he second half of the year took a turn for the worst as humanity came face to face with a virus far more threatening than the Covid-19. Racism, the killer of the soul, it takes away shame, guilt and leaves you in bitter hatred. The cure is compassion, getting off the high horse and educating oneself. We witnessed a revolution following the

killing of George Floyd, the police officer responsible was charged with second-degree murder in response to the outrage. The streets have seen the biggest crowds since the lockdown, the wave of inspiration and support originated in the USA and made its way to the UK. Many brave women and men have asked us to stand with them on the road to justice. Statues of slave traders and those in the association have been taken down and other memorials are being reconsidered too. The youth are taking the torch and leading us into a world of peace and equality. Our July issue is a beam of light to those fascinating over the possibility of other lifeforms existing in space. Those who wear the tinfoil hat can proudly contact their home planets and let them know we welcome the aliens with open arms. We have features that delve into the significance and appreciation of the universe, stars and area 51. The Art section now hosts a novel about the homeless people, a chapter will be included in the magazine each month. The first chapter introduces the protagonists of the story and shows an overview of the city though the eyes of the ‘stray cats.’ The USA and the UK have a lovehate relationship, we love to hate and hate to love each other. Wherever one might stand, we cannot deny the similarities that surround us. Take a look at the features in the Lifestyle section in honour of 4th of July. Enjoy your read and remember to leave people and places better than you have found them.

The Story In The Stars

DR. OSMAN KÖMÜRCÜ W R I T E R & E D I TO R A S S I S TA N T

Many unexplained events occur on our planet which makes us realise we do not know many things. Even as we look at ancient Egypt, which homes the famous Pyramids, contains many secrets and mysteries that stand before our eyes. Sumerians, Mayans, Aztecs, Atlantis continent, Mu (lost) continent, Dogons, Hopis and many ancient civilizations that we cannot count here have different characteristics. All of them contain many secrets in themselves. In the world that has hosted such mysterious civilizations, we begin to ask what happened in the past and most importantly, who did our world host? This situation reveals the theories that blow our minds. Many theorists have come up with countless ideas as to the reasons behind these events, and of course, their accuracy is questioned. Nowadays, many things are written and taught about Ancient Egypt. Like their lives, cultures, clothing, beliefs, roots and architectural structures. Even today, the pyramids, which are discussed whether they are man-made, there are two major theories when looking at the history of Egypt. One theory is that the

residents of Atlantis brought the documents containing all their accumulated intelligence to Egypt before their continent sank. These records are thought to be in hidden compartments under the work known as Sphinx today. In short, it signifies the Egyptians are the continuation of the Atlanteans. Another theory is that Anunakis, who came to our world from the 12th planet and intervened by finding a certain time in our world, had removed gold from the world to solve the problem occurring in the atmosphere of their planets, and it is said even the gods such as Ra and Osiris were Anunaks. These two theories put forward are indirectly associated with extraterrestrial life. Did ancient Egypt have any contact with extraterrestrial beings? Let’s take a look at the studies and researches made so far. Whenever we look at Ancient Egypt, we encounter a mystery and riddle. But when it comes to pyramids, the job gets a little more complicated. If we consider as per the theory that Ancient Egypt is related to extraterrestrial beings, it is the pyramids that we must look at first. NEWS MAGAZINE

We come across coincidences many times in our lives. But the similarity of the pyramids with the Orion star system is far beyond coincidence. Due to the Orion constellation size and location, it can be seen with the naked eye from both the northern and southern hemispheres between November and January. The image of the Orion constellation, called the hunter constellation, is reminiscent of a crouching hunter who has put the index on the ground. It has attracted the attention of many civilizations from ancient times to the present day and caused them to research it. As a result of the researches, it was understood that there was a team star consisting of seven stars. The shoulders of the hunter, in which the Orion constellation is compared, form Betel Gause and Bel Latrix. The skirt of the hunter is ‘Saib and Rigel’. The dagger standing in the belt of the hunter is the Orion Nebula. Also, the ‘Orion’ constellation is compared to the

spider motif, which is one of the many drawings that are thought to be made by extraterrestrials in the Naska desert in South America. It is believed that these drawings in our world were made by beings who came to our world in ancient times wanting to tell us something. Orion constellation also has a connection with the pyramids in Egypt. It is observed that it is much more than a coincidence. The Giza pyramids in Egypt are thought to have been built in 2500 BC. It is known that the construction of the ‘Giza’ pyramids, which took 15-20 years, took 80 years in total. However, when we look at the pyramids, almost all of us spot a certain detail. For example, why were the ‘mikelinos’ pyramid and other small pyramids built next to these wonders of the world? Frankly, besides such magnificent pyramids, what do small unpretentious pyramids do? Why are the Pyramids of Mikerinos slightly on the left,

although the Pyramids of Keops and Kefran are built at the diagonal of each other? Here is a mathematical calculation. A process in which the same space technology is developed is necessary for the Egyptian pyramids and for us to understand the mathematical knowledge it contains. One day, while researcher Robert Bauval watches the night sky, he imagines that the three stars in the constellation of Orion resemble the arrangement of the pyramids. When he compares the Orion constellation with the image, which is related to the arrangement of the pyramids, he sees the big picture. As a result of his research, when he removed the angle of the pyramids thought to have been built in 2500 BC, he sees that the angle in the constellation of Orion coincides exactly with that angle. The fact that these stars are literally at the same level as the Egyptian pyramids have a connection with time. Looking at the history of the constellation of Orion with the help of historical program software, it is seen that the perfect match is based on 10,500 years before Christ. As a result of this information, the theory has been put forward that the pyramids in Egypt were made by lifeforms, and not by the Egyptians. There are four vents in the pyramids. Two of these ventilation are connected to the tomb of the king. The other two are connected with the queen’s room. One of the vents connected to the tomb of the king is divided into north and the south-facing parts. The southern vent shows the constellation of Orion, and the northern vent shows the NEWS MAGAZINE

