graphic novels are just for a certain age group. Sean has written over 30 books including comic books and stories based on social issues, he is the first British person to have won a medal in the Japanese government’s ‘International Manga Award’ in 2016.
PORTAITS OF VIOLENCE IS NOW AVALIABLE IN TURKISH! Do you like watching anime, and if so, which one would you recommend to someone who has never watched anime? No, actually I rarely watch anime. People are surprised by that as they think of manga and anime as basically the same.
The illustrations in your graphic novels are exquisite. Are you interested in illustrating one of your books in the future? Yes, because of beauty, not because of time. I have moderately good art skill myself but not enough to do a good job to the level that my books need. To develop that skill would take years and I may never be as good as some of the artists I work with. So it’s better that I focus on writing the stories and work with artists together in a close team.
What is the most important element when it comes to writing a book in this genre? Two aspects are going on when considering a new story: is it interesting for me and will a publisher go for it? Those two are not easy to combine in this type of economic system! How did your interest in comic books and graphic novels start? It was swept up in the glamorous beauty of being a comic book writer when I was 12 years old. Or it seemed a wonderful, artistic thing to me at the time. It’s been my childhood dream come true. I chose to work in comic books because they are better than books that only have text! I’m exaggerating to make a point as I always love novels and non-fiction textbooks, etc. But comic books MAGAZINE 30 do have something that text-only booksNEWS don’t have. In general, what I like is the joy of doing creative work and a sense of artistic achievement.
During your time at university you concentrated on writing poetry, what are your thoughts on spoken word poetry and would you like to pursue it? Yes, I’d love to do some spoken word poetry and speaking OUT the beauty and cadence of language is very important to me. I love singing and practising eloquence of speaking. As to actually writing poetry now I rarely do that. Most people look back on the poetry they wrote when they were 19 or 20 with embarrassment. But in all honesty, I look back at the poetry and short sketches I wrote then with amazement at how good it is! I don’t know how that young, inexperienced, innocent me wrote that good stuff, but I can not do it now. Even if I tried I think I could not write such poetry now. But it’s ok because I’m focused on a different type of writing now. If you could time travel to the early 20th century before modern comic books were established, which one of your books would you give to a comic strip enthusiast and why? Ha, interesting question! I would give them my Many Not the Few’ book so they could see the way comics will develop into a ‘serious’ artform tackling social issues, and also so they could see their future because from the middle of the book it goes past the early 20th century! However, there were already some cartoons then going into aspects of society and everyday life. It was a bit later that the ‘comics are for kids’ silly stereotype became normal. Jeremy Corbyn, the former Labour Party leader wrote the foreword for your book ‘The Many Not The Few.’ Why did you
want to base this book on the formation of the Labour party? It is about the wider struggle of progressive people’s movements in the UK, going right back to the peasants’ revolt of the 14th century, and includes fighting against elite abuse in the 17th, the development of unions in the 19th century, votes for women, etc… The Labour Party is only one element of it, though important. I’m on the left of the labour party spectrum so I was delighted when Corbyn wrote the introduction and gave a speech about the book at a special event actually IN the House of Commons. Of course, he has fallen from grace recently, but I think the policies developed under his leadership were good ones that would have improved Britain a lot. If you were to be on TED Talks, what topic would you like to do a speech on and why? I’m interested in a wide variety of things, so I would like to talk about how comic books are a good way to take in and learn information because of the mix of text and visuals; I would also like to one on the need to reverse the destruction of house gardens in Japan since the amount is decreasing by, I estimate, around 10 million trees less a year – I’ve already written various newspaper article on this topic. I’d also like to do a talk on the importance of developing critical thinking skills, the ability to analyse and to decide things for yourself. That’s a very basic thing but there is still a great lack of these tendencies and abilities. A key concern for me is how we can create a better economic and social system (a BESS, as I call it), which can go beyond capitalism to something better for people and the environment.

