WELCOME

Great venue. Great shows. Keep ‘em coming.

Joyce Maranto, Maranto Studios Photography

Dear Friends, Every year, The Hanover Theatre works hard to attain our vision to be the finest performing arts center in New England. We are thrilled to echo the words of one theatregoer who said, “On a scale of 1-10, everything about The Hanover Theatre is 10++++” Again this year, our Broadway series was highly acclaimed and as another audience member noted, “Great venue. Great show. Keep ‘em coming.” With 197 performances and events and 208,898 visitors in our 2013-2014 season, we continue to be ranked among the top 40 theatres worldwide by Pollstar. In fact, with the help of our highly successful two-week run of Jersey Boys, along with sold-out performances of Jerry Seinfeld and Alton Brown, we were ranked as high as 12th in the world in the first quarter of 2014!

On another front, our youth initiatives took a giant step forward with a transformative collaboration with South High Community School around Memphis The Musical. Twelve hundred students participated in this exceptional initiative. For one student, the Memphis collaboration was summed up in the following words: “Seeing different people come from different countries and have different backgrounds, all coming together and doing such a big project, was incredible!” South High School’s dynamic, energetic and creative principal, Maureen Binienda, was recognized by the Broadway League with its annual Apple Award, presented to her in New York by Tommy Tune. In addition, our Youth Summer Program saw its strongest year ever, with 80 kids presenting Footloose – the Musical! over two three-week sessions to record audiences. Beginning in 2012, we undertook our Securing the Future capital campaign, with the goal of building a stronger financial footing for our young performing arts center. We are extremely grateful to report that through this campaign, the theatre raised $3.6 million from foundations, businesses, and many individual donors. And who said fundraising isn’t fun? A guest at our Tony Awards Gala noted, “I’ve attended many gala auctions in the past and this was the most magnificent event ever!” Finally, we want to thank all of our 30 full and part-time staff, 26 board members, and more than 250 volunteers for making The Hanover Theatre experience truly special. We don’t think it can be said better than these words from a recent theatregoer: “All of the staff, from the parking attendant helping us with the handicap spot, the volunteers at the door, the elevator operator, EVERYONE was helpful and courteous. And that was before the show, which was beyond fantastic. The Hanover Theatre is topnotch all the way!” We thank you all and will see you at the theatre.

Gratefully,

COMMUNITY IMPACT Adopt-A-School Program In September, the theatre’s director of education, Meghan Patrick, introduced the Adopt-A-School Program to the existing line-up of educational and cultural opportunities offered to students throughout the year.

Local dance teacher, Jen Agbay, donated her time to teaching a choreographed piece, which the students performed at the theatre during the last number of the production. Students’ artwork and classroom projects were displayed throughout the theatre’s lobby during the run of the show. Using the show as a tool for deeper understanding of a particular subject matter had truly amazing results in teaching and inspiring students! Nearly 1,200 students attended the performance at the theatre over two weekend days, with the Worcester Regional Transportation Authority providing free transportation. The program was nothing short of transformational, not only for students, but for South High teachers and administrators, theatre staff, and the touring production as well. The program will be continued in fall 2014 featuring the Broadway production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Congratulations, Maureen! Following is an excerpt from the Broadway League’s 2014 Educator Apple Awards presented in New York City June 30 in recognition of Maureen Binienda, principal of South High Community School:

Principal Maureen Binienda is being recognized for her collaboration on “Adopt A School: The Memphis Project.” This school-wide project integrated the arts into every subject across the curriculum and allowed 1,200 students to see their first touring Broadway show, Memphis. Her involvement in the community is remarkable and her passion for education is unmatched. 80% of her students live below the poverty level and 12% are homeless. Principal Binienda engaged her school in the “Memphis Project,” was fully committed to the initiative, and her passion was a major contributor to its success.

The theatre partnered with South High Community School in Worcester to provide this unique art-based learning experience. As The Hanover Theatre seeks innovative ways to fulfill its mission of fostering a love and appreciation for the performing arts in audiences of today and tomorrow, Memphis The Musical presented the perfect opportunity to collaborate with school administrators and teachers on a curriculum-based partnership. Over a period of six intensive weeks, all South High students participated in lessons within each subject that incorporated Memphis’ themes, historical and sociological elements, artistic aspects and musical score.