northern star. According to the belief of Ancient Egypt, the spirits of the dead, for example, pharaohs goes out of these ventilation holes to reach the stars and settle there. The chance that such coincidences coexist is very surprising. Could these works be built by the beings that came to our world in ancient times and wanted to tell us something? The number of people who believe in such stories is not in a minority. Of course, more people do not believe in this situation. However, are stories about Ancient Egypt just about them? It is believed that the traces of extraterrestrial beings are found in many works in Egypt. The fact that the recording room, which is one of the oldest parts of Egypt, is still undiscovered may also indicate that there is much more to discover. There are traces and objects from ancient Egypt that remind us that extraterrestrial beings exist. If we look at these objects, respectively, as a result of the researches made, the drawings that were noticed after examining the writings on the northern wall of the King Fatat Hope, who lived between 1300 and 1700, and reigned here, are very interesting. On these tablets, there are drawings called Gray’s that resemble extraterrestrial beings were encountered. And again, in many historical artefacts found, we come across pictures of these beings. We will certainly protect the mystery of these historical artefacts found in different time zones in this geography and we will hear such speculative news in the future.

cientific research and experimentation have theorised much about outer space. Yet, there is, even more, to be discovered about the mysteriously infinite womb that houses our planet. While we ponder what might be out there, we are still to have uncovered a significant percentage of our earth. Our universally shared home where life and objects are hidden away like a secret. The Bermuda triangle swallows the ocean like a black hole in

space vacuums the void. The infamous Malaysian Airlines flight 370 remains missing without a trace, along with the 239 people who were on board. Such tragic events make one realise our planet alone is often a mysterious void. Getting lost in all that cannot be found, and understanding the variables at hand, it is easier to verify the missing equations of our totality.

physicists have been to space, nonetheless, their theories and studies entail the finest details. Seemingly, back in the 16thcentury outer space was rather an unknown subject. There was a prominent illusion that everything evolved around the earth and we were at the centre of it all. A quote from one of Shakespeare’s script Troilus and Cressida indicates the theory of the time, “The heavens The great English writer William themselves, the planets, and Shakespeare was conspired to this centre.” His later works have had a ghostwriter as he mark modern concepts such had never been to the places he as the metaphor of the moon had written about in his plays. chasing the earth. realistically we cannot get a ‘grow your universe kit’ and attempt it, although that would simultaneously be spectacular and disastrous. Considering we are yet to discover the depths of our psychology, how it would be an impossible mission to be in charge of a universe. Professedly humans are not a qualified candidate to take this god-like position. The need to know why the universe exists is not much of a concern to many, albeit even if an explanation was introduced by science, it would essentially be as if naming gravity. The most popular one being a green extraterritorial with a tremendous American accent. Either way, beside conspiracy theories, there is not a single calculable unit to support this idea. From familiarizing ourselves with our home planet to acknowledging most of what we know now can be disproved, we have hope that our questions will surely land on answers. Researching the possibilities, expanding our minds and questioning our existence is all part of the curiosity that pursued space. Upon finding the gateway to the endless stretch for the starry-eyed wanderers, the need for connection and communication with new forms of life awakens. Assuming that one day the reason for the start of the universe is proved along with the existence of aliens, our current literature that contains these details may hold a historical significance of the age of oblivion. Having learned from our mistakes, the term ‘theory’ has come in handy in situations where an idea is too good to be dismissed without proof but too wild to ever assess. The theory has saved us from a future humbling.

BAD AURA

A cat is a lion in a jungle of small bushes A Novel, Exclusive to The Hall News Magazine by Esra Kanbur

CHAPTER ONE Smokes of pollution hover over London like spirits patrolling. Beneath the cloud lays River Thames which cuts through the city, dividing it in two. The natural divide is noticeable and faultless in the role it plays; to stand as a metaphor for the partition between the prosperous and the deprived. The North East explicitly sizzles with sins from dusk till dawn whereas the Southside inadvertently rests in peace from all the saintly secrets buried. In between the two halves; position many attempts to connect both sides, the bridges are olive branches offered in unison and harmony. To cross over is effortless and in need of no talent, however, to stay and belong is strenuous and in some cases submissively hazardous. Myths are told about the opposite poles of the city but neither side would believe in them. People pass over every day; though they fail to notice the streets that house the destitute who are insolvent no matter which side of the spectrum they rest their heads on for the night. Zooming down into an alleyway; tourists are promised to find a dark corner hosting a breather of a parasite. She discounts them just like they do to her; thanking one another unknowingly for taking part in one another’s’ lives for a split millisecond. The parasitic-being licks her paw with her dry sand-like tongue and rubs her face cleaning around her round eyes, button nose, bony cheeks and crispy lips. She pulls her blade away, sick of her reflection. Every day the same old face- every day the same old body; this parasite is bored and is in search of a lively quest and a new identity. Her ears burn; it’s time for the day patrol. Her two loyal friends join her and they run loose on the streets of Southwark during rush hour. Students are on their lunch break wandering obliviously and the money-making people disregard them out of habit as they walk through their territory. ‘Watch it!’ Texas hisses at one of them as they bump into her. Regardless, no one takes any notice and they pretend they don’t exist. They close an eye to the cats. ‘This one,’ she says to her two friends as she spots a mouse to play with. He is leaning against his car with the door open. He is wearing a suit and he squeaks into his phone. They approach him; the youngest of the three, Kat, pulls herself under the car and the insecure one, named Imogene peers around the corner and keeps watch. The man takes no notice, just like the rest of them; he too ignores. ‘What time is it?’ Texas asks him, her voice always sounding like she has a flu; shuttered and blocked. He stops speaking and looks at his watch. ‘Almost noon.’ ‘That’s a nice watch you got there,’ she eyes it up. ‘I had a watch just like that once.’ ‘Yeah?’ he says looking at her for the first time; standing before him is a petite girl who looks no more than ten years of age- but the deep dark rings around her eyes give her awayshe is a cross between a Chucky doll and a little lion. ‘Where,

