2019 Report to the Community
Welcome
Troy Siebels, president & CEO and Marianne Felice, MD, chair of the board. Photo Mike Hendrickson.
Dear friend,
Much of what we do at The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory is very visible. More than 200,000 people came through our doors last year and helped to breathe life into downtown Worcester and its many new restaurants, cafés and bars. More than 350 young people provide a constant basis of activity in the Theatre District when they come through our conservatory doors Francis R Carrol each week to attend classes in acting, dance and technical production. It’s hard not to notice the work on a newly expanded Carroll Plaza, including an accessible pedestrian plaza directly in front of the theatre and conservatory. When construction is complete, visitors will enjoy free performances on the outdoor stage, flexible seating areas, trees, plantings and even a new water feature. It is our hope that this 2019 report to the community helps to shine a spotlight on our lesser known accomplishments that bring our community together through the performing arts. We’d like you to celebrate with us as we recognize some of the ways our dedicated staff and volunteers accomplish mission driven activities that enrich the lives of others in ways that the public may not see. In fiscal year 2019, we reached more than 7,000 young people through outreach programs including Adopt-A-School (with Worcester’s South and Burncoat High Schools), the Goddard Scholars program (Sullivan Middle School) and Rec Woo, the city’s free recreational summer program in the parks. In collaboration with the Kennedy Center, we also provided professional development workshops for teachers through our new Partners in Education Program. Philanthropic support from individuals, businesses and foundations to our Access to the Arts Fund provided $50,000 in scholarships to conservatory classes and our Youth Summer Program. Funding also helped adults with physical and mental challenges express themselves in creative movement classes through our partnership with Seven Hills Foundation. Our commitment, along with the generosity of our donors, also brought morning school performances to more than 15,000 students and enabled us to distribute more than 1,500 complimentary tickets through the United Way for families to enjoy A Christmas Carol together during the holidays. There are many threads through which we have become woven into the cultural fabric of our city and our region, and we’re proud of that. We have a great ability, and therefore a great responsibility, to positively impact the community around us. Through this report we hope to convey our gratitude to you and to all of our supporters who make our work possible. Warmly,
Marianne Felice, MD Chair of the Board

The President’s Dinner Fred and Patty Eppinger hosted the President’s Dinner, a special recognition event for Troy Siebels, our president and CEO. The evening celebrated his leadership during the theatre’s decade-long growth and development. He was praised for his contributions to the cultural vibrancy of Worcester, since the theatre opened in 2008. The evening highlighted the critical role Troy played in managing the historic restoration of the former Poli Palace Theatre and his tireless work building one of Worcester’s premier cultural organizations. During the special evening, theatre staff, board members and close friends toasted his collaborative approach to transforming the second largest city in New England into a regional destination. The most entertaining part of the evening was a musical revue performed by Troy, who took the audience on a hilarious lyrical journey of the theatre’s ten years of shows and performances.
“Troy’s leadership of the theatre over the last 15 years has been extraordinary, from driving our building’s renovation to spearheading the birth of our organization, to creating the city’s most vibrant cultural organization. We are blessed to have him leading our theatre.” - Fred & Patty Eppinger

The campaign takes a broader view of the role the theatre plays in creating a 21st century cultural destination. It also demonstrates our commitment to stewarding positive change beyond our current footprint with the vision of a culturally vibrant theatre district and city core. We gratefully acknowledge our donors who are bringing Worcester to the next level of growth and revitalization.

Theatre District Campaign Donors
In June 2016, The Hanover Theatre launched the Theatre District Campaign to acquire and renovate the 551 Main Street building, develop and open our new conservatory for the performing arts, furnish, equip and program the new Francis R. Carroll Plaza being constructed by the city of Worcester in front of the theatre and create a fund to support creative activities on the new plaza and throughout the district.
Fostering a New Generation
“The conservatory feels like a second home of mine, and it’s a place where I feel accepted for who I really am, and supported in striving to be who I want to be. As someone possibly seeking a career in the musical theatre industry later in life, The Hanover Theatre Conservatory programs are giving me quite an advantage and a head start into my life as a performer.” -Sami S.

