Welcome

Over the last two years, our conservatory has grown in leaps and bounds, tripling our course offerings and doubling our faculty of master teaching artists. We are so proud to be offering world-class performing arts education in the heart of Worcester’s downtown at a time when we need the arts more than ever. As I observe our students, I am amazed by the wealth of talent and dedication they bring to the classroom. I am encouraged by parents who are exposing their toddlers and youngsters to the arts and I am inspired by the adult students who continue to pursue their passions. As we approach the second anniversary of the conservatory’s opening, we continue our dedication to cultivating individual attention, igniting creativity and inspiring confidence through arts education. Prerequisite: 1 year Adult Improv or permission from instructor Students with prior improvisation experience work on building a toolbox of techniques to successfully create rich characters, heighten relationships, tackle group scenes and explore the environment and given circumstances. A course allowing adult theatre enthusiasts to explore acting exercises as well as comedic and dramatic scene work. You’re never too old to step into the spotlight! This course is an introduction to audio, intended for the novice who wishes to learn basic audio terminology, functionality of component, design, set up and operation of a basic sound system. iPad required for this class. Intro to Lighting (Teens & Adults)

Students are introduced to the vast array of lighting instruments available today and the role each type of fixture plays in entertainment lighting. Atmospheric effects, fixture accessories and expendables (gels and patterns) will also be explored in how they can augment the use of the lighting element. Dimming, control and safety protocols for hang and focus will also be reviewed. 8” adjustable (Crescent) wrench required. Whether you’re a beginner or just want to brush up on your skills, this fun and vibrant class is for you. Tap is an exciting and challenging art form that developed out of African polyrhythms in America’s Jazz Age. Elements of classic and Broadway-style tap will be taught. The form’s musicality and rich percussive traditions are emphasized through fundamental skills and increasingly intricate progressions. Tap shoes required. Presented by Crocodile River Music, this class will give students the opportunity to move their bodies to the fun and high energy music of West Africa. They will learn principles of rhythm, fundamental movements and the ancient stories behind the traditional dances and rhythms of Mali. Every class is accompanied by live drums! Children explore characters, relationships and plot by telling stories from a variety of cultures and genres. Movement, expression and speech are developed as storytelling tools. Students practice listening and responding in character and begin to identify specific details of a performance. Being on stage may garner applause, but it’s what happens behind the scenes that truly creates magic in theatre. Students will be introduced to the many forms of stage craft (stage management, lighting, sound, costuming, etc.) and learn how they all connect to create one magnificent production. Learn the ins and outs of being a stage manager and just how important their role is behind the scenes. Students will learn how to properly record blocking, run rehearsals and tech, assemble a prompt binder, review safety skills and create paperwork and report templates. Makeup intended for use in the theater is vastly different from makeup that you might wear out and about or even for a special occasion. Students will learn real world makeup techniques that they can use for the rest of their lives. Stage and special effects makeup will be explored.

Stage Makeup II (Grades 8-12)

Prerequisite: Stage Makeup I Students will delve deeper into stage makeup in relation to characters, special effects and prosthetics. New techniques, tools and products will be used to expand a student’s knowledge and experience in the world of stage makeup. Students are responsible for providing personal makeup and tools. Fashion for the Theatre: Sewing 101 (Ages 8-18)

Intended for designers who want to learn more about sketching and sewing, and have some sewing experience. Using machine and hand sewing, students will create a 3-dimensional “build out” fashion illustration using a variety of fabrics and trims, as it relates to costume design, and instruction on how to use the different mediums in their design. Students will enhance their skills and bring home a machine sewn project and a small hand sewn project based on their built out sketch. Sewing Fashion Couture: Large Form (Ages 10-18)

Perfect for designers with basic sewing knowledge who want to design and sew a theatre inspired couture design on a large/life size fashion form. Students will be introduced to the history of couture costume fashion design in the theatre and create their own inspired design on a professional dress form. Loose sketching, use of fabrics, color and trims in design, draping, pinning, measuring, machine and hand sewing, and how to read and use a pattern will be taught. Students will be introduced to fashion illustration as it relates to costume design, and how to use different mediums. Students will bring their life-size costume design to life and leave the class with their sketches and completed form. Create professional stage makeup for a variety of characters and roles while gaining knowledge of makeup materials, tools and techniques. Students are responsible for providing personal makeup and tools including a Ben Nye Theatrical Crème Personal Kit in the appropriate skin tone. Music Together® is a music and movement curriculum based on research that shows children learn best from active caregivers and a non-performance based musical environment. Families receive a songbook and CDs (Winter session 2019 Song Collection: Drums / Spring session 2019 Song Collection: Tambourine) with the music learned in class so you can continue nurturing your child’s imaginative growth at home. Set the foundation for future musical study, or simply a great love of music. Youth Summer Program

11th annual Youth Summer Program | Offering programming for ages 6-18 MARK YOUR CALENDAR! YSP registration opens February 22 at 10am to the public. Children’s Program

(Entering grades 1-3) Two Weeks: June 24th – July 5th (no classes on July 4) Monday - Friday, 9AM - 3 PM The children’s program offers students opportunities to learn and explore in the world of musical theatre. Daily classes feature theatre games, dance combinations, music appreciation, singing, visual arts and much, much more. A showcase of student work will be held on the final day of the program. Tuition: $650 Registration opens Feb 22. Enrolled conservatory students receive early registration access on Feb 21.