in your dream?’ he laughs and shakes his head dismissing her. Typical. She steps towards him; the man switches from being smug to unlucky in a split second; he gets in his car and immediately locks the doors. ‘Go away!’ he says to her. ‘Before I call the police on you, cats!’ He is one of them. He calls them cats; he has that look in his eyes, the one all the other mice get when they are about to get pinched out of the hole in the wall. And taken out of their comfort zones and exposed to the reality of the wall they live in that divides two worlds of the same planet. Nobody likes to cross the line. Kat giggles from under the car; without an ounce of worry that the mouse might panic and drive off, crushing her skull. She takes a nail out from her pocket and digs it into the car tyre, the air is slowly released and the tyre begins to flatten. Soon the car becomes unbalanced, leaning slightly towards one side like a circus tent. The mouse in the car begins to dial the police. ‘I warned you!’ he shouts from inside. Imogene peering around the corner raises her hand and signals for them to leave. The dogs are coming. Texas moves to the front of the car and memorises the plate number. They gather around and bring up their hoods to disclose their faces. They run. They know the streets like the back of their hands. Bankside bites their dust as they make their way towards Borough Market. The Shard is their Compass, their moon and their sun; they will never be apart when they look to the pointy skyscraper. Texas mugs a few people along the way as they get back to their private headquarters; the skip within an idle construction site that has been on hold for two years and counting. They jump in and she reveals her gems. ‘We’re lucky today,’ she announces. ‘Two wallets and a phone!’ Dogs begin to bark cunningly and the cats gradually build up their courage and peak up from the skip. They have their claws at the ready, and with unblinking eyes, they watch as the dogs scan the street behind the tall protective gates. The cats cross their fingers in hope that they dismiss the broken bars of the gate used as an entry. The dogs check all around until they are satisfied and then they take out their empty coffee cups from their police car and throw them out. ‘Come on.’ The police call out to his puppies and they leave. When the police car is out of sight, Texas jumps out of the skip and lands on all fours. She runs to the coffee cups and presses her finger and scrapes around the inside to make sure she hasn’t missed anything. ‘Not even a drop!’ She shouts with anger and throws it; it lands in the bin. ‘Wouldn’t have gone in if I’d aimed for it...’ She shakes her head with foul disappointment at the slow progression of her unadventurous life. She grabs on to the edge of the skip tactfully and pulls her feather-light body up with one tow. The other two have already started taking selfies on the mobile phone.

What does he want her to do about it, use moisturiser? Before Texas goes to show off her new tattoo she must get dinner, she has her eyes on three takeaway shops. It will be risky this time as she stole food from each of them several times. They won’t fall for her tricks again any time soon. Fortunately, a new fast food shop is opening up across the street. Just as she is about to run across with her fast legs she spots unfinished business. Bonnie and Clyde make an entrance in her psychotic head. They were gone for weeks; she thought they had left her for good. Sometimes their voices merged into one and they become a little bit bearable with one constant tone and direct opinion. But when they split into two halves, they pulled her into all sorts of directions. They were her friends when she had none, they told her things like how to survive and sometimes how to die.

Selling the phone was as easy as a stroll in the park; the first man who stands the corner, Poison bought it off her for fifty and threw in a free coupon for a tattoo. He looks no more than fourteen but the artist doesn’t seem too bothered about it. Fake IDs are easy to get your hands on if you know all the right people. ‘I want a tattoo, I have a coupon.’ She says, holding it up to his face. ‘Okay, in a minute.’ He places a bandage over the boy’s leg and sends him off charging him a hundred and fifty pounds. They take a rest at the bus shelter; an old woman with her shopping trolley stands up and moves away when she sees the cats coming. She knows of their kind. He lost his key or something,’ she lies. ‘Did he forget his code as well?’ He points. ‘See, it has a code right here.’ ‘Yeah, yeah he has Alzheimer, just get on with it.’ She says dropping her body on to a tiny stool by the wall; her knees are squeezed between the stool and the counter. The other two do the same; they are her shadows, copying her movements. They all spread out as much as possible and make themselves at home. The old man seems uneasy, flicking his eyes at them every other second. ‘Okay, it will cost you ten pounds. Let me just go inside and get my kit.’ He says and she waves him off dismissively.

