The Harker School Fashion Show

Friday, February 22, 2013 San Jose Convention Center

THANKS FOR MAKING THIS POSSIBLE Welcome to the 2013 Harker Fashion Show, Mission: Possible - Dare to Try! Today we celebrate the mission: possible that is Harker. You may think it’s daring to walk a runway or perform for a large crowd. But daring is not a new concept for us. Since Harker’s founding in 1893 as Manzanita Hall, the school has strived to give children the means and opportunities to stretch, to explore and yes, to dare. Our students continually astound us with their daring, inside and outside the classroom. We know it’s partly because Harker provides a safety net for them. Unlike those all-or-nothing stunts in the “Mission: Impossible” movies, our students know that here they can fail, get up and try again, and each time they accomplish one of those little missions, they dare to try more. And, as cliché as it sounds, we have complete faith that they will dare to make the world a better place, because we watch them make Harker a better place every day, and we see the incredible things our alumni do. They all dare to dream, and as you watch them in this fashion show, perhaps they’ll inspire you to dare to dream a little, yourself. Thank you for your support of Mission: Possible! Enjoy the show.

THANKS FOR MAKING THIS POSSIBLE Dear Guests, First, thank you for coming to the show. It’s our 10th annual fashion show and we hope you will enjoy it. As you can imagine, a ton of work goes into creating a show like this and it takes a special, dedicated team to pull it off. I have to say I have a newfound respect for the amount of work that goes into our annual fashion show. What truly amazed me was the amount of commitment everyone had to make this show special. So without further ado, the “Thank You’s.” Our parent volunteers: As you well know, these are the people who do the heavy lifting. I want to thank all the parent volunteers involved for the countless hours and passion towards making this a great show. There was always complete ownership and accountability regardless of their part in the group. I feel really lucky to have such an engaged team. Thanks, you guys rock!

WHO BENEFITS? Harker provides an outstanding education for college-bound students. First-rate academics, extensive extracurricular programs, top-notch teachers and advanced technological resources provide Harker students with a truly exceptional educational experience. Harker gives its students a solid foundation and the skills they need to realize their dreams on their journey through life. This educational foundation is achieved with the vital partnerships of loyal and dedicated families and generous community support. As an independent school, Harker is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that relies solely on funds from tuition, fees and charitable, tax-deductible contributions, like the one you’re making right now.

To the Harker staff: The fashion show is just one of the many events this group does throughout the year. From Teré to everyone involved, you guys are one hardworking, multitasking, fearless, committed, fun team. You guys truly made it a cool experience.

So who benefits from

MISSION: POSSIBLE ?

To our show director and her team: From the inception of an idea to the final product, where hundreds of kids are on stage, is a long process. There is no mystery why our performing arts department is so strong. Thanks to Laura and her team, we continue to push the bar up and demand the most of ourselves show after show.

Harker students, of course! Net proceeds from the show go to provide financial assistance to students who would otherwise be unable to benefit from a Harker education and fund the construction of the new gym and performing arts center.

Sponsors: In a world where there is no shortage of asking, thank you for your support … it does make a difference. Partners: Thank you for making all our models look so good. It’s not just the look but the confidence it creates when our models are on stage performing in front of hundreds of people. Thanks again. To the spouses and significant others of everyone involved: You can now officially have your partners back. Thank you for your patience and understanding, especially in the last weeks leading up to the show. I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it. ~ Pablo Picasso

The Harker School tradition spans more than 100 years and our roots run deep in this valley. In 1893, David Starr Jordan, then president of Stanford University, saw a need for a local preparatory school to raise the standards of academics and moral character at his university, so he encouraged biologist and Stanford graduate Frank Cramer to establish the Manzanita Hall for Boys. With similar goals in mind, Jordan inspired Catherine Harker to found the nearby Miss Harker’s School for Girls in 1902. Both schools provided a superior education and emphasized not only scholarship, but also ethics and leadership. In 1919 Manzanita Hall became the Palo Alto Military Academy (PAMA). Major Donald Nichols, who assumed leadership of PAMA in 1950, acquired Miss Harker’s School for Girls, transforming it into a coeducational day school. Major Nichols merged the two schools in 1972, and moved the school to the current Saratoga Avenue location, under the name Harker Academy. In 1973 Howard Nichols assumed leadership, and over the years phased out the military program and expanded the academic focus. Diana Nichols became the head of the school in 1983. Together, Howard and Diana Nichols led Harker’s rise to international prominence, along the way officially changing the school’s name to The Harker School. To fill the growing need for exceptional, non-religious high school education in the Bay Area, Harker expanded in 1998 to include grades 9-12. Fully enrolled since its inception, our upper school quickly earned a reputation for excellence, with students matriculating to prestigious universities throughout the world. Harker now proudly serves more than 1,800 students from kindergarten to grade 12 on three San Jose campuses. Howard and Diana Nichols retired as administrators in the spring of 2005 and Head of School Christopher Nikoloff, along with a dedicated and passionate community of faculty, students and families, continues Harker’s tradition of excellence today.
