Being a student of the arts requires creativity, collaboration and communication. Each and every day, we are proud to offer students of every age the opportunity to grow as artists and passionate, contributing members of society. Our theatre, music, dance and design offerings continue to grow each semester as does our exceptional faculty of master teaching artists from Boston, Providence, Hartford, New York and the surrounding area. A course allowing adult theatre enthusiasts to explore acting exercises as well as comedic and dramatic scene work. You’re never too old to step into the spotlight! Adult Acting II

Prerequisite: Adult Acting I or instructor’s permission This intermediate level class allows adults to delve into scene and monologue work to build upon the foundation built in Acting I. Playing Shakespeare (Teens & Adults)

Have you ever been interested in Shakespeare, but thought it was too hard, too old or too boring? Do you need to prepare a Shakespearean monologue for auditions? This is the class for you! Full of high intensity games and fun physical activities, this class takes Shakespeare’s language out of the musty classroom and puts it onto its feet. Students engage physically, vocally and imaginatively with the text, kicking Shakespeare off his pedestal! Emphasis will be placed on language, physicality, and fun, leaving the boring stuff at the door. The course is a beginner’s introduction to audio, intended for the novice who wishes to learn basic audio terminology, functionality of component, design, set up and operation of a basic sound system. iPad required for this class. Lighting I (Teens & Adults) Adult Improv (Ages 18+)

Explore laugh-filled exercises and skill-driven games in a mature setting. Structured, simple play guides each improviser to experience individual success, discover the joy of ensemble support and build the foundation for successful improvisation. Discover key concepts such as “yes, and,” collaboration, commitment, communication, relationship building and truth in comedy. Students are introduced to the vast array of lighting instruments available today and the role each type of fixture plays in entertainment lighting. Atmospheric effects, fixture accessories and expendables (gels and patterns) will also be explored in how they can augment the use of the lighting element. Dimming, control and safety protocols for hang and focus will also be reviewed. Students must bring an 8” adjustable (Crescent) wrench to class. This 90 min. class is designed to provide adults an environment where they can learn formal, classical training from the absolute beginner level. Students will be introduced to body placement/alignment, French vocabulary, barre, center and diagonal work. Technical components will be taught in a pace that easy to comprehend, apply and execute. Presented by Crocodile River Music, this class will give students the opportunity to move their bodies to the fun and high energy music of West Africa. Stage Makeup I (Grades 8-12)

Makeup intended for use in the theater is vastly different from makeup that you might wear out and about or even for a special occasion. Students will learn real world makeup techniques that they can use for the rest of their lives. Stage and special effects makeup will be explored. Create professional stage makeup for a variety of characters and roles while gaining knowledge of makeup materials, tools and techniques. Students are responsible for providing personal makeup and tools including a Ben Nye Crème Personal Kit in the appropriate skin tone. Stage Makeup II (Grades 8-12)

Intro to Technical Theatre (Grades 8-12)

Being on stage may garner applause, but it’s what happens behind the scenes that truly creates magic in theatre. Students will be introduced to the many forms of stage craft (stage management, lighting, sound, costuming, etc.) and learn how they all connect to create one magnificent production. Prerequisite: Stage Makeup I Students will delve deeper into stage makeup in relation to characters, special effects and prosthetics. New techniques, tools and products will be used to expand a student’s knowledge and experience in the world of stage makeup. Students are responsible for providing personal makeup and tools. - Jacob C. Fashion for the Theatre: An Introduction to Sewing (Ages 7-10, Ages 8-16)

Perfect for designers who want to learn to sew and have little to no sewing experience. Students will be introduced to machine sewing (including use and safety), hand sewing, how to read and use a pattern, as well as a bit of the history and importance of sewing as a theatre art. Students will also be exposed to fashion illustration as it relates to costume design, and how to use different mediums as they create their own design. Students will develop their skills and bring home a machine sewn project and a small hand sewn project based on sketches (black & white, color and framed to go home) inspired by a historical image from the theatre. Fashion for the Theatre: Sewing 101

(Ages 7-10, Ages 8-16) Intended for designers who want to learn more about sketching and sewing, and have some sewing experience. Using machine and hand sewing, students will create a 3-dimensional “build out” fashion illustration using a variety of fabrics and trims, as it relates to costume design, and instruction on how to use the different mediums in their design. Students will enhance their skills and bring home a machine sewn project and a small hand sewn project based on their built out sketch. Suited for designers who want to design and sew a theatre inspired couture design on a 22” fashion form. This class is designed for students have some sewing experience and want to learn to sew based on a design that they create. The class will provide students with an introduction to the history of couture costume fashion design in the theatre,

and allow them to create their own inspired design on a 22” professional scale dress form. Loose sketching, the use of fabrics, color and trims in design, draping, pinning, measuring, machine and hand sewing, and how to read and use a pattern will all be taught as the students create their designs. Students will be introduced to fashion illustration as it relates to costume design, and how to use different mediums as they create their own design. Students will bring their very own costume design to life! Students will leave the class with their sketches and completed form. Children explore characters, relationships and plot by telling stories from a variety of cultures and genres. Movement, expression and speech are developed as storytelling tools. Students practice listening and responding in character and begin to identify specific details of a performance. Stage Combat (Grades 6-12)