all day long, she measures how fast the car rolls down the hill opposed to her running. Cars fascinated her; they stood as a solid oxymoron- hazardous but essential. Just like her- but the latter she wasn’t too sure of. ‘You three, how many times do I need to tell you? Stay out of trouble!’ The police behind the wheel tell them. ‘Look I’m not going to be around anymore so I can’t protect you.’ ‘Why, where ya goin’ Marley?’ She asks leaning forward; placing her cuffed hands over the empty headrest in front of her. The only police in the world to let them off the hook; without even a slap on the wrist. He has been saving their backsides for years; he was a Godfather in time of need, but like any father, he would soon leave. ‘I’m moving back to Kent, my wife gave birth last week.’ ‘Oh, Congratulations!’ ‘Yeah, thanks. We just don’t want our baby girl to grow up in a claustrophobic rotten Smoke.’ They arrive at the station and Marley pretends to hustle them inside and makes them sit down in front of the head police officer. ‘Sir, they stole this briefcase.’ Marley informs him. ‘OK, I know that already. Get out.’ The quizmaster officer takes the briefcase heatedly and sends him away with a quick brush of a hand. ‘Why would ya just assume that we stole it?’ Texas says picking her feet up and placing it on the coffee table full of cigarette ashes. ‘Can’t I own a procession?’ ‘Let’s say it’s yours, but I bet you weren’t going to pay for the service charges for the locksmith? Do you have any money on you? I didn’t think so, and I bet it was you alone not these two. Poor things look at them, you all stink of garbage!’ He insults them. ‘And take your feet off my table.’ He orders. ‘Texas, Imogene, Kat.’ He calls out their names. ‘No surname, of course, you breed of cats. You should have name tags.’ He shakes his head as he makes a few notes. ‘We’re not domestic.’ Texas comments. ‘Texas you’re going to stay in for a night and we’ll see if you can have a change of mind about wasting valuable police time, you know we don’t just work for you alone. There are worse crimes out there, terrorism, drugs, murder...’ ‘Racism?’ she says nodding towards the door, reminding him how he treats Marley. ‘I’m not leavin’ ‘em, they’ll starve without me.’ They don’t know the feeling of hunger, none of them does. ‘Really, they will die in one night? And how many times did I tell you to go to the homeless shelter; do you want me to get the social service to trouble you again?’ He threatens them but leans back lazily. The phone rings and he answers. He looks at the briefcase and confirms the appearance. He laughs and presses his knuckles on the table. ‘Looks like you won yourself Bonnie: He went inside; he gonna rat on y’all! a week in here; you assaulted a partner at The Shard and guess Clyde: You’re so stupid, why didn’t you just get the food… what? Clyde: She doesn’t! Oh, wait he’s comin’ back. The officer rolls his eyes and sends Imogene and Kat away as the others take Texas behind bars. Art Intertwined

One of the very interesting aspects regarding the manifestations of culture lies in the communication and the correspondence between two different expressions of art. As well as the dynamics in the inspiration which one artistic form triggers another.

T

herefore, we can see numerous examples of folklore themes transposed into works of literature, and consequently into paintings, dance, music and cinema. A rare, but increasingly frequent phenomenon triggered by modern times witnesses the gigantic field of cinematography serving as inspiration and more conventionally “classical” forms of art.

Alexandre Dumas’ novel La Dame aux Camélias illustrates the more conventional phenomenon and it is perhaps the most predictable as it is not only familiar to opera enthusiasts. After being adapted into a theatrical version, it has served as a source of inspiration for Giuseppe Verdi’s monumental opera La Traviata. Merely one year after its theatrical premiere which took place in February NEWS MAGAZINE

1852 in Paris, it was attended by Verdi himself. Several decades later, it was adapted for motion pictures with the first movie Camille, released in 1915 as a collaboration between screenwriter Frances Marion and director Albert Capellani. Followed by an important number of adaptations seeing Sarah Bernhardt, Maria Felix, Greta Garbo and Isabelle Huppert in the main role, to

name just a few. As an extension of the work, the composer joined forces with librettist Francesco Maria Piave, with whom he had been collaborating for nearly a decade in order to create works such as Ernani, Macbeth, Il Corsaro, as well as Rigoletto, Simon Boccanegra and La Forza del Destino, pillars of the operatic repertoire. Piave wrote the libretto in November 1852 and Verdi started composing the music shortly after, in January 1853. La Traviata was presented to the audience in 1853 at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice and it was greeted negatively on its first performance (presumably due to a questionable cast), but a year later received its welldeserved success on the same stage. Its enduring global impact is undeniable, La Traviata having the largest number of performances in recent seasons. Remember the strangely emotional, yet undeniably gruesome Body Horror movie starring an eccentric Jeff Goldblum as a gradually deteriorating human-fly creature and a charming Geena Davis as his romantic interest? In fact, the aforementioned version and perhaps the one which had more mass media exposure is actually a remake of the 1958 film The Fly, which, in turn, was inspired by George Langelaan’s short story with the same name. The direction that this title followed was a more unusual

one, starting out as a piece of literature, subsequently being adapted into a movie and finally serving as a plot for an opera in two acts composed by Howard Shore and premiered in 2008 at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. In spite of the unique sequence of events, the execution of the operatic work followed quite a logical system: David Henry Hwang wrote the indispensable libretto, Howard Shore composed the music, just the way he had also done the soundtrack of the 1986 remake (even though the two scores are musically unrelated), David Cronenberg directed both productions and naturally, the composer and the stage director had a tight collaboration in the making of the final, to-be-staged product. The opera was first performed

in Paris under the baton of Plácido Domingo and replicated in Los Angeles and later in Trier, Germany; the leading part of Seth Brundle (“the Brundlefly”) was performed by bass-baritones Daniel Okulitch and Laurent Alvaro respectively, while Veronica Quaife’s character was brought to life by mezzo-soprano Ruxandra Donose. There is an increasing fluctuation in art, given these times when the amplitude of artistic expression, desire for experiment and to shape-shift have expanded considerably and continue to do so. The human mind has always been a curious and inventive one; now it has added an increasing range of practical resources which the possibilities are almost endless.