Some of your works are comic book adaptations of existing work, such as Sweeney Todd and A Christmas Carol. Is there any story that you think is not suitable to be made into a comic book? The ones least suitable are the ones with the least visuals and the most abstract ideas. I would love to do illustrated versions of the short stories of Jorge Luis Borges, but think it would be very difficult in many cases because most of them are explorations of metaphysical aspect. But I would love to try! But even there the question may be: could the images bring something new to the table? Could the juxtaposition of images and text alter the way people cognitively take in and process the ideas? Our Portraits of Violence book is a good example, as it’s a comic book version of 10 sociological theories of violence. It may come over as not that suitable for visualisation. But just to take one simple example, in the chapter about Noam Chomsky’s Manufacturing Consent it mentions that the amount of giant media corporations has shrunk down from about 50 in 1983 to just 6 now. Then next to that we have a simple image showing 50 dots reducing to just 6 dots. That visual helps the info become easier to take in and remember. But there is more to it than the visuals just playing ‘back up’ for the text. It can also be like a
dance between the words and the images, in which they create something more than the sum of each part by moving smoothly together. Some of your books are co-written. What is it like working on a book with another writer and do you prefer it? I prefer to do it myself as I’m more of a ‘lone wolf’ than a team player. But many of my books have an expert in the area who I draw upon for information or who checks that what I’ve done is right, etc. I value their greater knowledge. One of your books was recently translated into Turkish for the first time. What made you want Portraits Of Violence to be introduced to Turkish readers? That’s simple, the Turkish publisher wanted it! That book came out in Turkish and Korean – which is the first time any of my books came out in those two languages. So I was very pleased. Especially as I was long term friends with two Turkish people, from Izmir, and it was nice that they could read my book in their language. You are actively seeking for your comic books to have a film adaptation, why is it important for you to have a film production and would it be in animation form?
That’s simple too: for money! I love and respect books, but 90% of books don’t make much money - movies make far more money. I don’t care about being rich but I have bills to pay and food to put on the table. So it would help me financially if a movie version was made of one or two of my books. In terms of artistic value, I prefer books to films, for various reasons. Earlier in 2020, we signed an option for our Musashi book to be developed into a movie. But the option stage is the very first step and it’s tough to get into taken all the way to be produced as a movie. Topics such as politics and culture are featured in your social issue themed books. What is the process of choosing the topic you want to write about? Choosing the topic is not the hard part, getting a publisher or funder to accept it is tough! Generally what holds back art is not a lack of ideas but a lack of money. There are many, many aspects of politics, culture, history and society in general that I would love to explore. But getting a publisher to agree to publish the book or getting a grant to do it etc is tough. For example, I would love to do more books on Scottish history, but so far have been funnelled into focusing on Japanese history. I have a book on George Orwell that I want to do but have not yet able to find a publisher for it. What advice would you give you to anyone looking to become a writer? I’m forced to mention money again here. 90% of people writing books don’t
make much money from it. So if that is what you want to do, deep in your heart, then great, go for it. The key thing about being a writer is that it gives you a meaningful activity. And that is the key thing us human beings are moved by, doing something that seems worth doing. But realise that you would probably make more money as a teacher or IT consultant or in business etc. It’s also important to consider what publishers want and learn how they want you to submit ideas to them. You can normally see some info about this on their submissions page. How has the lockdown experience been for you and would you like to write a book about this current climate? One good thing about being a writer is that you are in semi-permanent lockdown anyway! You write by yourself in your room, for the most part. So its easier to survive such a difficult time as this, mentally and moneywise. An interesting part of this year for me is how lots of conservative governments in many areas have abandoned their ‘limited government’ philosophy and provided billions in funding to companies and individuals to get us through the epidemic. As the Slovenian philosopher, Slavoj Zizek has said this year has been one of ‘war communism’ which has shown that relying on the ‘free market’ to fix everything in troubled times is not enough. I’m wondering how this will affect the way we organise society in the future.