Conservatory Growth Since the conservatory’s opening over two years ago, we have been thrilled to offer a wide variety of classes in the performing arts. The conservatory has grown from having 197 individual students in year one, to 543 students in year three. This continued growth created a need for even more studio space to accommodate additional classes and students. Construction has begun on three new studios as well as a vocal rehearsal space located on the first floor of the conservatory and event center at 551 Main Street. These new spaces come at the perfect time as the conservatory’s class offerings continue to expand in drama, dance, design and music for students of all ages. The new ground level studios will be the perfect extension of our state-of-the art facilities with sprung floors and increased ceiling height, as well as easy access to the new plaza being developed right outside the front door. The additional space will allow for more flexibility in the conservatory schedule and will help to accommodate longer, 90-minute class times for select offerings. “When we opened back in January of 2017, we couldn’t have imagined such incredible growth in just two years. We are grateful to our talented students, their supportive families and our gifted, compassionate faculty who provide quality education and unique experiences for our students each and every day,” states Meghan Montaner, director of education. 6 • Enrich. Engage. Empower. • TheHanoverTheatre.org
The fall semester brought the introduction of the conservatory’s Youth Acting Company, a resident dramatic performance group comprised of select students between the ages of 12 and 19. The Youth Acting Company is modeled after the conservatory’s existing resident dance company, the Youth Ballet Company. Housing two performance groups will increase the demand for rehearsal space, and these additional studios will provide ample room for those rehearsals in addition to classes. As we continue our efforts to ignite the city’s Theatre District, we are excited to have arts education visible at street level. The success of the conservatory has meant that hundreds of students and parents are populating Worcester’s downtown six days a week and, with that, activating space that otherwise did not experience much foot traffic. “As a theatre it’s really important to us to be outward facing, and that’s true for the conservatory as well,” says Troy Siebels, president and CEO of The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory. “We intend to be a vital and dynamic part of a theatre district that welcomes and engages all those that live, work and visit downtown. Bringing our conservatory studios to street level helps to demonstrate some of that vitality, and celebrate the great work our students are doing.”
Photo Mike Nyman.
Scholarships As we continue to increase our conservatory offerings and expand our reach, financial assistance has become even more important. In the 2018-2019 season, we offered over $50,000 in scholarships representing a $30,000 increase in scholarship funding from the previous year. These scholarships are made possible through our Access to the Arts Fund and by generous donations from supporters. We hope to continue offering financial assistance so that all students, regardless of their socioeconomic background, can benefit from arts education.
Apprenticeships During our 2019 fiscal year, seven conservatory students received special opportunities to work behind the scenes in technical roles for The Nutcracker, A Christmas Carol, Peter & the Wolf and Hansel & Gretel as well as the conservatory’s Spring Reflection. These opportunities were tied to classroom learning and students were connected to professional stage managers, lighting designers and sound engineers as mentors throughout the process.
“Studying in such a professional school has had a huge impact on my dancing. It is wonderful to be in a community with such great people. I am very excited for my future at the conservatory!” -Leland P.

Sharing Our Love for the Arts
Creative Movement In 2019, we launched an exciting new project in collaboration with the Seven Hills Foundation Aspire Program here in Worcester. The Aspire Program was developed to better support individuals with disabilities and other significant life challenges. Our Creative Movement class provides individuals with a weekly 1-hour class that is fun and interactive while introducing dance movements and rhythm that increase physical awareness and activity while providing a supportive environment that increases self-esteem. Ballet instructor, Charlotte McNutt, works with adults from Seven Hills during a Creative Movement class for individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities.
Master Classes Last season, we offered 19 unique master class opportunities with touring shows including The Wizard of Oz, Finding Neverland, Diavolo: Architecture in Motion, The Lightning Thief, On Your Feet, Tap Dogs and Waitress among others. Classes ranged from musical theatre audition techniques to special effects makeup and even backstage tours to examine technical theatre elements in action. Over 200 students attended these master classes and had the chance to interact with performing arts professionals from all different backgrounds. Youth Summer Programs Our annual musical theatre and dance intensives kept the theatre and conservatory busy all summer. New this year, students in our Teen Youth Summer Program had to qualify back in February. Two groups of 45 performed Meredith Willson’s classic The Music Man. The Pre-Teen Program put together an entertaining junior version of the same production and our Children’s Program worked with a record number of youngsters ages 6-8. In addition, we were proud to offer internships to 20 local college students. Rec Woo The Recreation Worcester Summer Program is a six-week camp which takes place at 10 different public parks throughout the city. The program emphasizes sports, arts, fun and team work, and is facilitated by local staff and community partners. As one of these partners, The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory sent two teaching artists to lead drama workshops at each of the parks over the course of the six weeks. These teaching artists interacted with nearly 750 Worcester children ages 7-13 years old. Participation is free for children who live in the city. Kennedy Center Partners in Ed In 2017, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. selected us to participate in the prestigious Partners in Education program in partnership with the Worcester Public Schools. We were thrilled to be the only organization in Massachusetts chosen to participate in this program. In 2019, under the Kennedy Center’s guidance, we offered two professional development workshops and two in-class demonstrations, for a total of 60 WPS teachers from 20 different schools and across 14 different subjects. Both of these workshops were very well received and we are planning for three more workshops in 2020. 8 • Enrich. Engage. Empower. • TheHanoverTheatre.org
“I love that the conservatory offers master classes for students. It is truly something that you cannot find anywhere else. I am extremely grateful to have found a learning environment that offers these opportunities.” -Julianna L.