psychological issues more than a physical one. This is the main difference between an overeater and a binge eater, the overeater has a level of control; they most likely will not be triggered with a bite of toast. eing a journalist in many countries remains a high risk as there are increasing hostility and hatred towards media professionals. In most regions of Africa, there is no press freedom as journalists cannot speak and write freely. The consequences are being beaten, jailed or killed for their work. The Middle East and North Africa are still considered to be the most dangerous regions in the world for journalists. As a result of such antagonism, many media professionals leave their countries of origin and try to practice their profession elsewhere. This year, the nongovernmental organisation called Reporters Without Borders found in its 2020 World Press Freedom Index that press freedom is a chaotic problem in most African countries. Although some African countries try to improve the ranking score,

the average score of the continent has not changed because of the deteriorating situation in other countries. In the Index, there were two biggest falls in 2020, and these were in Africa – by Comoros and Benin – and both countries have been experiencing press freedom violations for a long time. This year, some of the best performers of press freedom in Africa are Namibia, Cape Verde, Ghana and South Africa. Some of the reasons press freedom is a huge problem in Africa is because of bad governance, undemocratic states, and rise and fall of authoritarian regimes. There is a positive correlation between the suppression of media freedom and dictatorships, as these types of governments try to surpass criticism and transparency, and they can influence the information that is released. For instance, Sudan ranked the biggest increase in Africa by the 2020 Index edition, after months of protests and civil uprisings that removed Omar al-Bashir’s from office, who served as a president for nearly 30 years. COVID-19 can impact the media space in the next decade, by highlighting many of the crises around communication of news and report of independent and reliable information. Many security officials are using force and violence to threaten media professionals; journalists across the continent testify being oppressed, having their voices shut, and their rights violated by armed forces as they try to report on COVID-19.

In addition to the existing fragile situation of increasingly repressive legislation and of lack of media freedom in African countries, COVID-19 has solely increased awareness of what has been happening for years. This global health crisis has changed the narrative on press freedom in Africa. It is a fact that the pandemic has increased the spread of disinformation and fake news quicker than the virus itself. Therefore, it is important to have control of the government to combat disinformation and cybercrime. However, many leaders are using this health crisis to implement repressive legislation against

This is a reminder about the global community about the threats that media professionals face around the world. Everyone should stand up, be a voice for journalists worldwide by campaigning on their behalf with the hope that countries will allow them to designate their job and be the society’s trusted professionals of the most needed reliable information. In most parts of the world, there is a high necessity for independent journalism which is free from political and commercial bias, and this is an important need to be achieved – which it must be achieved urgently.

A BEGINNING OF THE UK-USA RACE FOR POWER

T H E U S A I N D E P E N D E N C E D AY The History that shapes our world ooking at history we will always see a permanent L race of the states to control and influence other sta-

tes, regions, continents, and even the whole world - the superpower role. This race has always had different reasons behind: from the desire to be the leading nation of the world (the Germany of Hitler) to the desire of sustaining the world development and becoming the first country to make a real difference (the USA of Donald Trump). The end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century were mostly guided by the impact and influence of the USA, which is considered to be the superpower of our days. It had positive and negative influences on the world we have today. Among the positive influences, we find its participation in both World Wars and its sustainment for the formation of the EU. When Europe showed its inclination towards war because of its many states that longed for power and control of the whole continent, the USA came with the Marshall Plan. The US funding oriented the European states attention towards recovery after the war, peacekeeping, and concentration on common development and economic growth. In terms of negative impacts, we can mention the military interventions which did not necessarily establish democracy and peace in the Middle East, especially the Iraq war. All these influences draw our attention to the USA international activity. We observe that the USA’s relationship with France and Germany is very different from the relationship with the United Kingdom. When it comes to the UK, the USA has been reluctant to maintain a close relationship at a different level than the diplomatic one. The dialogue for the EU formation was held first with France and

Western Germany, and later mostly with Germany. Although the United Kingdom joined the Union, it was not the first country to discuss the EU’s future. Then we assist at the Brexit process, which is followed by a serious reexamination of the trade relationships between the USA and the UK. So, let’s look into history to understand the reasons behind today’s USA and UK decisions.

Everything began with the Independence Day.

The USA and the UK have a great history. Much of it can be traced back to the XVII century, during the British mass migrations to the US, and to the 18th -19th centuries when the independence and expansion wars took place. The Independence War is a big step towards shaping the USA-UK relations. Their relation has started with Great Britain’s colonisation of 13 regions of the Northern American continent. These colonies were mostly involved in the slave trade and represented an interest for Great Britain because of the cotton, and the faithful trade relations: these colonies were forced to trade only with Britain and no other European powers. Britain considered itself as a liberator of the US citizens, especially after the French

gest naval force at the time. Despite its naval powers, Britain was defeated by the US colonies’ grace to the France and Spain that wore their own sea war in Europe with Britain. The war lasted between 1775-1783. At this moment, we would have expected Britain to withdraw from America and focus on its own businesses. Contrary to the expectations, in 1812 another war began between the USA and the UK because of the British restrictions on the US trade. This war, won by the US, has spread even more the independence idea and its celebration. The USA success has been used as a basis for further expansion, which Great Britain did not like. For this reason, the UK kept and the Indian Wars, after which it colonised French Louisiana during 1754-1763. Everything seemed to be alright until the British crown considered that the colonies were in debt to the crown for the French and Indian War and established a series of taxes for the colonies at the Stamp Act 1765 and the Tea Act 1773. The taxes outraged the locals, especially the Massachusetts colony, which was seen by King George III as disloyal. In this direction, the commander of all British troops in North America, Thomas Gage, decided to take preventive action and to suppress the warlike preparations of the locals by a surprising battle in 1774. But the unexpected happened when the locals mobilised so fast and assaulted the William and Mary Fort, where the local British troops kept their reserves of weapons. This battle was followed by others at Lexington, Concord, Bunker Hill, York Town, and the sea battles. At the basis of the independence idea was the king and the parliament’s unjust treatment and Britain rules. In the beginning, only a few colonies were engaged in the Independence War, which were considered radical. The idea was spread in other colonies’ grace to Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense” pamphlet from the beginning of 1776. A few months later, the motion of independence was introduced by Richard Lee, and the formal statement on the colonies’ independence was made by the committee of five: T. Jefferson, J. Adams, R. Sherman, B. Franklin, and R.B. Livingston. The Declaration was finally adopted on the 4th of July, 1776. A significant contribution to winning the US Independence War is due to the European states which were interested in weakening Great Britain. As a result, in the late 1770s, France and Spain joined the war in the USA. The Netherlands sustained the US through official recognition of the USA and financial support while waging its own war against Britain. Great Britain expected to win the war, especially the sea one, because of its trust of being the lar-