ON PERSIAN POETRY VIOREL OLARU
“We have a history of masteing poetry behind us. Our ancient poetic heritage is a precious treasure... In terms of its roots and skills, we enjoy the highest ranking in poetry among all nation.“ -Ali Khamenei There are no direct records of ancient Persian literature since it was orally transmitted, and eventually, it was lost or partially absorbed by the literature of later periods. The most ancient Iranian literary monument, parts of which have survived to this day, is Avesta, the holy book of Zoroastrianism. Another important literary heritage of the pre-Islamic Iran is the Khwaday-Namak (The Book of Lords), a masterpiece by Abdolqasem Ferdowsi ( 940-1020 ). It is worth mentioning that the first poet to undertake the task of turning this chronicle into verse was Daqiqi, a poet at the court of the Samanids. Daqiqi was murdered when he had composed only a thousand couplets out of nearly 60,000. These couplets were incorporated by Ferdowsi, with due acknowledgements, in his poem that consists of three cycles-mythological (Pishdadiyan), heroic (Keyanian) and historic (Sassanian). The first cycle, beginning with the birth of man and the kingdom of Pishdadiyan, is pure mythology. The next cycle describes the Iranian kingdom of Keyanian, the long story of a heroic age in which myth and legend combine to produce an ancient epic, the exploits of Rostam, Sohrab, Siyavash, Esfandiar and many other heroes. The last cycle mixes history with legend while providing an account of the history of the Sassanian monarchy, the last Persian dynasty before the Arab conquest. parable from the whole body of Persian poetry, either traditional or modern. Simin Behbahani (1927-2014 ), in a poem titled “I Used to Say Back Then”, is about a playmate who pretended to make a snake out of a piece of rope and put it on his shoulders to scare the girl who screamed: “take them off, I am really afraid”. Even at a first glance, it is recognized the reference to the myth of Zahhak, “ the serpent-shouldered king, as related in Shahnameh. What the poet means is that a plaything, like a rope tied on the shoulders, maybe expressive of an imagination that can lead to the actual practice of violence if not balanced in the process of upbringing. from initial premises to climax and resolution and where all details are subordinated to the requirements of an overriding theme or idea. The unit of Persian poetry is the best (distich or line) and is well known that best Persian poets succeed in expressing profound thoughts within the confines of a single verse. The classic Persian literature emerged in about the 9th and 10th centuries. The most important feature of Persian tradition is the conventionality of its themes and imagery. The major subjects and forms of Persian poetry were set in the first centuries of its appearance and have remained almost the same for about a thousand years. Traditional poets have composed their works within the requirements of formal canons, and originality was achieved not by deviating from the norm but by improving upon it. At the Persian royal courts, poetry was an important source of knowledge and education for the kings and princes and significant way of maintaining the ethics and morality of aristocratic class.
line is a blank) is used for epigrams, maxims and aphorisms. Chronologically, Persian poetry has been divided into five periods or styles. The first, comprising the 10th to the 12th centuries, is called Khorasni. It is characterized by the relative simplicity of its language and an exalted style. Because almost all works of this period were written under royal patronage, most of them are panegyrics. The second period, from 12th to the 15th centuries is characterized as Iraqi. Its predominant style is distinguished by highly literate language, Mellifluous Metrs, and the prominence of lyric poetry. Sa’di ( 1210-1292) whose verses: Of one Essence is the human race, Thusly has Creation put the Base; One Limb impacted is sufficient, For all Others to feel the Mace. Are placed at the entrance to the Hall of Nations in New York, and Hafez ( 1315-1390 ), the two most important lyric poets, belong to this literary epoch. The third period extends from the 15th to the 18th centuries and is referred to as Indian style. It is also marked by the prominence of lyric poetry, but it lacks the linguistic elegance and musicality of the preceding period. The fourth period, from the 18th to the mid- 20th century, is known as the Literary Revival. It is meant as a reaction against the poetic stagnation and linguistic traits of the late Indian style, and a return to the earlier literary tradition. Since World War II, a fifth period has emerged. It is characterized by a radical break with the literary tradition of the past, and by the introduction of fresh imagery and new poetic forms despite the official state poetry where the traditional poetic forms and imagery are promoted and encouraged. Finally, it should be highlighted that the greatest charm of Persian poetry lies in its rhythmical musicality and associative meaning of words and their overtones, the characteristics which are often, if not always, lost in translations.
-The main forms of traditional Persian poetry include Qasida, Mathnawi, Qhazal and Rubai. -The Qasida (ode) is a long poem monorhyme, usually of a panegyric, didactic, or religious nature. -The Qhazal, a shorter monorhyme of about seven to fourteen lines, is usually amorous or mystical. -The Mathnavi, written in rhyming couple- Therefore, if one wishes to feel the taste of ts, is used for narrative themes. Certainly, 2020 was an unprecedented year and things like ‘having a wedding’ or ‘going on a world trip’ certainly did not cut. But what about some of your non-tangible resolutions such as being kinder or having a balanced life, were they too affected by the restrictions of the year? Many have created home gyms to stick to their goals of having the best body yet, others have taken this as an opportunity to start their own business. So, tick, tick tick! Here are two resolution ideas that most of us can benefit from if we added them to our lists! Mindful Shopping

Look into companies that are still using this vial and ancient way of creating clothes. By purchasing their products you are encouraging them to continue their horrid ways. Please consider making this a resolution, look into makeup products, skin care lines and clothing before you spend another penny on them! Being Non-judgemental The world needs more kindness, the horror stories and doomsday does not have to be real. We cannot help natural disasters, but we can prevent bullying, depression, stress to a certain extent if we try our best to be better people. Look at areas of your life and try to see what you can improve upon. Being judgemental is one of the biggest human flaws, we make assumptions about each other based on past experienced or educated guessed but one size doe snot fit all. We should be more open-minded and give people a chance before writing them off. For example, not all disabilities are visible, mental illness a real and raw struggle, being kind and understanding can open doors, create unexpected friendships and bring more light into your life.
Of course, this has a double meaning; being careful with our budget and not falling prey to the advertisement trap, spending our hard-earned cash on items that are fairtrade and long-lasting, rather than spending money on fast-fashion. HOW TO EXERCISE CONFIDENCE MEGHAN REINHARDT
Confident people are mainly more attractive and dare I say often more successful, but hat makes confident people tick and how can we inhabit some of that fairy dust? Having “suffered” from being painfully shy up until my adulthood, I have a few tips I’d like to share with teh rest of teh world so that you too can function at your highest potential. one must start, baby steps will get you to your ultimate goal. Pretending to be confident when you need to be will make others think that you are. Imagine watching yourself from the outside, what do you think you will see? If you think what you will be making you nervous because you don’t look unnatural, then this is an indication that you must stay relaxed, chilled and easy-going. While you are faking it, you are slowly becoming that confident person. When I had to muster up my strength and put my all into making it appear like I was the most confident person in the world, therefore I had no choice but to make it look like that. It is like putting on a show, acting if you will. But slowly you start to embody it, faking it until you become it. Moderation and balance are advised when youing this technique. If you pretend too much you may lose a bit of who you are, this is not what we are aiming for. Be cautious and aware of your actions and once you have a Fake it ‘till you make it! grip on it, ensure you do what feels natural, and38 live your truth, while seeing your poThis expression can feel unauthentic as NEWS MAGAZINE tential and what can happen if you think if you are only pretending to be confident less and do more. but having this quality. But, this is where Firstly we need to tackle why people are shy, this can be fro various reasons. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder can have a major effect on a person and stripe them away from their confidence, this can hit at any age. Even those who were confident as a child and open to world experiences can undergo such trauma that causes them to want to protect themselves from the world. Sometimes as a child the environment can have a major effect on the growth and behaviours of the child, they may want to keep to themselves scared of sharing who they are with others as they are frightened of being judged or coming across a certain way that can make them feel uncomfortable. Confidence is a skill and it can be gained and regained. Here are some tips I’ve gathered over the years on my journey on finding my ground and exercising my confidence.
Look the part! This does not have to mean having good looks, a lot of the time - this may seem shallow - confident people are not the “fairest of them all” ala, their bubbly personality makes them instantly better looking, as their personalities are so big it becomes all you see. Some people like to feel confident with self-care, this may come in the form of skin routine, makeup or cosmetic procedures (to the point you end up looking nothing like yourself, which can make you feel like an imposter in your skin!), dressing well or simply just having good hygiene. All these things can contribute to the portion of looking the part, however, what I want to focus on is body language. Firstly, posture is a great indicator when it comes to how you come across and how you feel in the moment. if you have a good posture with a straight and relaxed back, you can look open to conversation, as opposed to being crushed which makes you look small and closed in. If you place your hands on your hips, legs a width pat, tall back and staring straight ahead like a superhero, contain this composure for a minute then you will embody the superhero feeling and be unstoppable. Of course, you will need to do this out of sight! Having a good role model
Queen Bee, Beyonce do?” While you are in a situation where you must exercise confidence, this may be having to do a public speech at work, taking part in a school play, going up to someone you like and asking them out. ask yourself “what would... do?” and try to imagine their actions in that same situation, and do the same. This is an excellent way to do what you need to do at the moment. Once you overcome the huddle of getting started, you will stop being your role model and be yourself mid-operation. An experiment that took place in the UK suggests that more than half of adults would describe themselves as shy. So, next time you are in a social situation where you need to step up, remember that everyone is on the same boat and feel nervous about their appearance, their voice, their intelligence, how others may perceive them or if something might go wrong. Once you learn the skill of being confident you will see that nothing feels better than trusting your abilities, accepting and being aware of your flaws and strengths that no one can tell you otherwise nor shake you down!
Have you noticed how you mood life when you watch a comedy or drive better after watching Fast & Furious, as you may be been inspired to do so? Just like that, having a good role model can have the same effect. If there is someone real, imagined, through the media that can make you feel happy and excited, you may want to opt to use them as a reference point. Think of it as your daily mantra, pose, speak and feel how you think your role model would. You NEWS MAGAZINE may have heard some people say, “what would

