Twenty-eight Harker students and six chaperones traveled to Japan for a 10-day visit as part of our Harker/Tamagawa International Program. Harker students were able to reunite and stay with their Tamagawa “buddies,” whom they had met and hosted during Tamagawa’s visit to Harker in March. “My host family was very nice and made me feel like I was at home away from home,” said Harker student Evan Sanders. “They didn't speak much English, but communicating was not very hard.” The Tamagawa students and teachers always extend such a special, warm welcome to Harker. In addition to the welcome assembly and many other special touches throughout the visit, each homeroom class at Tamagawa had made a welcome poster with our students’ names on it. Our students were assigned to certain homerooms during their visit, and on the last day each

homeroom class had a special farewell for “their” Harker students. Nan Nielsen - all Tamagawa photos

The trip itinerary included wonderful assemblies and classroom time at the Tamagawa School with all the students and teachers. As part of the environmental studies in Gr. 6 at Harker, students prepare presentations on a variety of environmental topics. Based on

the quality of the content, layout and creativity, several students were selected to present their projects to the Tamagawa students during the visit, and they did an outstanding job. Those students and their topics were: Shelby Golan, Boto Dolphin; Joshua Pinzas, Monarch Butter fly; Ben Englert, Electric Car and Natalie So, Greenhouse Effect. In addition to the valuable “bonding” time spent in the host family homes and on the

Tamagawa campus, students had a busy sightseeing schedule that took them to Kyoto, Hakone and Hiroshima, and included a ride on a bullet train (and hamburgers for lunch!) “We hiked in the rain and sailed a pirate ship on a volcanic lake,” said admissions director and Harker chaperone Nan Nielsen. “We saw the beautiful Golden Pavilion temple and a tree growing in the shape of a ship that is hundreds of years old. We delivered the paper cranes made by all the 6th graders to the memorial in Hiroshima. We stood quietly there at the memorial and found much to think about. We built friendships without needing words.” “I loved everything about the Tamagawa trip. It was great, and it was all a life experience,” added Evan. An informational meeting was recently held for current 5th grade parents and students interested in learning about participating in the Harker Tamagawa exchange program for next year!

■ Tara McFarland’s class celebrated Mother’s Day in May with a fun “Mommies and Muffins” event. Besides the obvious muffins and other treats, students read poems that they had written themselves and presented their moms with potted flowers. “There were tears, laughs and many memories made,” said Ms. McFarland. ■ The Harker Environmental Committee chose to sponsor awareness about Earth Day this year. In an effor t to help everyone learn more about our environment, 5th grade teacher Jason Oncay created a website to display the work of students who contribute to the cause. Children were asked to send in contributions such as projects, artwork and poetry to display on the web. The main page of the Harker Environmental Projects website has links to all sorts of environmental topics from “Interesting Environmental Facts” to “Celebrating Wildflowers Color Book Page.” There is a link for each grade level to view projects that were submitted. The projects range from recycling drawings of children putting paper and cans into the proper recycling bins to poems, collages, and even a short video of a 1st grader, Nikka Van den Dries, reading a poem about the environment. A few of the 3rd grade computer classes made this a class project so there are lots of drawings to view at the 3rd grade link. http://faculty.harker.org/ls/jasono/ htm/earthday/ earthdayframeset.htm ■ Kindergarten teacher Nancy Curran recently held a “thank you”

Time will tell whether this experience will inspire Katherine towards a career in education! ■ The 6th graders were recently treated to a special “Step Up Day,” where they were bused to the Saratoga campus to acquaint them with the campus and to learn about the middle school life that they will begin next year. The students gathered in Shah Hall, and Ms. Gargano, current US math teacher and the incoming middle school head, gave an explanation of the day’s schedule, and Howard and Diana Nichols welcomed the class to the Saratoga campus. Then specialty subject teachers gave brief descriptions of some of the optional classes and clubs offered on the Saratoga campus, such as acting, Harmon-

AROUND ics, Pep Band, String Ensemble and the Bug Club. Various middle school students spoke to the incoming 7th graders about other student-run activities and clubs. Lauren Harries described the student-run newspaper, “The Eagle Eye,” and Casey Blair and Amira Valliani talked about the Student Council, explained about the leadership projects and encouraged students to run for homeroom office. Two Gr. 8 mentors led each visiting Gr. 6 homeroom on a tour of the campus and through an abbreviated class schedule. Then the students joined the middle school students for lunch. When asked about their impressions of the day, the Gr. 6 students said... “I like having older people around; they are more mature than all the little kids at Bucknall. I like the teachers; they have rules that are set for older kids.” —Alex Boberg “Mrs. Cisar is really nice and I look forward to having her next year!” —Gar-Yun Ho “I feel very comfortable here and everyone has been so nice.” — Aarathi Minisandram “There is so much more to choose from and the food is really good.” —Nitasha Ranganath “The teachers seem so nice...and Mr. Z gives out Cokes!” —Rachael Peterson Thanks to the following Gr. 8 mentors for hosting our incoming middle school students for this special day: Mina Lee, Ellen Harris, Gareth Scheerder, Tanuj Thapliyal, Miles Bredenoord, Rohini Venkatraman, Asavari Gupte, Elizabeth Moul, Aaron Nemetz, Keir Myers, Mike Lee, Meghana Dhar, Mohammed Ahmed and Ira Patnaik.

bucknall Eureka! Another Successful Gr. 4 Coloma Trip!