Adopt-A-School: On Your Feet! In the spring of 2019, we celebrated the sixth year of our Adopt-A-School Program using arts to enhance the curriculum in our public schools. Superintendent Maureen Binienda and the faculty at both South and Burncoat high schools partnered with us to incorporate the themes, history and sociological impacts of a Broadway show into the curriculum across every subject in preparation for both schools (2,400 students) to see the Broadway tour of On Your Feet! Actors visited the schools the day before the performance and the tour gave students special permission to perform in the aisles during the show’s finale. Many of the students only experience live theatre through this program. We are grateful to the Worcester Public Schools, city of Worcester and Durham Bus Company for continuing to collaborate with us on this program. This program is made possible by the generous support of the National Endowment for the Arts, the McDonough Foundation, Greater Worcester Community Foundation, Lamoureux Pagano Associates, The 200 Foundation and our Access to the Arts donors. We thank them for making this program possible every year. At an annual cost of nearly $150,000, this program carries quite a price tag but the experience and impact left on the students is priceless.
Student Matinees Last season, over 16,000 area students attended student matinees of A Christmas Carol, The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical, THURGOOD, Hamlet, The Stories of Peter & the Wolf and Hansel & Gretel, On Your Feet! and The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show. Student matinee tickets are significantly discounted to make these experiences possible for local schools.
In-School Workshops In 2019, conservatory teaching artists led 44 in-school workshops at middle and high schools throughout Worcester. A majority of those workshops were done in connection with a curriculum based program entitled Culture LEAP and our Goddard Scholars partnership with Sullivan Middle School. Jeremy Lawrence aka “Scrooge” from A Christmas Carol visits Sullivan Middle School.

1926 Legacy Society
The 1926 Legacy Society Luncheon featuring Dr. Charles Steinberg Dr. Charles Steinberg beautifully captured the musical legacy of the Boston Red Sox as the featured speaker at the annual 1926 Legacy Society luncheon on May 9. As president of the Pawtucket Red Sox and former executive vice president of the Boston Red Sox, Dr. Steinberg is best known for orchestrating some of the most memorable ceremonies at Fenway Park, as well as implementing unique community initiatives such as the Padres Scholars, Red Sox Scholars, PawSox Scholars programs and landmark awareness events for pediatric cancer research. With the Pawtucket Red Sox moving to Worcester in 2021, the presentation was not only timely, but also tremendously entertaining. Dr. Steinberg creatively chronicled the history behind the music of the beloved ball team on the piano and guitar, and illustrated how several of those songs became Fenway favorites. The 1926 Legacy Society was established to secure the financial sustainability of The Hanover Theatre through the contribution of individual planned gifts and bequests. The luncheon is an annual event that offers the theatre an opportunity to explain the benefits of membership to the society and highlight the rich history and legacy of the theatre, community and the performing arts.

Taking it to the Street
“Bay State Savings Bank is proud to support the Downtown Worcester Business Improvement District (BID). From the very beginning, we recognized the importance of improving our neighborhood and creating a thriving downtown. As a community bank, nothing is more important to us than COMMUNITY, and we can already see the positive impact that the BID is having. We are proud to be part of an exciting Theatre District, and are looking forward to working with the local property owners collectively as the city continues to grow.” -Peter Alden, President & CEO of Bay State Savings Bank

Theatre District News The Hanover Theatre played a leading role in the creation of Worcester’s new Business Improvement District (BID), which was formally established by a City Council vote in November 2018. The BID is a special assessment district, financing supplemental services and enhancements above and beyond the basic services provided by the city of Worcester. Through a payment (in addition to annual property taxes), property owners within the district fund cleaning, beautification and safety services.
In partnership with the Worcester Business Development Corporation and the Theatre District Alliance, Troy Siebels, chair of the BID board of directors, played an active role in advocating for the district’s establishment. Evelyn Darling was hired as the BID’s new executive director in April 2019. In May, StreetPlus was brought on board to provide a team of ambassadors, whom you may have seen on the streets throughout the downtown area spray washing sidewalks, picking up litter, removing graffiti, and helping to make the area clean, safe and welcoming for patrons, visitors and residents.