AN UNEXPECTED RETREAT

he reality which we started to live in at the beginning of this year brought into our lives the incredible range of new additives which tossed away our daily lifestyles. Now, after the first precarious attempt and more than ten following months of the new life cookery lessons, we have earned the basic knowledge of how to deal with the dishes of the current world. However, living the new way of life by following the new rules, could make our presence seem tasteless with the dull smells of tiredness. Luckily, there are plenty of ways how we can transform these not so pleasant menu items into the most delicious food we have ever been able to prepare and experience. Another great thing is that the sources which we need for this type of life-cooking are at the reach of our hands with vast availability. Also, needless to say, this is the lifetime opportunity to learn how to cook differently and to keep this knowledge of Michelin-Stars gems for the rest of our lives. Speaking from experience, I have re-discovered some special elements and truly experienced them in their full strength for the first time in my life. A mixture of current circumstances and an accidental opportunity served as a challenging journey of helping at a hospital- the best cooking lessons in my life. And so now the most important question is - what are these amazing ingredients? The answer is simple and neat: help, kindness and gratitude. NEWS MAGAZINE
If I were you, I would now definitely be thinking ‘oh, this is again the boring positivity and motivational stuff the internet is full-of’. No, no, but yes. Or kind of yes, because these elements are the key spices which are changing the taste of our lives into its greater versions, also yes, this is not new information, as the hot water has already been invented. It is just so important and worthy to remind these factors to each other in a way which suits our current state, as it is easy to forget it. And no, this is not again one of the meaningless quotes as here is elbow grease what counts, nor sweet talks. Simple and neat as that. So if you are currently looking for an energetic, healthy boost for your life, or if you have the same mind flavourless meal every day for the ten months and you are bored of it, accompanied with some urge to experience something new, respectively better to say, to cook with the great old

