Musical soul mates, Diana Krall and Tony Bennett, are both back by popular demand this season. Their individual tours and performances hold special meaning for them at a time when their new and highly anticipated album “Love is Here to Stay” has just been released. Diana and Tony celebrate their shared love of the music of George and Ira Gershwin on this collaborative album and it is included with the purchase of every pair of tickets to Krall’s performance on Saturday, October 6. Diana Krall’s Turn Up The Quiet World Tour, featuring material from her album by the same name, is now recognized as the biggest hit in the artist’s career. The New York Times calls her voice “at once cool and sultry, wielded with a rhythmic sophistication,” and DOWNBEAT Magazine describes the album as “spellbinding” and that “Krall knows how to put her own distinctive stamp on decades-old standards, making them sound fresh and vibrant.” On a personal note, the album is dedicated to her long-time mentor page 8

and collaborator, producer Tommy LiPuma, since it was the last recording she made with him before his sudden death last year. There is no doubt of Krall’s superstar status, as she is the only jazz singer with eight albums debuting at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. With five Grammy® Awards, ten Juno® Awards and nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. She transcends musical styles and is one of the most recognizable artists of our time. With worldwide record sales in the millions, and dozens of platinum and gold albums to his credit, Tony Bennett is a musician who touches the hearts and souls of audiences with his legendary vocals and charming stage presence. Characters Come to Life
We’re Not In Kansas Anymore… The Wizard of Oz Travels Over the Rainbow The greatest family musical of all time, The Wizard of Oz, is touching down November 8-11 at The Hanover Theatre. Leading the cast as Dorothy is Kalie Kaimann, who gave us some sneak peeks into her favorite parts of the production during a recent Behind the Scenes with The Hanover Theatre interview. Singing the iconic song “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” is especially meaningful for the actress. “This song epitomizes Dorothy’s life, longings and experience. As I perform this amazing song, every word, note and phrase represents my story and transports everyone in the audience to the same place in time, where dreams really do come true and trouble melts like lemon drops.” When asked about her favorite scenes, Kalie gushes about the special effects during the twister and to look for “Jitterbug,” an extremely fun number originally cut from the movie, but revived for the Broadway musical. For more Behind the Scenes with The Hanover Theatre content, tune into WCRN AM830 Saturdays at 1 pm or visit our blog at thehanovertheatreblog.org.

FOX’s hit reality dance competition “So You Think You Can Dance” is returning to the stage this fall for its annual live tour. So You Think You Can Dance Live! 2018 features the Top 10 contestants from Season 15 (Jensen Arnold, Hannahlei Cabanilla, Genessy Castillo, Evan DeBenedetto, Jay Jay Dixonbey, Magdalena Fialek, Darius Hickman, Chelsea Hough, Cole Mills and Slavik Pustovoytov) who will exhibit the hottest show-stopping routines from the season in addition to original pieces choreographed for the tour when they perform at The Hanover Theatre on Saturday, October 20. DIAVOLO | Architecture in Motion®, performing at the theatre Saturday, January 26, is an American dance company founded by Jacques Heim in 1992. The company’s movement style encompasses modern dance, acrobatics and gymnastics and has won numerous awards and accolades for its unique and creative performances. As Los Angeles Times dance critic Lewis Segal explains, the dancers “make precisely coordinated feats look improvisational, even reckless…to say Diavolo is exciting is redundant.” Advancing to the finals after winning the Judges’ Choice Award in Season 12 of “America’s Got Talent”, the group became famous for performing acrobatic and dance movement set on a variety of oversized architectural structures. These structures serve as a backdrop to the dramatic movements that create metaphors for humanity’s everyday struggles, from relationships to the absurdity of life, and the attempt to maintain our humanity in an increasingly technological world. From their humble beginnings in Cuba, Emilio and Gloria Estefan came to America and broke through all barriers to become a crossover sensation at the very top of the pop music world. Exquisite Performances The Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts and Music Worcester are pleased to present a selection of extraordinary performances throughout the year. As Music Worcester marks its 160th year, its long tradition of bringing some of the world’s most distinguished artists to Worcester continues. Prepare to be amazed on Wednesday, November 7 when perhaps the best opera singer of all time returns to the stage in the ground-breaking Callas in Concert: The Hologram Tour. Forty years ago, Maria Callas shrugged off the earthly binds of temporal life, leaving a bereft world longing for her presence, her performances and her voice. This is your chance to see her once again in all her grandeur, during a triumphant event that brings the beloved La Divina to the stage via hologram, singing to the accompaniment of a full, live orchestra. As this unprecedented performance unfolds, you will surrender all notions of what is real and get lost in the magic of Maria Callas. From the moment the curtain rises, you are a captive in the world of Callas. Hear her most iconic performances of Bellini, Bizet, Verdi, Puccini and more feature recordings digitally remastered and brought to life on stage through breathtaking state-ofthe-art digital and laser technology. Yet this is far from a replay of her past glories. You will delight as the performer playfully engages with the conductor and the audience. On Tuesday, January 15, internationally acclaimed pianist Simone Dinnerstein and The Pam Tanowitz Dance Company perform a brilliantly re-imagined arrangement of Bach’s masterpiece in New Work for Goldberg Variations. The collaboration came after Dinnerstein’s No. 1 release of “Bach’s Goldberg Variations” when the pianist wanted to work with a leading choreographer to develop an evening-length collaboration with movement, music and performance. Tanowitz is famous for work that is both distinctly modern, playfully timeless and extremely musical all at the same time. See for yourself what the New York Times describes as “…a riveting dialogue of movement and music.” The Russian National Ballet returns by popular demand on Friday, March 22 with the timeless ballet classic, Swan Lake. Founded in the late 1980s by the legendary Bolshoi principal dancer Elena Radchenko, the company has invigorated the tradition of Russian Ballet with new developments in dance from around the world. Experience the beauty, grace, artistry and precision which continues to enlighten, inspire and entertain audiences around the world with one of the most popular storybook ballets ever performed. My first year in the program I noticed the expertise in all fields of musical theatre from interactive and technically focused dance classes to the logistics and formalities of an appropriate audition. I wanted to continue to train with directors that have been in the theatre business for many years, and would provide constructive criticism and useful information so I continued my education with the YSP and eventually the conservatory. I feel more confident and well-rounded as a dancer and performer because of the training I received at the conservatory.”
“I’ve been serious about going into the entertainment industry since I was very young. However, as I grew older I realized I was missing crucial parts in my technique and The Hanover Theatre Conservatory helped fill in those holes. The intensive classes helped build the framework to keep me competitive at the collegiate level. If you’re serious about acting, you are shooting yourself in the foot if you don’t take advantage of this program.”

