CONSERVATORY Youth Acting Company presents

June 25 & 26 at 7 PM June 27 at 2 PM at the BrickBox Theater Worcester, MA

About the Show The idea for Urinetown first came to Greg Kotis during a poorly planned trip to Europe in 1995. He ran out of money almost immediately and the trip devolved into a grim test of endurance, where the defining questions changed from “Am I getting enough culture?” and “How do I really feel about life?” to simply “How can I not spend any money until I go home?” The answer involved sleeping in train stations, eating cheap foods, and avoiding going to the bathroom as much as possible since public bathrooms in Europe are pay-per-use. On a cold and rainy afternoon in Paris, while Kotis was trying to determine how badly he needed to “go,” the notion of a city where all public amenities were controlled by a single malevolent, monopolizing corporation came to him. Not only would the corporation control all the public bathrooms, but it would also ensure the prohibition of private toilets, thus guaranteeing a steady flow of customers to its overpriced comfort stations. With its wealth and influence on the rise, it would pay off politicians and the police, outlaw going in the bushes and employ all tools of persuasion to maintain its hammerlock on power. At its head would be an evil capitalist genius. But would he really be so evil? For the world he was controlling was suffering from a nearly uncontrollable ecological disaster—a drought that, at the beginning of our story, had already entered its twentieth year. The notion seemed like a patently awful one, grand and ridiculous, a career ending embarrassment. And yet, at its core, it would also be a grand, ridiculous reflection of the world as we know it to be, complete with rich and poor, the powerful and the powerless, a government controlled by industry and an industry that exists apart from and above us all. And driving it all would be the disaster, in this case the drought, a fact that trumped all the other facts: the love, the rage, the greed, everything. It would be a musical, yes, a very big musical, and it would be called Urinetown.

URINETOWN is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.MTIShows.com

The Hanover Theatre Youth Acting Company is one of the conservatory’s resident performance companies and was created to give young, capable actors performance opportunities throughout the year. The company is comprised of students between the ages of 14 and 19. Actors are selected for this company by invitation only. We aim to expand a young performer’s horizons by providing them with the opportunity to work with three different directors, in three or more spaces while being exposed to three different styles of performance, all in a single season.

COVID-19 Notice: Audience members are required to wear masks throughout the performance. All performers are fully vaccinated or have received a negative COVID-19 test result prior to performing.

Worcester Center for Performing Arts is a registered not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, which owns and operates The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory for the Performing Arts.

Thomas Malthus, deceased (Referenced) was a famous 18th-century British economist known for population growth philosophies. Malthus theorized that populations would continue expanding until growth is stopped or reversed by disease, famine, war, or calamity. He is also known for developing an exponential formula used to forecast population growth, which is currently known as the Malthusian growth model. Famous naturalist Charles Darwin partially based his natural selection theory on Malthus' analysis. page 7