All fourth graders and 16 chaperones attended the 9th Annual Coloma Trip in May, spending three days and two nights at the Coloma Outdoor Discovery School by Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park at Sutter’s Mill. “This educational enrichment program offers the per fect complement to our Gr.4 social studies curriculum, with a fascinating emphasis on gold rush history,” said Christy Vail, elementary division head. Vail added that this learning experience integrates environment, ecology and living history curricula, providing a particular emphasis on the importance of making choices that will have a positive impact on our increasingly fragile environment.

of 15 children each with two Harker chaperones and a Coloma naturalist. Each day included teambuilding and cooperative activities, such as bartering for supplies needed to make cornbread, making cornbread over an open fire and building a shelter from materials found in the natural surroundings. There was also an all-day nature hike, some square dancing and an evening of sitting by the fireside and listening to a wise old native American. Thanks to the following faculty and staff for chaperoning this wonder ful annual trip: Sarah Leonard, Keith Hirota, Jon Shiller, Giresh Ghooray, Jim McGovern, Chris Yamashita, Joe Chung, Eric Hoffman, Lisa Hackwood, Lisa Hirata, Sabrina Criscione, Heather Perrotta, Mike Bourquin, Kathy Ferretti, Vanessa Bullman and Martha Acosta.

■ An opinion piece by Gr. 8 student Meghana Dhar was recently published in the Mercury News Opinion section (Sat., April 27, page 11B) as part of a class assignment in Cyrus Merrill’s World History class. According to Merrill, Meghana’s ar ticle was part of an assignment to write to the justice depar tment or send a letter to the editor or to their elected official regarding their opinion in the Microsoft antitrust case. The students were comparing current issues with those during the Gilded Age. ■ P.E. and health teacher Becky Cisar reported that the 7th graders did a particularly great job creating tobacco and alcohol “spoof” ads in

their drug education class this past semester. Here’s one example by student Annelise Han, Gr. 7. ■ The Gr. 8 Advanced Spanish classes went on their annual field trip to Picasso’s Restaurant in San Jose in April and had a chance to

sample traditional Spanish dishes, such as a variety of paellas and tapas. “The group filled the tiny restaurant and did a wonderful job practicing their Spanish with the staff,” said teacher Julie Pinzas. ■ The Gr. 8 Intermediate and Advanced Japanese Honors classes went to Tomi-Sushi restaurant for a field trip recently. Teacher Masako Onakado explained that since the students learned how to order food in Japanese in class, they were able to practice ordering Japanese food. “For a few students like Neel Joshi and Ira Patnaik, it was the first experience to go to a Japanese restaurant, so they struggled so much with chopsticks—Neel ended up eating Tempura with his hands!,” laughed Onakado. She added that they all enjoyed the food and the experience! ■ Many thanks to the following Gr. 7 students who served as “garland bearers” at the inaugural graduation ceremony at Mountain Winer y in May. You did a wonderful job, and we appreciate the extra time this took out of your busy schedules. Each of these students received a certificate entitling them to a free dress and lunch in the Edge next Sept. in appreciation for their help. Thanks also to MS teachers Sylvia Harp and Cindy Kerr who helped organize this wonder ful group of students: Kimberly Wong, Jessie Li, Mansi

■ The advanced French classes (apprx. 24 students) went to Crêpe Daniel Restaurant in Saratoga in May for French food, culture, and fun. Carol Parris, MS French teacher, reported that the students were able to watch their meals being prepared on traditional crêpe irons brought over from France and “get up close and

personal with the food units studied in class.” Those with adventurous spirits ordered a variety of French delicacies including French onion soup, escargot and pâté. Bon Appétit!

Museum and Old Sacramento, and visited the Moaning Caverns and Columbia State Park. The students were taken to see the musical dance production “Stomp” in Berkeley. They also toured the Hershey Chocolate factory in Oakdale and the Jelly Belly factory in Vacaville. Many of the students cited the Jelly Belly factor y stop as one of their favorite stops, but here are some other comments from the trip: • Shaina Patel: “‘Stomp’ was cool,

and the dry ice and liquid nitrogen class was fun!” •Priyanka Bearelly: “The Moaning Caverns were so dark and deep and at one point they turned the lights off and you could not see anything. It was really freaky. There were cool rocks at Columbia State Park.”

Sacramento was cool how they combined the modern world with the old world. All the shops looked old, but you could buy new stuff in them. I liked the gold mining stuff at the Columbia State Park.”

•Siddharth Chandrasekhar: “I liked how they explained things in the classes at Berkeley.”