confronting the US in different wars and battles like the conflict on Nicaragua Canal, The American Civil War, the Venezuela and Alaska border disputes, etc. The USA’s independence represented a great loss for the British Empire, which stimulated a decrease of British influence in many other regions, especially India. As time passed, the multiple wars Great Britain was involved in weakened it as a superpower. Its weaknesses raised new opportunities for the USA’s strengths, which resulted in the USA gradually becoming a naval power and controlling most of the world waters and becoming a military and economic power. All of that to the detriment of the UK, which as an ex-superpower of many centuries, was dethroned by the USA and its allies. In the end, the history of the UK and the USA share influences their current political positions, relations, and ‘closeness.’ Even if the diplomacy highlights good relations between the two powers, the UK loss of power to the USA, and the USA long-running war for liberation will always be a shadow rationale behind every international decision. Even the Brexit can be seen through the nostalgic lenses of the UK desire for more power and influence in the world.

On the night of 10th of

May 1941, as a result of a serious raid, London was losing its House of Commons to the enemy’s bombs. Amid the critical circumstances of a tearing city, Winston Churchill’s famous quote was being born: “We shape our buildings and afterwards the buildings shape us”. Considering the importance of what was then the symbol of power in Great Britain to the nation’s morale, Churchill managed to define the scope of architecture in its purest form: more than building cities, the architect shapes societies. While the quotation above has embraced international notoriety ever since, there is another section of the speech that I find striking, nonetheless revealing to our current times. When deciding upon the new architectural configuration of the building, Churchill’s stance was clearly stated and well-argued; he dismissed the idea of a modern semi-circular shape, gradually adopted by other countries, and instead decided to bring back the oblong shape, specific to

the British governmental structure. Having decided on these matters, he concluded: “Logic is a poor guide compared to custom”. What leads the story above to finding a common ground with our current times lies in the exact opposite of custom, in the seeds that both wartime and pandemic time disseminate in our lives: uncertainty. Back in 2007, when

writing about the implications of what he called ‘negative globalization’, the Polish-born British sociologist and philosopher Zygmunt Bauman was expressing his concern about the effects that the newly configured economic system was about to have on people’s mental health. According to him, the problem comes from the fact that the owners of Capital are no longer visible and stable, having the power to shift from one local investment to another, in search for the most profitable market. As the profit of the elites increases, so does the experience of anxiety,

fear, and suspicion within the rest of us, who are ‘doomed to be local’, therefore struggle with living in an uncertain world over which we have no control. The author uses an illustrative metaphor inside the title of his work, “Liquid Times: Living in an Age of Uncertainty”, as the fluidity involved calls for both the issue and the remedy: the only way to control a liquid is by putting up barriers. However effective in appearance, these ‘barrier strategies’ can easily lead to the emergence of a fortress-like Europe designed to keep ‘the other’ out, thus encouraging zero-tolerance policies. While this risk was observed by Zygmunt Bauman inside the uncertain economic context of the globalized world, where people are tempted to defend their local well being by banning ‘the other’ from the market, the same dynamic can be noticed nowadays, yet mag-

nified, in a pandemic world where the isolation from ‘the other’ means the conservation of one’s health. The temptation to blame ‘the other’ has reached its peak. By the time the world was getting used to the quarantine, at the beginning of the pandemic, a collective of professors and students from the TU Delft Faculty of Architecture was already proposing an alternative to the ‘barrier strategies’, with the hope for a better future society. The solution seems to echo Churchill’s words, 80 years from the moment they were spoken: custom. Considering ‘custom’ to act as a stabilizer, as a bridge between generations, therefore setting up a solid ground and a sense of identity for the generations to come, the team of architects launched a call for solutions, as part of collective research, called “The Intimate City. Dining

NEWS MAGAZINE

in the Urban”. The central theme of the contest, ‘dining in the urban’, was a simple pretext for the architects to draw attention to local customs, to eventually give birth to an architectural approach that takes the local dimension into account. The plethora of solutions submitted varies from the ordinary custom of picnicking, to the fantastic concept of the magic carpet, from the central common table, calling for people to bring their chairs, accompanied by their own stories, to the central oven, which becomes the main piece that unifies people around the same enjoyment of the local cuisine. However simple they might seem, these tiny gestures included into the process of redesigning the future world manage to make a difference by the way they transmit to the future societies the subtle message of the past generations. Establishing the continuity of what is nothing less than glimpses of humanity, makes it possible for the ‘liquid times’ to meet the island of tradition, where any tired boat can rest for a while.

