2013 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY
Building on a Strong Foundation
Dear Friends,
For the past four and a half years I have had the honor and privilege to chair the board of directors for The Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts. Now as the curtain closes on that role, I want to share with you some thoughts on the wonderful, trying, exciting, challenging, time-consuming and ultimately rewarding experience. When I began my service as a board member many years ago, the theatre was still very much a work in progress. Funding was a major issue, and structurally the theatre was a long way from opening. But open it did, and with a wonderful debut! It was a night we all remember. As a Worcester native, I always believed that this is a special community, but that at times it lacked the self-confidence to rise to its full potential. But my perception began to change as I saw the restoration of Mechanics Hall; followed by the building of what is now known as the DCU Center; the renovation of Union Station; the construction of a new courthouse; the commitment of the business and political leaders to the revitalization of downtown; and what I consider to be the city’s crown jewel, The Hanover Theatre. Apart from being a true world-class performing arts center, what is first and foremost to me is that the theatre is a symbol of the very best of Worcester as well as a catalyst for future growth and progress.

The theatre became a reality because there were dreamers, believers, skeptics, pragmatists, and philanthropists. Visionaries took advantage of what I told Sherry Redstone was the “gift of opportunity” that her family bestowed to this community through their donation of the former Loew’s Poli Palace Theatre to the Worcester Center for Performing Arts.
Since that original “gift,” the theatre has grown and prospered in large measure because of the work of our exceptional president and CEO, Troy Siebels, his hardworking staff; a very dedicated and committed board of directors and executive committee; our founders who were so generous with their financial contributions; our Franklin Square Society Members, capital campaign committee, volunteers, foundations, corporations, government officials; and ordinary citizens who recognized what a difference the theatre has made to our community. It has been extremely rewarding and personally gratifying to work with all of these groups to help ensure the future of the theatre. It has been my practice, when I attend a performance at the theatre (especially as the curtain closes and the audience is on its feet giving a thunderous standing ovation) that I look not at the stage but around at the audience. Inevitably, I view a sea of smiling faces. At that moment, I can’t help but feel how lucky I am to have played a small part in making that happen. Now, as I leave this stage, I will date myself by signing off and saying, thank you all very much for the “gift of opportunity” to serve as chair, “. . . and good night, Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are.” Sincerely yours,
James D. O’Brien, Jr. Chairman

The Hanover Theatre is proud to lead the way as one of the largest performing arts centers in the country to utilize solar power for over 80% of its electricity needs. Through the process of virtual net metering, and a solar farm initiative that went live last November, the theatre began pursuing environmentally-friendly alternatives for its energy needs.
Ted Hudson, The Hanover Theatre’s former facilities manager, initiated a number of environmentally-friendly projects.
We take this opportunity to acknowledge the hard work of our former facilities manager, Ted Hudson, as the recipient of the John S. Benedetto Award of Excellence. During his tenure at the theatre, Ted initiated a major solar project, as well as a significant lighting project with National Grid and Prism Energy Services, that reduced our lighting costs by 27%. Ted’s vision and perseverance on The Hanover Theatre staff visits the solar farm in Leicester, MA. behalf of the theatre and our community will be long remembered. More importantly, because of his leadership, the theatre is now deeply committed to continuing its exploration of new ways to reduce its carbon footprint.
Our Vision
To be the finest performing arts center in New England.

Five Years and Counting PHOTO: ANDREA SEWARD
The theatre passed an important milestone as we celebrated the five year anniversary of our grand opening on April 17 with a magnificent celebration featuring award winning jazz pianist, Diana Krall. The evening highlighted our accomplishments over the past five years and was an opportunity to thank all those who believed in the theatre’s potential. It’s gratifying to list our five year milestones, having met (and in many cases surpassing) the promises we made to our early stakeholders.
As of March 14, 2013 the theatre: ■■ Welcomed over 942,737 patrons, ■■ Presented over 539 shows and over 813 performances, ■■ Served over 67,380 students, ■■ Received the in-kind service of over 200 volunteers, valued at $1.2 million, ■■ Featured the Mighty Wurlitzer Organ, the largest of its kind in New England, ■■ Supported nonprofit fundraising efforts valued at over $60,000, ■■ Ranked in the top 50 theatres worldwide for three consecutive years by Pollstar, ■■ Received the National Trust for Historic Preservation Excellence Award (2010), and ■■ Placed on the Registry of Historic Sites by the National Park Service (2011). The theatre enjoyed some of the most memorable performances to date, including a sold-out run of Broadway’s Les Misérables, the Boston Pops, Celtic Woman, Paul Anka and Diana Krall. As we look forward to our 2013-2014 season, we are proud to say that our past success gives us greater visibility in the performing arts industry, and we will build on that success to attract more of the best shows and biggest performers. Volunteer Power Going Strong Last year, 208 individual volunteers served 3,168 hours. In total, our volunteers donated over $1.2 million in in-kind services to our nonprofit organization since 2008. Their valuable contributions help distinguish The Hanover Theatre from others by delivering a world-class cultural experience that begins the moment a patron walks through our doors.