Learn how to slap, punch or fall on stage without hurting yourself or others in the process. Students will be introduced to the design, practice and performance of staged fighting. The class will focus on unarmed, or hand-to-hand, stage combat. Students will explore the techniques used to create the illusion of danger and the means by which we use violence to tell stories on stage and screen. Emphasis will be placed on safety, partnering and physicality. College Audition Monologue Prep (Grades 11-12)

Teen actors explore drama through improvisation, monologues and scene work. Students learn to build characters through choices, actions and emotions. Solo and ensemble work are explored. Students learn to respond to coaching, feedback and constructive criticism. This class is only offered in the fall semester. Every actor should be equipped with a few audition-ready monologues in their back pocket! Learn how to pick the right monologues and showcase your widest range. Understand the distinctions among “classical,” “modern” and “contemporary” selections. Gain the tools to break a monologue down via essential questions about given circumstances, relationships, motivation, stakes, arcs and tactics. Investigate the choices that make an audition professional and memorable. This class arms you with the techniques you need to create compelling, quality, successful work. Acting II (Grades 9-12)

Prerequisite: Acting I After exploring the “self” in the process of the actor as Acting I students, intermediate actors use Acting II to concentrate on how to share and communicate through truthfulness. Acting II also delves much further into the script, with scene work and further monologue work from great plays. Actors learn text analysis as well as how to break down and really prepare a scene. Teen Improv (Grades 9-12)

Teens advance their improvisational skills by building a toolbox of techniques to successfully create rich characters, heighten relationships, tackle group scenes and explore the environment and given circumstances. Students build trust through collaboration and commitment while gaining confidence in scene entrances and their ability to stay in the moment. An introduction to dance for girls and boys. A fun, creative class where students learn to move with the music and enrich their coordination and listening skills. Children will learn basic postures, positions and spatial structures. Props will also be introduced to help enrich the child’s expressive movement. Created for future dancers, this class focuses on body, space, force and time in order to further develop movements, musical awareness and creative expression. It will develop a child’s coordination, flexibility, musicality and listening skills, while the students are having fun. Creative materials such as hoops, balls, hats and scarves will be utilized to enhance a child’s creativity. Developed for more mature children, we will intensify the use of different levels of space, rhythm and qualities

Primary Ballet II (Ages 10-11)*

This class focuses on further development of control and balance with increased theory, including complete positions of the body. Barre, center work and introduction to diagonal combinations. French for “step of two”, it is a set dance for both male and female ballet dancers. Character dance is integral to much of the classical ballet repertoire and helps students to develop trust and confidence in partnering work. Payment may be made in full at the time of registration, or you may call the box office to arrange for two 50% payments. The Hanover Theatre Conservatory (THTC) will work with families in need of additional payment installments, but this option will incur a 5% fee. Late or declined payments will incur an additional $20 service fee per month. If tuition is not settled by the end of the year, students will not be permitted to perform in any end of year performances.

Withdrawals & Refunds

THTC has a final sale policy for all ticket purchases, tuition payments and fees. No refunds are issued for missed classes, schedule changes, class transfers, student withdrawals or students under disciplinary action. Requests to transfer or withdraw from classes due to extenuating circumstances must be submitted in writing to the conservatory for review and consideration of revised enrollment or pro-rated tuition credits. Approved tuition credits are not guaranteed and may be used for future classes only. Tuition credits cannot be used for tickets or other merchandise. Tuition credits expire if not used by the end of the following semester.

Cancellations & Makeup Classes

Every effort is made to operate classes on regularly scheduled days and times in order to avoid cancellations. Cancellations due to weather will be listed on the homepage of the theatre’s website at TheHanoverTheatre. org. Weather-related cancellations will be limited to two makeups per class. Policies

Students and parents (when applicable) must agree to The Hanover Theatre Conservatory policies and procedures in order to enroll in a class. These can be found at TheHanoverTheatre.org/conservatory.

Dress code

Theatre & Music: Please wear clothing that is comfortable to move in and free of graphics and text. No dresses or skirts, please. Remove any jewelry that may hinder movement. For some classes with a musical theatre or dance focus, dance shoes may be required. Technical Theatre & Design: Traditional technical theatre dress code requires black attire. Jewelry and loose-fitting clothing that pose a danger or hazard while working with technical and design equipment are prohibited. Dance: Proper dance attire and neatness are required for all dance classes. All dancers must have their hair secured back and away from their faces. Jewelry is not permitted.
