Dear friends, 2020 has been a turbulent year for all of us throughout Worcester, across the country and around the world. The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory, along with most other cultural institutions, is facing the gravest threat we’ve faced in our history. The COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing shutdown have left thousands of theatres, museums and other cultural organizations without revenue to pay bills. As a direct result, hundreds of thousands of people in our industry are unemployed without any clear indication of when they might be able to return to work. Even as other sectors of the economy begin to reopen, it’s clear that theatres like ours will be among the last to return. Many of our peers around the country and the world will not survive this tragedy, and the impact on the performing arts will be felt for decades.

We cancelled performances beginning March 13, 2020. The following day, March 14, was the twelfth anniversary of our grand opening. We are so proud of the difference our organization has made on downtown Worcester over the past twelve years, and we are proud of the leading role we play in the city’s cultural landscape. We are proud of the often life-changing difference our theatre, dance, music and technical theatre classes make to the 500 students in our conservatory. We’re inspired by the impact the Adopt-A-School Program has on 2,400 students through our partnership with Worcester’s South High School and Burncoat High School. We are excited to share the experience of live theatre with more than 16,000 students (on average) from across central New England, who participate in school matinees each year. We are grateful for the more than 300 volunteers whose dedication and love for the theatre make our audiences feel so welcome. Without the theatre, these impacts would be lost. The 200 people that are employed by the theatre over the course of the year would lose some or all of their livelihood. The “new optimism” that we helped bring to the city would be replaced by a hole in the hearts of more than 200,000 people who visit the theatre each year. Because of your generosity, we have confidence that we will survive this period and return stronger. Stronger because of your financial contributions to The Hanover Theatre Resiliency Fund of more than $1.4 million to date. We’re also stronger because of what we’ve learned about ourselves during this moment in our history. We are focused not on what we can’t do, but on what we can do. In the following pages we’ll share what your support has made possible: • in our conservatory, where classes continue with students attending both virtually and in-person, in studios that are socially-distanced and disinfected hourly; • in Worcester Public Schools and other school districts nearby, who are participating in virtual school matinee performances with classroom-by-classroom engagement with performers and others; • in the new BrickBox Theater at the Jean McDonough Arts Center, where we’ve partnered with the Worcester Cultural Coalition to bring a new, intimate performance space to the Theatre District; and • for the holidays this year, when we’ll launch a A Christmas Carol Reimagined, rehearsed and filmed in the BrickBox Theater for you to enjoy at home. A Look Back at the Year This past season at the conservatory was marked with many exciting moments and new endeavors as well as some large challenges that required tremendous amounts of creative thinking and perseverance. The year began with the debut of an entirely redesigned production of The Nutcracker created by Broadway scenic designer, Christine Peters, with lighting design by Broadway’s Paul Miller. The production dazzled audiences and was made possible by a generous gift from Mary C. DeFeudis (read more on page 10). Construction was completed on new first floor studio space and students and faculty were eager to start utilizing the space in February of 2020. Shortly thereafter, COVID-19 threatened to put a stop to the semester as a whole. When it became clear that in person classes would have to be suspended for a while, the question was not if classes would continue, but how they would continue. We quickly developed a plan of action for moving to an online learning model and within one week, all conservatory classes were up and running on Zoom. “We knew that so many of our students would be counting on their classes for some sense of normalcy, not to mention the community that comes with taking part in a conservatory class,” said Meghan Montaner, director of education at the theatre and conservatory. “It was important to us to maintain that community for our students and faculty, regardless of distance.” Prior to classes going live online, conservatory faculty received extensive, personalized training on the Zoom platform and conducted rehearsal classes to ensure that 4 • Resiliency Meets Creativity • TheHanoverTheatre.org
students would receive the highest quality of instruction possible. For students of all ages, online classes offered structure and a sense of normalcy to an otherwise uncertain time. After the first day of online classes, Andrea Carlson, a student in Adult Improv II, said, “Thanks to The Hanover Theatre Conservatory my improv class took place online tonight. What a boost I got from a tiny bit of normalcy. I went from sobbing most of the day to fullfledged laughing. Surprising how regularity can make sense of chaos.” Moving classes online prevented us from having to cancel the remainder of the semester and face losing approximately $90,000 in outstanding tuition. We retained nearly all of our 500 students despite the transition to virtual learning. Given the success of our online classes, we launched our first summer session of classes in June, which generated $38,000 in tuition and helped to keep our teaching staff employed. All classes were offered entirely online via Zoom and over 100 students participated. Since March, we have hosted upwards of 10,000 hours of Zoom meetings including classes, private lessons, virtual performances and summer programs. This fall, we were able to provide students with the option to resume classes in person with strict safety guidelines while still offering online options. As of October 2020, 80% of our students are taking classes in person while 20% have elected to participate online. Through these tumultuous times, we are reminded of the importance of the arts. “The arts and culture are a powerful source of healing in these times of high stress and anxiety. We are committed to ensuring that our students have a place to learn and grow through arts education now, and in the future,” says Montaner.
Master Classes Last season, we offered 14 unique master class opportunities with shows including Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, The Play That Goes Wrong, Dance Theatre of Harlem, A Christmas Carol, A Bronx Tale, Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Bandstand and An American in Paris. Additional master classes were led by Ashley Ellis, principal dancer with Boston Ballet, and Telmo Moreira, ballet master at The Rock School for Dance Education in Philadelphia. Out of those 14 classes, ten were held in person and four were conducted virtually after the conservatory transitioned to online learning in the spring. Over 220 students attended these master classes and had the chance to interact with performing arts professionals from all different backgrounds.