AROUND Future Problem Solvers Take Third State Championship! Harker once again attended the annual Future Problem Solving state championships held recently in Davis, CA and for the 3rd straight year Harker finished first in the presentation portion of the competition! Harker teacher and team advisor Cyrus Merrill said that for five of the 12 students who qualified for the state finals (Amira Valliani, Sean Turner, Sameer Chopra, Siobhan Stevenson and Alexandra Nicholaeff) this was their second state championship win! In the qualifying round Harker teams finished first and second in their qualifying group at the elementary level with one team advancing to state finals. The Gr. 6 team members competing in the qualifying round were Kenric Tam, Raven Reddy, Joey Shapiro, Charlie Fang, Niyanth Anand, Randy Chang, Chiraag Deora, Shelby Golan, Palash Agarwal, Rachel Fong and Colin Daw. The Gr. 6 team members making it to the state finals were Michael Kang, Whitney Huang, Chris Tai and Melissa Chen. For the first time ever, Harker fielded a middle school team as well. Our middle school teams finished second and third in their qualifying group with one team advancing to the state championship. The MS team members who competed in the qualifying round and narrowly missed (by one point) advancing to the state level were Natasha Sarin, Alexandra Nicholaeff, Siobhan Stevensen and Jessica Lee (all Gr. 7). Harker also had four individuals selected to attend the state competition based on their effor ts in the first two rounds. These competitors had to complete all of the steps on their own. These individual competitors were top participants of teams who just missed advancing to the state level: Shelby Golan and Palash Agarwal (Gr. 6); Siobhan Stevenson and Alexandra Nicholaeff (Gr. 7). Congratulations to all of you for your impressive performances! Note: See pgs. 9, 13, & 16 for more middle school news.

Adi Goradia, presented their findings on the “state of tolerance and diversity in South Bay high schools,” along with 22 students from 14 other local area high schools. These students were selected to be part of Congressman Mike Honda’s newly formed Student Advisory Committee (SAC) in early October. Their recent presentation to Congressman Honda and other elected officials in the Santa Clara City Council chambers was the culmination of a year’s worth of work for the students. The objective of the group was to work specifically on issues of tolerance and diversity and to investigate the effect that the attacks of September 11th have had on tolerance, diversity, and social interaction among the student body of the South Bay and around the world. They interviewed education authorities, combed libraries and the Internet and authored and tabulated their own survey of over 500 students in the 15th district. “While we would be naive to think that cultural differences among our student body are not an issue, I did learn that it is not of primary importance to the students,” commented Williamson, advisor for the Harker group. “The learning that goes on at Harker is paramount and the main focus of the students. While it is important to recognize and celebrate our diversity, the students made it clear to me that it is the variation of ideas and beliefs that makes us strong, both individually and collectively, and adds to, not takes

The keynote address was given by inventor Dean Kamen (inventor of many devices including the Segway). The group was able to meet with Mr. Kamen (as he scooted around on his Segway scooter), as well as other prominent members of Silicon Valley’s tech community. Pictures from the event can be viewed at http:// users.harker.org/hs/randalh/ techchallenge/fairmont.html. The Harker School Robotics Club also placed 4th overall during the preliminary seed rounds in the NASA BotBall competition in April in a field of 30 teams. “During the head to head competition, Harker made it through 4 rounds before being knocked off -- due to battery failure! -- earning a 4-way tie for 9th place,” said Rand Harrington, US teacher and club advisor. According to Harrington, Harker was one of the few rookie teams this year and was commended by many judges for their efforts. Congratulations to members of the team: Alan Malek, Alex Segal, Albert Wu, Pia Pal, Greg Perkins and Adrik Mcllroy. The Robotics Club plans to continue competing in local events such as the Tech Challenge and BotBall next year, but they also hope to create a team to compete in the prestigious Robotics FIRST competition which challenges teams of students and their mentors to design and build a robot in a six-week time frame, using a standard “kit of parts.” “The goal isn’t simply to build a robot,” said Harrington. “The robot is a vehicle

for learning much more. The real goal is building a collaborative team, a supportive community and solid strategy for problem solving during the competition.” There will be an informational meeting (date not set at press time) for all interested students and their parents this summer, and if you are interested in being a part of this exciting adventure log into http://randh.harker.org/robotics/ new.htm and provide Harrington with information about how you would like to be involved. You'll be contacted with details about the meeting. ■ Student Elections Elections were recently held for class officers and student body officers for next year. 1st Annual Harker Regatta The Junior Class traveled to the Santa Cruz Harbor and the Pacific Yachting & Sailing Club to participate in the first annual Race for the Harker Junior Cup. Teams of juniors with Harker chaperones sailed through a day of hands-on instruction, fascinating classroom sailing theory and navigational skills instruction, followed by an actual race with US coastguard licensed captains on each boat, with students as crew. Due to the challenging sailing conditions (high winds!) it was difficult to be consistent with the scoring of the Regatta portion of the event. After much consultation, it was

agreed by Mr. Williamson, along with the captains and staff at Pacific Yachting & Sailing Club, that the entire junior class be the recipient of the first-ever Harker Cup to honor the sportsmanship and teamwork of this class. Congratulations to the Class of 2003 —nice work, both on land and at sea!