World UFO Day Organization (WUFODO)’s vision is to position UFOs from “speculation” to “a part of daily life”, WUFODO has a team of Ambassadors dedicated to the dissemination of this day. Ambassadors are also responsible for sharing true information. Organization of celebration activities are supported by believers. There is a list of celebration activities such as gathering with themed parties announced on the WUFOD event map, watching sci-fi movies and wearing costumes. World Ufo Day has 3 types of participants: believers, non-believers and potential believers. For non- believers it is a kind of UFO 101 class where they can find the opportunity of asking their questions and discussing. During the workshops, there are open discussion sessions and knowledge sharing (books, videos, etc.) with proof that UFOs exist. Non-believers can find the encouragement of giving a try to imagine the impossible. Joining the “Welcome on Earth” party may lead non-believers to leave their

concerns, suspicions and maybe their anxiety for a moment and empathise with extraterrestrial lifeforms. For believers the most famous activity is gathering and sky-watching, inviting extra-terrestrials through mass meditation and telepathically; sending out the messages that welcome aliens on the earth. Mass meditation groups aiming to align all minds and hearts to the frequency of fact that they exist and welcomed by humans, therefore, it is necessary to reinforce the unseen network between all human beings. Collective consciousness which is a constellation of ideas, beliefs, and values that a great number of individuals is given in society share. All these celebratory activities such as meditating, discussing, and imagining are serving to reinforce this constellation. This is why it is important to gather a large number of people at once which are mentally focused. To give an idea, a similar telepathic message was sent by International Flying Saucer

We of IFSB wish to make contact with you. We are your friends and would like you to make an appearance here on EARTH. Your presence before us will be welcomed with the utmost friendship. Different than the World Contact Day WUFODO concentrates on the subject, not a specific message, in the end, they both have the same intention; welcoming the extra-terrestrials. human’s invitation, World UFO Day contributes a lot to live by leading humans to question, to open the field, to believe that in the outer space there may be other intelligent beings and remind us that we are not alone in the universe. In other words, it helps humans to unbox their thoughts. It unlocks hearts by reminding us to be kind and generous. Just think, you are organising welcome parties to make extra-terrestrials feel excepted even though you are not sure about their existence. This attitude is what brings a willingness to accept different versions of the universe. Relying on its mind and heart-opening characteristic this day truly deserves a mindful celebration.

The end of July is marked by an important holiday in the Muslim world. This time, we are talking about the Festival of sacrifice or the way in which Muslims around the world must share their wealth. Money is beloved by people, yet they are commanded to love Allah. They claim this love of Allah through faith itself, so Allah has made spending of one’s wealth an indicator of his or her love and a test of the trueness of their claim to love Him. For all things that are beloved to people are spent for the greatest thing that the heart loves. The Fest of Sacrifice (Aid al-Adha) represents the moment when God rewards Abraham with the sacrifice of an animal, for his gesture. Instead of having his son, Ishmael sacrificed God sends an animal and tells Abraham to sacrifice the animal. This Islamic story is similar to the biblical story of Abraham and Isaac. Let’s see both stories: Christianity point of view: Genesis 22 is related to the amazing story of how God

asked Abraham to take Isaac and sacrifice him as an offering. Abraham immediately obeys God and sets out for the place where Isaac is to sacrificed, Moriah, taking with him two servants. When they approach Moriah, Abraham says a surprising thing to the servants: “Stay here with the donkey. I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you” (Genesis 22:5). Islam point of view: Abraham kept having dreams that he was sacrificing his son Ismael. Ibrahim knew that this was a command from God and he told his son, as stated in the Quran “Oh! Son, I keep dreaming that I am slaughtering you”, Ismael replied, “ Father, do what you are ordered to do.” Abraham prepared to submit to the will of God and prepared to slaughter his son as an act of faith and obedience to God. During this preparation, Shaytaan (the Devil) tempted Ibrahim and his family by trying to dissuade them from carrying out NEWS MAGAZINE

God’s commandment, and Abraham drove Satan away by throwing pebbles at him. In commemoration of their rejection of Satan, stones are thrown at symbolic pillars Stoning of the Devil during Hajj rites. Acknowledging that Abraham was willing to sacrifice what is dear to him, God the almighty honoured both Abraham and Ismael. Jibreel (Gabriel) called Ibrahim “O’ Ibrahim, you have fulfilled the revelations.” and a Ram from heaven was offered by Jibreel to prophet Abraham to slaughter instead of Ismael. Muslims worldwide celebrate Eid al Adha to commemorate both the devotion of Ibrahim and the survival of Ismael. Traditionally, Muslims follow the footsteps of Prophet Abraham and they share one-third of the meat with the poor, one third with their neighbours and relatives, and keep the final third for the use of their of own family. There are only specific animals that can be sacrificed, and they can only be sacrificed within a specific time

if this action is to be considered as a form of worship. It has been stated that “sheep, goats, cattle, and camels are seen as being religiously permissible.” The time period when this action is permissible consists of the days of the Festival of Sacrifice. The Prophet ordered: “Sacrifice an animal. It is the tradition of your forefather Abraham.” (Bulug al-Maram, IV,1) Who sacrifices animals? Those who are free, not travelling, Muslim, and have wealth according to the set religious standards (who own enough property to have to pay the annual alms) are those who must perform this duty. Some scholars also state that being mature and of a sound mind are also preconditions for sacrificing an animal, and according to Imam Azam and Imam Abu Yusuf, those who find themselves and as guardians of those who do not fulfil these two conditions should sacrifice an animal in their name. The standards measuring whether or not one should sacrifice an animal are the same as those that measure whether or not one should pay the sadaqah al-Fitr. Like that of zakat, the wealth that constitutes the obligation to sacrifice an animal is based on trade goods or money earned; there is no condition that the amount has been possessed for a year or that it should have grown. potential. For this reason, those who were poor, but have suddenly come into money on the Eid days must sacrifice an animal. Those who were wealthy but have suddenly fallen on bad times are not required to do so. Animals of sacrifice The animals that are suitable for sacrifice are sheep