This year’s Volunteer of the Year Award goes to gardening volunteer, Richard LaPlant. Richard has been volunteering with the theatre since 2008 and his contribution to the Federal Square Plaza is nothing short of remarkable. Almost daily, you will see Richard out in the plaza weeding, sweeping, pruning, planting and watering. He’s become quite friendly with folks in the neighborhood and employees at the courthouse. No matter how hot or cold it is, this 78-year old’s priority is always the maintenance of the plaza. Richard doesn’t just get his hands dirty in the soil, he is constantly coordinating and negotiating with the city to provide resources for our gardening team. He coordinates with Green Hill Park every spring to get all the free annuals they have to offer, including the beautiful canna our patrons enjoy year after year. If we need more soil or compost for our plantings, Richard finds a way to get it! He doesn’t just wait to be asked for help, he takes the initiative to go after new improvements like painting the fountain or convincing the city to repaint the crosswalks! His passion for this project and attention to detail are admired by all. All of the gardening volunteers agree that Richard is the type of person you can always count on. We are grateful to have such a generous person on our team.

Spotlight on Education with Director of Education Meghan Patrick PHOTO: COURTNEY GONZALEZ
Q: You just wrapped up two different three-week sessions of the Youth Summer Program (YSP). What are your goals when preparing for this highly intense performing arts program?
Q: Another popular program under your supervision is the Student Critic’s Program. How does this program have the power to enhance critical thinking in young people?
When we started this program in 2008, we wanted to provide students with an opportunity to learn critical thinking skills outside of the standard classroom. Our biggest challenge always comes at the beginning of the program when students are so concerned with the “format” of their writing. They become so acclimated towards taking in Our goal with the YSP is to provide area information and simply regurgitating it on the page that bringing their students with the opportunity to perform and own thoughts and feelings to their writing becomes a challenge. We train in a world-class performing arts venue. wanted to encourage students to “break the mold” when it came to We pay special attention to honing their skills their writing style. “There is no better gift than witnessing a child
discover confidence, understanding and pride through the arts.”
Q: What’s your favorite aspect of working with youth? I love working with children because they are so open to tr ying new things, changing and exploring. They want to know about the world, they want to know about each other and they want to understand themselves. The theatre paints a picture of the world around us. Students are able to use theatre as a dialogue to express themselves and find their identity. It provides students with the opportunity to interact with one another in a way that is safe, collaborative and sympathetic to their vulnerabilities. There is no better gift than witnessing a child discover confidence, understanding and pride through the arts.
Q: Tell me about the Goddard Scholars Program that you are currently involved in. In 2011, I was asked by Patricia Ryan of Sullivan Middle School to become a community partner for their Innovation School (referred to as Goddard Scholars Academy). The innovation plan helps students to make connections between school and the community. It strives to prepare students for college and the 21st century workplace through experiences outside of the standard classroom and curriculum. Each year, we develop a plan for each grade (6th, 7th and 8th) to have exposure to The Hanover Theatre and arts education throughout the school year. Over the past few years, these have included tours of the venue, performances, and in-school workshops for improvisation, public speaking, acting, and playwriting. What I love most about the program is the ownership students feel towards the theatre by the end of the year. The theatre becomes a part of their community.
Q: In today’s plugged-in world, what makes the theatre experience so important for young people? It is so easy for young people to isolate themselves with cell phones, computers, Facebook and other forms of social media where communication comes from a device rather than voice and expression. This change in our global communication leaves students struggling to communicate effectively. It becomes apparent that face to face interactions are a struggle when I am working with students on stage. So much of our communication is expressed not by what we say, but how we say it. Exposing children to theatre Local high school students participate in the provides them with a visual tool for Student Critic Program. communication and how to interpret emotions beyond words. Putting a student on stage forces them to explore their insecurities and focus on what they are physically portraying to the world. Live theatre provides a community approach to entertainment. Rather than sitting on a couch and silently watching the television, we react to the audience around us, we share in an experience. Rather than “liking” something on Facebook with a click of a button, we vocalize our feelings through laughter and applause. PHOTO: ANDREA SEWARD