The Class of 2002’s president won the flag search (pictured); however, the Class of 2003 (juniors) won the rally and was named “Most Spirited Class” for the second consecutive year. “A great job by all classes this year,” said Daren. “The scores were close enough by the end of this year that this final rally determined the winner.” This wild and raucous event ended with a bittersweet announcement, amid cheers of support and excitement, of the colleges that our graduating seniors had chosen to attend, led by college counselors Sandy Padgett and Nicole Burrell. ■ Round 5 of the Harker intramural chess tournament took place in May, and first place went to US student Lev Pisarsky who won all 5 rounds and is rated 1900th in the United States Chess Federation. Second place went to US student Jeff Shih. “The MS and US students played strong and with enthusiasm,” reported tournament organizer Raji Swaminathan, who added that the following MS students also perfomed very well: Nicholas Tan, Akaash Bhalla, Lucas Motro, Phil Perkins and Alex Nikolaeff. “Alex was the only girl in the entire tournament and she played so well that I hope she is an inspiration to other girls to start playing chess,” said Swaminathan.

■ The theme of the Final Rally in the upper school was “Reality TV,” and the results were hilarious! Chris Daren, activities coordinator and yearbook advisor who organized the event, explained that each class did a skit based a a TV show. The freshmen choose “Bug Juice,” sophs chose “Fear," juniors chose "Fear Factor,” and the seniors chose “The Osbournes.” They then competed in three different events: milking a cardboard cow (don't ask!), licking their class number out of frosting (don't ask!) and swimming in a pool of pasta (Right. A special recognition to the many students who submitted essays this year -- your time and effor t in seeking this student body position are commendable. ■ JETS Team First in the Nation Congratulations to our JV JETS (Junior Engineering Technology) team for garnering the 1st place ranking in our division nationwide! As reported in last month’s edition, our JV and Varsity JETS teams each placed 1st in state rankings, and due to this success, our scores were sent to the national office pending national rankings. This was the first year we had a varsity team, and we are also extremely proud of their national ranking of 6th place, particularly given the more challenging field of competitors at this level. Jennifer Gargano, US math teacher and JETS advisor, said that the JV team will receive a trophy and the varsity team will receive a plaque. According to Gargano, “This has been our best year ever!!” Congratulations to the students and to Ms. Gargano for your wonderful performances! You can visit the JETS ranking web site (we're Division 4) at http:// www.jets.org/teams.htm and you can also get more details on Ms. Gargano's web page at http:// users.harker.org/hs/JenniferG/ syllab/mathweb/ jets_annoucements.htm ■ US teacher Hem Navangul recently chaperoned a team of four Harker students to the 52nd Annual California State Leadership Conference of the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) in Irvine, CA. Nearly 1,300 students from over 50 high schools from the South, North, Gold Coast, Bay and Central California sections attended the event, including Homestead, Cupertino and Lynbrook. During the four-day event, students attended workshops, took tests in various business subjects, heard speeches from successful business leaders and competed for awards in assorted fields such as Network Design, Accounting, Banking and Financial Systems, Marketing, Business Plan, Business Law,

Computer Concepts, Desktop Publishing, Impromptu Speaking and Public Speaking. According to Navangul, though Harker was the “new kid on the block” as a first time participant, we did very well. Lekha Challa, Harker’s FBLA club president, secured a third place in the Impromptu Speaking category and was also elected vice president for the Bay Section. The team of Wendy Tsai and Sanby Lee secured a fifth place in the field of Business Plan. Nice work to all! ■ Twenty-six students from Key Club and from the Harker US community participated in the Human Race 5k Walk on May 11th, raising $1,100 for the Sunkara Eye Foundation, a local non-profit agency that provides supplies, medicine and funds to eye clinics in India and surrounding countries. Students were able to visit with volunteers from the Sunkara eye foundation the morning of the run to learn more about how the funds are used. Congratulations to all for participating in this worthwhile event! ■ The students and faculty recently heard a presentation by Professor Kenneth Louden of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of San Jose State University. Professor Louden is a noted speaker and the author of several books, including the Programming Languages textbook used in last semester's Advanced Topics in Computer Science course. His talk was on the “3Templates and Generics: A Case Study in Programming Language OECrossPollination12.” Many thanks to Professor Louden for finding time in his busy schedule to share his insights with our school community. ■ Rob Morrill, Brigid Flanagan, Beverley Manning and Diana Moss have all attended workshops at the Center for Digital Storytelling this year to learn how to use this exciting new technology in the classroom. Grade 12 student Haiping Chen’s project in Mr. Morrill's Asian Literature class this past spring was a particularly good example, according to BIll Barnes, Director of Technology for Harker. “There was an excellent script and a well defined voice apparent in the writing,” said Barnes. Here is a link to Haiping's excellent project:

