Theatre Etiquette

• Be sure to use the restroom before the show! You don’t want to miss any of the action. • Turn your cell phones off. • Keep your feet off the back of the seats. • Photography is never allowed! • It is standard etiquette to applaud at the end of the show. Not only are you applauding for the performers, but also the hard work that everyone has put in behind the scenes! • Above all, the theatre is truly a special place. Unlike movies or TV, what you see onstage is happening right before your eyes. The performers are giving their all, so it’s important that you give them your full attention.

Thank you and enjoy the show! 2 Southbridge Street Worcester, MA 01608 TheHanoverTheatre.org Worcester Center for Performing Arts, a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, owns and operates The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory for the Performing Arts. Characters Percy Jackson: a demigod, the son of the mortal Sally Jackson and the Greek god Poseidon. He has ADHD and is living with dyslexia. He is described as "changeable like the sea" and hard to predict. Percy's "powers" start small and develop as the show proceeds. Grover: Percy's best and only friend in the world Mr. D (Dionysus): the irritable director of Camp Half-Blood and the god of wine. His father, Zeus, has sentenced him to centuries of servitude at Camp Half-Blood for bad behavior. Annabeth: Percy's friend and sometimes competitor Luke: demigod, and the son of Hermes who is introduced as the friendly head counselor of the Hermes cabin Sally: Percy’s mom Chiron: an immortal Centaur Clarisse: daughter of Ares

The Story Behind the Show The Man Behind "The Lightning Thief" The musical you are about to see is based off the 2005 book written by Rick Riordan. Development for "The Lightning Thief" began when author Rick Riordan made up stories for his son who had ADHD and dyslexia. His son had been studying Greek mythology in second grade and asked that his father come up with bedtime stories based on Greek myths. Riordan had been a Greek mythology teacher in middle school for Author Rick Riordon many years and was able to remember enough stories to share with his son. Soon Riordan ran out of myths and his son requested that Riordan make new ones using the characters from Greek myths with a new twist. Riordan created the fictional character Percy Jackson and his travels across the United States to recover Zeus's lightning bolt. After Riordan finished telling the story his son asked that his dad write a book based on Percy's adventures, and he did.

Journey to the Stage "The Lightning Thief" stage show wasn’t always going to be a musical, and Percy likely won’t strike many as the type of character who would sing, or even see a musical. Percy’s sarcastic, wry sense of humor, for example, may not work well with the big, emotional ballads stage musicals usually go for. So composer-lyricist Rob Rokicki set out to make the music more rock-oriented, with specific instruments paired to each of the main characters. Percy gets an electric guitar sound, while Grover, Percy’s happy-go-lucky satyr friend, is backed by an acoustic guitar.

Intermission Percy Jackson discovers he is not completely human. He is part god or a demigod. Test your knowledge by drawing a line connecting each Greek mythology character with what they represent! A. One-eyed giant 1. ARES B. Avenging spirits controlled by Hades 2. ATHENA C. The fierce god of war 3. CENTAUR D. Son of Zeus, a mortal hero 4. CYCLOPS 5. FURIES

E. Mythical creature with head and torso of a man and body of a horse

6. HADES

F. The Goddess of wisdom and arts

7. HERCULES

G. Monster with body of a man and head and tail of a bull

8. MEDUSA 9. MINOTAUR 10. POSEIDON

H. A Gorgon sister who bragged about her beauty and was turned into a monster by Athena. Her hair is made of snakes. I. God of the underworld and brother to Poseidon and Zeus J. God of the sea, brother of Zeus and Hades and father of Percy Jackson

Activities

Your Turn! Create your own Camp Half-Blood!

Percy goes to Camp Half-Blood and learns more about the Greek gods and goddesses than he ever thought possible. Take a crack at creating your god or goddess, think about what events would take place if you and your friends were attending Camp Half-Blood. Think about what powers you created for your god or goddess and what activities would be useful for teaching people to use those powers?

Design a poster for your own Camp Half-Blood

Get creative and design a poster. Use this space to sketch out some ideas. Make a schedule of events for one day at the camp. If you could have one of the gods or goddesses in Greek mythology visit your camp, who would it be?