H. Carter Hunt Volunteer of the Year John Riccio This year’s Volunteer of the Year has a long history of volunteerism and service. In the late 1960s, John Riccio served as a VISTA volunteer for the Domestic Peace Corp during the Civil Rights Movement and never seemed to slow down. John’s career as an educator spanned 45 years and he dedicated 43 of them to the Worcester Public Schools as a teacher, assistant principal and principal. He currently volunteers for many local organizations including: Worcester Historical Museum, Audio Journal, RSVP of Worcester, Schola Gregoriana, a variety of local community theatre groups, a movie extra whenever possible, as a board member for Edward M. Kennedy Community Health Center and most notably for The Hanover Theatre in a variety of capacities.

Priceless Contributions
The theatre volunteers play an integral part with the front-of-house team during shows and performances, as well as leading historic and architectural tours and supporting the theatre’s administrative departments with ongoing clerical and management needs. Last year, 318 individual volunteers served 27,090 hours. Since 2008, The Hanover Theatre volunteers have donated over 256,213 hours of service to the theatre. At today’s Massachusetts volunteer equivalency rate that translates to over $7.6 million of in-kind services.
Theatre and performance have been a part of John’s life since elementary school. He began performing as a child in elementary school and had the opportunity to attend Broadway shows as a child. Even then he dreamed of being a theatre usher and continued to envy the ushers every time he attended a show in New York City. When John joined the corps of volunteer ushers with the theatre, he quickly became someone who willingly embraced whatever role he was assigned, from costumed ticket taker to decorating the theatre for the holidays, or from helping the administrative team to leading educational, historic and architectural tours.
In Memoriam We fondly remember the following volunteers for their generosity and commitment to the theatre. They will be remembered and deeply missed by their friends and patrons at The Hanover Theatre. Carol Fauerbach began volunteering with the theatre in the fall of 2014 and was quickly recognized as a passionate individual with a caring personality and a generous heart. She would have been celebrating her fifth year.
The Mighty Wurlitzer Organ Team Founder and Technical Consultant, Don Phipps Curator, Bruce Hager Resident Organist, Len Beyersdorfer Assistant Curator, John Phipps
Maureen Shaughnessy started in the 2008 inaugural season and was a dedicated and loving individual who enriched the lives of those around her. She contributed to The Hanover Theatre community in so many ways.
This team provides exemplary service in maintaining the Mighty Wurlitzer Organ, our treasured musical instrument. Organist Len Beyersdorfer shares his talent during pre-show concerts and theatre tours. Don Phipps, Bruce Hager and John Phipps take excellent care of the organ, so it always sounds its best, especially during our silent movies and our annual production of A Christmas Carol.

In Memoriam We fondly remember the following individuals for their generosity and commitment to the theatre. They will both be remembered and deeply missed by their friends at The Hanover Theatre. David “Duddie” Massad was an early corporate supporter of the theatre through his former role as chairman of Commerce Bank. His significant sponsorship support helped to underwrite the theatre’s annual production of The Nutcracker among other Broadway shows and concerts. Duddie was a warm and generous man who loved the city of Worcester and took special delight in providing theatre tickets to individuals in the community to enjoy a special night out on the town. Elizabeth “Betty” Baldarelli loved live theatre and when The Hanover Theatre became a reality, she lost no time in joining the Franklin Square Society. She loved being a subscriber and delighted in inviting friends to join her for performances at the theatre.

In Memoriam Carolyn Ambrose, a colleague and dear friend, was a valued member of the theatre’s development team from 2010-2017. Her creativity, enthusiasm and sunny personality are deeply missed by her former colleagues as well as the many donors and volunteers she warmly touched during her time at the theatre. Carolyn was special in her love and enthusiasm for life. She knew how to be a good friend, brighten up a room with her warm smile, make you laugh, and truly understood what made for a full and rich life.