FRENCH

■ Harker students from French Levels 2, 3, and AP Literature participated in the National French Contest this past March, an annual test for students of French at all levels nationwide. US French teachers Clémence Richard and Françoise Thompson recently reported the results, explaining that this one-hour test evaluates students in listening, aural comprehension, grammar, reading comprehension and culture. Students are tested against other students of the same level, and over 92,000 students nationwide competed this year. Fourteen Harker students received regional recognition, by ranking between 1 and 10 in Northern California and were awarded certificates

recently at a special awards ceremony at Stanford University. In addition, ten Harker students were among the top eleven students nationwide in their respective levels.

Harker freshman Rachel Newman was ranked #2 nationally, in a field of 17,335 students at the French 2 level.

Math Competition Highlights Seventeen students (three from the middle School) participated in the DOE-LLNL Math Challenge held in April at Lawrence Livemore National Laboratory (LLNL) in Livermore. Harker Team B with members Jerry Chi (Gr. 12),Yi Sun (Gr. 8) and Ozan Demirlioglu (Gr. 10) placed third overall. Congratulations to Yi Sun, an 8th grader in the high school math competitions group who qualifed to participate in the USA Math Olympiad (USAMO) at the Massachussetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Yi qualified after achieving very high scores in a series of contests conducted by American Math Competitions (AMC) -- the AMC10, AMC12, and the AIME. USAMO contestants are the top 250 high school students in the nation. As an 8th grader, beating top high school students in a math competition is indeed a big achievement. Harker students participated in the CSU-Fresno Math Field Day held in April and received the first place trophy in the Small School category. Participating schools were categorized based on the school population, and since The Harker School has less than 1,000 students, we were classified as “Small School.” However, most of our students

who participated in the contest received the highest awards. In the Leap Frog Relay, Harker had 6 contestants and they ALL received awards. The team of Yi Sun (Gr. 8) and Jerry Hong (Gr. 9) placed first; the team of Ravi Mishra (Gr. 10) and Elise Nguyen (Gr. 10) placed 3rd and the team of Adi Jain (Gr. 10) and Andrew Zhang (Gr. 11) placed 5th. In the Mad Hatter B Category (a contest meant for freshmen and sophomores), Harker fielded 3 contestants: Ozan Demirliolgu (Gr. 10) got first while Ashray Urs (Gr. 10) got the 2nd place award and Karthik Kailash (Gr. 10) received the 5th place award. The last contest for this school year was the American Regions Math League (ARML) held May 31June 1 at San Jose State University. The following students will be participating on the San Francisco Bay Area Team: Ozan Demirlioglu, Charles Hung, Felix Lee, and Yi Sun. For detailed and updated information on our math competitions, visit Fisico’s newly created contest web site at http:/ /users.harker.org/hs/MisaelF/ mathcontests.htm —Reported by US math teacher Misael-Jose Fisico

The first annual promotion ceremony for the 6th grade took place on Wed., June 5th in the Bucknall gym. Families attended this special event, which included Qtr. 4 awards, as well as special presentations to the students — and from the students — to mark the symbolic occasion of their “promotion” from the Bucknall campus to the Saratoga campus next year. “This touching event was followed by lots of hugs and yearbook signing,” commented Christy Vail, elementary division head. “We’ll miss our 6th graders, but we’re excited for them and know we will still see them over the coming years.”

Harker proudly presented 8th grade diplomas to 152 students on Thurs., June 6th in a ceremony held in the Bucknall gym. Over 300 proud parents, relatives and friends listened to speeches given by class president, Amira Valliani; valedictorian, Yi Sun; and head of school, Mrs. Nichols. Students earning special recognition were Young Jo Kim, Carley Award; Samantha Fang, salutatorian; Casey Near and Amira Valliani, general excellence. The following students earned Service Awards for outstanding participation and leadership in the Harker community for three years or more: Casey Blair, Asavari Gupte, Lauren Gutstein, Michael Hammersley, Sharon Her, Amy Huang, Jaya Iyer, Michael Lee, Ira Patnaik and Rohini Venkatraman.

Kindergarten Tree Planting Ceremony On May 30th the tree planting ceremony took place, an annual Kindergarten tradition since 1996. The entire kindergarten class plants a tree on the Bucknall campus in a special ceremony attended by all the kindergarten children and the teachers. “As they grow and move through their years at Harker, it’s something they can look back on with fond memories, something they can call their own that signifies their beginnings here as a kindergartener,” explained Sarah Leonard, primary division head.