A Christmas Carol Production
Brings Joy and Learning to Students Q: Do you think drama really has the power to affect social change, as Charles Dickens hoped to do with this story? The answer is yes. The theatre has always been an agent of social change from the great anti-war plays of the Greeks until the present day. More than film or television (which gets processed in the privacy of one’s home), the theatre has the power of affecting an entire audience in a moment of community.
PHOTO: SCOTT ERB
The A Christmas Carol production at the theatre is one of our most anticipated student matinee performances of the season. Last year 5,221 students attended the performance. The classic story is read and discussed in class and opportunities to engage with the cast are part of the learning process. The theatre’s partnership with teachers in making this important story come to life has been extraordinary. Students

are so excited to see the book they read brought to life on stage and they get a new appreciation for the story. After one of the performances last December, a student from Susan Kelley’s seventh grade class at Chocksett Middle School in Sterling asked Jeremy Lawrence (“Scrooge”) the following question:
There is a unity between the audience and the artists all affected by the same story. A Christmas Carol tells the story of a man whose world is transformed by a fantastical performance. We see a man, shut off from the world in his fear and anger, and learn that such behavior leads to lying close to death in a cold dark house without a friend at his side. Scrooge’s world is changed by this performance. And in his redemption from his solitary existence to a world where he engages with the people around him, many lives are changed almost immediately: in one man’s transformation the world is changed for the better. This story has endured far longer than any political pamphlet, moving generation after generation with its cautioning of living in greedy isolation from others. A Christmas Carol reminds us that the joyous spirit of Christmas Present is also the specter of ignorance and want; that we cannot have the one, without seeking remedy for the other. “God bless us EVERY one,” is a rallying cry to reach out and do some small thing to change the lives of those in need.
“The theatre has the power of affecting
an entire audience in a moment of community.”

Corporate, Foundation & College Support PHOTO: LAURIE CARR
Our corporate sponsors help make it possible for us to do all that we do. In return we seek to offer them maximum benefit, including extensive corporate visibility in advertising and print materials; use of the theatre’s lobby spaces for private pre- or post-performance functions; and additional benefits that may be tailored to specific needs. Corporate sponsors, as well as corporate members of the Franklin Square Society, are invited to participate in The Hanover Theatre Employee Discount Program, which offers discounts on tickets to most shows, as well as excellent last minute deep discounts and corporate offers; a benefit that has wide appeal for companies who value their employees.

Securing the Future Capital Campaign Support The Securing the Future capital campaign reached $2,926,932 in contributions as of June 30, 2013; the close of our fiscal year. The board of directors and staff would like to recognize the hard work of members of both the Capital Campaign Advisory Committee and the Campaign Ambassadors Steering Committee for their commitment to the goals of the campaign. This leadership group initiated plans for the Tony Awards Gala, an elegant red carpet event, to be held at the theatre on April 26, 2014.
SECURING THE FUTURE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTORS:
As part of the campaign, we launched the 1926 Society, the legacy giving society for The Hanover Theatre. The society’s name commemorates the year the historic Poli Palace Theatre first opened its doors to the public. We are currently seeking founding members for this new group and would like to acknowledge Bruce Hager and David Williams for becoming the first to join.

PATRONS ($100-$499)
The theatre’s members are its lifeblood. Their annual commitment of $50 or more gives us the stability we need to weather the volatility inherent in presenting live performances. The strong and steady growth of the theatre’s membership to 4,934 households in 2013 evidences the widespread benefit that The Hanover Theatre provides to the Greater Worcester community. Members get the best seats at the best prices, with early access to tickets and discounts to most performances.