In-School Workshops Our ability to conduct in-school workshops was significantly reduced this year due to COVID-19, as many of these workshops usually occur in the spring. The Hanover Theatre teaching artists were able to conduct four inschool workshops prior to closures at middle and high schools throughout central Massachusetts. These workshops were done to supplement students’ attendance to matinee performances of A Christmas Carol and in conjunction with our Goddard Scholars partnership with Sullivan Middle School.

Scholarships As we continue to increase our conservatory offerings and expand our reach, financial assistance has become even more important. In the 20192020 season, we offered over $50,000 in scholarships. These scholarships are made possible through our Access to the Arts Fund and by generous donations from supporters. We anticipate that the need for scholarships will continue to grow in 2020-2021 and hope to continue offering financial assistance so that all students, regardless of their socioeconomic background, can benefit from arts education.

The Teen YSP presented Monty Python’s SPAMALOT: A Socially Distanced Concert-ish Version, created specifically in light of the pandemic. Students rehearsed on Zoom for three hours in the mornings and then visited various outdoor locations around central Massachusetts to perform socially distanced scenes in the afternoon. The final production was presented drive-in movie style in the parking lot behind the theatre for students and their immediate family members. Pre-teen students presented Monty Python’s SPAMALOT
Young@Part version in an entirely virtual format for families and friends. While the format of these programs was different, we received incredibly positive feedback from both students and parents. One student in the teen program, Dylan M., said, “This program has a very special place in my heart. YSP has really helped me grow and figure out what actually matters to me. This show has been really important, especially this year, where most of us lost our spring shows and a bunch of our summer programs as well. So just having this has been so important and has really been a light in the darkness.” Our Summer Dance Intensive Week in August marked the first return back to the studios. All students and staff wore masks throughout the day and were spaced out to accommodate social distancing guidelines.
The Pappas Foundation Student Matinee Series In the 2019-2020 season, The Pappas Foundation committed to underwriting our annual student matinee series in order to provide free access for all Auburn Public School students over the next three years (approximately 2,300 students). The Pappas Foundation support also allowed us to subsidize some of the cost of the student matinee series for students outside of Auburn. As a result of this support, 10,000 area students attended student matinees of A Christmas Carol, THURGOOD, Cirque Mechanics: 42FT - A Menagerie of Mechanical Marvels and The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show. Other student matinee shows that were cancelled due to COVID-19 include The Scarlet Letter, The Stories of Peter and the Wolf & Hansel and Gretel, the National Geographic LIVE Speaker Series and Bandstand. In a typical year, the total number of students that attend matinees would be closer to 16,000. Student matinee tickets are significantly discounted to make these experiences possible for local schools. For the 2020-2021 school year, we plan to continue the program with a series of virtual student matinees. 6 • Resiliency Meets Creativity • TheHanoverTheatre.org