EVENT

news

Ooh La La! Harker's 2002 Picnic in Paris Was Truly La Fete Fantastique! On Sun., April 28th, Harker families, alumni and friends passed through the blue, white and red balloon archways and strolled down topiary lined Rue de Harker on our Saratoga Avenue campus. Greeted by a delightful French mime on stilts, picnic patrons were eager to enjoy the colorful array of French themed activities. From Les Crepes d'Antoine on the Left Bank, to student artists recreating treasures of the Louvre on the Rue de Quad, to the elegant auction on the Champs Elysees, we all were transported through “Paris” literally…by Le Choo Choo train! Highlights of the day included the fabulous Follies d'Harker Student Performance and the spectacular Santa Clara Aquamaids' Moulin Rouge Review. Students especially enjoyed the French Waiter Relays du Jour, the daring Quasi's Climb, the spirited Ponies of Provence, and the ever popular Wheels of Fortune. Game prize winners were treated to special assistance at the newly created Concierge booth where winnings were stored until the end of the day. Our Grand Finale Drawing concluded the day in style. Harker parent Terry Woods won the $10,000 first prize (sold by Nicole Woods, G5); Luke Olsen will enjoy the Paris Las Vegas weekend (sold by Madeline Lucan, G4); Maria Medrano is the proud owner of the Sony Digital Camcorder (sold by top ticket seller Raven Reddy, G6); The Gardanier Family won the Mountain Bike (sold by Lauren Gardinier, G3); and Ram Madduluri brought home the Nintendo Game Cube (sold by Rahul Madduluri, G2). Congratulations one and all! We would like to extend special thanks to our Premier Picnic Committee, to our generous sponsors and donors, and to our hundreds of parent, student and staff volunteers. Merci beaucoup for making Picnic in Paris such a grand success! —Lynette Stapleton, picnic coordinator and board member

Special Gifts From Sixth and Eighth Graders

■ The graduating 8th graders have donated a beautiful bench that will be placed near Shah Hall on the Saratoga campus as a gift to the teachers and future students. Students are shown here at their graduation rehearsal presenting the plaque to Mrs. Nichols. The bench, which arrived one week later, is being installed this summer.

■ This year was the first year there was a 6th grade on the Bucknall campus. In honor of this, the 6th grade students and families planted a Sycamore tree in the primary lunch area as part of their promotion festivities. The plaque, which will be mounted near the tree, reads: “A gift to The Harker School from the first 6th grade class, Bucknall 2002.” Many thanks to the 6th and 8th grade students and families for these special tributes. We will enjoy these lasting gifts together for years to come!

PERFORMING

arts

The Harker Harmonics staged a fabulous production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” in May, presenting two evening performances for families and two daytime per formances for students. These talented middle school students began rehearsals in Februar y, and their hard work was evident in the quality of the show. The music, the lights, the sets and the student per formances were truly magical. Many thanks to the 39 per formers and 8 crew members, as well as director Brian O’Sullivan, music director Maureen Driggs and the dozens of other faculty, friends, staff and parents who brought this wonderful story to life for all to enjoy.

Chris Daren

We announced next year’s Harmonics members in last month’s newsletter. We look for ward to more great things from this wonderful middle school performance group in the years to come!

You could just feel the energy and enthusiasm of the dancers at the first annual Bucknall Dance Concert held May 31st and June 1st in the Bucknall gym. Over 150 dancers tapped, swirled, bopped and rocked to music selected and introduced by Harker teachers and staff in prerecorded introductions to each number. Kudos also to the crews and ushers, and to all the students who submitted artwork for use in the programs. The personal touch, the spirited performances and the clear dedication of the students, teachers and staff involved truly made the performance a moving experience! Many, many thanks to the following Harker staff: Gail Palmer, director; Wendy Huber, asst. director; Tara Taylor, after-school dance instructor; Danny Higgins Dunn, technical director and stage manager; Natti Pierce-Thompson, lighting designer; Stephen Philley, sound board operator and Brian Larsen, technical consultant.

arts Harker Wins American Musical Theatre’s Best High School Musical Award! The US Conservator y participated this year in American Musical Theatre’s (AMT) High School Honors program, and our cast and crew of “Oklahoma!” were awarded Best Musical of 2002 at AMT’s 8th annual awards ceremony. In addition, out of 36 male performers, Rick Hayashi was selected as one of only six finalists. Over 2,500 participants from the 28 other Bay Area high schools competing attended the event, which was held at AMT's theatre in downtown San Jose.

Judging for this event was comprised of eight professional musical theatre judges visiting each participating school to observe and evaluate all aspects of their productions. The San Francisco Chronicle and several other papers mentioned our win in their publications. Congratulations, all!

Spring Concert

Students in Laura Lang-Ree’s Student Directed Showcase class worked tirelessly throughout the semester learning the craft of directing. Students chose their own one-act drama or comedy, held auditions and cast their show from over 40 students who auditioned, designed their own show logo, their costumes, props, lighting, tickets and programs, created and maintained a show budget and produced their shows in May. The productions were a hit, drawing nearly 200 audience members over their two night run. The 2001-02 student directors were junior Gabby DeMers and seniors Teja Patil, Samana Kahn, Sean McKenzie, Ashley Alston, Irene Altman and Carmen Antoun. “These dedicated and creative directors made this class the most rewarding of my career at Harker,” said Lang-Ree.