ingredients using the new range of elements at the same time, this is the best answer for you. Helping others and being kind and grateful is something which we have been taught since early childhood, we just need to re-discover and apply it into our current lives. It might sound difficult, however, this kind of behaviour is so natural to us, that once we focus on it, everything will amazingly fall into the right places. And the other awesome aspect on this set up is that by managing to have these great dishes on our table make us feel better and greater and so these feelings encourage us to go for more rounds, spreading the right vibes and – feeding others by inspiring them. And also, exempt uplifting the environment around us and having enriched mind-food there are plenty of other benefits waiting to be discovered alongside the journey, which has never been experienced in this combination of additives before and which also impact the transfer of the old dishes into the new exciting masterpieces. Like learning so much about ourselves and seeing how we are growing into the better version of us, as well as the meeting new likeminded people or gaining the ability to see new opportunities. And there is also my favourite one, which I highly recommend you to try. It is easy and helps you digest your new daily life better. The hack is to have a closer look at the people around you - family members, friends, colleagues. The ability to
see them under a different point of view based on your new diet and experience will uncover the facts which ones are eating the mind-junk-food, or co-existing unhealthily. And with this information just take care of yourself and decide the quality and quantity of people you want in your life to balance it. It is an interesting feeling to truly realise how people in our bubble behave and treat others in real life under these unexpected new conditions through which we can see each other’s cooking habits. Of course, every person is unique with their taste, favourite dishes, chef tools and we also need to bear in mind that it is impossible to know the right recipe for everything from each point of view. But the most important perspectives are to see if there are used the fair trade ingredients, cooking with the right intentions and ability to share. Last but not least, please do not forget everyone is born with the ability to cook the exact recipes on how to deal with the dishes of 2020. We are going through the various range of situations from the great moments to the difficulties as part of our journey – and we are just learning to cook as we go (which applies for our whole life, not only for the current months). Sometimes the challenges are only in our heads or have something to do with crossing our comfort zone, some of them just happened and we can not do anything about it. Or on the other hand, we experience the situations which we need to solve actively, there are also the other unpleasant cases, which unnecessary and sadly are coming from the environment which we would like to enrich – and all this is mixed with sunny days full of happiness, joy and blessings. So you might now ask – is there a special universal treatment which we can use for all of them - to enjoy, to go through or to heal? The answer is yes, simple: help, kindness and gratitude.

ISABELLA CASTRO
A guide to surviving in the corporate world! Taking everything I have learned over the years and sharing raw advice with people who truly need it. So, take a walk in my stilleos and let me show you around.
Preparing For An Interview Congratulations, if you have successfully booked yourself an interview. Interviews can come in form of a telephone call, which can start anywhere from ten minutes to an hour. If you have successfully answered the questions and won over the caller then you will be invited for a face to face interview. Some companies will skip the phone stage and move straight to the formal interview at their office. Depending on the company, there may be some tests to demonstrate your computer skills and then a final interview with the rest of the shortlisted candidates. Preparing for phone interview: It is good practice to research the company you will be having this call with. Firstly going on their company website and understanding their goals and what services they provide will give you confidence in the way you speak to them. It is a good idea to make notes of the basics such as what they do, their philosophy, location and the year they were founded. Some interviewers will ask you about what you know about them, this gives them insight on your interest in the role and if you are what they are looking for. Also, it is a two-way street, do not forget that you are also researching to see if they are a good fit for you too. The interviewer will ask you to talk a bit about yourself, if you do not have work experience then start by mentioning your academic experience. If you have a lot of work experience then try to talk about the ones that are closely related to the role you have applied for, or that have elements within the role that can be highlighted if you are trying for a career change. The interviewer will ask you a few questions that are bespoke to their company and the programmes they use. Such as “How you used Microsoft Office programmes and how efficient are you? Preparing for a face to face interview: Presentation is very important, you must look the part. It is best to be only five minutes early in any case. The interviewer will tell you before you are invited if there will be any tests for you. Observe your environment and the employees to see if you can see yourself working with them. This will usually lead the way for how you will come across during your interview. Prepare some questions you would like to ask that may be important to you, such as salary expectation, annual leave days and probation period. VISION COREECTION SURGERY
L
aser or lens surgery is to correct the vision and make you less reliant on glasses, by reshaping the surface of the eye. The surgeon will examine your eye health, taking into account your age and medical conditions to decide which type of surgery is best for you. LASIK or SMILE surgery can cost from 1,500 to 2,500 in the UK. If you are willing to travel and save a bit, then Poland and India have the lowest costs for this surgery- but extensive research is advised. People who want to get this surgery may have multiple reasons, ranging from; being short or long-sighted, having a very high prescription, to having astigmatism. The ideal patient for this surgery will have a stable eye prescription for over two years. Here we will look at the two fundamental categories of eye surgeries, laser and lens. Laser Eye Surgery has three main types, the first is the Lasik. It is performed by peeling away the protective layer on the top surface of the eyes. The second step is to correct the shape of the cornea under it. The protective layer is carefully sealed back without any need for stitches. The second is type is Smile, this does not require as much of a gap to work with as the self-healing hole is created on the protective layer and reshape the cornea through there. The final type can sound a lot more
extreme as the skin covering the corona is removed and it is then reshaped with a laser, the skin has self-healing properties and can grow back naturally. After the surgery, one can feel some discomfort which can continue for up to six months and there can be visible red marks on the whites of the eye which will clear away within a few weeks. Lens surgery comes in two types which are similar to PIOL and RLE. This surgery is for people who may not qualify for laser eye surgery. This can be due to the age factor or patients who have a very high level of astigmatism. An artificial lens is placed under the natural lens, it can be viewed as a permanent contact lens, and the many advantages include being able to comfortably sleep and swim it. This surgery is done by making a small cut on the protective layer of the eye and insert the lens inside it. The healing process is similar to the laser eye surgery, however, there is a likely hood of developing cataracts later on in life. You may be wondering why vision correction is part of the Looking Good section, this can also be a cosmetic surgery if the patient is choosing to undergo this surgery as they no longer want to wear glasses for aesthetic purposes. Some people feel it does not go with their look and opt for this option.

