• Be sure to use the restroom before the show! You don’t want to miss any of the action. • Turn your cell phones off. • Keep your feet off the back of the seats. • Photography is never allowed! • It is standard etiquette to applaud at the end of the show. Not only are you applauding for the performers, but also the hard work that everyone has put in behind the scenes! • Above all, the theatre is truly a special place. Unlike movies or TV, what you see onstage is happening right before your eyes. The performers are giving their all, so it’s important that you give them your full attention.

The Story Behind The Show The Man Behind Charlie and the Chocolate Factory The show you are about to see was inspired by author Roald Dahl’s experiences as a boy when he became a chocolate taste tester while attending boarding school in England in 1929. Roald Dahl also authored many other books during his lifetime, including "Matilda," "The BFG" and "James and the Giant Peach." Although he died in 1990, his legacy lives on through his stories.
The Story
Author Roald Dahl
"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" is perhaps Roald Dahl’s best-known story. The story of Charlie Bucket, the five Golden Tickets, the Oompa-Loompas and the amazing Mr. Willy Wonka has become well known in our culture since it was first published in 1964. The original book has sold over 20 million copies worldwide and it is now available in 55 languages. Roald Dahl began working on "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" in 1961 shortly after finishing "James and the Giant Peach." The story went through several drafts, for example at first Charlie was one of ten children to enter the factory. Roald re-wrote the story three or four times until the story as we now know it was released in 1964.
The Many Forms of Willy Wonka Roald wrote the screenplay for the movie of "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," starring Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka. It was a process that came with some difficulties but the film went on to become a classic, with its iconic depictions of many of the story's key elements, from Golden Tickets to Everlasting Gobstoppers. In 2005, 15 years after Roald’s death, renowned filmmaker Tim Burton released his own film adaptation of the book. His "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" starred Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka. In 2013, a new musical production opened in London’s West End. Most recently, in 2017, the musical production opened on Broadway, followed by a national tour, which you are now seeing live!