Pre-Teen Musical Theatre Intensive

(Entering grades 4-8) Two Weeks: July 29 – August 10 Monday - Friday, 9AM - 3 PM Junior performance will be presented on Saturday, August 10. A great fit for students looking for focused, fast-paced theatre training. The pre-teen program introduces students to the joy of participating in a show. Students work intensely with a director, choreographer and music director over the course of two weeks to perform a junior production of a Broadway show. Broadway Junior musicals are condensed, author-approved versions of classic musicals. Students will attend daily classes where material from the show will be used to teach them skills in areas of music, drama and dance. Performances of a 60-minute Broadway Tuition: $750 Registration opens Feb 22. Enrolled conservatory students receive early registration access on Feb 21.

Teen Musical Theatre Intensive

(Entering grades 9-12 and incoming college freshmen) Three Weeks, Monday - Friday, 9AM - 3 PM Session I: July 8 – July 27 Performances will be presented on July 26 & 27 Session II: July 29 – August 17 Performances will be presented on August 16 & 17 Our teen program, now in its 11th year, offers students is designed for students seeking a pre-professional experience. Teens attend daily morning classes focusing on music, drama and dance as well as afternoon rehearsals for a final production. Two sessions will be offered. Students will be cast in and present three performances of a full-scale Broadway musical at the end of each session on The Hanover Theatre’s mainstage. Tuition: $950

Partners in Education: Professional Development Workshops for Educators

Kennedy Center Partners in Education

In 2018, The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory was selected to participate in the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts’ Partners in Education Program, a nationally recognized program designed to help arts organizations develop and expand education partnerships with local school systems. It is rooted in the belief that supporting the professional learning of teachers is an essential component of promoting the inclusion of arts in education.

TEAMWORK THROUGH DANCE: BUILDING AN INCLUSIVE CLASSROOM

Workshop Leader: Eric Johnson Intended for teachers of grades K-2 Collaboration is one of the most important skills teachers emphasize to build community, include students with a diverse range of abilities and needs, and prepare them for the world of work. In this workshop, explore how to build cooperative teamwork by learning to lead classroom-tested, playful, creative movement activities that teach students to take turns, listen carefully, read a partner's non-verbal cues, and speak in response. Throughout the workshop observe the modeling of an easy, repeatable classroom management system which creates a calm, cooperative environment for learning. ACTING RIGHT: DRAMA AS A CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT STRATEGY Workshop Leader: Sean Layne Intended for teachers of grades K-8 Sean Layne has taken the foundational elements of acting such as concentration, cooperation, and collaboration and created a structured process, which can become the basis for effective classroom management every day. This engaging step-by-step approach empowers students to take ownership of and be responsible for their own behavior. In this workshop, teachers learn how to help students build the skills necessary to establish a sense of self-control, accountability and teambuilding in their classroom. BUILDING READING COMPREHENSION THROUGH SOUND AND RHYTHM

Workshop Leader: Imani Gonzalez Intended for teachers of grades 1-5 Enhance student learning by using sound and rhythm to explore ways to help students develop reading comprehension strategies and make connections between music and language. Teachers are guided through a process to help students create a Soundscape, a way to retell the story that connects students to the story’s tone, mood, setting, and the characters’culture(s). This learning process will help students attend to sensory images, use questioning strategies, respond to inference, and determine importance which helps students develop a better understanding of the text. Students will develop listening skills through collaboration, build interpretation and oral presentation skills through communication, and improve reading fluency through creativity. See how music can make full use of these skills through students’ aural, visual, analytical, creative and social intelligences. Master Classes Conservatory students participate in a Musical Theatre Audition Master Class with Glinda and Scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz.

Master Classes As a benefit of enrolling at the conservatory, students receive exclusive access to master classes with visiting artists. Please check our website for details regarding possible master classes with the following national touring Broadway productions and more in our 2018-2019 season.

Payment may be made in full at the time of registration, or you may call the box office to arrange for two 50% payments. The Hanover Theatre Conservatory (THTC) will work with families in need of additional payment installments, but this option will incur a 5% fee. Late or declined payments will incur an additional $20 service fee per month. If tuition is not settled by the end of the semester, students will not be permitted to perform in any end of year performances.

Withdrawals & Refunds

THTC has a final sale policy for all ticket purchases, tuition payments and fees. No refunds are issued for missed classes, schedule changes, class transfers, student withdrawals or students under disciplinary action. Requests to transfer or withdraw from classes due to extenuating circumstances must be submitted in writing to the conservatory for review and consideration of revised enrollment or pro-rated tuition credits. Approved tuition credits are not guaranteed and may be used for future classes only. Tuition credits cannot be used for tickets or other merchandise. Tuition credits expire if not used by the end of the following semester.

Cancellations & Makeup Classes

Every effort is made to operate classes on regularly scheduled days and times in order to avoid cancellations. Cancellations due to weather will be listed on the homepage of the theatre’s website at TheHanoverTheatre. org. A maximum of two weather-related cancellations will be made up per course. for other reasons will be rescheduled without limitation. If students are unable to attend the makeup date, special arrangements can be made with administration to attend another group class in that same semester. THTC reserves the right to assign substitute teachers for group or private lessons without advance notification to parents and students.

Students and parents (when applicable) must agree to The Hanover Theatre Conservatory policies and procedures in order to enroll in a class. A complete list can be found at TheHanoverTheatre.org/conservatory.

Dress code

Theatre & Music: Please wear clothing that is comfortable to move in and free of graphics and text. No dresses or skirts, please. Remove any jewelry that may hinder movement. For some classes with a musical theatre or dance focus, dance shoes may be required. See website for details. Technical Theatre & Design: Traditional technical theatre dress code requires black attire. Jewelry and loose-fitting clothing that pose a danger or hazard while working with technical and design equipment are prohibited. Dance: Proper dance attire and neatness are required for all dance classes. All dancers must have their hair secured back and away from their faces. Jewelry is not permitted. Appropriate and properly fitted footwear must be worn for each class. Additional dress codes vary by class and level. See website for details.