ONLINE KINDERGARTEN, REMOTE WORK & A BEAUTIFUL BURNOUT CRISTINA EKSIOGLU
After almost 10 intense months, I can say that I managed to combine all the ideas mentioned above - online kindergarten, remote and burnout - fixed in the stated order, without understanding exactly how it got here. The only thing I know at the moment is that the adaptation is the only chance of success. Through these lines, I will state based on the experiences gained, how it has affected the emergence of the virus and all decisions made globally, the perspective of an adult on career, family life and professional and material investments. February 2020 - the beginning of change As we all know, the middle of February came with worrying news from the Far East. From mere rumours, it has come to “virus storms.” Suddenly we found ourselves locked in houses to protect ourselves - at first, it was hoped for a short time from an invisible enemy. Whether we knew it or not, from small to large, we learned to wash our hands, to disinfect, to cook, to work and to learn together. All this was possible in areas and families that had at least average possibilities; the poor or helpless, remained in the same situation and will become hopeless. Online kindergarten and remote job browsing Returning to experiences, I woke up at home, with a 4-year-old child, who had to go online every day to be present at kindergarten. Even if it sounds weird at first, we tried to do kindergarten online for at least 15 minutes a day. Moreover, I also experienced online ballet - only in one day, because it is very strange and difficult for such a small child to stay focused and follow the movements of the ballet teacher, even for 10 minutes. Because immediately after the adoption of the state of emergency I became technically unemployed, I could share a safe laptop with my daughter - she only needed 10 minutes. The rest of the time, I tried to read for my doctoral thesis, but also to apply to various remote jobs (work from home). It was strange that after 7 years of safe work, I would be able to redo my CV in Romanian and
English, to create different accounts on sites like E-jobs or LinkedIn. The insecurity of finding a job quickly becomes even more pressing when you know you want a job online, given that you do not know if you can take your child to kindergarten, and you will certainly not have anyone to leave him with, in case physical job. Certainly, the state of agitation, insecurity, technical unemployment, as well as many other factors that appeared within a few hours, affected a lot of people, regardless of the country or area in which they were. This desert and virus wind from China have managed to dry almost the entire world or bring it to the brink of desertification, from several points of view and on many levels. The economic and social plan has been hit hard and will have deep wounds, which may be partially covered in years, and major sacrifices. We can even say that the year of the Metal Rat was the year of the new beginnings. Unfortunately, we can vehemently contradict the specialists in the Chinese zodiac, because this was not a year of success or prosperity. Remembering new beginnings, I experienced the same thing a month after long and diligent job searches. I managed to get the much-desired job at the beginning of the summer, after 3 interviews with Romanian, Serbian and Chinese managers - at that time. The joy of getting a job during a pandemic and a state of emergency is a real joy. Moreover, I managed to work from home, or wherever I wanted, with a good salary and a very pompous and arrogant title: editorialist.
Remote 10 hours a day, online kindergarten, family life and vacation The enthusiasm and joy that I achieved what no one believed, pushed me to be “the super-mum”. I was able to enjoy my job, my stay at home with the child and the maintenance of the house, without feeling tired or frustrated. I managed to work even 10-11 hours a day - 8 hours I worked continuously, only with short breaks of 10, 15 minutes - and then I did something around the house, and in the evening, I would work for a few more hours. Apart from this program, I rarely managed to go out with the child in the afternoon. Even the free time of the weekend we allocate either to household chores or to study to be better and better at work. It is very NEWS MAGAZINE 44 important to work with pleasure and with pleasure, but when frustrations occur, everything turns into an ordeal. That’s how it turned out after a month
and a half at the new job. The vast majority of current jobs - at least in big cities - involve working with teams from different cultures, backgrounds, influences. The same thing happened in this case. The management was a Romanian-Serbian-Chinese mélange. Direct and continuous contact with the Chinese tutor. Even if the job itself was extremely pleasant and challenging, as well as the training sessions with colleagues in Romania, the experience with the trainer that continues to cause me trauma. I don’t get into cultural discussions - which influences - but her way of interacting made me extremely agitated, irascible, and what was even worse, I started to lose my confidence and self-esteem. Being the summer period, I accepted the challenge of combining the useful with the pleasant - because yes, I essentially liked the job, and the money I was earning was beneficial - so I went on vacation with my family. Because I had the option of doing my work schedule, I chose to work from 5 in the morning until 13:00, to have the rest of the day off. That was originally my plan; but as the account at home did not match that at the fair, even though I started work early in the morning, it did not necessarily mean that I would be able to finish on time. This was not because I was not interested, but because I was constantly under pressure. The contemptuous and degrading attitude with which I was treated by the one who was to train me was devastating.
rhythm begins to be present almost every week, the risk of burnout increases. Reaching this stage, as well as the appearance of unexpected health problems - vertigo, neck pain was what made me resign for the first time. After a discussion with the company’s PR, which lasted about an hour, maybe even better, in which I cried with hiccups, I decided to give it another chance, given the fact that at the level of management in Romania did not seem to have the same image my trainer had drawn for me.
The risk of change We all end up balancing what we have and what we want. Being in my final year of my PhD, wanting to write a quality paper, seeing that apart from a relatively good amount of money - but not in line with the work done and the stress endured - the job did not bring me other benefits, on the contrary, I chose to resign. Neither the decision to start a remote job nor the decision to resign “when everyone loses their jobs and I want green horses on the walls”, were shared with those close to me. Decisions and risks must be taken constantly; today maybe more than ever. But, from those analyzed tional labels. There are 6 leadership styles; visionary, affiliative, coaching and participative, directive and pace-setting. For me, all the styles have their time and place. I decide my style according to the profile of project team members, especially to their cultural background and technical competency. Later on, I add/drop a few styles more regarding stakeholder feedbacks. Combinations are the key. Is there an ideal project (real or made-up) that you would like to manage? I would like to manage an NGO (Non-governmental organization) project because I find contributions of NGOs very important towards sustainable community development. NGOs support communities to be self-reliant and motivate the communities to discover their potentials and rely on their resources. What do you think are the biggest problems in work environments? I can answer this question according to my profession. Project management is a late approved profession in Turkey. Some elder employees of the companies like senior functional managers are not sure why project managers are necessary, so they may cause some difficulties with their bypass actions which affects integrity negatively. Another problem is gender equality. Project management is mostly applied in construction and telecommunications. Site work-