The Holy Cross students who participated in The Hanover Theatre’s Youth Summer Program found it to be an enriching and rewarding experience that complemented their formal training at the College. The opportunity to work with young people was challenging and enlightening as the students were forced to assume responsibilities as educators and mentors. Edward Isser Professor and chair of the theatre department College of the Holy Cross

The theatre’s established programs continued to engage students and partners across the central Massachusetts region: n The College of the Holy Cross played a significant role in the theatre’s annual Youth

Summer Program by providing funding for four Holy Cross interns to gain hands-on experience in areas of technical design and artistic direction. In total, nine students from Clark University, Hartt School of Music, Holy Cross, Merrimack College, Berklee College of Music and Salem State University worked as accompanists, acting assistants, costume designers, dance assistants, music assistants, scenic designers, and stage managers. The Youth Summer Program awarded ten full scholarships to underserved youth in the community.

n The Student Critic Program gave six students the opportunity to participate in writing

workshops taught by a professional theatre critic. Students attended six Broadway shows throughout the season and met after each production to have critical conversations about the experience. Following each session, students wrote fulllength reviews based on their experience and received feedback on their writing style from Telegram & Gazette reviewer, Paul Kolas, and other students in the program. The Student Critic Program aims to expose local youth to the arts and improve their writing, comprehension, and critical thinking skills.

Courtney Thibaudeau, CJ Gonzalez Photography

n 144 students from the Goddard Scholars Program at Sullivan Middle School were

provided with workshops on improv, public speaking, and how to write a musical. Students also visited the theatre for a personal tour, a performance of A Christmas Carol and an evening of improv comedy with Mochrie & Sherwood. The Goddard Scholars Academy awarded Meghan Patrick, director of education, the first Community Partner Appreciation Award this past May for her work with the school since 2011.

n 5,844 students from throughout central New England attended the student matinees of The Hanover Theatre’s A Christmas Carol production.

n In the spring, the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) Orchestra, Ballet Arts

Worcester and The Hanover Theatre collaborated on a multi-disciplinary interpretation photo: Tech Speaker-Colin Powell of Sergei Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf. 900 elementary school students from central Massachusetts were exposed to dance as a form of communication and story telling. The project aimed to unify music and movement in an effort to cultivate the musical taste of children from their very first theatrical experience. The performance introduced and connected the sights and sounds of musical instruments with the story’s characters.

n The theatre was delighted to partner with Worcester Technical High School for their

Motivational Speakers Program again this year. Special guest, Colin Powell, delivered an inspirational talk to students as they prepared to take their MCAS exams.

2013-14 The Broadway musical, Jersey Boys, was by far the largest show in our short history. It marked a milestone for the theatre, as our first two-week run of a touring Broadway production. Jersey Boys also demonstrated an increased level of industry confidence in the theatre’s ability to accommodate longer runs of higher profile shows. According to the producer of the show, Worcester was among the strongest markets nationally for this touring production. Other season highlights included Tony Bennett, who delivered a classy performance to an adoring audience, comedian Jerry Seinfeld, who sold out two shows in record time, and pop artist John Legend. The Worcester Connects Speaker Series, in partnership with the Worcester Telegram and Gazette, brought an intellectual and social dimension to our programming. The series helped build dialogue and conversation around key social issues like women’s equality, education, healthcare and civic leadership.

THE FRANKLIN SQUARE SOCIETY

The theatre is grateful to the more than 254 Franklin Square Society members who make up our leadership donor group. It is because of their dedication and commitment to our long-term success that we are positioned to take calculated risks that will allow us to plan for future growth. Without this forward-thinking group of individuals and corporations, our organization could not begin to fulfill its mission.

We are delighted to be corporate members of the Franklin Square Society because it gives us an opportunity to help bring the richness of the performing arts to our community. Susan & Jay Foley Foley Engines

MEMBERS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE

We received the original survey and responded that we supported raising the membership price. In fact, we just sent our renewal with an additional contribution. We really enjoy the theatre. It is a great facility. Our caregivers really enjoy the opportunity to attend shows and consider it a nice recognition. I truly believe The Hanover Theatre has had a very positive effect on Worcester. Bruce & Laurie Bender Owners Home Instead Senior Care

The Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts is a nonprofit organization and membership support is a vital source of contributed income to the theatre’s annual budget. It represents 70% of the theatre’s annual contributed income. The theatre made a commitment to better serve our members by hiring Kelly Hobson last May as our new membership coordinator. After a thorough evaluation of the theatre’s membership program this past year, new levels, fees and benefits were launched in July. In addition to these important changes, which were in keeping with the membership structure of other theatres our size in the region, a sustaining membership option was introduced. The goal of the sustainer program is to streamline the renewal and fulfillment process, build a strong base of loyal supporters, save on administrative costs and be more green. Automatic renewals are processed via debit or credit card and continued year after year. Monthly payments are available to sustaining members beginning at the Associate Level. We also transitioned to a new ticketing system and customer resource management tool during the 2013-2014 season, to boost our organization’s capacity to provide better customer service. Our investment in our new Audience View system enables the theatre’s box office, development and marketing departments to share the same database. The system integrates deeply with the theatre’s website, and includes marketing tools that have professionalized our e-mail reminders of upcoming performances and other outgoing communications, requiring much less labor-intensive processes by our staff. The system offers new functionality for theatre members in particular by tracking each member’s account and benefits across multiple users, including automating discounts and early access to tickets.

