DIRECTOR’S NOTE

The apocalypse cometh. Between climate change, wealth disparity, pandemic illness and other nefarious forces, we teeter on the brink of catastrophe. It seems to me that on the other side we may just return to a barbaric tribalism reminiscent of the Scotland depicted in Shakespeare’s Macbeth. And yet, our humanity will remain unchanged: personal loss will leave voids that cannot be filled; power will corrupt absolutely; and troops of players will find time and place to hold up the mirror, as ‘twere, to nature.

Thank you for joining us. Please lean in and experience Macbeth.

Bubble bubble, Livy Scanlon

SYNOPSIS

At top of show, two players discover the dark, abandoned theater and signal the ensemble to join them. When the action of the play begins, three witches appear and plan to confront Macbeth after the war waging in Scotland comes to an end.

The witches vanish and we move to a military camp. Duncan, King of Scotland, learns Macbeth has defeated both the rebel Macdonwald and the treasonous Thane of Cawdor. Duncan celebrates the victories, ordering Cawdor’s execution and bestowing his title upon Macbeth.

Across the battlefield, Macbeth encounters his friend and comrade, Banquo. The witches appear and prophesy that Macbeth will become Thane of Cawdor and King of Scotland, while Banquo will beget a line of kings. The witches vanish as Lennox and Ross arrive on Duncan’s behalf.

Back at the camp, Duncan announces that his son, Malcolm, will become King, then invites the group to Macbeth’s castle to celebrate. Left alone with his thoughts, Macbeth acknowledges that Malcolm stands in the way of the prophecy that Macbeth himself will wear the crown. Ahead of traveling home, Macbeth writes to his wife about all that has transpired.

Lady Macbeth desires the kingship for her husband. When Macbeth arrives, she makes her intentions clear, overriding his doubts and persuading him to kill Duncan that very night by framing his guards. When Duncan’s body is discovered the next morning, Malcolm flees to England in fear for his own life.

Macbeth assumes the kingship. Aware of the witches’ prophecies, Banquo suspects Macbeth of foul play. Meanwhile, Macbeth hires a murderer to kill Banquo and his son Fleance, as Macbeth fears the witches’ prophecy that Banquo’s heirs will seize the throne. The murderer ambushes Banquo en route to a royal feast. Two of the witches raise Banquo’s spirit from his body, sending the specter to haunt Macbeth.

At the feast, Banquo’s ghost appears. Macbeth raves, startling his guests. Lady Macbeth tries to neutralize the damage, but Macbeth’s kingship has already incited resistance from his subjects, including Macduff, who declined his invitation to the evening’s festivities. After the ghost and guests leave, Macbeth resolves to visit the witches for more information.

The eldest of the witches regales the younger two for conjuring Banquo’s spirit without her consent, then prepares her sisters and their sprites for the imminent encounter with Macbeth. Meanwhile, the Scottish nobles reveal that Macduff has traveled to England to visit Malcolm and ask for England’s help in overthrowing “the tyrant” Macbeth.

When Macbeth visits the witches, a series of spirits possesses them, conjuring more prophecies: first, that Macbeth must beware Macduff; second, that Macbeth cannot be harmed by any “man of woman born”; and third, that Macbeth will be safe until Birnam Forest comes to his castle. Macbeth is relieved: he knows all men

SYNOPSIS

are born of women and that forests cannot move. For added assurance, he orders Macduff’s castle at Fife be seized and, most cruelly, that Lady Macduff and her baby be murdered.

In England, Macduff proves his loyalty to a dubious Malcolm when their allies arrive. Malcolm reveals England has agreed to help overthrow Macbeth. Ross delivers the devastating news of Fife’s demise. Macduff vows to avenge his family and save Scottland by killing Macbeth.

Lady Macbeth, meanwhile, has descended into madness. As Macbeth prepares for battle, she kills herself. Despite his despair, he fortifies his castle, certain the witches’ visions guarantee his invincibility. Seyton soon reports, however, the English army is advancing, shielded with branches cut from Birnam Wood, fulfilling half of the witches’ prophecy.

The allied forces overwhelm Macbeth’s castle, which Macduff breaches in search of a final showdown. As they fight, Macduff reveals he was not “of woman born” but rather “from his mother’s womb untimely ripped” -- that is, delivered by cesarean section. Macbeth is doomed and Macduff lands a fatal blow. Malcolm and allies arrive. They acknowledge Malcolm as the rightful King of Scotland. He declares his benevolent intentions for the country and invites all to his coronation. Left behind and bleeding out, Macbeth dies alone.