“The conservatory gave me an extremely unique experience I wouldn’t have been able to find anywhere else. I am leaving THTC feeling grateful for the opportunities I have been given, and eager to tackle the future. I knew that the conservatory was the place I needed to be in order to be as prepared as possible to pursue a professional career.”
“I had gone for a decent period of my life with no formal training simply because there was no space that I felt had a program that could really challenge me and push me to unlock my potential. I feel as though THTC has been instrumental to me moving forward in my journey. Going into auditions for college I felt more prepared and confident in my abilities, and was able to feel happy with what I presented of myself and the work that I did. The faculty that I’ve been lucky to work with have helped instill in me a passion for the craft with their own jovialness, dedication and experience that I hope to bring everywhere I go in life.” page 18

“It’s really difficult to decide to pursue a career in the arts. It feels like there’s a sort of stigma around it as people instantly equate choosing a career in the arts with failure. I really had a hard time deciding what I wanted to do, but my time at YSP reminded me how much I love performing and that there’s nothing else I’d rather do with my life, no matter what sort of difficulties may lie ahead. Prepared with a strong educational foundation set by the conservatory, I know that I’m ready for whatever challenges face me.” Gabriela Gil Shrewsbury Skidmore College Major: Dance

“I chose to continue my dance education at the conservatory because of its focus on precise technique in the ballet, modern and contemporary styles. I also really enjoyed the close-knit relationships established with the teachers through small class sizes. Having one-on-one opportunities to learn with the teachers gave me more beneficial information on how to progress at a faster rate. The high expectations, continuous push for growth and professionalism of the conservatory are all key factors which have helped shape me for my upcoming college plans in a conservatory dance program.”
“My two years here have taught me more than I could possibly imagine and prepared me to become a triple threat, so I am ready to pursue the arts with confidence and understanding in my field. I have always loved theatre but The Hanover Theatre is where I learned to live it. The discovery, possibility and capability I gained from THTC have prepared me for this next chapter and for that, I am so grateful.”

Big Hits and New Tours Directed by visionary Tony®-winner Diane Paulus and based on the critically-acclaimed Academy Award® winning film, Finding Neverland tells the incredible story behind one of the world’s most beloved characters, Peter Pan. Spellbound by the boys’ enchanting make-believe adventures, he sets out to write a play that will astound London theatergoers. With a little bit of pixie dust and a lot of faith, Barrie takes this monumental leap, leaving his old world behind for Neverland, where nothing is impossible and the wonder of childhood lasts forever. The magic of Barrie’s classic tale springs spectacularly to life in this heartwarming theatrical event. Finding Neverland is “far and away the best musical of the year!” (NPR).
