The Transformation of A Christmas Story Often, a story can be told in many different forms. Stories can be written in a book, told on film through movies or even performed live on stage in a play or musical. A CHRISTMAS STORY, THE MUSICAL is one of those stories! Book: "In God We Trust All Others Pay Cash," 1966
Live Musical: A Christmas Story The Musical, 2012
Movie: "A Christmas Story," 1983
The Man Behind the Story: Jean Shepherd
Based on his childhood in 1930s Indiana, Jean Shepherd spun a series of tales that he either published as short stories, read for his radio audience, or presented live at colleges. Shepherd compiled many of his tales into the book " In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash." This book was later the inspiration for the 1983 holiday film "A Christmas Story", which Shepherd co-authored. Beginning in the late 1980s and continuing through the 90s until today, "A Christmas Story" has steadily grown in popularity and now occupies the top spot on several prominent lists of all-time favorite Christmas movies. For more than a decade, TNT has broadcast a 24-hour marathon of the film each holiday season that has set ratings records. Shepherd can be heard as the narrator in the film and even makes an appearance in the department store scene. In addition to writing, Shepherd was a radio host and had a nightly program on WOR in New York during the 1950s, 60s and 70s. During that time, he developed a legion of devoted fans. After his death, Shepherd was inducted into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame on November 13, 2000.