Community and Summer Programs
Youth Summer Programs While COVID-19 meant that we could not run our annual summer musical theatre and dance intensives in their traditional format, it was important to us to find new ways to continue these programs. With some creative thinking to restructure our musical theatre programs and lots of hard work to execute them, we successfully completed our Preteen Youth Summer Program and two sessions of our Teen Youth Summer Program (YSP).
Summer Together This summer, we joined forces with the Boys & Girls Club of Worcester, YouthConnect Worcester and more than ten other cultural organizations in the city to create the ‘Summer Together’ program for Worcester kids ages Pre-K to high school. The groups collaborated to conceive and execute an all-inclusive calendar with dozens of activities each week during July and August. The Summer Together program was made possible in part thanks to the United Way. We provided students with a six-part video monologue workshop produced and taught by one of our most popular teachers, Andrew Shoro.
Creative Movement Launched in 2019, Creative Movement is a dance collaboration with the Seven Hills Foundation Aspire Program here in Worcester. The Aspire Program was developed to better support individuals with disabilities and other significant life challenges. The program provides a weekly 1-hour class that introduces movement and rhythm while increasing physical awareness and activity. In addition, Creative Movement provides a supportive environment that increases self-esteem.
Boys & Girls Club Ballet Since 2017, we have partnered with the Boys & Girls Club of Worcester to offer a 32-week classical ballet program for their students. Early on in the partnership, a member of the conservatory’s ballet faculty would go to the Boys & Girls Club location each week to teach class. Now, students take a shuttle from the club and come directly to our studios for their class. Students are also provided with dance attire and perform in the conservatory’s annual Spring Reflection. This program is made possible by the Access to the Arts Fund.
Adopt-A-School: Bandstand In the spring of 2020, we celebrated the 7th year of our Adopt-A-School Program using arts to enhance the curriculum in the Worcester Public Schools. Superintendent Maureen Binienda and the faculty at both South and Burncoat high schools partnered with us to incorporate the themes, history and sociological impacts of a Broadway show into the curriculum across every subject as preparation for both schools (2,400 students) to see the Broadway tour of Bandstand. This year’s Adopt-A-School performance was scheduled for Friday, March 20, 2020. Although the curriculum work and projects were completed, the culminating live theatre event was cancelled due to COVID-19 school closures that same week. We are grateful to the Worcester Public Schools, City of Worcester and Durham Bus Company for collaborating with us on this program every year. This program is made possible by the generous support of the McDonough Foundation, Greater Worcester Community Foundation and our Access to the Arts donors.

Roald Dahl’s The Witches and Acts of Love In fall 2019, the conservatory launched the Youth Acting Company (YAC). Modeled after the conservatory’s Youth Ballet Company, the YAC allows actors to perform more frequently than they might at school and exposes them to multiple directors and styles of theatre. The first piece they performed was a Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) play, Roald Dahl’s The Witches. YAC’s second performance was an original piece that they wrote collectively, entitled Acts of Love.
So You Think You Can Dance One of the most notable performance opportunities in the 2019-2020 season came in October when a group of six dance students had the chance to perform an opening number for the So You Think You Can Dance Live! tour. It was the first time the show had ever invited local dancers to open for them. 8 • Resiliency Meets Creativity • TheHanoverTheatre.org
Romeo +Juliet The third piece in the YAC season was a virtual reading of Romeo + Juliet, a collaboration between the Youth Acting Company and The Hanover Theatre Repertory.
Youth America Grand Prix The last live performance opportunity for our students prior to COVID-19 was the Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) international ballet competition in Boston. Seven of our dance students represented the conservatory and four of them took home awards or recognitions. Students trained and rehearsed their pieces from September to March, working one-on-one with choreographers and rehearsal coaches to present their best work.

