A NOTE ABOUT THE SHOW There once was a steadfast rule amongst writers of musicals. You had to start your show with a bang. That hardly sounds like the opening to Oklahoma! “We open the show on a very rather quiet note,” the late Jay Blackton, who was Oklahoma!’s original conductor once noted. “Just this one cowboy comes out to sing to this elderly lady who’s sitting in a rocking chair. And a lot of people were a little concerned that it was a rather slow, unexciting opening.” After such a huge box office success, it was clear that Rodgers and Hammerstein had struck a chord with the theater-going public. While they weren’t necessarily out to revolutionize the American musical, they were interested in melding the elements of story, song and dance in a more integrated way. Before Oklahoma!, most musicals had been haphazard affairs, where the songs were only loosely related to the plot. Oklahoma! opened a new chapter in the way shows were written, designed and produced and ushered in the Golden Age of American Musical Theatre where audiences were not only entertained, but changed by the stories being told. Although Oklahoma! has a significant place in musical theatre history, it also plays an unfortunate role in the whitewashing of American history. The farmers and cowmen of the show may sometimes be at odds, but their collisions are mild compared with the cataclysmic conflict left offstage — the foundational story of the Native American Territory where the show takes place. Many of the territory’s Native American residents had been forced there by Andrew Jackson’s Indian Removal Act, which mandated the evacuation of Native Americans from their ancestral homes at bayonet-point. Some 4,000 of the 16,000 Cherokees who were forced to migrate to Oklahoma from Georgia along the notorious 1,200-mile-long Trail of Tears in 1838–39 died along the way. One would never guess from Oklahoma! that its setting, outside the town of Claremore, is just 60 miles from Tahlequah, the capital of the transplanted and decimated Cherokee Nation. Nor would you know that white settlers like Curly were able to obtain Indian territory because Congress abolished tribal land ownership in 1887, less than 20 years before the show takes place. Land Acknowledgement We, The Hanover Theatre & Conservatory, want to acknowledge the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Nipmuc Nation on which we are working and performing today in Worcester, MA. Indigenous people have been talked about in the past tense and the struggles they face have been referred to in the past tense as well. It is easier to deny Indigenous people their rights if we historicize their struggles and simply pretend they don’t exist. We want to take this opportunity to acknowledge the systems of oppression that have dispossessed Indigenous people of their lands and denied their rights to self-determination. This sort of acknowledgement is essential to human rights work across the world. It is essential to our work of honoring stories that explore the human experience.

The Hanover Theatre Conservatory Teen Youth Summer Program is a 3-week musical theatre intensive with classes and rehearsals that culminate in a full production.
