Dear Friends,

It’s only been four and a half years since The Hanover Theatre’s grand opening in March 2008, and in that short time we’ve come such a long way. Pollstar recognizes us among the top fifty theatres worldwide for number of audience reached; our Broadway series has expanded to a greater number of performances and bigger shows; our subscriptions and memberships have both increased more than 20% in the past year alone. We have built a solid reputation as one of central Massachusetts’ premier cultural institutions, and we’ve become an integral part of our city’s ever more vibrant downtown.

Even though we’re such a young organization, it’s important for us to take the long view – to build a strong foundation that will ensure that The Hanover Theatre remains a favorite destination for generations to come. The hallmark of our success has been our ability to offer a world-class experience – not only in the quality of performances on our stage, but also in each step of a visitor’s interaction with the theatre. It begins with hearing about a performance and buying a ticket on our website or box office, to being greeted by our lobby concierge and ushers, to a follow-up email soliciting feedback after a performance, we aim to keep our customer service sharp. A significant part of that world-class experience is in the beauty and grandeur of our historic theatre. We must protect and preserve the architecture that we so carefully restored, in order to continue to offer that same level of quality in the future. With the printing of this report and our fourth Annual Meeting in November 2012, we are formally launching the Securing the Future capital campaign, with a $5 million fundraising goal to provide for the long-term care and preservation of the theatre. To date we’ve secured approximately just over half that amount, through the generosity of the foundations, corporations and individuals recognized on these pages. Over the next eighteen months we intend to accelerate the now public campaign to reach our goal. Another important new initiative this fall is our switch to renewable energy sources. Beginning in October 2012, approximately 80% of the theatre’s electricity is being generated by a 5-acre solar farm in Leicester, Massachusetts, built specifically for us. We’re the first performing arts center in the country to utilize solar energy for the majority of its power needs, and we hope that many others will follow. This report shows another year “in the black” – despite a challenging economic climate – and affirms our commitment to fiscal responsibility and long-term strategic planning. We’re proud of that, and of all that goes on behind the scenes, but most of all we’re proud to be a part of the new Worcester, a city on the move. Sincerely yours,

Protecting an Important Cultural Landmark Delivering world-class performances is certainly a top priority at The Hanover Theatre. Yet as stewards of a historic venue, ongoing preservation and maintenance is a constant area of focus for our Board of Directors and staff. It is the primary motivation behind the Securing the Future capital campaign that aims to protect this architectural gem for future generations.

About Theatre Architect Thomas Lamb Thomas Lamb became one of the most sought-after designers of vaudeville theatres and movie palaces in the country during their heyday in the 1910’s and 1920’s. He was responsible for at least 300 theatres in North America and designed many of the largest. Among his best known theatres are the 2,500 seat Opera House in Boston, the 5,300 seat Capitol Theatre in NYC, the Loew’s Midland Theatre in Kansas City and the San Francisco Fox Theatre.

Our concierge and ushers will attest to the fact that many first time visitors marvel at the beauty of our theatre and want to know more about its past. Its beauty is integral to the theatergoing experience and we know that the decisions we make today to secure its future are critical to our long-term success as a premier cultural institution. We are reminded of the theatre’s historical importance when we read architectural historian Susan Ceccacci’s findings, outlined in the Registry of Historic Places criteria submitted in preparation for the building’s last restoration project: The former Poli Palace Theatre is Worcester’s oldest and finest vaudeville and motion picture theatre of the large and elaborate type built across the United States during the nation’s theatrebuilding heyday of the 1910’s and 1920’s. It is architecturally significant as the most deluxe example of its type and period in the city. No other Worcester theatre of this period, or of the “palace” theatre type, is of the same high level of architectural quality or is finished throughout with such high quality materials.

The theatre is also significant as an example of the work of the internationally known theatre architect, Thomas Lamb. Its sense of space, proportions, lines, detailing, and material evoke emotion and make the visitor feel that he is a participant in the spectacle that is the architecture.