Student Choreography Our annual Student Choreography Concert that typically occurs in the spring was the first performance that we conducted virtually. On June 12, thirteen young choreographers shared their personal compositions in various styles of dance including contemporary, tap, modern and more. Students recorded videos of their dances and introduced them live during a Zoom webinar. The event was also broadcast on Facebook Live and can still be viewed by visiting our Facebook page.
Spring Zoom Performances While we were unable to hold any regularly scheduled end-of-year performances in the spring, we presented the following performances online, utilizing Zoom’s webinar feature: Adult Acting: Performance Class Final Presentation and Voice Recital for Students of Jane Shivick. In lieu of our usual Spring Reflection performance, each dance class recorded either their final class or a specific piece of choreography on Zoom. These recordings were then sent out to families so that they could still see all of the progress their students made over the course of the year.
Carnival of the Animals In March, our Youth Ballet Company members collaborated with Worcester Chamber Music Society to present SaintSaen’s Carnival of the Animals. This unique performance opportunity combined storytelling through music with dance to create a memorable experience for all. The Nutcracker’s Dazzling Transformation
The Hanover Theatre Conservatory’s production of The Nutcracker underwent a major transformation in 2019 with the help of internationally recognized scenic designer Christine Peters and lighting designer Paul Miller. Peters designed all of the scenic elements from scratch, and Miller brought them to life with a brand new lighting plot. This transformation had been in the works for months but was only made possible by a generous gift of $202,000 from Mary C. DeFeudis, honorary director of the theatre’s board of directors and an original founding member from the theatre’s 2008 opening. When Ballet Arts Worcester became part of the conservatory three years ago, The Nutcracker became a conservatory production. Since The Nutcracker provides an annual performance opportunity for nearly a hundred students, redesigning the show was an early discussion. Jennifer Agbay, the conservatory’s director of dance and the artistic director of The Nutcracker, always envisioned the production as a pop-up book come to life onstage. Peters was instantly excited at the possibility of making this magical world come to life on The Hanover Theatre’s stage. “Before The Nutcracker was one of the most famous ballets, it was a children’s book. We wanted to go back to its roots, which felt like a very good fit especially for a production with so many children involved. The large illustrative quality of a pop-up book come to life gives a nod to the original story while adding a sense of whimsy and imagination as the characters travel to the different fantasy lands,” said Peters. Once Peters’ new scenic designs came in, the creative team was thrilled with her vivid, colorful and layered 10 • Resiliency Meets Creativity • TheHanoverTheatre.org
imagery, which evoked a pop-up book design in keeping with Agbay’s vision of the show. However, the theatre had only budgeted to create custom backdrops for The Nutcracker. Peters had presented a more complex design that included cut portal drops for the “Snow” and “Land of Sweets” scenes, ornate, sweeping staircases in Clara’s house and even a custom curtain nicknamed the “I-Spy” curtain because its ornate design included hidden images from the story. The Nutcracker team was faced with two options: start eliminating elements or look for new funding. “When we were forced to think about eliminating the I-Spy curtain and other whimsical elements, we just had to seek out additional funding,” said Director of Education Meghan Montaner. “This show is such a family experience, and we had all become deeply invested in the interactive component that the curtain would bring to the experience.” DeFeudis was the first major individual contributor to the theatre’s $31 million dollar capital campaign to restore the historic venue. Her $1 million contribution enabled the restoration process to include decorative paint and gold leaf elements that would bring the original grandeur of the 1926 theatre back to life. Within days of receiving quotes from the scene shops for construction of The Nutcracker, Montaner and President and CEO Troy Siebels reached out to DeFeudis to see if she might, once again, be willing to invest in something so beautiful that was facing compromise due to financial restraints. With DeFeudis’ generous gift, the complete design was executed for the 2019 production, including the “I-Spy” curtain that pushed the theatre to seek new funding. Peters made an addition to the curtain’s design before it was sent off to the scene

shops, a wrapped present with a special tag that reads, “With love from Mary.” (pictured on opposite page) “I am so proud to have been a part of the renovation and the successes we have seen over these years,” DeFeudis said. “The Nutcracker is a signature show for the theatre. It inspires our young performers to reach for their dreams. I am happy to enhance our annual production of this timeless show and to encourage our talented teachers and students.” As one of the theatre’s annual holiday productions, we are thrilled that this new design will delight audiences for years to come. “This production provides so much to the city of Worcester and takes us on a sweet adventure, reminding us of the power of magic,” says Agbay. “The city can declare this treasured production as its own, and it will only get better over time.” The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory for the Performing Arts • 2020 Report to the Community • 11
Lights on JMAC and the BrickBox
Worcester’s new BrickBox Theater is a flexible performance space capable of hosting theatre, music, dance and other cultural events for audiences of up to 300. Located at 20 Franklin Street in the Jean McDonough Arts Center, the BrickBox is an initiative of the Worcester Cultural Coalition operated in partnership with The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory for the Performing Arts. In the latter half of 2019, we readied the BrickBox Theater for its grand opening by overseeing the completion of the theater itself, developing our rates, policies and procedures and undergoing a branding exercise to integrate the BrickBox and PopUp together under the umbrella of the Jean McDonough Arts Center, which we coronated with a joyful sign lighting event on March 5, 2020. Just two weeks later, the pandemic hit. We had been curating and were looking forward to hosting a wide range of events in the BrickBox, from the recording of a podcast with a live studio audience, to a night of music with Tony® Award winner Laura Benanti, to an independent film festival, to our own production of Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet featuring The Hanover Theatre Repertory (THT Rep) and the conservatory’s Youth Acting Company. Despite these and other events being pushed back due to COVID-19, we have found ways to move the BrickBox forward: • the dressing rooms, green room, rehearsal hall, kitchenette and wardrobe support spaces are well on their way to being fully outfitted; • a generous donor gifted a beautiful piano for the rehearsal hall; • we researched live streaming equipment and will have it available post haste; and • most notably, we launched The Hanover Theatre Repertory, committed to engaging, entertaining and energizing audiences with dynamic theatrical productions made in and for the BrickBox, with a focus on classics, modern-classics and classics-inspired works.