and goats (which are a year old, or seven to eight months, which is considered the same as having fulfilled one year of life), cattle (two years of age or more), oxen (two years of age or more), and camels (five years of age or more). A sheep or a goat can only be sacrificed in the name of one person. A camel or cow can be shared from between one to seven people. However, the partners must all be Muslim, they must all purchase equal shares of the animal, and they must sacrifice the animal in the name of God. An animal cannot be sacrificed if one or both eyes are blind if most of the teeth have fallen out if the ears have been cut if one or both horns have been broken off from the base, if more than half an ear or the tail is missing if it was born without ears or a tail, and so on. The Prophet said: “Eat from the sacrifice, donate it and collect it.” (Ibn Maja, Adahi, 2) From this hadith, we can understand that a Muslim should offer some of the meat to guests, donate some to the needy, and give the rest to the members of their family. The person who sacrifices an animal can donate it to a charity, use it in their house as a prayer mat, or sell it, giving the money to a charity. The person who has sacrificed an animal cannot sell the hide and spend the money themselves. It is traditional for the person who has sacrificed the animal to pray two units (rakats) to thank Almighty God, to pray to Him, and to plead with God to accept the sacrifice. The Glad Tidings of the Prophet If a Muslim sacrifices an animal insincerity, he or NEWS MAGAZINE

she sees the return multiplied on the Day of Judgment. The Prophet said the following on this matter: “There is no more beloved action than that of a person sacrificing an animal on the Day of sacrifice for God. That sacrifice will come with its horns, hide and hooves.” (al-Taj, III, 217) The Purpose of the Sacrifice Alongside those members of society who are wealthy or well-off are those who go for months without seeing meat, who wander around half-full, people with honour who do not make their position clear for all to see, people who live in hidden poverty. These people often refrain from asking for anything from anyone. It is for such people that the feast after the sacrifice has been established. It brightens their hearts and allows them a share in the welfare of society. The feast of the sacrifice helps to spread social justice and strengthens the ties of love. The above factors have beneficial effects from a social and economic view, in that they help the individual toward peace and happiness, and they help them to gain maturity. Sacrifice—through thanks, gratitude, forbearance, and sharing—nurtures both the individual and the society. As a conclusion – at which we should reflect more nowadays is: Give charity with a cheerful face, rejoicing in it, not finding it burdensome. As Prophet said, “…One dirham can outstrip a hundred.” (al-Nasa i) What is meant by this is that something that you give contentedly and wholeheartedly from the best of your wealth is better than to give a hundred thousand while considering it a burden to do so.

Kanada Günleri

Dil ve Teknoloji EFENDI YILMAZ

KEVIN PEACE

NEWS MAGAZINE

The Man, The Myth, The Meat

n ignorant person is a term roughly cut out for those who have not read, lack knowledge and have not been trained. In the time of Ignorance, the situation of mankind was ‘strengthening the weak’. Ignorance has come forward to be able to turn the situation into their favour and torment the poor who they have ambushed. From the beginning of the tribe forces, the first man in the world started the destruction of nature and living things. The strong man was throwing huge stones at the animal. He also ate the animal he was killed by throwing stones. It is understood that in the past, people have learned from what they have experienced. He carved the stone and sharpened it, and he fixed it from the tree branch. He made a tool to hunt. He burned two stones together and set fire on the spark he could remove. It warmed up in the cave, drew a line on the wall, made meaning by drawing pictures. There is a myth that suggests one day, the child acciden\tally drops a piece of meat in the fire. Her mother takes it from the

child’s hand and feeds it to him. Until then, they would not cook the meat, rather they had eaten raw. In another myth, the son of a man was struck by lightning in the dark and fell to the ground for fear of seeing what had struck him. Rejoiced at the birth of the sun. A sense of faith came from the creator. The expression of the ordinary people, their expression of religion and their contact with religion would later be updated with prayer. Centuries ago, in the Arab lands, the ignorant men were crushing their women by the throat, buried their heads in the ground, until they died. The girls born were also buried alive, in the ground. It is the ones who bring the ignorance in their period and set the dish for the galleries of those who do not know the experience.

The Foul Female Fix

According to statistics* there are currently sixty thousands girls at risk of female genital mutilation in the UK. Female circumcision is known as a rite of passage to womanhood.

C

ircumcision in Islam is a physical process that is first come across in childhood due to religious teachings. Circumcising girls goes back to two thousand five hundred years. This is the first time that this event originated from ancient Egypt. It was implemented in Eastern Turkey. The hurtful, drug-free bloody cut, continued in Africa. Circumcision applied to girls from infancy to the age of puberty is also valid for women who are not circumcised. Although Europe had long left the tradition of female circumcision, this practice is still alive in parts of Africa. This practice is still applied to males from infancy to the age of fifteen in Islam and Judaism. In Islam, the last prophet made an explanation about the subject by saying that the sunnah (traditional customs and practices) is ‘virtue’ for women. Thereon the model of displaying high moral standards for women and the removal of the foreskin for men was modelled. These customs are frequently referred to as ‘Medieval torment’ today. The benefits of male circumcision are known to be easier hygiene, decreased risk of infections, sexually transmitted diseased and regional cancer. However, there are no health benefits whatsoever of female

circumcision. It is an illegal act in the UK and considered child abuse. The long terms effects of this practice cause problem with childbirth and mental health. The number of this act is increased during summer holidays as girls are taken aboard to their country of origin to undergo this procedure. By communities and counties still carrying this out the reason that it is for the purification of girls as they perceive a clean woman is deemed as marriage worthy. Female genital mutilation is still a huge problem, although the United Nations have set a 2030 deadline to end this act, the pandemic has put more girls at risk of being subjected to it. Although constitutional illegal, Somalia has the world’s highest rate of FGM. It is estimated due to the gap in school closures, a quarter of a million girls will undergo the procedure this year. Young women are still being threatened of being cut and married off to a stranger by their families, this is a persistent reminder of how stubborn and self-righteous wrong beliefs can be. *For information on how to help visit: https://www. forwarduk.org.uk