This is an outsourced position and you work with the team in the company. The reason I choose this job is that I can be able to benefit from the experience I have gained while working in project management for 10 years. What would you advise anyone wanting to work in your position? The most important issue in project management is the integration of data and integrity of team members. I advise developing communication-based on trust and respect, keeping the visionary style’s percentage as high as we can while combining leadership styles and supporting the development of the team.

orld AIDS Day takes place every year on 1 December to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS, to show international solidarity towards people affected by it, and to remember those who have died of the disease. AIDS became a pandemic in the 1980s, and it continues to be an epidemic in some parts of the world. Approximately 64% of people with HIV live in sub-Saharan Africa, and this disease has claimed the lives of around 35 million people since its outbreak (UNAIDS, 2020). Last year, more than 1.5 million people became infected with HIV, but fortunately, although there is no cure, the majority can live a normal life-span if under regular treatment. Nonetheless, everyone still needs to continue with the fight to eradicate HIV/AIDS, and this starts by helping to reduce the stigma and discrimination associated with it.
HIV status and take antiretroviral drugs (ARVs), which in turn, will also hinder the efforts of eradicating the disease. Thus, to help with the fight against HIV/AIDS, there is still a need for people to be educated about the disease so they can support and be compassionate towards others around them. This year, the world’s attention is on COVID-19 pandemic. Everyone is reminded about how pandemics can affect many lives, from human rights violations and inequality to reduced economic growth. The theme for World AIDS Day this year is ‘Global solidarity, shared responsibility’, which means that it is the time to show bold leadership for equal societies, emphasise on the right to health for all, and have an egalitarian global recovery plan of pandemics for everyone’s safety. And although there have been advancements in treatment for HIV/AIDS, unfortunately, about 12.6 million people living with it do not have access to adequate treatment. Just like COVID-19, AIDS-related illnesses also hit the poorest and the most vulnerable the hardest, showing that inequalities cost lives.
If the treatment of HIV has made progress, why have not the perceptions about those infected changed? Recently, UNAIDS found that over 50% of people in 35% of countries with available data report having discriminatory behaviours towards those To follow the call of “global solidarity, shared resinfected with HIV. GOBE Needlepoint Art
INTERVIEW B
Gobelin tapestries originated in the 15th century in Paris, at the initiative of a family of cloth makers and dyers. In the 17th century, Manufacture des Gobelins were already the suppliers of the royal house of King Louis XIV, due to the carpets they produced, that were of a remarkable quality and beauty. Famous paintings or other original illustrations by artists such as Watteau, Boucher, Raffaeli or Monet (and others) were soon transposed on the tapestries. From then till now, the tradition has been transmitted through other small workshops around the world, some of which can be found in Romania. Nowadays, one may be inclined to think that gobelin tapestries can only be admired in an art gallery or inside a museum. This is not the case: art is born in the hands of sewing enthusiasts and is no longer just an aristocratic pursuit or privileged possession, but a modern hobby - and my mother Gabriela proves it. I invite you to uncover her private universe of needlepoint art, stitched into words and images.

Why do you love what you do? The result and the process of getting closer to powerful and eternal works of art are two major reasons. Also, the fact that I can create a work of art with my own hands: a personal art piece crafted with just a needle and thread. Do you remember what your first Gobelin was? I do, yes. I worked on my first Gobelin in 1993. It was a small dimensions piece called “Children and Bunnies” (unknown painter). Can you tell us about the process of sewing a Gobelin? What does it involve, from beginning to end? A tapestry kit contains a diagram, thread, sometimes even a needle and a canvas. You will need a frame, on which the canvas will be
placed. The canvas must be well stretched, otherwise, the image might get distorted. The kit comes either with a diagram (a sewing “map”, that shows you where on the canvas to stitch using the given coded colours) or with a printed canvas (the image is printed on the canvas and you simply stitch over it). I find that properly identifying colours is more difficult in the case of a printed canvas, so I go for the ones that come with a diagram. Each colour is placed on a card and it is assigned a code. These exact codes are placed on the diagram to indicate where to stitch using a certain colour. The diagrams are numbered. I do not recommend fully completing the diagrams in the order in which they come, because there will be demarcation lines showing up on the canvas after stitching. It is best if you alternate stitching and only work on small sections, moving from one diagram to another. You must follow the same direction when sewing, from right to left. You may