Securing the Future Capital Campaign Last year the theatre continued to lay the groundwork for the Securing the Future capital campaign to secure funds to ensure the ongoing preservation and maintenance of our historic facility. To date $2,536,022;

The theatre has delivered on its promises to its Founding Members, contributors and the community at large. The Hanover Theatre has enjoyed great success since its opening in March 2008 – more than 800,000 people have come through our doors and we have catalyzed revitalization in downtown Worcester. We have been fiscally responsible, operating in the black after all debt service. We have earned the respect and confidence of our stakeholders, who share our pride at making a real difference in the rebirth of our city.

51% of a $5 million goal has been realized with contributions from local foundations, businesses and individuals. In addition a planned giving program is underway to raise another $2 million to establish an endowment fund. The campaign team has formed an Ambassadors Circle to engage individual supporters who will assist in spreading the word as well as provide momentum for the public phase of the campaign that will launch in November 2012.

The theatre must protect the community’s investment. Undeniably, the high caliber of the experience we deliver is inextricably linked to the beauty and perfection of the historic theatre itself. We must do better than simple “upkeep” of the theatre – we must preserve and care for it like the asset that it is. In addition, the very definition of a world-class venue will evolve, and we must evolve with it, embracing changing technologies and trends.

The theatre must re-invest in our facility, keeping standards high and our venue up to date. Other theatres of our size and scope spend $250,000 or more annually to maintain and preserve their historic venues. Our current level of debt service allows us to spend only a small fraction of this amount. As our newlyrestored theatre ages our annual re-investment into the facility must grow, and we must significantly reduce or eliminate our debt service, so that we may leverage our success to protect our future.

The Securing the Future capital campaign is the answer. Reaching our $5 million goal through a successful Securing the Future capital campaign will redirect more than $350,000 in the theatre’s annual operating budget, from servicing construction debt to creating a Preservation Fund for ongoing upkeep and maintenance of our historic venue.

Building the New Worcester

Many have called The Hanover Theatre a catalyst for the rebirth of downtown Worcester. Welcoming over 180,000 visitors annually, it has had significant economic impact and is beginning to create a vibrant cultural destination in central Massachusetts. Because of the theatre’s success, investment in the downtown has renewed momentum. The Worcester Business Development Corporation’s plan for a 30 acre Theatre District is underway with the purchase

Our Volunteers Invaluable Support The level of commitment and quality of service by this exceptional group of volunteers contribute significantly to our day-to-day operation. About our Volunteers Among our 200 plus volunteers there are retired and active students, teachers, principals, doctors, nurses, retail associates, managers, travel agents, small business owners, business associates and executives. These individuals come from all walks of life and range from 18-79 years of age. They all commit to a yearly training program in August and to working two or more shows each month throughout the season. Our volunteers are invaluable to our staff and provide excellent service to our patrons.

Volunteer of the Year Charlene Baron The Hanover Theatreâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2012 Volunteer of the Year, Charlene Baron, has been volunteering since the 2008 inaugural season. She is a team leader as well as a member of the volunteer social committee. Over the last year, Charlene has made use of her photography background and computer skills to help advance the communication and scheduling of our volunteers. She has made a photo guide of all volunteers and staff in order to help newcomers get to know their co-workers. Charlene also helped transition the theatre from an Excel-based scheduling system to online scheduling software. Many of the volunteers needed help adjusting to the new system and Charlene was always there to lend a hand. She is a tremendous asset to the theatre and is always going above and beyond to help her peers. In addition, Charlene is always sure to have her camera handy to capture memorable photos for our annual volunteer calendar! She also started a Facebook page where volunteers can make plans to meet and mingle outside of the theatre! Thank you to Charlene for promoting communication, familiarity, technology, and capturing the wonderful moments we share all year long!

