As we get ready for our fall semester, I am reminded of what an exciting time this has been for The Hanover Theatre Conservatory for the Performing Arts. In our inaugural semester this past January, we were thrilled to welcome so many talented students into our new space. The conservatory was buzzing with actors, dancers, musicians and designers of all ages and abilities. True to our belief that education is a lifelong pursuit, we taught those as young as 2 months old and were inspired by our adult students who brought up to 72 years of wisdom and experience to the classroom. In addition to our theatre, music and design offerings, we were eager to expand our dance offerings this past spring, and welcomed Ballet Arts Worcester and their disciplined training into our organization. With our programs quickly growing, I am happy to announce the addition of two new studios currently in construction for the fall. With both 15 and 32-week class offerings, we feel that the 2017-2018 schedule has something for everyone. As you look through this course catalog, you’ll see new levels for our existing classes as well as the addition of some new and exciting offerings like Mommy & Me Dance, Playmaking, Stage Combat, Lighting & Sound Design, African Dance, College Audition Prep Class and much more! Payments Payment may be made in full at the time of registration, or you may call the box office to arrange for two 50% payments. The Hanover Theatre Conservatory will work with families in need of additional payment installments, but this option will incur a 5% fee. Cancellations & Make-Up Classes When the conservatory cancels classes, they will be rescheduled. The Hanover Theatre Conservatory reserves the right to assign substitute teachers for group or private lessons without advance notification to parents and students. Every effort is made to operate classes on regularly scheduled days and times in order to avoid cancellations. Absences are not eligible for make-ups.

Withdrawal & Refunds The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory for the Performing Arts has a final sale policy for all ticket purchases, tuition payments and fees. No refunds are issued for missed classes, schedule changes, class transfers, student withdrawals or students under disciplinary action. Requests to transfer or withdraw from classes must be submitted in writing to the conservatory for review and consideration to revise enrollment or allow pro-rated tuition credit. Approved tuition credits may be used for future classes only, and cannot be used for summer programs, tickets or other merchandise. Tuition credits expire if not used by the end of the following semester. Policies Students and parents (when applicable) must agree to The Hanover Theatre Conservatory policies and procedures in order to enroll in a class. Dress code Theatre & Music: Please wear clothing that is comfortable to move in and free of graphics and text. No dresses or skirts, please. Remove any jewelry that may hinder movement. For some classes with a musical theatre or dance focus, dance shoes may be required. Technical Theatre & Design: Traditional technical theatre dress code requires black attire. Jewelry and loose-fitting clothing that pose a danger or hazard while working with technical and design equipment are prohibited. Dance: Proper dance attire and neatness are required for all dance classes. All dancers must have their hair secured back and away from their faces. Jewelry is not permitted. Adult Acting I (Ages 18+) A course allowing adult theatre enthusiasts to explore acting exercises as well as comedic and dramatic scene work. You’re never too old to step into the spotlight! Costume Design I: Sewing Basics (Teens & Adults) Have dreams of being a costume designer? Maybe you just want to be able to sew the hem on that pair of pants! This class teaches students the basics of hand and machine sewing. Small sewing projects are used to practice your new skills. Students may be responsible for purchasing fabric and supplies. West African Dance (Teens & Adults) Presented in partnership with Crocodile River Music, students will move their bodies to the high energy music of West Africa. They’ll learn principles of rhythm, fundamental movements and the ancient stories behind the traditional dances and rhythms of Mali. Schedule: One 60 min. class/week Instructor: Crocodile River Music Times: Thursdays 7 PM – 8 PM Dates: September 14 – December 21 (15 Weeks) Tuition: $375 Zumba® (Ages 18+) The class that started the dance-fitness revolution and changed the way we look at a “workout” forever. Zumba® mixes low-intensity and high-intensity moves for an interval-style, calorie-burning dance fitness party. Once the Latin and world rhythms take over, you’ll see why Zumba® classes are often called “exercise in disguise.”

Adult Tap Beginner I (Ages 18+) Whether you’re a beginner or just want to brush up on your skills, this fun and vibrant class is for you. Tap is an exciting and challenging art form that developed out of African polyrhythms in America’s Jazz Age. Elements of classic and Broadway-style tap will be taught. The form’s musicality and rich percussive traditions are emphasized through fundamental skills. (Infants-age 5, with caregiver) Presented in partnership with Pakachoag Music School, children will bounce, sing, dance, jump, drum, tap, click, wiggle and gallop their way to the development of pitch, rhythm and musical awareness! Music Together® is a music and movement curriculum based on research that shows children learn best from active caregivers and a non-performance based musical environment. Families receive a “Fall Session Song Collection: Bongos” songbook and CDs with the music learned in class so you can continue nurturing your child’s imaginative growth at home. Set the foundation for future musical study, or simply a great love of music. PRIVATE LESSONS Private lessons in acting, voice and dance can be arranged with any of our teaching staff. These lessons can be arranged through Meghan Montaner, director of education, at 508.471.1793. Private Lesson Tuition $70/60 minutes or $35/30 minutes If a student needs to cancel a lesson, 24-hour written notice must be given. The student can then reschedule the lesson within the semester. If 24-hour notice is not given, or a student does not show up for a lesson, no make-up lesson will be given. Students will explore the techniques used to create the illusion of danger and the means by which we use violence to tell stories on stage and screen. Emphasis will be placed on safety, partnering and physicality. College Audition Prep (Grades 9 - 11) Every actor should be equipped with a few auditionready monologues in their back pocket! Learn how to pick the right monologues and showcase your widest range. Understand the distinctions among “classical,” “modern” and “contemporary” selections. Gain the tools to break a monologue down via essential questions about given circumstances, relationships, motivation, stakes, arcs and tactics. Investigate the choices that make an audition professional and memorable. This class arms you with the techniques you need to create compelling, quality, successful work.