start sewing from virtually anywhere (the top/middle/ bottom of the canvas, any place at random) and with any colour. It would be preferable to start with the darker colours and move on to the lighter ones at the end. On average, how much time does it take to complete a Gobelin? The process can last from a few months to a year. The time of completion is determined by the complexity and size of the image, the number of colours, the available time a person has, their skill and sewing speed. What is it that has you so drawn to it? First, the disconnection from everyday life and its stress-relieving magic. It is a real form of therapy. Focusing on it transports me to a state of peace and relaxation. Physically, it does put some strain on your muscles, because of the position that must be maintained when sewing, but this aspect fades into the background. It is addictive:
once you get into sewing, you will want to do it all the time. What is the hardest part about sewing a Gobelin? The face grabs the visual attention first, therefore a much higher degree of concentration is needed when working on portraits, even if the number of colours is not very large, to ensure a smooth colour transition. One can easily make mistakes and, for example, grab the wrong
colour or stitch the right colour onto the wrong section - it’s part of the experience. I must add that, in general, stitching a Gobelin presupposes an inherent degree of difficulty and requires full concentration. Do you have a favourite painting or a painter? The Little Beggar, by Bartolome Esteban Murillo. I love almost all his paintings. Nicolae Grigorescu comes right next to him. I cannot choose between the two. What theme speaks the most to your heart and why?
I am drawn to the representations of children, mothers with their children - the theme of family, impactful, emotional paintings, which arouse certain emotions and are pervaded by nostalgia. How many do you currently have in your collection? I have about 50 Gobelins displayed in the house and ten others that are waiting to be framed. How many have you sewed in total?
About 80 - perhaps even more. 22 of them I offered as a gift. I still have most of them in my collection, because I have sewn them twice. Have you ever considered selling them? Yes, the idea of selling them crossed my mind, but I do not think that they are quoted at their real price. Currently, as far as I know, a square centimetre is being sold for around 0.50 euros in Romania. However, I have never worked on a Gobelin with the idea of selling it. tion into something, it’s hard to part ways with it. If I do it, I prefer to turn it into a gift. What reactions/responses have you had to your Gobelins? The most common reaction consists of general appreciation, admiration and curiosity, but there’s also an immediate distancing, as most people deem the process much too laborious.
Do you engage in other creative endeavours? I am passionate about gardening, I love flowers and I have a garden that is constantly expanding. I have gathered dozens of species of plants. My children tell me that I have turned our house into a greenhouse. I make up for their ‘complaints’ with desserts. Cliché or not, I like jewellery and I put together various models of bracelets and rings made out of beads, in all kinds of shapes, based on abstract or floral motifs (a large part of them has been added to my daughter’s jewellery collection).

DOCTOR’S KITCHEN Hungarian Stuffed Peppers ANJANI KUMAR
The bell pepper has been an excellent vessel for stuffing meat, rice, and of course, cheese. It’s strong enough to hold its shape in the oven, and the flavour is subtle enough to go well with just about anything. Almost every country in the world have their version of stuffed bell pepper recipe and they all are very delicious. Hungarian Stuffed Peppers (töltött paprika) are one of those delicious, easy to make and full of flavour recipe. It’s an Eastern European favourite, and reminds me a bit of Stuffed Cabbage Rolls, except using cabbage, it’s made with Paprika Peppers. Of course, It definitely wouldn’t be Hungarian without the ever-present, but optional, garnish of sour cream. Instructions Cut the tops off of the peppers and remove the seeds and white membrane. Season cavities lightly with salt and pepper. In a medium saucepan, add 2 tablespoons of oil and fry the onions for about 3 minutes. Add the garlic and fry for another minute. When the onions are caramelized and starting to brown, remove from heat. In a large bowl, add the ground meat, egg, fried onions and garlic, parboiled rice, paprika powder, chopped parsley, salt and pepper. Using your hands, mix all the ingredients together until evenly mixed. Stuff peppers lightly with meat mixture because the rice will expand. If you have any leftover meat filling, form it into meatballs. Place stuffed peppers, smoked sausages and any meatballs in a small slow cooker or in a big pot. Mix tomato pastes with tomato juice and sugar and pours over peppers. Add bay leaves and black peppercorns. Cover it with a lid and cook on low flame for 1-2 hours. This also can be cooked in a 180°C or 350°F oven for 1-2 hours. Serve peppers with a dollop of sour cream, if desired, and crusty white or rye bread.

SUDA HAYAT BULAN RENKLER: EBRU SANATI PHD. ZEYNEP KEMALOĞLU
E
Türk Tarihinde adı bilinen en eski ebrucu 1608 tarihli “Tertîb-i Risale-i Ebri” adlı yazma eserin yazarı Şebek’tir.

Ateşkes ayrıca Laçin bölgesinde halen Ermenilerin kontrolü altında bulunan toprakların 1 Aralık’a kadar Azerbaycan’a iade edilmesini talep ediyor.
