TERRITORY ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Land is sacred to all of us. Whether we consciously appreciate it or not, land is the space upon which we play, live, eat, find love and experience life. The land is ever-changing and ever-shifting, giving us and all other creatures and beings on the earth an infinite number of gifts and lessons. Today, we acknowledge the traditional, ancestral, unceded territory of the Nipmuc Nation on which we are working and performing. We recognize and respect Indigenous Peoples as traditional stewards of this land and the enduring relationship that exists between Indigenous Peoples and their traditional territories. This sort of acknowledgement is essential to human rights work across the world. It is essential to our work of honoring stories that explore the human experience. DIRECTOR’S NOTE

My history with this play dates back to last century. As an eighth grader in the 1990s, I first encountered The Crucible in middle school English, where my teacher, Mr. Ladd, refused to let anyone else read the role of Giles Corey. The script captured my imagination and has never let it go. In graduate school, I had the time of my life playing Abigail at Trinity Rep in Providence, Rhode Island; in 2019, I assisted Eric Tucker on the acclaimed Bedlam production in New York; and in 2023, I directed an experimental staged reading right here at THT Rep, where we explored the all-female casting concept.

The play is simply astonishing. Not only in terms of its air-tight structure, its complex characters, and its rich language – all of which are impeccable – but also in terms of its enduring ability to lay bare the demons that have haunted this nation since its violent inception. In his day, Arthur Miller wrote in response to McCarthyism and the Red Scare. In 2024, the play continues to speak not only to our propensity to indulge conspiracy theories – although it’s still all too real – but also to the vicious divide between the haves and have nots, and the weaponization of a zealous form of decidedly un-Christian Christianity designed to persecute, oppress and control people, especially women and their bodies.

If the play has a flaw, it’s that despite chronicling the heinous treatment of women, the heroic protagonist is nevertheless a man, while the villain is a traumatized teenage girl. This flaw has been addressed through classics-inspired contemporary works like John Proctor is the Villain by Kimberly Belflower and The Good John Proctor by Talene Monahon. Our creative team addresses that flaw and brings out the play’s most relevant themes in another way: by placing the entirety of the storytelling in womens’ hands, using womens’ bodies, womens’ voices, womens’ imaginations, womens’ talents and skills and craft and discipline and work.

That said, the play ultimately invites all of us to examine our relationship to feeling powerless. In the play, John Proctor must decide who he will be when he is forced to choose between lies and the truth, between himself and the common good, between life and death itself. In this moment, in this country, in this world, I hope our take on this stunning American play will ask the same of each of us: Who are you? What do you stand for? How will you be forged by the crucible of our time?

Thank you, friends, for joining us. Please lean in and experience The Crucible.
