Characters J. M. Barrie: The creator of the story "Peter Pan." He is a Scottish playwright who sees the world through the eyes of a child. Sylvia Llewelyn Davies: A widow with four children whose family inspires Barrie to write "Peter Pan." Mary Barrie: J.M. Barrie’s unhappy wife. Mrs. du Maurier: Sylvia's strict mother who dislikes Barrie. Charles Frohman: Barrie's friend and the director/producer of the acting company that Barrie writes plays for. Captain Hook: The classic villain from "Peter Pan" who comes to Barrie in a vision to convince him to add a villain to his show. Peter Llewelyn Davies: The third oldest of the Davies boys. He is heartbroken after losing his father. Peter is thoughtful and smart and although he is initially angry, he goes from 'not believing' to opening up and embracing the world of magic and play that Barrie presents to him. Michael Llewelyn Davies: The youngest of the Davies boys. He is the loudest and most confident in his actions and his statements. Jack Llewelyn Davies: The second oldest of the Davies boys. He is the naughtiest but even his mischief comes from a good heart. George Llewelyn Davies: The oldest of the Davies boys. George is most sensible and mature though still able to play and have fun. Lord Canaan: A wealthy and snobbish man who Frohman tries to get as another producer for the play. He ends up with Mary. Mr. Cromer: A grumpy yet lovable member of the acting troupe. Plays Michael in "Peter Pan". Mr. Henshaw: A self-absorbed yet friendly member of the acting troupe. Plays Nana in "Peter Pan". Peter Pan: The main character of the play, takes Sylvia to Neverland towards the end of the show. Porthos: Barrie's dog.

The Story Behind the Show The Man Behind Peter Pan The show you are about to see, Finding Neverland, tells the story behind the creation of the famous character named Peter Pan. The creator of the story "Peter Pan," playwright Sir James M. Barrie, never had his own children. However, he spent a great deal of time playing with the children of his good friends Sylvia and Arthur Llewelyn Davies. It was while writing and acting out skits for the Davies children that Barrie developed the characters and plot he would use in writing the play, “Peter Pan.” Flying to the Stage After Barrie first mentioned Peter Pan in a book in 1902, he perfected the character two years later in the full-length play, “Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up.” Despite the quality and originality of the piece, Barrie had a hard time getting it produced. Plays in 1904 usually did not have special effects like flying or major scene changes. Finally, English producer Charles Frohman agreed to produce the play. He cast one of England’s most popular actresses, Nina Boucicault, as Peter, with her brother Dion directing the first production. A perfectionist, he often had cast and crew rehearse up to 18 hours at a time. Even with its major technical requirements and unique plot and characters, the production was a great success throughout England and then in the United States in 1905. The Many Forms of Peter Pan Peter Pan has lived on in many forms. In 1911, Barrie turned his popular play into a novel. Peter Pan’s story has since been retold in numerous films, including the famous 1953 Walt Disney classic, then “Peter Pan” in 1924, Steven Spielberg’s “Hook” in 1992, “Peter Pan” in 2003 and “Pan” in 2015. The play was also performed live on national TV in 2014.