The annual spring concert was once again a fabulous evening, showcasing the talents of our jazz band, string ensemble, orchestra (and guests!) and middle school choir. Many thanks to Bob Scannell and Len Allen for all their work, and to all of our wonderfully talented students.

Bucknall May Art Show The 20th annual Gr. K-6 Bucknall May Art Show was held May 7-23rd with 970 pieces on display. The fabulous student work included paintings, drawings, collages, prints, constructions, fiber arts and ceramics. Four hundred of the pieces, in 50 different categories, were from the After-School Art program, where students have the opportunity to create before school, during recess and lunch, and after school. We commend our students for the high caliber artwork they produced this year, and we thank them for sharing their creative work with us. Huge kudos also go to our wonderful Bucknall art teachers, Eric Hoffman, Sang Bae and Margaret Peterson.

Middle School Art Show The annual Middle School Art Show was held May 15-24, with approximately 100 pieces created by our Gr. 7 and 8 students. For the first time ever, the show was mounted in Shah Hall, which was a wonderful venue to showcase the students’ work. A variety of mediums were used to represent this year’s themes of “Patterns” and “Portraits,” including acr ylic paint, paper collages, markers, watercolors, clay and wire.

Katy Yu

A special reception was held to open the event, and students, faculty and parents were invited. “This year's show was a great display of all the hard work that the students have done this year,” said MS art teacher Margaret McGovern. “We are hoping to make it an even bigger event next year.” Congratulations to all the students, and to all the art teachers involved in this year’s show, Margaret McGovern, Alice Schwartz and Don Maxwell, for sharing your incredible talents with us!

Bucknall & MS We had one of our best soccer seasons ever for both our boys’ and girls’ MS teams. Coached by Coach Walid and Coach Karriem, our girls “A” team went 4-1 and was led by Liz Moul (Gr. 8) and Megan Kehriotis (Gr. 7). Our boys “A” team, coached by Coach Manny and Coach Airto, went 3-2 and was led by Jay Sohn and Jonny Jenq (both Gr. 8).

The Gr. 6 girls scrimmaged the Gr. 7 girls team twice with the first game ending in a 12-12 tie and the second game going down to the very end. The 7th graders won 106. Great participation from the 4th6th grade teams! There was softball for the 7/8 girls, coached by Coach Airto and Coach Manny. They played a few games, but the season was mostly for practice and intramural games. At Bucknall, our athletes didn’t have any games over the spring season, but they practiced and improved, with the girls playing softball and flag football (as noted above) and the boys playing baseball and volleyball. All coaches commented on the improvement and enjoyment the students had in learning new skills and participating. Everyone, coaches and players, did an outstanding job this spring. In fact, the boys 4th grade led all participants (4th-8th grade) in the number of students playing 4 or more sports with 24 students!! At this year’s annual Athletic Awards ceremony, Lung-Hao Yu and Bret Hampton were named male Athletes of the Year and Elizabeth Moul was named female Athlete of the Year. Congratulations to all! —By Theresa Smith, Gr. 4-8 athletic director and Mary Kay Olks, P.E. teacher

Boarding Program Closes Leaving Great History and Fond Memories Behind outside of the classroom, and many of the teachers developed special bonds with this “extended family.” “There will be a void when the dorms are not here star ting next school year,” said Terry Walsh, dorm manager this past final year. “Plus, teachers have become accustomed to coming over for irons, candles, batteries, light bulbs, dice, decks of cards and other various items that the dorm always seemed to have on hand,” she laughed.

2002-03 Boarding Students The Harker Boarding Program, which moved to the Saratoga campus in 1972, officially closed on Thurs., June 6, 2002, due to the continuing space needs of Harker’s expanding K-12 program. The decision almost two years ago to close the program at the end of this school year was extremely difficult for President Howard Nichols who was once a Harker boarding student himself. Caring, capable staff have taken care of the health, academics and social lives of approximately 1,377 school year boarding students over the years and approximately 2,100

Joe Rosenthal with boarders, circa 1990 summer boarding students. Study hall, meals, recreation, shopping, haircuts—all the daily needs—were met by the enthusiastic, dedicated dorm staff.

Oklahoma! BBQ Event a Huge Success

Welcome to our New Families!

“I have the greatest respect for the boarding students. Boarders become independent and self-reliant and remember the kindnesses shown to them and know how important kindness is in their lives. I am a much better person because of what I have seen these children do and the expressions of friendship and kindnesses shown to each other. Only if one lived it would one be able to know how meaningful and important the boarders have been to each other.” —Joe Rosenthal, exec. director of advancement & residential life

The boarding program has contributed greatly to the fascinating history of The Harker School. Warm memories of boarding students, staff and dorm activities will remain in the hearts of all those touched by this great program.

Over 250 new parents gathered recently for our annual K-8 New Parent Orientations. We warmly welcome all our new families to the Harker community and look forward to many wonder ful years together!