Playmaking (Grades 4-7) Through the use of improvisation, ensemble work and universal themes, participants will learn to create their own play. In this community building class, students will use critical thinking skills, movement, writing and acting to guide their way to a completed piece by the end of the semester.

Teen Improv (Grades 8-12) Students with prior experience in improvisation work on building a toolbox of techniques to successfully create rich characters, heighten relationships, tackle group scenes and explore the environment and given circumstances.

Movement for the Actor (Grades 8-12) Do you find yourself wondering what to do with your body when you act? Discover the many ways to be responsive and physical in the moment. Connect to your body through an exploration of tried and true physical approaches including Viewpoints, Suzuki and Grotowski techniques. This a great pre-college course for dedicated student actors.

Students will be introduced to the many forms of stage craft (stage management, lighting, sound, costuming, etc.) and learn how they all connect to create one magnificent production. Stage Makeup II (Grades 8-12) Students will delve deeper into stage makeup in relation to characters and special effects makeup will be explored. New techniques, tools and products will be used to expand a student’s knowledge and experience in the world of stage makeup. Students are responsible for providing personal makeup and tools. Ballet Arts Worcester will present the 10th Anniversary production of the classical ballet, performed on The Hanover Theatre stage the live orchestra music of the Mass Symphony Orchestra. In addition to rehearsals, dancers cast in the production who are not enrolled in the conservatory will be required to enroll in the 10-week Ballet Clinic listed on page 14 of this catalog.

The 10th Annual Production of A Christmas Carol December 15 - 23, 2017 Auditions will be held in September, date and time to be announced in early August. For more information about auditions, visit TheHanoverTheatre.org or call 508.471.1761 beginning August 1; or join the theatre’s email list and watch for the audition announcement in July/August. Adult and youth roles available. All roles require singing and some movement; some roles require dance experience. The first rehearsal will be held on November 28. Rehearsals are 2 - 10 PM Tuesday through Friday and 11 AM - 7 PM Saturday and Sunday. Youth performers will not be called for all rehearsals and will not be asked to miss school other than for student matinee performances. Mommy & Me Dance (Ages 3-4) An introduction to dance for girls and boys. A fun, creative class where students learn to move with the music and enrich their coordination and listening skills. Introduction to ballet terminology, ballet barre exercises, center work and ballet combinations from the diagonal are included in this beginner class.

Beginner Pointe I* This class begins pointe work from the very beginning. Each student will learn the essences of the three quarter pointe and how it is vital to strong, safe, articulate training. Students will learn how to manage their posture and turnout which are major components to the training and education of pointe work. Students must be deemed ready for pointe work through an evaluation and recommendation of instructor/dance director. Development of improvised movement material is facilitated through a variety of creative explorations including body mapping through levels, shape and dynamic structure. West African Dance (Teens & Adults) Presented in partnership with Crocodile River Music, students will get the opportunity to move their bodies to the fun and high energy music of West Africa. They will learn principles of rhythm, fundamental movements and the ancient stories behind the traditional dances and rhythms of Mali. The dance classes will be accompanied by a mix of recorded popular West African music and occasional live drums. Youth Ballet Company

In partnership with Ballet Arts Worcester, The Youth Ballet Company is our resident youth company. The Company is comprised of students between the ages of 12 and 19. Students are distinguished by divisions: Apprentice, Junior and Senior Company. Only the topmost dancers are selected for this company by invitation only. Classes run on a 32 week schedule from September 10 - May 19. The Youth Ballet Company was created to give young, capable dancers a pre-professional experience for a professional dance lifestyle. This includes: • A rigorous schedule in dance training (up to 20 hours per week) • Attending rehearsals 3 to 4 times a week to learn numerous compositions in diverse styles of dance • Performing on stage with full energy, desire and commitment, sometimes twice in a day. • Scheduled master classes with the top most master teachers throughout the country • Inclusion in our Student Critic Program, providing students with complimentary tickets to 8 shows with post-show group discussions.