New Strategic Plan The following five-year strategic plan was developed in a collaborative process by our board of directors, staff and members of our community between November 2019 and March 2020. While portions of the plan must be reexamined in context with Covid-19, its underlying concepts remain relevant and central to our long-term success.

Preliminary renderings by Beta Group include a pedestrian plaza and an outdoor stage in front of the theatre. The project supports the vision of a growing cultural center downtown, adding to the vibrancy of the area and giving visitors another reason to make the city a vibrant cultural destination.

Estimated Impact from COVID-19 and Shutdown Projecting what the total financial impact of the pandemic and shutdown will be is a nearly impossible task. Impact will continue over the next several years, as audiences return incrementally, but costs increase to comply with the health and safety realities of operating in this “new normal.” Rather than attempt to project further into the future, the numbers below represent the period beginning with our first cancelled performance on March 13, 2020 and ending at the end of our current fiscal year on June 30, 2021. This estimate, updated October 15, 2020, is based on the following assumptions:
• Some smaller performances with a socially-distanced audience are possible in spring 2021, but a full return with Broadway touring shows is not possible until fall 2021.
• Most theatre staff are on furlough or greatly reduced hours, with only conservatory faculty and staff and a small administrative group remaining employed full time.
• Performances in the new BrickBox Theater are possible beginning in spring 2021. • Franklin Square Society members, corporate sponsors and others continue to support the theatre in the coming months at consistent levels.

H. Carter Hunt Volunteer of the Year • Elizabeth Casello We are pleased to recognize Elizabeth Casello for her outstanding contributions to The Hanover Theatre’s volunteer program. Elizabeth has been volunteering with us since the fall of 2011 and has contributed over 1,000 hours of volunteer service. In addition to volunteering as an event volunteer she loves sharing the history of the theatre as a docent tour guide, leading her fellow volunteers as a dedicated volunteer team leader, and a loving member of the volunteer social committee. Elizabeth truly believes in the power of volunteering and creating a truly unique experience for our patrons. Her outstanding customer service to our patrons, her genuine love and dedication to her fellow volunteers, and her loveable personality are unmatched. Elizabeth believes that the theatre has been an asset to the city, a stepping stone for further developing and growing the city of Worcester. She is proud to be a part of the theatre and we are proud to have her as a volunteer.

Our Vital Volunteers
The theatre volunteers play an integral part with the front-of-house team during shows and performances, as well as leading historic and architectural tours and supporting the theatre’s administrative departments with ongoing clerical and management needs. From July 2019 through June 2020, over 300 individual volunteers donated over 19,439 hours of service to the theatre. The current Massachusetts volunteer equivalency rate is $32.15. This means that The Hanover Theatre volunteers donated over $624,964 dollars of in-kind service this season. Since 2008, The Hanover Theatre volunteers have donated over 275,652 hours of service to the theatre. At today’s Massachusetts volunteer equivalency rate that translates to over $8.5 million of in-kind services over the past 12 years.
Before volunteering with the theatre, Elizabeth taught for 40 years in different capacities including kindergarten, 1st grade and 4th grade with the Worcester Public Schools, Auburn Public Schools and the Tom Thumb nursery school. She continued to substitute teach until the pandemic in March. Currently she is tutoring a first grade student in Shrewsbury. Elizabeth also volunteers for Preservation Worcester, Worcester Historical Museum, Abby’s House, the Manhattan Film Festival and REAM. Elizabeth Casello epitomizes the role of a caring, positive, and outgoing volunteer with a constant passion for everyone at the theatre. We are so thankful to have such a charismatic individual on our team. Her desire to help everyone she meets truly exemplifies the admirable qualities of our outstanding volunteer staff.
In Memoriam We fondly remember volunteer, Kristen Boosahda, who passed away in April 2020. Kristen began volunteering with the theatre in the fall of 2011 and was quickly recognized as a dedicated and passionate individual with a caring personality and loving heart. She will be greatly missed.

A Standing Ovation for Jon Rosbrook We are grateful to have a number of fulltime staff members that have been with The Hanover Theatre since our grand opening on March 14, 2008. One of those dedicated members of the team retired this June, production manager Jon Rosbrook. Jon has been our key person working with the thousands of performers and tours that have visited the theatre, overseeing everything happening backstage. After a long and impressive career, Jon has retired to a beautiful loft in upstate New York. We will miss him and wish him the best!