Mail or fax your form to the address below anytime during the summer months. “Harker does not require parents to make a commitment of service to the school, but please know we value whatever time you are able to give—no amount of time is ever deemed too little,” said Nancy Reiley, director of community relations. “There are many fun things in store for us all in the year to come, and we welcome all who enjoy participating in our volunteer efforts.” Mark your calendars now for the Volunteer Breakfast on Fri., Aug. 30 in the Bucknall gym. Stop in after morning drop-off and have breakfast with friends and veteran parent volunteers before you head off to work or home. Learn about the opportunities available and sign up on the spot! See you as early as 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 30! Warm Summer Welcome by Harker Ambassadors Many thanks to Harker volunteers who will be serving as “Ambassadors” over the summer to welcome and help new students and their families get ready for a new school year here at Harker. New families should expect a friendly phone call and word of welcome from a veteran Harker parent at some point over the summer. Ambassadors are a great source of information from a fellow parent’s perspective and in many cases can answer some of those “how to get started” questions that arise right before school begins in the fall. Used Book Exchange for MS and US Students On Sat., June 29 and Sat., Aug. 10 the Shah Hall field at Saratoga will be made available for a “fleamarket” style sale for the convenience of our parents. Middle and upper school parents and students who wish to sell their unneeded Harker textbooks can bring a blanket or table and set up on the field. Grads of '02 are welcome to come sell their textbooks, as well! A list of books that will be reused next year, and therefore eligible for re-sale, will be mailed to families prior to the first event. Suggested price for a gently used book is 60% of “new” purchase price. Transactions are strictly between Harker sellers and buyers, so bring checks or cash. (Sellers, remember to bring change and a cash box to use that day!). The Saratoga campus will open at 9 a.m. and will close promptly at noon on both Saturdays. Questions and volunteer forms can be directed to Nancy Reiley, Director of Community Relations, Harker School Advancement Office, 94 N. San Tomas Aquino Rd., Campbell, CA 95008. update

■ Harker theatre arts teacher Jeffrey Draper recently perfomed as Cliff in “Cabaret” at the Bus Barn Theater in Los Altos. ■ School nurses Debra Nott and Kathleen Harrington swam one mile, biked 25 miles and ran 6 miles in the Olympic Distance Triathalon fundraiser held in May to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. This “radiant in victory” shot was provided by Debra Nott. Great work, Debra & Kathleen, and they once again thank all those who pledged.

If you are interested in this parent-organized transportation, call her at 510.353.1221. Corrections: ■ Point of clarification: While the Spanish Declamation Contest repor ted in the May edition (pg. 10) was organized by US Spanish teachers Susanna Hartzell, Abel Olivas and Diana Moss (who also prepared the students for this event), all of our US Spanish teachers contributed to the success of our students, including Alicia Hart and Francoise Thompson. ■ In the MS Multicultural Club article, Emily Isaacs name was misspelled. Sorry, Emily!

JUNE 2002

Thanks, Ken!

We Kept the Spirit Alive With 1.25 and Your Participation 100

Since the 1997-98 Annual Giving Campaign, Ken Azebu has been an active and respected member of Harker’s Development Council. As a member, he has watched his children, Megan and Matthew, grow along with the annual giving campaign goal each year!

Eugene Louie

For the 1999-00 fiscal year, he was asked to take on the role of Development Council Chairman, and boy did he take it on! Under his leadership, with enthusiasm and ingenuity, the Council surpassed its goal by a landslide. With such a successful campaign under his belt, Ken agreed to stay on as the 2000-01 chairman and requested a co-chair. Shyamoli Banerjee rose to the challenge, and together they led the Council through another goalbreaking campaign. In 2002-03 we will have Ken again…this time as a member of the Development Council. He is passing on the torch to Shyamoli, who will lead the 2002-03 campaign along with Christine Davis. We want to thank Ken for his many years of ser vice and leadership on the Council, and we look for ward to having him continue on with us as a member, sharing his ideas and experience.

90 Thanks to the leadership 90 of Development Council Co-Chairs, Ken Azebu and 80 80 Shyamoli Banerjee, the 70 70 time and effor ts of Development Council 60 60 members and the commitments made by 50 50 Harker families and friends, we made our goal! 40 40 We are truly indebted to 30 each and every one of you 30 who participated in this 20 20 campaign and provided essential student program 10 10 support this past year. 00 As for the $25,000

Matching Challenge Grant contributed by a Harker family, we successfully matched 225% of this grant! Yes, you read that right…255%! The grant matched dollar-fordollar gifts received by returning families who did not participate in the 2000-01 Million for the Millennium Annual Giving Campaign. We are especially grateful to the Harker family that provided us with this oppor tunity and thankful to those families that participated in this challenge.

Your generosity, participation and commitment speak highly of your dedication to our students. On behalf of each and every Harker student, a heartfelt thank you for supporting this year’s campaign. Have a wonderful summer and see you next year. —-Kelly S. Parker, Development Director
