hile sitting on her bed, Thandi looked outside the window. She gazed at the garden. She could see the sun shining in her room. She saw a man walk his dog. There was something strange about this man. He wore a skirt. So she opened her window and shouted to the man:

“Good morning Sir” He stopped and started to look around. His dog immediately barked at Thandi. The man finally saw her and greeted back. “Hello, young lady”, he replied. “What are you up to?”, he asked. He had such a friendly face. Thandi wanted to ask him why he was wearing a skirt. “Sir”, she started. “Why are you wearing a skirt?”

“Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha...” He could not stop laughing. When he did, he answered: “Well, I’m not wearing a skirt, you see”. Thandi frowned. “Yes you are”. “No. I am not wearing a skirt. I am wearing a kilt”

03

“K-I-L-T?”, asked Thandi. “What is that?” “Yes. That’s right. It’s traditional wear from Scotland” he answered. He carried on walking before Thandi could ask him another question. There was so much more she wanted to know.

04

Thandi went to the library to find out where Scotland was. “Hello Thandi. You are always in the library. What are you looking for today?” Thandi turned around and looked up. “Hi Miss Jellin. I am actually looking for a book of maps.”

06

Miss Jellin smiled at her with that lovely smile she had. Then she asked “ Do you mean an atlas?” “Yes”, answered Thandi. “I have something better for you. Wait here” So Thandi waited.

07

And waited.

08

There came Miss Jellin. She was holding a large round map. “That’s a big map, Miss Jellin” Miss Jellin placed the round map on the table. “This is a globe, Thandi.” she said. It shows you every country, and even every capital city in the world. All you do is spin it around and look closely.”

09

The globe kept spinning until Miss Jellin stopped it and pointed to a country. “This is where we are”. “Cool!” exclaimed Thandi. “ I want you to have it”

11

Thandi was so excited. She took the globe home and could not wait to explore it. She set it on the table and spun it around and around and around...

Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland

The wind was blowing. The air was cool. The sun was shining but it was a cold day for Thandi. She gazed at the field ahead. The land was so vast. The grass was green. She wondered if there were any buildings; any sign of life. She decided to walk until she could find someone.

There was a herd of sheep. Thandi was excited because she knew there was someone leading the sheep. “HELLO” she shouted. “Hi there”, someone replied.

17

Thandi heard him but could not see him. Then he waved his stick in the air and she saw him. He was a shepard boy. She walked to him but he continued to walk. The sheep followed.

18

“ I have to keep walking” he said. “ You can walk with me if you want to”. So she did just that. “My name is Thandi” she said. “My name is Paul McDonald. It’s nice to meet you”.

“Where are you from, Thandi?” asked Paul. Thandi told him that she was from South Africa. “South Africa?” What brings you here? Thandi remembered the man on her street; the man that was wearing a kilt. So she answered: “ I wanted to know about Scotland. There was a man who was wearing a kilt. Why are you not wearing one?”

21

“Not everyone in Scotland wears kilts, Thandi” he replied. “Come, let me show you around”. Thandi and Paul took a bus to the capital of Scotland; Edinburgh.