VOLUNTEERS The theatre board and staff continue to be grateful to the over 250 volunteers who serve our organization in various capacities, be it as ushers, greeters, ticket takers, administrative helpers, or gardeners. $659,502 was donated in in-kind service in the last fiscal year, contributing significantly to the day-to-day operation of the theatre.

Volunteers of the Year Sally Tracy and Tim Veilleux We are pleased to recognize both Sally Tracy and Tim Veilleux for their outstanding contributions to The Hanover Theatre’s volunteer program. Both Tim and Sally have been volunteering with us since 2008. Tim started with The Hanover Theatre during its inaugural season in the spring of 2008 and Sally joined later that fall. Early on, they were both recognized as dedicated and passionate volunteers and were selected to become part of the volunteer leadership as team leaders, helping to shepherd and train new volunteers each season. Two years ago, the idea came about to start a social committee for the volunteers in order to promote socializing and team building outside of the theatre. Sally and Tim immediately jumped at the chance to bring that vision to fruition. Under their guidance as co-chairs, the social committee has truly hit their stride. Two holiday parties, two road trips, four local events, five newsletters, two social surveys and a bulletin board later, the committee has made a significant impact on the camaraderie and friendship amongst our volunteer staff. Volunteers are constantly commenting on how the inception of the social committee has encouraged them to try new things and branch out in their social life. Tim has also volunteered at the Jimmy Fund Scooper Bowl in Boston, First Night Boston and Art in the Park at the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Lincoln, MA. When Tim is not volunteering with the theatre, he works as the Merchandise Manager at TJ Maxx in Framingham, where he has been a dedicated employee for 21 years. Sally also volunteers with Our Lady of Angels Church in Worcester, where she helps with the planning and organizing of dinners. In her spare time, she makes handmade afghans and scarves for local homeless shelters and is a trustee with her condo’s homeowners association. She currently works as an administrative assistant at WhiteWater, Inc. in Charlton. We are grateful for the creativity and enthusiasm Tim and Sally bring to the theatre. They truly exemplify the admirable qualities of our outstanding volunteer staff.

IN MEMORIAM Paula McGrail joined us shortly after our grand opening. She often worked as a greeter in the lobby because of her warm disposition and gentle smile. Paula fought a long, hard battle with cancer and is well-deserving of the peaceful rest she now has found.

Securing the Future Capital Campaign The Tony Awards Gala on Saturday, April 26, 2014 marked the culmination of the Securing the Future capital campaign. The theatre’s auditorium was transformed into a magnificent dining hall with an extension of the stage built to accommodate nearly 400 guests. In keeping with the theme of the event, The Broadway Boys performed musical numbers and our very own president and CEO, Troy Siebels, served as master of ceremonies. The evening included a cocktail reception, silent and live auctions, an elegant meal, and a humorous awards ceremony including a special recognition of Stasia Hovenesian for her One giant Tony Award to the planners, immeasurable contributions to creators, volunteers, and donors who Worcester’s arts community. The theatre is grateful to the many local companies who contributed to making this evening one of our most memorable to date. Through an impressive collection of auction items, elaborate Broadway themed floral centerpieces and much more, the gala was a massive group effort that demonstrated the generosity of so many.

all worked tirelessly to make this a stellar event, an unequivocal sign of The Hanover Theatre’s positive impact on the arts and the community. Ron Bidinger Board and FSS member The Hanover Theatre

Behind the scenes of this special evening was the tireless work of our dedicated staff and volunteers. We thank them all for their time and talent. The Securing the Future capital campaign began with a quiet phase in April 2011. Since then, Board, staff and campaign ambassadors continued to raise awareness of the theatre’s need to retire its debt in order to begin to reinvest in the maintenance and preservation of the building. The gala brought a close to the campaign and not only raised additional funds but provided a great opportunity to highlight our successes and thank loyal campaign supporters. The campaign and gala raised a total of $3.6 million.

NET REVENUE

The theatre’s FY2014 year-end financial statement shows a deficit due to several one-time expenses including our new Audience View ticketing system, as well as a focus on the Securing the Future capital campaign, which successfully raised $3.6 million to reduce debt and provide for the long-term preservation and maintenance of our historic facility. Those capital contributions are not reflected here, but did have an incremental negative impact on annual contributed revenues.