Curator Don Phipps, resident organist, Len Beyersdorfer (pictured above), and organ team members Bruce Hager and John Phipps continue to give tirelessly of their time and talent to maintain and showcase the magnificent Mighty Wurlitzer Organ. Last year 34 pre-show concerts on the organ featured Len Beyersdorfer, supported by his team of behind the scenes helpers. We’d like to acknowledge a grant of $4,980 by the ATOS (American Theatre Organ Society) Endowment Fund for funding our organ project which will have a lasting impact on the preservation and presentation of the theatre pipe organ as a historic American instrument.

Creating Community Partnerships Without the initial support and engagement of many different sectors of our community, The Hanover Theatre would not be part of Worcester’s cultural landscape today. That spirit of collaboration continues to this day as we work to provide a forum for other nonprofits in the community to raise funds and awareness. Whether through co-promoting a show or partnering to present an Access Hanover Lyceum Series event, we willingly engage the nonprofit community and actively seek their involvement.

In addition, a deep sense of community runs throughout our organization. It can be found among our volunteers with their weekly contributions of food items to support the South High School Food Pantry. Principal Maureen Bienenda (also a theatre volunteer) claims that without the support of our volunteers this important service to underserved students at South High could not be sustained. The Hanover Theatre donated more than $12,256 in complimentary tickets during the 2011-2012 season to more than 55 greater Worcester nonprofit organizations.

A collaborative effort between The Hanover Theatre and Preservation Worcester, the program offered a lively multimedia look at Worcester movie theatres during the early-mid-20th century heyday of the American “palace” theatre. As Worcester’s largest and finest palace theatre, The Hanover Theatre proved to be the perfect setting for the program – attracting an audience of more than 200. Our joint effort highlighted both the social history and the architecture of one of the city’s most important buildings, while also enabling each organization to reach new audiences.”

Youth Programs Provide Access to the Performing Arts

An exciting new educational initiative this past year has been the Goddard Scholars Innovation Program. The theatre partnered with Sullivan Middle School’s Goddard Scholars Academy to provide 96 seventh and eighth graders critical skills that will prepare them for college and the 21st century workplace. Our director of education, Meghan Patrick, visited the school and hosted students at the theatre for tours, performances, lectures, and workshops on acting and public speaking, with opportunities to test speaking skills before a live audience. This new educational initiative was spurred in 2010 by Massachusetts educational legislation that paved the way for local public school districts and the Massachusetts Department of Education to create new learning communities referred to as Innovation Schools. One of the components of this legislation requires Innovation Schools to form lasting community partnerships. The Hanover Theatre is delighted to be such a partner and looks forward to building on this special relationship.

The long-range goal of the Access to the Arts program is to build a culturally rich community accessible to all. To that end the theatre reaches out to the next generation of theatregoers with a variety of programs and opportunities that cultivate long-term involvement and demand for the arts. The theatre presented nine school matinees to 13,338 students last year. More than 1,500 underserved children and families experienced A Christmas Carol and The Nutcracker during the holiday season through our partnership with the United Way of Central Massachusetts. Special performances and lectures were made accessible to students, educators and families through our collaboration with the Worcester Public Schools. Last year the theatre participated in the Instrumental Partners program with WICN and WPS making musical instruments accessible to students who otherwise could not afford them.

On May 10th the theatre held its annual Franklin Square Society (FSS) Recognition Night, hosted by benefactor Mary C. DeFeudis. The evening included a cocktail reception on the Promenade followed by a performance of the Paul Taylor Dance Company, sponsored by the College of the Holy Cross. This yearly event is an opportunity to formally acknowledge the commitment of our FSS members and the leadership role they play in building and sustaining our nonprofit organization. Their on-going support has been unmatched and an important source of operational funds for the theatre.

Strengthening our Bond with the College Community The Hanover Theatre’s College Partners Program, established in 2008 prior to the theatre’s opening, has developed over the last four years with each college utilizing the theatre in ways that best serve their institutional objectives. Last season Nichols College, Holy Cross and UMASS Medical School committed to sponsoring performances and lectures which positively showcased their institutions and provided additional advantages for alumni and staff; Anna Marie College and Becker College held graduation ceremonies; Assumption College’s theatrical production, Seussical, was a family-friendly addition to our spring lineup.
